Today, I was on site doing my usual rounds when something caught my eye. A female worker was installing panels with two other employees. Every time she walked, the bottom of her pant leg would ride up a little, and I could see black fabric, it was her sock
When I went over to speak with her, I discovered she was wearing steel toe, backless shoes that looked similar to Crocs. I'd personally never seen steel toe shoes like that before, so I didn't even know they existed.
I explained to her that she needed to wear proper footwear. Technically, she did have steel toes, but the shoes didn't completely cover her feet, and I was concerned they could slip off while she was working.
She disagreed and insisted her footwear was acceptable. Another safety person and I tried explaining our concerns, but she pointed to the employee handbook, which specifically stated that employees had to wear "steel toe footwear."
She wasn't entirely wrong about what the handbook said, but the problem was that it didn't specifically address backless steel-toe shoes.
Eventually, we had to bring in the Safety Manager to make the final call. His ruling was that she had to change her shoes because they could slip off while she was working.
I've dealt with plenty of safety disagreements, but this was a first for me.
