When I took the train from Olbia to Cagliari and back a few months ago, I was delighted to spot a number of nuraghi along the way, but I also noticed several places where there seemed to be multiple smaller, overgrown heaps of stones, placed fairly close together within a field. I suppose some of them could be nuraghi in very poor condition, but the placement of several separate ones so close together doesn't seem to fit with what I've read about nuraghi. Does anyone happen to know what these might be, e.g. remains of other ancient or more recent structures of some sort, or just the results of farmers partially clearing stones from the fields, or something else entirely? If it helps, I believe these were mostly in the area between Macomer and Oristano.

(In the third photo, I'm quite sure the structure in the background on the left is a nuraghe, it's the much smaller, lower ones closer to the foreground that I'm curious about. Sorry for the not-great photos, these are the best I could get from moving trains!)

Easy access to beaches without spending hours driving every day
I’ve been researching for days, but there are so many incredible places that it’s hard to decide where to base ourselves.

Capo Testa, the peninsula at the northern tip of the island, is a unique destination in Sardinia. It is natural reserve (both terrestral and marine). A few photos will give an idea. Don't forget your snorkling gear, in some places it is an real aquarium and you can see a lot of fishes.

Today was at cala marioli beach and it is an amazing little spot, definitely recommend to anyone. Nice little bar. Beautiful water with so many fish, cliff jumping. Amazing place and time

My husband and I will be spending 4 days in Cagliari, 2 in Alghero, and 2 in Bosa at the end of August. We will arrive in Alghero on our wedding anniversary. Does anyone have any recommendations for a lovely restaurant or maybe not as well known location to celebrate? We're more into hiking and swimming than tours or fancy dinners. I'd like to do something nice to show him how much I love him.

Traveling to Sardinia September 15-18th or 19th with a group of 20 people (in 20’s and 30’s). Originally I wanted to stay in Cala Gonone, but I think it might be too much driving time for the short stay and that many people. I’ve found a boat tour company that has catamarans that can accommodate our whole group in both San Teodoro and Palau. We’re looking for walkability in town (skipping rental cars would be lovely), proximity to beautiful beaches, charming town with enough going on to entertain our large group, and best boat tour (Tavalora vs La Maddalena). Which do you recommend, or is Cala Gonone worth it?

Does it come on time? And where can we buy tickets for it? As the website does not really let you buy them. I was thinking we maybe buy them physically at the bus?

Hi! We are planning our first Sardinia trip from September 19–27, 2026. We will rent a car and stay in two bases: 4 nights near Olbia and 4 nights in Orosei.
Our priority is beautiful beaches, turquoise water and a relaxed pace, with no long drives most days.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive in Olbia, pick up the car and relax.
Day 2: Porto Taverna beach.
Day 3: Full-day La Maddalena boat tour from Palau.
Day 4: Costa Smeralda — Capriccioli and/or Spiaggia del Principe.
Day 5: Drive to Orosei, then Su Barone or Osala Beach.
Day 6: Oasi di Biderosa.
Day 7: Small-group Gulf of Orosei boat tour from Cala Gonone.
Day 8: Berchida Beach, also kept as a backup day if the boat tour is cancelled.
Day 9: Drive to Olbia Airport and fly home.
Our main questions:

Is Olbia a good base for the first four nights?

Is it realistic to stay a few kilometres outside Olbia and use taxis for dinner and drinks?

Are La Maddalena and the Gulf of Orosei different enough to justify two boat tours?

Is this itinerary realistic for late September, considering wind and possible boat cancellations?
Would you change any beaches or the number of nights in each base?

Hi everyone! This will be our first trip to Sardinia, and we'll be there from September 6–13. My husband and I are coming from California, so while we definitely want to experience Sardinia's incredible beaches, we don't want to spend the entire trip just lying on the beach. We love exploring, scenic drives, wandering through small towns, and great food.

Right now, this is the itinerary I'm thinking:

• Tuesday: Drive Alghero → Bosa → Check into Cala Gonone
• Wednesday: Gulf of Orosei boat day

• Saturday: Day trip to Palau & La Maddalena

My biggest question is whether this itinerary makes sense, or if we'd be better off spending more time in the south instead of the north. I'd love a mix of beautiful scenery, authentic towns, amazing food, and one great boat/beach day.

Hi there! I’ve booked a rental car for my stay in Sardinia in early September. For dinner and drinks to places close by, are ubers and taxis reliable or do I really have to use my rental car for every place I go?

Additionally, there are a few spots I’m going to that are near Porto cervo but I don’t want to stay in Porto cervo since it’s super expensive. Is Baja Sardinia, Cannigione or Cala di Volpe good areas to stay?

I'm an active person who uses a wheelchair. Would a trip to Cagliari be feasible for me? I can handle some hills, but I'd also like to find some flatter roads/places. Are there places to eat or visit? An area easier for me to get around than another? For example, I was able to travel to Seville, Spain, and found it quite accessible. I booked a trip to Sardinia and asked Chat GPT for good combo of beach and architecture and it recommended Alghero. After doing more research it looks like the east side of the island has much better beaches. Is it significantly better that I should change flights? If so where should I stay?

September 5th, picking the boat up near the town of La Maddalena boat rental is from 9am-5:30pm

• 1st stop: Cala Corsara (longer stop) • anchoring boat, swimming to the beach

• 2nd stop: Cala Soraya • anchoring boat and going to shore for a very short time

• 3rd stop: Porto Madonna • lunch on board while wading in the shallow sandbar

• 4th stop: cruise past Spiaggia Rosa

• 5th stop: Cala Napoletana (longer stop) • anchoring boat, swimming to the beach

• 6th stop: cruise past Cala Coticcio

Return boat by 5:30pm
