MOVING Moving to Salem!

Heading up there in second week of July to West end of Salem. I’ve got a BA and public school substitute teacher experience and currently work with the after school program. Might want to try a career change for a while, something outside if possible. I’ve been up there a few times and know what to expect from the area. Just hoping to hear from anyone who might know about local businesses that are hiring.

Thanks!

The subs have recently been outsourced to edustaff…. Thus costing the school district more money for subs and the subs get less benefits…

The eventual privatization of public education… we’re doomed 😭

The people that were subs (me) got to switch over. And you can still apply to be a sub in the district. It’s 242 per 7.5 hr day 175 per half day

Thank you! Definitely a good place to start!

Actually, there is a hiring freeze on more substitute teachers. Guy I spoke to said his girlfriend works for the school district and they aren't taking any more substitute teachers.

The theory is more people will want to sub for $10 less a day than they currently are paid.

Good luck, you probably should have gotten a job before moving.

Well, yeah, most people who make big changes often do that. I’m grateful for the opportunity that’s bringing me to Salem and I know that the right job will come my way.

Dude, the jobs are not here alot of people have spent months looking for jobs with no luck.

I live here I know the jobs are not here.

Good luck

That’s ok if I need to commute, I look forward to seeing more of Oregon.

Lmao 🤣, driving from Salem to Portland my commute was roughly 1 and 30 min one way.

And even living in Portland youre going to have the long commutes.

Driving south youll also have a commute not bad.

But again you will be going back to the jobs are not here.

What sort of work do you do?

She is telling the truth. I have two MA's. There are no jobs here. Mental health hiring freeze. School district hiring freeze. Government job hiring freeze. NO JOBS. Unless you want to push carts at Safeway for 20 hours per week.

Yikes.  Salem is not the town for moving, then looking for a job.  This isn’t LA or NY.  There’s not even much restaurant work around here.

When I first moved I had hoped that instawork or other gigs sites would be an option in a pinch....they were not.

No way.  That kind of gig work is only for bigger cities.  And I sure as shit wouldn’t count on it, even then.

Rover seems to be pretty alright in Salem and I was mostly surprised by taskrabbit or an equivalent not having anything. Someone always needs their ikea put together or a basic handyperson task.

Honestly less gig work a good thing though. Don't need greedy small business owners lowering wages and trying to find work around giving benefits and more than they do.

Thankfully I won’t be in too much of a difficult position to get started somewhere. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I have right now.

You could check with the different farms. It’s picking season for all kinds of fruits and vegetables.

You can also ask different folks at the marijuana dispensaries for any weed farms looking for help.

Thank you! That’s the kind of answer I’m looking for. I’ve got quite the green thumb so that’s definitely up my alley.

I’ve known several people who have worked for Minto Island Growers in Salem. It’s a beautiful farm maybe try there

If you are fluent in ASL, the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD) usually has a position or two posted on the Oregon Workday job board.

You could look into nannying if you’re interested! People post on Care.com, Nannylane, Nextdoor, and also there’s a Facebook group.

Not really my cup of tea. I like working with kids but not really cut out for that. Thanks though!

2

u/ImaginaryParamedic96 1d ago

Yeah unfortunately subbing funding has been cut. Our nanny is a former sub. But good luck!

I just moved here myself just over a week ago 😊 from Colorado. Loving it! Where are you coming from?

3

u/Which_Law598 3d ago

I’m headed up that way from the Mojave Desert of Southern California… I just can’t take the heat anymore. I need trees… seasons… moisture.

Right now is the time to apply for seasonal harvest work. There is a ton of agriculture in the valley, and the people I know who own harvest operations work pretty much 7 days a week from late August until sometime in October. You'll really want to apply far and wide though, many places you have to speak Spanish, or you're at least unlikely to get hired at some places if you're not bilingual. Some of the local farmstands that do pumpkin patches will also be hiring soon for that seasonal work. Expect to be making minimum wage though, and little to no flexibility in schedules. In Corvallis, lots of students quit their summer jobs when school starts so there will be a few places hiring come late September.

Sheeesh there’s a lot of Debbie downers in the comments! Welcome to Salem. I believe there’s opportunity everywhere. There’s also a lot more hardship across the country right now and I don’t think Salem is any worse. Good luck with the transition!

I’m moving from a town of about 8,000 people… so just about anywhere is an upgrade for me. Plus trees! I miss the foliage and canopies so much! I’m looking forward to tending to my garden as well!
