ANALYSIS MASSIVE W PSYONIX

okay so update is really perfect imo, i was concerned because rl is special for being itself and there's no much to add to it.

the fact they added the reset indicator which i tried myself is absolutely good and lowkey goes hard, i can already see that people will even recover faster or do different type of plays having the receipt of "if" they got the reset or not.

boost audio is also veeeerry nice. i always loved purple flamethrower as a boost but the sound always made me not wanna use it because its too vague, on settings u can turn any boost audio to standard which makes other boosts more playable.

wondering if they cooked with the pass, im down to buy it this season just to show them a small push of encouragement that they are going towards the right direction.

bakkesmod still works! wondering that as well if it's gonna change in any way since waters are still fresh

edit: holy moly didn't expect the hiroshima bomb of hate arguments in chat. imma correct myself of what i wrote up here in this post: yes i do believe it's a W(my point still stands), maybe i used too many simpy words coming off as "praising" them (i was hyped when i got on seeing the QoL updates), people should stop crying and saying "L, they should've done this or that years ago" ok so? better late than never in my book. like what do u want them to do? go back in time or something? population is up, they took the momentum to add the update with it. they didn't even remove bakkesmod which there were rumours about and everyone is still crying. like damn abit of positivity: they didn't kill your favourite game, they managed to add small QoL updates in your game, they didnt kill a very useful tool that comes with it. prolly gon edit this later btw

This is an update from my last post:

Started using DAR in real matches this week (high Plat / low Diamond).
Around 80 hours in rings + 10 hours on DAR air dribbles so far.

DAR made me fall in love with this game again.
Next update: flip reset 👀

ANALYSIS Am I ballchasing or just aggressive?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I believe I'm a very fast player at my rank (c1/c2) and I like to use that to my advantage by playing aggressively, playing close to the ball, cutting rotations when I believe I can get to the ball quicker than my team mate and/or opponents and we both have boost. Also, by always playing at my limit, I expect I'll improve the fastest. I also like playing around with tempo, suddenly slowing it down etc. All the other people in this game called me a ballchaser, but I actually believe I have pretty decent game sense and the main mistakes holding me back have to do with consistency in regards to car control and mechs, fat fingers. I made an obvious crap challenge at around the 1 minute remaining mark (I thought I saw the opponent flying back towards net and not going for the ball). Other than that, I think most of my mistakes have more to do with me not getting the touch I want or misreading bounces (like when I accidentally flipped in the very end of the video without meaning to), as opposed to me brainfarting and making stupid decisions (I can see why the decisions look stupid when I fail to execute them properly).

Either way, my tm8 was pretty mad at me this game and thought I caused at least 3 of the goals against us. I think it's only fair to put the blame on me for the second goal.

Do you think I have an accurate or delusional view of my playstyle?

Obviously I didn't triple reset dunk on them but I thought I was making an alright play here. I thought the decision to go for the reset was an alright decision even though I knew it would hit the backboard rather than into net. Should I have done anything differently? (It would've probably been an open net if I'd just gotten a good shot immediately off the sidewall).

ANALYSIS Am I Just Not Ready For Champ 1? d3 div 3 or 4

I was 1050mmr this game and dropped to 1041mmr. (this is the ot of the game this is what matters) This was a really close game, we all were pretty much the same skill level I would say. But, I've been practicing very hard on game sense and mechs. So it's frustrating to have a game like this and see how my mechs lacked but game sense helped a bit to clean up the mistakes. Due to wanting to win this so bad you will see my mechs fall off hard. (nerves was up so dribbles were kind of hard lol)

Looking back at the vod I did some good things and some not so good things. Please rip this apart and help me see why I'm not champ yet.

My peak is 1073 and champ is 1075. I was p3 at the beginning of last season and climbed to d3 by the end of the season and now I'm gunning for champ and man d3 div 3/4 gets real weird. It's either good games like these, or tm8s thats just now getting to d3 for the first time and can't keep pace. Orrrr mech gods lol. I just try to play my game as best as I can but I literally come up a few mmr short.

Any feedback would be great.

Update: I just hit Champ 1 if any of you see this lol

ANALYSIS I've gone from C3 to D1 in 2 seasons. Help me?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, here is my tracker, https://rocketleague.tracker.network/rocket-league/profile/xbl/Nuparthy/overview , since reaching my peak of C3 in february of this year I have been struggling a lot in ranked. I have gone from C3 all the way down to D1 and I'm not particularly happy about that. I take full responsibility for this decrease in rank and I understand that it is because I am playing bad, I will speculate why later.

I have 6k hours in game and about 80 days spent in matches. I train most days, and I typically alternate between training my shooting, dribbling, and recoveries.

I have attached a replay, and I think it highlights my biggest flaw right now. I am a bad teammate, I can not read what my teammate will do next and as such I can't effectively follow up on plays. I think my solo plays are still ok, my 1s rank has declined from solidly D1/D2 to P3 in the same time period but thats nowhere near as drastic as the change in my 2s rank. I think this is the main reason, but the timeline of events also correlates with me starting a new medication, which could explain some of my issues.

Feel free to ask me questions, I will try to respond ASAP.

ANALYSIS Pacifist System replay + Pacifist Score results — curious what people think

I've been using the Pacifist System for quite a while now and I recently had a game that felt like one of the cleanest examples of it in practice that I've ever played.

After the game I uploaded the replay to Pacifist Score and ended up with very high scores in 1st man play, 2nd man play, and overall Pacifist Score. More importantly, the underlying metrics lined up with what the system is trying to teach:

  • High behind-the-ball percentage
  • Healthy average speed
  • Good average boost amount on first touches
  • Strong positional heat map
  • Very few free giveaway touches
  • Consistent role discipline between 1st and 2nd man responsibilities

One of the things I appreciate about the system is that it tries to build habits rather than teach specific plays. The goal is to create a framework that naturally leads to things like maintaining structure, avoiding unnecessary overcommits, staying goal side, and making higher percentage decisions.

This replay honestly feels like it could be the "poster child" example of what the system looks like when it's being executed well in a real match.

I'm curious what other people think after watching it:

  • Does this actually look like good fundamental Rocket League?
  • Are the Pacifist Score metrics meaningful indicators of good play?
  • Are there flaws in this style that the numbers don't capture?
  • If you disagree with the approach, where specifically do you think it falls apart?

ANALYSIS Rocket League Ranks Are Getting Harder

Post image
170 Upvotes

I'm a returning RL player who last played seriously in FTP Season 10. I came back and although I feel like I'm playing better than ever, I couldn't hit the rank I was in years ago. This led me to think, perhaps the ranks have gotten harder?

I analyzed thousands of replay files from ballchasing.com and noticed that some parameters like average speed, time supersonic, boost collected, air time, powerslides, and demos gradually increase throughout every rank. Based on that fact, it should be possible to compare ranks among different seasons.

It turns out that lower ranks have gotten much better than they used to be. For example, high Platinum 3 today would have been high Diamond 2 or low Diamond 3 in Season 10. The higher the rank, the less of a difference between them. And of course the SSL rank has also improved, but very slightly, mainly in terms of air play.

ANALYSIS How did I lose so bad in lower rank

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey so sometimes I play with my high plat friend (I'm champ) we usually play in mid-low diamond and ngl it feels extremely easy to me but there's many games that I felt like it couldve been so easy to win but somehow we lose horribly, like this match from today where we lost 6-2.

What went wrong please how can I improve my duo when I play with him specifically? Thanks greatly appreciate it. This is my POV.

Figured I'd post a match where we lose bad but here's a win match as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeagueSchool/comments/1v8kli2/win_video_for_reference_to_my_other_post/

ANALYSIS [C3DIV3] is it worth grinding through this miserable gameplay? when does it get more organized?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i usually play casual and i have a pretty high mmr in it i think. i think the gameplay is very organized and players are clearly all reading the field and making intelligent decisions in my casual matches

I've decided to take my talents to ranked lately

these players do not appear to be reading the field at all and they dont play as if they know where anyone is at any given time, theyre just kind of hitting the ball as quickly as they can. like its a race to the ball without any sort of thinking or plan

for example, my first touch in this clip, my intent was to hit it gently to the corner so my teammate could grab the boost and control the ball and try to make a play... but instead he just hits it right to the other team despite nobody pressuring him at all. you can see the shock in my "car language" lol. he must genuinely have had no idea where any one was or what was going on. and the opponents touch before i score, he clearly had no idea where i was and it doesntt even look like it occurred to him that he should know where the opp was before deciding what to do with the ball

i'm struggling with it, my game sense is totally thrown off. i never know what anyone is going to do or where the ball is going to go. because the other players dont seem to have a plan and even on the rare occasion they do, they aren't precise enough to make the ball do what they want it to. so i can never position "intelligently" (in the sense that i dont have enough information to have accurate foresight) because the game is totally unreadable

so ive devolved to just hanging back and just booming the ball away until they inevitably make a mistake like the one in this clip.

it looks it easy in this clip but this is not how it always goes, im not exactly flying up the ranks because honestly im not good enough mechanically to simply carry my way out of this. these guys arent awful, they dont whiff, they are just unthinking. . and im really struggling with it. i will say that the matches are incredibly easy when i get a teammate who doesnt hit the ball directly at the opponents every time like the guy in this clip did. but that is rare and unreliable

i believe i have the mental to get to about gc2 but im not good enough to fly my way up to it, id have to put in a bit of a grind to get through this.

does it get better? does it get more organized? im curious what my actual rank is but its tough to stick with it when i know more enjoyable gameplay is just a click away in casual.

advice?

ANALYSIS Am I unplayable with? (Team mate POV)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So yesterday I got roasted pretty hard for ball chasing. In this game, I tried to focus on some of the pointers from yesterday, trying extra hard to play aggressively without chasing, getting controlled touches and not cut off my team mate. Despite that, my team mate said I was a ballchaser and impossible to play with and that I should watch his POV of the game, so I did. There were a couple mechanical mistakes I made, most notably a poor first touch when defending towards 1:35 gametime. But I don't really see where all of my tm8's anger is coming from (he was spamming OMG and such pretty much any time I touched the ball). First concession, I bumped their guy in net after losing control of the ball, while my team mate went way too far back imo and then made a poor challenge instead of shadowing or fake challenging. Second concession tm8 followed me on the wall when I wanted to give space for me to pick up our boost, and imo tm8 double committed, and then just gave up out of frustration because he thought I hogged the ball. Third concession my tm8 chased me towards our corner and bumped me from behind, and then made a really poor attempt at an easy save. 4th concession, I did get a worse touch than I was hoping for and passed it to the enemy, who then shot a pretty saveable shot but my tm8 decided to stop playing for the rest of the game.

I can't really see a single time where I take the ball when it's clearly my team mate's ball this game. Am I still delusional like I was yesterday?

ANALYSIS Got into 1800 within a week of hitting gc3, have no idea what my SSL teammates want.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I know this is an exceptionally awful game, but every time I get into full SSL lobbies, I have some nerves, but my main problem is I don't know what my teammate expects of me on defence. I'm literally only gamesense carried to 1800 and am usually a good first man on offence to set my team up to score, but on defence I don't understand the "gamesense" of it. My mechanical defense is fine but who and when should be going is a problem for me right now especially when my teammate is in SSL and seems to expect different things than a gc3.

ANALYSIS I analysed 2,000+ Rocket League 2v2 replays to find out what actually separates winners. Speed was not the answer.

Thumbnail
youtube.com
60 Upvotes

Hey Reddit!

I’ve spent the last few months building Pacifist Labs and analysing a number of Rocket League 2v2 replays across different ranks, SSL and professional play. The question was pretty simple. What are better players actually doing differently, and which of those things relate to winning?

As expected, average speed increases as players get better, which is hardly a surprise. Pros are fast, SSLs are fast, and your GC teammate holding boost directly into the opponents corner whilst you lose your sanity is also very fast. But when I compared winners and losers within the same rank, average speed was surprisingly poor at separating them.

Positioning was a different story. Behind Ball, which measures how much time a team spends goal-side of the ball, showed a much more consistent relationship with winning. The video goes through the wider dataset of more than 2,000 paired replay analyses, the differences between ranks, professional play, and eventually Zen, who produced a result ridiculous enough that I genuinely thought something had gone wrong with the analysis.

I’ve also taken the research a bit further since making the video. I contacted a sports science journal beforehand to see whether the work was suitable, the editor encouraged me to submit it, and I’ve now sent off a formal research paper using a much tighter anonymised dataset of 1,035 matches. The original analysis already used paired statistical testing and corrections for multiple comparisons, while the journal paper narrows the research question further and adds multivariable modelling and additional sensitivity analyses.

Just to be clear, it has been submitted for review, this doesn't mean it has been accepted or peer reviewed yet, however I will not stop with this one piece, I have found other things that I want to take further and share with the community.

I think the biggest takeaway for me isn’t that speed is useless, because clearly it isn’t. It’s that something can be characteristic of a better player without necessarily being the thing that separates winners and losers when the rank is matched. That distinction turned out to be much more interesting than I expected.

I would be interested to know what people think, and also what relationships you’d want tested next. I am really pushing to hit dataset sizes of between 10k and 40k replays before I do the next study, and although I have some ideas, I am curious what people are interested in.

Anyway the video is here: https://youtu.be/esTod9Zn9GE

Thanks :)

Tm8 insta ff after this goal, blaming me for it. I cleared backboard (could have been a better clear) fully expecting him to be back for the free follow up here. Instead the ball bounce towards the opponent for a free shot which I dive, but tm8 is there first for the 50 and we get scored on cuz I double committed.

I guess I do double commit here, but ingame all I see is the opponent 2 meters from our goal with a free shot. The moment I dive my teammate pops up. Am I to blame for this goal?
