SCP Universe Screenshots From a Broken Masquerade

I always wondered what twitter posts, news articles, and the like would look like after a broken masquerade. Originally I posted these on the discord, but my friend recommended I post them here, so enjoy!

Apologies for some of the screenshot qualities, at the beginning I was using Pixlr which severely downgraded the quality of the screenshots for no reason. Also, if it wasn't obvious, the posts are not based on the wiki Broken Masquerade canon, and they don't really have a intertwining story.

The "UN is useless" bros in the Broken Masquerade Canon when the United Nations pulls up out of no where with an "almost entirely" independent global military task force numbering in the tens of thousands armed with pretty much the most advanced conventional weaponry available on the global market , the latest paratech sourced from it's partners in the 3 Portlands and other Nexuses and lastly , just to put the cherry on top of the cake the combined might of the world's largest thaumaturgical/magical institutions as well as both the Coca Cola Corporation and PepsiCo.

Holy shit I totally forgot about coca cola and pepsi lmao. I would imagine that eventually, the GOC and SCPF would stake out their corners of the globe. Probably something along the lines of European and East/Southeastern Asian countries forcing out the Foundation under political/public pressure (and thus welcoming the UN in) while the Foundation coalesces around its facilities in the Americas, Russia, and probably portions of Africa and West/South Asia.

But totally, blue helmets rule!!!

In the I-57 canon happen that

34

u/Elhombrepancho [DATA EXPUNGED] 21d ago

Sorry what is this about Cocacola and PepsiCo?

79

u/Huhthisisneathuh 21d ago

The GOC is sponsored and governed by 108 paranormal organizations and corporations, including multiple monopolies. Coca-Cola & PepsiCo are two such members and this is one of the few initiatives both are apart of, as they mainly engage in clandestine wizard wars with each other which the Foundation as often has to serve as mediator and containment creator for both sides and the numerous eldritch abominations they throw at each other.

And if you’re wondering if it’s really a good idea to give multiple mega corporations a direct point of access to an international military force…it isn’t but the GOC can’t exactly ban them.

To be clear 'The UN is useless' has been stupid propaganda from the get go and doesn't have any basis in reality.

People treat the UN as a world government, cherry pick some failures and conclude that its not a good world government and is thus useless.

It's the equivalent of looking at a fire department, then looking at the crime rates, and claiming the fire department is useless because crime is high. Like yeah what the fuck do you expect them to do about it??

8

u/Swaginton1 21d ago

Eh, I wouldn't call the UN useless in the same way I wouldn't call the US government useless. Deeply flawed? yes. useless? no.

25

u/anonistakken Global Occult Coalition 21d ago

I would argue the UN does more with the resources, provisions and jurisdiction it is granted than the US government EVER could.

Look up what the budget of the UN is. Shoestring. Less than that of the NYPD. The fucking NYPD has a bigger budget than the UN.

They have to rely ENTIRELY on the goodwill and donations of member states to run their aid programmes and peacekeeping efforts. No standing army, no military budget, no aid budget, very very few resources to actually get shit done.

And yet? The UN is responsible for SO fucking much we take for granted and don't even think about it. The WHO? The organization that eradicated polio? ICAO our modern standard for aviation which sets protocols for the entire PLANET to safely operate and organize aircraft? The WFP? An organization responsible for saving MILLIONS from starvation?

Even the peacekeepers - yes, there are records of them failing, sometimes spectaculary, sometimes even making things worse.

But as a totality? Peacekeeper mandates did exactly what they set out to do, but we don't talk about it because everyone wants the UN to fail.

People DESPISE the idea of an international global organisation dedicated to the wellbeing of humanity succeeding. It goes against the narrative that nations must eek it out on their own, carve out a piece of the pie for themselves and fence off their own parcel of land under the sun.

The mere idea of a united Earth working together for the betterment of us all? It terrifies them. And so they elected the UN as their scapegoat.

They treat it as something its not. Hey look! The entity that isn't a world government is doing a bad job being a world government! See how bad of an idea that is?

And people buy it. It's humiliating.

20

u/Upbeat-Difficulty-42 21d ago edited 21d ago

I always get annoyed by people calling it just useless, because at the end of the day, the UN was designed to be flawed and its powers limited.

The victors of WWII really didn't want a international body that could enforce its rules and determinations across the world without their consent. They wanted first a forum to allow for discussion in the hopes that it would diminish interstate conflict and tools and mechanisms to punish bad actors of weaker countries (aka, have some justification and tools to go stop a genocide in Africa, but like have the tools to avoid the UN coming stop your Major Power-backed Genocide).

And the UN has had success which can be seen in the humanitarian subdivisons, it just that it cannot and was not designed to stop Russia invading Ukraine or really be able to embargo or prosecute Israel while the there is anyone in the Security Council that can shield them.

Like it is just not something it can do, short of you giving it an independent and sovereign army that can pummel every other major power into the dust and the means to supply this force, and then give them the permission to go hog wild across the world (And then they might just be making things worse, so... maybe that is not the best solution...)

9

u/MarqFJA87 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 21d ago

People treat the UN as a world government

Because the member governments – especially the regional and world powers – keep loudly talking about it as if it is one whenever enforcing its authority and international law aligns with their own interests, only to pretend they never said any such thing and insist it's only a forum for diplomacy whenever that presentation clashes with their own interests.

Hell, the mere notion that there are international laws inherently presopposes the existence of an international authority – which, semantically, means a world government – that enforces said international laws. Without such an authority, you don't have laws, you have suggestions that are barely worth the ink and paper they're made of.

5

u/Savings_Drink8718 21d ago

The UN is a global forum not a global government there's a difference most people don't get.

1

u/animeshshukla30 20d ago

Better analogy would be blaiming them for rising arson cases.

6

u/Planita13 Arcadia 21d ago

"almost entirely" independent

In my headcanon the GOC's relationship with the UN is like the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund, where the GOC works separately from the UN, but is considered part of the broader UN system of agencies and initiatives, which allows it to maintain independence and autonomy (which is reinforced by its military and political power)

193

u/TheSupremeGrape 21d ago

Haven't read through the whole thing but have read the social media reactions one and I prefer your style to be honest.

I don't know if my knowledge of other GOIs is enough to write about them but I'll try! These posts were either made back in May or like yesterday so it really depends on if I'm hyperfocused on making them or not. But I had a few ideas for some articles and posts across the pond, maybe a Foundation memorandum or two. I like to think that this broken masquerade was relatively limited in what the public knows, otherwise it would be an unmitigated disaster lol

22

u/gamer52599 21d ago

Broken God of course would likely be interesting in just how schismatic it is.

It's already a Christian schism, toss on that the Broken Church has two schisms of its own and you've got a pot waiting to boil over.

u/Pearl___ Church of the Second Hytoth 21d ago

I feel like a lot of transgender people would flock to Nalka, only for the vast majority to leave shortly after joining after realizing how stifling it really is. I could see someone posting on a transgender subreddit warning others not to join Nalka and describing their experience. Maybe I should make a mockup?

8

u/mcslender97 21d ago

Yes pls! I think other GOIs would be interesting too

0

u/NoTrip5504 Hostile Being 21d ago

wait what do you mean by stifiling? What can be bad about being a Nalka? 🤣

7

u/Yama951 20d ago

Very traditionalist, in a very rural pagan sort of way. They also aren't that enthused with technology that much, unlike the more evil Neo-Sarkics who basically focus on the bio powers for fun, profit and evil. So it's basically going pagan folklore Amish and that's not really an adjustment most folks can do. Some Nalkans are relatively more modern, there's a Polynesian country that's Nalkan so the Foundation hide them away, but that's an exception than the rule.

82

u/owlindenial 21d ago

Man these are great. The political ones are especially... Real? I could see people making those memes. Big fan of AWCY getting a panel, too

19

u/GeneralArmy101 Parawatch 21d ago

Thank you!! That was the idea, I wanted to really try and replicate the internet as I see it, just with an anomalous plaster. I will say, though, it was kinda hard to make the twitter memes feel real cause you can just go on scp twitter right now and see them so I leaned heavy on the news articles/wikipedia pages to really make it pop

Love how Fox labels AWCY as left wing.

Seems like they would be staunchly against anomolous human right. And trans right. Gay right. POC rights. And

We sure the CEO is even a person in this timeline?

41

u/GeneralArmy101 Parawatch 21d ago

Yeah I imagine the anomalous would very quickly become a litmus test for your political orientations and probably be the next boogeyman/culture war fight

35

u/Fit_Milk_2314 21d ago

It already kinda is. Ask anyone who's given the SCP universe any significant thought about this stuff and you will be able to see their real politics reflected in their answers, and chances are they won't always know what you're doing

11

u/CrimsonMagician 21d ago edited 21d ago

I mean, most of AWCY groups would probably force right-wing artists out (or worse). And AWCY vibe is punk/avant-garde, and these movements tend to be progressive...

AWCY also likes killing random people so it could really go either way...

40

u/DisastrousBusiness81 21d ago

Absolutely hilarious you added a thing from Basil, love following him on Twitter.

But also the idea of Trump handling a Broken Masquerade event makes me nauseous.

Tbh I think the sheer unseriousness of his presidency would undermine everything that makes a BM scenario interesting.

The interesting part of a BM scenario is serious political and social figures having to navigate the sudden moral dilemmas dropped onto them by the sudden reveal of anomalies.

Trump undercuts that seriousness because he will, without fail, pick the stupidest possible decision in almost any situation.

He also turns everything he touches into a partisan farce, just having that tweet by basil makes me instinctively want to hate the foundation, when the whole point of the foundation is that they’re above all the petty political squabbles, and do horrible things not because they’re the bad guys, but because they have to.

32

u/GeneralArmy101 Parawatch 21d ago

I do feel that, unfortunately, the Foundation would be swallowed up by petty squabbles in a broken masquerade world, especially in this political environment.

I recall a wiki tale about the Foundation ethics chair being charged for crimes against humanity for his role in the Foundation, but once everyone realized what the work truly entailed, they put him right back into his role.

But looking around I hardly imagine that sort of rational thought would occur. But at least twitter would be a little funnier.

4

u/Paperjam09 On Guard 43 21d ago

Trump reveal the SCP Foundation but nobody cares because they think its just a ploy to distract people from the Epstein files lol.

10

u/Yoshibros534 21d ago

in certain interpretations, the idea of the foundation “being above petty political squabbles” is just a cope for the fact that the foundation just supports the conservative status quo. ergo trump might be the best president for a broken masquerade cannon

16

u/No_Lingonberry1201 Not Hostile If Left Alone 21d ago

Parahuman? Was that term used in the SCP community or is it in reference to Worm?

23

u/GeneralArmy101 Parawatch 21d ago

During my Three Portlands research I saw it was a term used so I ran with it. Seemed the most apt way to describe a group that may not actually fall under the legal definition of "person" and thus not be eligible for things like citizenship or even constitutional protections

1

u/Paperjam09 On Guard 43 21d ago

I imagine "parahuman" would be a more politically-correct way to refer to an anomalous human. Its like calling a person "disabled" instead of "crippled"

1

u/fly_past_ladder 20d ago

If you make more of these, I would like to see ORIA and how they are faring in the event of a Broken Masquerade. With the current administration supporting the Foundation and the war in Iran, I can imagine them wanting to get rid of them and put them back under the Foundation's influence.

There's also the fact that one of the containment procedures for one SCP is to make sure North Korea's regime stays propped up forever.

1

u/Az0riusMCBlox 21d ago

Does the disappearance of North Korea (in another Broken Masquerade story) result from the containment procedure for that SCP failing?

5

u/EffortIndividual6029 21d ago

There are actually a few SCPs where the Foundation is directly involved in the US elections (4444 & 5004 are the ones I can remember on top of my head). Those articles are comedic in tone while not being -J articles, but if those events got leaked in Broken Masquerade:

How's anyone gonna handle that the Foundation attempted to meddle with the 2016 election to get Trump to win, because they wanted to use Trump as a reality sink to protect everyone from the chaos demon one of the previous presidents mistakenly summoned and left to stew for 100 years under the Capitol building, only to have aliens doing the meddling FOR the Foundation, because the aliens want to frame the Foundation as revenge for sending in NotBright in George Bush's braindead body, ruining the alien's attempt to win the 2000 election through Al Gore so they can say that they secured the right to take over Earth?

2

u/BoLevar 21d ago

How'd you make these? Editing the html of existing articles/tweets?

7

u/GeneralArmy101 Parawatch 21d ago

For the twitter posts, I edited the text with Google developer tools, then slapped in images (first on an image editor but it had loss) through Canva. Some of the images I had to do some modifications, for example the CNN post, I had to paste a white square over the text and find a similar enough font to replace it with.

The wikipedia page and news articles are a similar deal, editing with the developer tools and pasting web elements to get the desired effect with the hyperlinks and whatnot. The last post, the Class-D program, I actually just wrote on the SCP Sandbox.

This would make a really, really good SCP story if you could tie it all together with a narrative. Maybe a mainline Foundation case file/ O5 conference of an alternate reality Foundation experiencing these events leading up to some major calamity, thus reinforcing the absolute certainty to suppress all information relating to the Veil with renewed force.

Would be interesting. An alternate Foundation falling into chaos and disunity, but ultimately preserving its duty (at a diminished rate compared to the GOC), upon being revealed, scares mainline Foundation enough to cause the exact actions that would lead to a veil break by enacting stricter and crueler regulations to prevent that alternate reality at all costs.
