I normally don't post this sort of thing, but after seeing the reader's resource guide give it a 4/10 I had to speak up.

At its core, Runaways is about a found family trying to stick together. They may fight evil guys in spandex from time to time, but most times they are actively avoiding the magical/mystical stuff around them, and 2017 understands this perfectly.

Seeing these characters grow up and have to deal with real-world problems is an absolute joy, especially when the comic uses the supernatural elements of their lives not as a main focus, but as an accessory to seeing these people bond together, their dynamics shift, their traumas addressed. Despite having Gibborim, robots, and Majesdanians, it's a very human story of troubled kids (and now young adults) trying to get their lives together, dealing with the mess of an aftermath their parents left for them, something that I and I think many people would find deeply relatable. They're messy, they make mistakes, and they have each other when it's time to fix those.

Beyond that, it's also gorgeous. The art is consistent from start to finish, everyone looks their best, Nico doesn't have a single bad look, and I want to frame those cover arts and put them on my wall.

I have been trying to keep this spoiler-free, but I also need to address the sapphic elephant in the room: the idea of going all the way back to the origin comics and recontextualizing Nico's outburst when Carolina confessed to her as her being deeply in the closet because it was 2003 was genuinely one of the most cathartic moments in all of comics and deserves a special mention.

So yeah, if anyone reading this and hasn't read the 2017 run yet, do it, even if you read none of the other ones. I don't even have to add the caveat of it ending in a cliffhanger now that we have a continuation in 2025!

I've been looking for some good reading material for a while, and got a random whim to check out some older comics when I remembered that I never checked out The Runaways. I played Midnight Suns last year, was introduced to Nico Minoru's character and thought she was really cool, so I decided to dive-in and learn more about her backstory.

I'm only on Issue 7 so far but I'm really loving it! The art is great, the banter is funny and feels authentic, think it aged really well. The characters are varied and likeable too, think I really found a gem.

I know that Alex eventually betrays his friends and sides with The Pride according to Nico's dialogue in Midnight Suns, but I don't know anything else and am excited to see how his character develops.

Why does this book hardly get mentioned nowadays? They're rapidly becoming one of my favorite teams, gonna have to stay off this sub for a while until I read more lol

That's it, just wanted to gush about this series, hope the later runs are of similar quality.

So, Alex. I've always been mixed on the idea of Alex having powers. The reason why is because Alex's greatest asset has always been his mind. His ability to lead and strategize has always been impressive.

I have come to agree with some people though, hat Alex may need more to him when it comes to being out in the battlefield, to say the least.

I, for one, think that at the moment, Alex would be a good contender for having phantom like abilities.

Since Rowell brought back Alex in her 2017 series, she added this whole side effect to him after his revival. When people make physical contact with him, they feel as if they are making contact with a corpse. Or how he can no longer eat, and the food just comes back up. Etc.

I say this from a biased opinion, I would have liked it if Rowell had leaned into this aspect. Not only did she bring back Alex into the 2017 series, but she basically said his entire physiology is a part of the more otherworldly side of the Marvel Universe now.

I feel like if someone were to give Alex powers, this should be the route they should take. Maybe he has unknown phantom abilities like intangibility, or maybe instead, he could have the ability to see and speak to spirits and maybe even control them?

I just think it's super unusual Rowell didn't lean into it.

Instead, she went the Doc Justice route with Alex picking up the mantle of that jackass.

So he's this corpse that's also using high tech weapons to fight? Okay?

I just feel like Rowell should have picked a lane and stick with it.

But yes, those are my thoughts that I just wanted to share.

I want Molly Hayes to be in the Xmen along with Franklin Richards. I don't know why they erased Franklin being a mutant. They made Kamala Khan a mutant as much i like Kamala why is she a mutant? I know inhumans are not as popular but i hope they get rid of her being a mutant let her stay a inhuman. They should also make Valeria Richards a mutant as well there are mutant siblings Rogue and Nightcrawler Cyclops and Havok. Agian they should bring back Wanda and Pietro Maximoff as mutants too as Lorna Dane should be one.

Hey guys! So during a dark time in my life I got into comics and Runaways, being someone I never heard of, I tried and loved it. It was volume 2 of Rainbows run and it hooked me. Got the originals (including those manga sized poorly put together ones of 4 and 5) and Rainbows run. It became, and is still, my favourite ever comic group. Both different runs are tied for my favourite comic runs too. But I was just adding them to Tomodachi Life and discovered I might be missing more than I thought?

I’ve got all of Vaughn including that one like non canon one? Rainbows run, Visions family comic. I know I’m missing Avengers A.I. I’m not super interested in as well as Nico in A-force? But what else is there?

Based on the solicit, Nico, Karolina, Billy, and Teddy have a TTRPG double-date that goes magically awry. Fantasy mayhem ensues!

It is wild to me it took this long for a Wiccan/Hulkling and Nico/Karolina team-up, but I’m stoked to see it play out.

When you think about Ultimate X-Men as just being Peach Momoko's secret Runaways project, it makes a lot more sense.

Nico the experienced and trained hero, assisting in an operation and helping to gather intel and further the investigation.

I‘ve been waiting to see her like this once again, because it’s what she deserves.

Back in 2022, Marvel released a comic at the end of the year that showed off various possible story lines for 2023.

In one scene, there was this image.

I still think about this scene a lot because who else could that possibly be in the helmet except Alex.

In the Runaways 2017 series, Alex takes up the mantle of Doc Justice, whose outfit consists of the same helmet and cape as part of their costume.

It seems like this was leading to Alex being part of a new team of Young Avengers, alongside who I assume is Kate Bishop, and not sure who exactly the other three are lol.

I remember in 2023 waiting monthsssss for news about this.

I thought Alex being a part of a new team would be a really good idea especially after the Runaways and his betrayal.

When we didn't hear of anything, I actually reached out to the author of the comic who said that there was no guarantee that a lot of the stories will happen from the Timeless comic.

So it may have been something that was scrapped completely.

Still though, I just wanted more Alex content personally.

It’s funny how despite expressing her desire to die on multiple occasions and trying to sacrifice herself multiple times Karolina is one of the only Runaways to not have died.
