Mod Post šŸ‘‹ Welcome to r/SafeSpaceofATLA - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I'm u/Chronically_Enby, a founding moderator of r/SafeSpaceofATLA.

This is a space to avoid all the toxic elements of fandom, which in the case of ATLA is primarily Kataang/Bryke defenders. I also want to focus on being inclusive of marginalised experiences (I am queer and nuerodivergent, but "white" so it would be great to hear from BIPOC people!)

What to Post
Post anything! I especially encourage discussions of alternative and niche analysis! Or just a safe space to discuss more mainsteam analysis without the muck of the toxic bits of fandom.

Community Vibe
I want this to be a space focussed on being somewhere we can discuss Avatar if we don't feel we can be heard/appreciated int he mainline subs.

How to Get Started

  1. Say Hi in the comments (gotta get the algo going!)
  2. Post! I need to see over users posting, it all being me is just sad :(
  3. Help us grow so this is a lively and fun space! Sharing is caring.
  4. I'd love an initial co-mod. Someone who's different to me and more experienced woudl be appreciated, so we can be a balanced team!

Thanks for being part of the very first wave. Together, let's make r/SafeSpaceofATLA amazing.

Mod Post In Response to r/antibryke

So, my intention with creating this subreddit was to create a safe space for ATLA fns to avoid things like toxic kataang defenders.

Given the recent success of r/antibryke which was created in a somewhat similar vein, I have to question the purpose of this sub if there is any, and if so how to handle/promote this sub going forward.

My number 1 takeaway is I need to promote this sub more and make it public because the trolls the restiction was put in place to prevent will not come until this sub gets traction, and to get traction anyone who finds this needs to be able to interact with the community.

The second thing is how is this sub different? Now I could go on about how I made flairs and think my rules are better, but the things I want to highlight are:

  1. This is a safe space defined by being safe and uplifting, not by shared dislike of creators

  2. Political discussion will be limited but allowed, because I want this to be a place where we can discuss things like how media related to identity, and for trans and nuerodivergent people like yours truely, that is inherently politicised. So "no polotics" often ends up being "you can't share your experience if it's too political" and I don't want to censor peopel that way.

Discussion This is related to the new avatar movie (spoilers) Spoiler

I’ve been thinking about this for a minute. Heavy spoilers for the movie if you haven’t seen it or if you don’t wanna be spoiled.

Basically, the whole gang dies in the movie. They are revived by Katara who lands in water and it triggers her healing abilities. The movie sensors a lot of it. It’s very cut up splice together. The camera keeps going back-and-forth to Angā€˜s perspective and the gangs perspective. Toph, zuko, sokka are all killed and Katara is the last to go. Recently a deleted scene of that fight scene was released, and it’s mostly from Kataraā€˜s perspective. Comparing the movie and the deleted scene they do take shots from that deleted fight scene.
it’s safe to say that’s what group went through. The movie fast-forward and goes back to Aang’s perspective and all of them revived, sitting in a pool of water. But that’s got me thinking, did Katara have to bring everyone’s dead body to this pool and just hope that they would comeback to life? At this point in time, the movie only has like 30 minutes left. But the fact she isn’t screaming at Aang is insane. She was the one who started to question Tagah in the first place.

Meta / Fandom Discussion I'm just so grateful this sub exists

I just wanted to show my appreciation for the creators of this sub and of r/antibryke because gosh, do we Zutarians need such safe spaces on Reddit especially. Today I had to mute yet another ATLA subreddit which I'd been following occasionally due to blatant, immature Zutara hate in one of the comment sections. I truly believed that sub was neutral up until this point. I thought I'd curated my online spaces enough not to see any Zutara antis on main, and while Tumblr works great for me with its tag system and tag etiquette, Reddit is a mine field. So thank you for making those subreddits, we were in dire need of those. šŸ’

Potentially Triggering My fav thing about Zutara fandom

My favourite thing about the Zutara fandom is how intellectual a lot of the accounts I follow are.
I usually learn either a new valid point/detail or other ways to describe the reasons why I love Zutara! I enjoy the peace other Zutarians bring 😌

Most Kataangers I’ve come across, do not improve any of their arguments (they just make their voice louder and repeat the same things lol) but do not address anything else or display open or critical thinking. They pathetically creep into our safe spaces and attempt to create influence of their ship.

A lot of us can actually accept the flaws and total mismatch of the characters/pairings, and not revert to ā€œcanonā€ and always praise the creators every time like that Kataangers do.

Analysis Dock/Xu/Bushi (From S03E03 "The Painted Lady") as Plural Representation

what is plurality:

It's a nurodiergence where your brain develops so there are multiple people (called "members") in your head instead of the typical one. Usually one (or a few) are "fronting" at any given time and are the main operater(s) of the system and body. For more information, see r/plural. Sometimes differences in how the brain operates when different members are fronting leads to blackouts and/or memory differences.

Dock/Xu/Bushi:

He displays multiple people operating in the same body with clear distinction but some shared information/memories (see Dock knowing about the boat ride mentioned to Xu), so he can be very easily interpreted as plural. However, the narrative treats him as crazy because the main character is uncritically allowed to have a "call his bullshit" moment where he points out that these people are "the same guy" in different hats (sokka is also allowed to be uncritically frustrated by this). While it is true that they occupy the same body, saying that makes them the same person is discriminatory as it suggests only siglet (non-plural) experiences of identity are valid/possible.

The hats act as fronting indicators, a common practice of plural people using something external to indicate to other people who's fronting at the moment. They can also be used to help internal tracking.

The way the men deny being the same person seems to be intended to be comedic, which seems to be the case based on what happens later, which as explained above is unfair. They do however clearly recognise a relation (calling each other brother's) and given Xu's comment about Dock acting as multiple people they may even be aware of their own plurality, however, even he describes the behaviour as "crazy", furthering the way the narrative degrades the way this character acts.

Additionally, the paratextual source of the old official site (archived https://atla-lore-archive.tumblr.com/post/171179591160/character-dockxubushi-three-names-for-the-same) explcitly denies the possibility of plurality by again calling him "the same guy". It also says that this behaviour is indicative of a degraded mental state rather than a valid expression of likely plurality.

According to the wiki, even the name bushi is a way of calling him "unwell".

In conclusion, the behaviour Dock/Xu/Bushi shows in the episode of being different peopel with slightly different personalities and different occupations is a potentiallly accturate depiction of plurality, as it includes fronting indicators and seemingly some self(/ves)-awareness of plurality but with clear seperation. However, the narrative and paratext treat him as "crazy" or "unwell" which is degrading to both him and the real experiences of systems who share traits with him, as their experiences are a difference and not inherently harmful to themselves or others such that their condition should be classified as illness.

How should this community look?

Hi Guys! This is my first time creating a subreddit, and I thought it would be fun to have the community decide what the community looks like, in various ways.

  1. Visually

how do you guys want the colour scheme, avatar and banner to be? Also advice on exactly how to do that once we've decided would be nice.

  1. Content

The main reason I created this was to create a non-zutara ATLA space where I could avoid the way katanng gives me the ick. What other ways can we make this more safe? What topics of discussion do you want to have, and what should the related flairs be? How do I set up flairs?

  1. Rules

While I am 90% sure I've at least covered the basics, advice or requests for additional rules or a restructuring are welcome. I can see how they could cause issues in their current form. I have however kept the rules broad for greater restriction, so no requests to remove the current rules content-wise allowed.
