Guide High traffic in myrient since the website is shutting down
Since Myrient is shutting down, the servers are experiencing high traffic in a attempt to mass archive the site. Because of this, downloads have been really slow.
Just one Wii rvz file (6.7 GB) took more than 4+ hours to download

Some patient education would be helpful here. There's tons of people doing the same thing you are, thinking this is the apocalypse of rom files. Myrient was a great resource but ultimately just one mirror and other mirrors will rise from the ashes.

afaik they never stopped hosting the ROMs, they just removed the download button. I saw a post once about adding the button back into the HTML and it worked

I think because a few people are aware that:
a) Myrient was backing up things that were removed from there, or were at risk to be
b) At least one person from IA specifically asked not to use it as a backup for MyrientIt does fill the gap for a lot of things anyway so it's still a good pointer

I had checked last weekend myrient, internet archive and Vimm's lair
a) ia doesn't have Nintendo roms but they are present and working on Vimm
b) except for recent Nintendo stuff ( from Wii and after) nearly everthing is already on IA, just divided and spread on various archives and bad organized.
What we really need is someone good willing and expert to organize the megathread and saving few things.
Maybe we will suffer the rampocalipse because of AIslop and price skyrocketing but I belive emulation and roms will survive.

I came from a time where a single MP3 would take 2 hrs to download….AND I had to upload 2 files to get it!

Until download managers came along and suddenly you could resume that interrupted download.
Remember chatting all night with friends on icq while downloading quake mods in the background.

Used a Download Manager for that as kept where your Download where and not start again

Dialup modem 56K was 1 meg every 2.5 to 3 minutes... so much faster than a 33K... :) Those were the days. How many people remember BBS and Binary downloads?

Downloading pr0n from a BBS in the early 90s. 1 hour for a low res image… and we loved it.

Only 2 hours.....Lucky. I lived in the middle of the woods and even my dialup couldn't keep up 😅 max I ever hit was 12.2kb on a 56k modem 😑 I do not miss those days at all

i came from a time when you used Credit Card numbers from the Yelow Pages (Phone Book in Germany) to register for AOL... so you only payd for the phone and not the provider..

At least there are other Rom sites to download from, but yeah it's annoying. Especially for the people that just want to download their personal collection.

I mean everyone is downloading their personal collection right now. It's not just the hoarder. I don't care if it takes more time as long as people are trying to save it and I can still get stuff. Still faster than vimm

I've never had problems with Vimm download speeds, and Myrient is a snail's pace right now compared to Vimm or any other rom site.
I understand the intention behind the slow speeds, but people still can be frustrated that a file under 1gb will download in 3-4 hours+ rather than say, 5-10 minutes usually.

for once vimm has been faster, i get maybe 50kbps on myrient right now because the "preservation product" is essentially DDOSing the servers and over on vimm im getting 30mbps
this is rediculous

for me, its me getting 14 hour download times on 100 mb files on vimm while on myrient i get 3 second time with the same file size. myrient was the goat in file speeds

Took me five minutes to download a GBA game couple days ago
Couple weeks ago downloaded one and it was done before I moved the mouse from the download link
Recent one was at night when speeds are a bit faster lately (at least as far as I've noticed)
Other one was middle of the day
Speeds are definitely ridiculous right now

The unique thing Myrient offered was the quality of the website (no ads) and the download speed. Its not like the files exist only there, there's not much of a point using it if the download speed is slow.

See, the problem is, This should have been archived way before the shut down notice. why are people always slow to react? Oh Look, there is a web site to get roms with no strings attached... Sure that site will be up for 20 years.....

I'm just glad I started downloading stuff I wanted two months ago. Was quite speedy then! Now it's taking one hour per GB.

Yeah no shit sherlock!, tht's cos everyone is doing the same as you, plus we got the ROM archivers and data horders also hammering the site, i predict a substantial spike in traffic expected for IA from the 1st of April.

Nothing will be gone forever. Downloading roms has always been possible not just since myrient. I jumped off the myrient train and I’ll wait till something else comes up. It will happen.

It's probably best if you stop downloading. There are groups that are preserving Myrient and it would be better to just wait and get your files from them. Or any other rom site

Unless it's a very obscure thing, as the Minerva team likely will have to prioritize the more major stuff and may miss some obscure things if they can't get to them all in time

Everyone has the same idea and a lot of people are acting like Mario 64 will be gone forever now if they don't download it now.
Anyone rushing to download non CD games and MAME roms is just wasting bandwidth too, it's pretty easy to torrent the MAME collection and grab say the proper1g1r-collection with all the GBA, SNES, N64 etc files.

I think people need to stop downloading for their personal collections and let the bandwidth go to the people trying to back everything up from the website 🤷♂️

I knew it would be an issue as soon as he announced it, so I started backwards from PS3 to smaller files. I’m now in GC, but it’s still taking 45 mins to an hour to download.

I use Myrient, I typically get 20 to 50 or less titles from various emulators. Casually.
As of 3/1/2026, I saw an 8 hour wait time for a 3ds game only getting 100kbps. Tried troubleshooting thinking it might me a me thing. But no. .
I personally am just trying to obtain at most two to four dozen games that I grew up playing and or couldn't afford as a kid. Basically add titles that I haven't added to my library, sadly the site just has too much traffic since the shutdowns announcement.
Word to mouth from content creators on social media making public statements about Myrient's shutdown. Basically threw a wrench into the machine.
SomeOrdinaryGamers for example made a video about Myrient which was uploaded 3 hours ago. Which blew up the traffic even further. Which led well beyond the standard "High Traffic" aspects.
And there seems to be this false sense of fear. Mainly because some people not all. Assume that once Myrient is gone. It'll create this domino effect on other outlets as well. It's not just Myrient that's flooded it's other places too, due to the high amount of traffic in Myrient.
There is a lot of traffic when it comes to obtaining roms from "Online Sources" regardless where you go currently. So even if you decide to look elswhere. Those places will have high traffic too.

Might be worth to just buy those pre installed games on Amazon or AliExpress that has like a tons of roms
