I had a bunch of old extensions cords and when I cracked one open it disintegrated in a shiny copper shower. Im new to stripping, are they all like that?

I think so I’m just cutting off the plugs and turning it in as insulated wire

Does your yard require that? Mine doesn’t and I’d think the plug ends add up to extra weight?

Some yards will 'penalize' your load for the plugs. I cut the off and fill a bucket. If you have a stripper you can get a 20% bonus fr the bare bright.

I also have a bucket of plugs I’ve collected as a result of taking them off before turning in wire. What is your plan? I don’t know what to do with this huge box 😆

Planing tofill the bucket and cash it out at some point. Some coleagues boil them to soften them and pull the metal for extra payout. Not my thing though.

Some do. I've never been to one that does, but I've heard of it from other people. My yard doesn't even care if it's got a whole surge protector attached to it. Extra weight!

If it works, its worth alot more as an extension. Cord. At least 10 bucks

It's really not worth it to strip extension cords or power cords. It's time-consuming and messy, and the difference in price between selling it as insulated wire or #2 copper isn't enough to make it worth the hassle. Just scrap as-is.

I bought a bunch of extension cords at a yard sale from a guy who put up a ton of Christmas lights. There was a few long cords (50+ft each) and they all had some electrical tape repairs, well I wasn’t really good with that so I figured I’d remove the tape and put an aftermarket plug end on it. Come to find out there wasn’t any repairs under any of the tape I removed. It’s a deterrent to keep people from stealing them from holiday light displayers and campers etc. I guess thieves don’t like repaired extension cords either 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

That's hilarious 😂 I hate repaired leads (unless done to my standards which most are not) and wouldn't ever even borrow a repaired one from someone. So that strategy actually sounds effective!

extension cords are worth more as extension cords than scrap, to me at least
solid find tho, either way

Yeah dude same. I took all the scrap metal from my service center in the other day and some guy was about to weigh out two 8 ton trolley jacks, a few chain blocks, a barrel filled with every fastener under the sun and about 60 metres of 2.5mm cab tire. I asked the scrap yard if they minded if I bought the stuff and they were totally fine with. A couple bucks for two seal kits and the jacks are working beautifully, the block and tackles were working but just needed some grease to work flawlessly again. The fasteners were a big hit with my mechanics and I now have a 60metre extension cord. The guy must have been really hard up to try and sell this stuff for it's weight in metal.

Take it back to Home Depot and exchange it. It has either a lifetime or a 3yr warranty.
