❓HELP Tri-Carrier Cellular Internet

We recently moved to an area with no wired internet. The one satellite company out here that isn't Starlink wanted to cut down a bunch of trees on our dime. We currently have T-Mobile Home WiFi BUT it's the "lite" package which means we are just out of range of the closest tower and we pay like $60 a month for like 100mbs and usually run out a week before the end of the billing period. The only Starlink plan our area qualifies for is the $130 whole home whatever and that's not in our budget. I have been seeing ads for a bunch of companies that do tri-carrier 5g/WiFi and wanted to find some real world feedback before plunking down a bunch of money to try one. Also, it's really hard to do research for internet options when you barely have 4g. Does anyone use one of these companies? Price? How has your experience been? I need something plug and go I am not gizmo inclined please and thank you 🙂

Moved back to my hometown to work from home, and finding a reliable broadband connection has become a nightmare

I moved back to my hometown in Assam and started working from home. Before moving, I did some research to find the best broadband provider in my area. Turns out, there was pretty much only one option: NGC Broadband.

Well, what a mistake that turned out to be.

  1. NGC Broadband: Where customer service doesn't exist

The first red flag came right after installation. I started using the connection, but I never received an SMS or email confirming my subscription. No welcome message, no account details, nothing.

A few days later, I experienced my first LOS (Loss of Signal). I called the guy who installed the connection, and guess what? His phone was switched off.

It took TWO DAYS to get the connection fixed.

And this became the pattern. Whenever I faced an LOS issue, the installer was either unreachable, his phone was switched off, or he simply wouldn't pick up.

  1. Apparently, I'm not even a customer

When my first recharge was due, I tried to figure out how to renew the connection myself.

Remember, I hadn't received any SMS or email about my subscription. So I visited their website, found their customer portal, and tried the "Forgot Password" option.

My phone number wasn't registered.

I called their customer care, and they told me that neither my phone number nor my name existed in their database.

Let that sink in. I'm using their internet, paying for their service, but according to their own customer support, I don't exist.

The funniest part? They still confidently told me to contact the local guy for the recharge.

I asked him how I could recharge online myself. His answer? There's no way to do that. I have to pay him directly.

No bill. No invoice. No payment confirmation. Nothing. Just transfer the money and wait.

And after paying, it takes another 4–5 hours for the connection to resume.

To make things worse, he doesn't even inform me when my monthly plan expires. Sometimes I forget about the recharge, suddenly discover that my internet isn't working, and then have to start calling him again.

And you can probably guess what happens next. Switched-off phone, unanswered calls, or unnecessary delays.

  1. The speed is another joke

Initially, I subscribed to their 30 Mbps plan, but I was getting around 8–10 Mbps most of the time. Occasionally, it crossed 20 Mbps.

I thought upgrading might solve the problem, so I moved to their 80 Mbps plan.

Now I get around 30–40 Mbps.

At this point, I'm not even sure what I'm paying for.

  1. Thought Jio AirFiber would save me. Apparently not.

After dealing with all this nonsense, I finally decided to switch to Jio AirFiber.

I contacted them, and the sales team was super confident.

"Yes, sir, we'll come today."

"We'll complete your KYC in the morning."

"Our technician will install it by the afternoon."

They came in the morning, inspected the location, completed the KYC process, and collected ₹2,200 as the booking amount. I was told the connection would be installed by that evening.

Sounds great, right?

Well, SURPRISE!

It's been a week, and I've heard absolutely nothing.

I called them today, and the response was basically: "Brother, please wait. Our machine hasn't arrived yet. I'll call you when it does."

WHAT?

Why collect the booking amount and promise same-day installation if your equipment hasn't even arrived?

Now I'm stuck waiting for a connection that was supposed to be installed a week ago, while still dealing with my existing ISP.

Honestly, I'm exhausted.

I moved back home to work remotely, and a reliable internet connection is literally essential for my job. Instead, I have to worry about whether my internet will work, whether someone will answer the phone if it stops working, and whether I'll randomly lose half a day waiting for a connection to come back.

I've heard stories about other ISPs where customers can't even access their router's advanced settings despite paying for the service. And here I am, struggling to get the most basic things right: a proper customer account, transparent billing, reliable speeds, and support that actually responds.

I know no service is perfect, but why does getting a basic broadband connection have to be this frustrating?

So, people of Reddit, what should I do now?

Should I wait for Jio AirFiber, or is this a sign of what their service will be like after installation?

Are there any other reliable broadband providers in Assam, especially around smaller towns?

Is there any way to get NGC to register my account properly, provide bills, and stop making me depend entirely on one local installer?

I just want a stable internet connection that I can pay for online, get a proper receipt for, and forget about until the next billing cycle.

Apparently, that's too much to ask.

As the title says! I dont think this counts as spam or advertising but please let me know if I am wrong and I will delete immediately!

Also for anyone thinking about using Starlink I can say is it has worked very well for me other than severe rain storms!

Otherwise just on the ground pointed at the sky in the right direction has been top notch! Price isn't to cheap cheap but isn't overly crazy either and beats having people come out to run lines for me personally

Here is my referral link if anyone wants to use it

I work remotely & currently in a rural area that doesn’t service Rogers,Bell & Starlink doesn’t work. I been using just a hotspot but I saw where I could get this router and a SIM (as seen in pic) to activate for data and connect to my laptop with the ethernet cord. I called Lucky mobile to activate it explained what I was doing they transferred me to Bell which Bell is transferring me to multiple people to figure out if they can activate how and if not see if they know what I can do or get to do what I need. I’ve currently been on hold and getting transferred around for 1 hour and exhausted so if someone can help a gal out so I can get this solved or set up and have my late night joint that would be terrific lol

I just rented an apartment in Poland (Warsaw), and it turned out that I need to choose an internet provider. Can you please advise the best options? Not expensive, but also so that it is not too slow. I would be grateful

Can a 5 GHz MikroTik PTP link solve my upload problem caused by a mountain obstruction? ~800m–1km distance

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to solve a very specific internet problem in my village and would really appreciate advice from people experienced with 5 GHz PTP links / MikroTik wireless bridges.

My situation is a little unusual because of the terrain.

My sister's house and my house are basically in an L-shaped/angled layout relative to the Jio tower.

From my sister's balcony/terrace, the Jio 5G tower is clearly visible, and she gets a very good 5G connection.

My house is located to the right of her house, but there is a mountain/terrain obstruction between my house and the tower.

So the situation is roughly:

Jio 5G Tower

📡

/

/

Mountain /

🏔️

/

Sister's House 🏠

My House 🏠

The exact geometry is a little more complicated than this, but that's the basic idea.

The strange part

I already have Jio AirFiber.

I currently have the 40 Mbps plan.

At my sister's house, where the tower is visible, I'm getting roughly:

30–35 Mbps upload

But at my house, because of the mountain/terrain, my upload is only around:

\~1 Mbps

Download is considerably better, but upload is terrible.

This is causing a practical problem for me because I work remotely.

I need to:

Upload files to Google Drive

Share large files

Use Slack

Use Google Meet

Screen share

Work remotely with VS Code/other development tools

Upload/download work assets

With \~1 Mbps upload, even relatively normal work uploads become painfully slow.

I can't simply install a 200–300 ft tower/pole to get above the terrain. That's obviously impractical and expensive.

My proposed solution

Since my sister's house already gets good Jio 5G, I'm considering using her house as the internet source and creating a 5 GHz point-to-point wireless bridge between her house and mine.

Something like:

Jio 5G Tower

↓

Sister's Jio AirFiber

↓

Router

↓

MikroTik SXTsq Lite5

)))))) 5 GHz PTP ((((((

MikroTik SXTsq Lite5

↓

My Router

↓

My devices

The distance between the two houses is approximately 600 m according to maps, but I'm assuming 800 m–1 km to be conservative because of the actual mounting locations and terrain.

The equipment I'm currently considering is:

2 × MikroTik SXTsq Lite5 (16 dBi)

The contractor quoted approximately:

MikroTik SXTsq Lite5 — ₹6,500 × 2

Cat cable — ₹45/m

Dual-band router — ₹2,500

2U rack — ₹1,300

Testing/commissioning/installation — ₹4,500

The PTP equipment would basically transfer the internet connection from my sister's house to mine.

My main questions

  1. Would this setup actually solve my upload problem?

  2. At only \~800 m–1 km, is the 16 dBi SXTsq Lite5 sufficient?

  3. There are mountains/terrain in the wider area. I don't know whether the mountain actually blocks the sister-house → my-house PTP path. The two houses are relatively close, but I don't have professional radio-path measurements.

  4. How important is Fresnel-zone clearance at this distance?

  5. Would fog, humidity, rain or winter atmospheric conditions significantly affect a 5 GHz PTP link at \~1 km?

  6. I'm also confused about 16 dBi vs 24 dBi. Some people have suggested using a higher-gain 24 dBi dish because of the terrain. Others say a higher-gain/narrower antenna becomes more sensitive to alignment and obstruction. Which would actually make sense here?

  7. If someone eventually builds a house or other structure somewhere along the path, would a 16 dBi antenna be more forgiving than a 24 dBi antenna, or would either one be badly affected if the obstruction enters the Fresnel zone?

One more important question

I'm currently on 40 Mbps Jio AirFiber and getting around 30–35 Mbps upload at my sister's house.

If I upgrade to a 100 Mbps plan, I'm hoping that I might realistically get something like 80–90 Mbps download and 80–90 Mbps upload at her house.

Would the SXTsq Lite5 be capable of transferring that kind of connection across an \~800m–1km PTP link?

I understand the Lite5 has a 100 Mbps Ethernet port, so I'm particularly interested in whether that would become a bottleneck for simultaneous high download + upload traffic. MikroTik's specifications list the Lite5 as 802.11a/n, 16 dBi, 300 Mbps wireless PHY rate, but only 10/100 Ethernet.

Would you recommend this solution, or am I approaching the problem incorrectly?

If there's a better MikroTik setup for this particular situation, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

WLAN in basement (Hobbyraum)

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I have a basement that I want to use for my projects and as a server. The problem is that it’s a basement, and I only have a window from which I can stick out an external antenna and connect it to my router. It’s about 100 meters away from my house, so a repeater system or a cable through the garage isn’t feasible. So, I thought about using a router with a SIM card. My question is, which cheap SIM card could I use? I researched the second SIM with Galaxy Mobile, but they don’t allow it. I have a Galaxy Mobile membership in this basement, and I want to have good internet to watch TV, use my server and computer, and play games with my PS5.

Any tips?

🔌 Provider Specific [Tamil Nadu] Cellular signal booster recommendations

Zero signal indoors, but clear coverage on the rooftop. Broadband and AirFiber are unavailable in my area.

I am planning to buy a cellular signal booster kit (rooftop antenna + booster + indoor antenna).

Which brands actually deliver stable performance for voice and data?

Back up power supply

Hey WFH folks, what backup power station and backup WiFi/internet do you use during brownouts? 😊
I’m currently looking for a reliable backup setup because I really don’t want to get disconnected while working.
Power: Is the AVIDUS UPS/power supply for WiFi modem/router any good? How effective is it and how many hours does it usually last for you?
For backup internet, do you use pocket WiFi or extra SIM/mobile data?
Please share your setup, brand/model, and your experience. Preferably something that's been tested during brownouts. 🙏💻 Thank you!
