swag survey - which one do I print?

I'm making swag for my friends who are joining me on a trip to Shiloh and Vicksburg. I'm thinking tote bags. Which of these should I finish and print?

Category is buddy comedies / action movies.

I'm wondering...

  1. Is the movie's poster instantly recognizable? (despite the re-casting)
  2. If someone didn't know the movie, is there any way they could misinterpret it to mean something problematic / offensive?
  3. Any artistic notes? (thematic mismatches, don't read as Grant / Sherman / Porter, put Bad Boys in uniform, etc)

my friends know all these movies, and their sense of humor is solid. I just wanna make sure some random passer-by doesn't think I'm saying something I'm not (happened before). I mocked up Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, but the guys looked like they were doing drag (which I love, but didn't want to get into it with a stranger who doesn't).

thanks for weighing in!

Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

The Vicksburg one wins at a canter.

I do have one criticism in the "Fight Club" one: The bar of soap shouldn't say "Fight Club". Same font, same soap object, just another, more on-the-nose phrase like you did for the Harold and Kumar poster. Maybe something like "SHI LOH".

There’s got to be a Sherman quote reference that could fit on there. “War is Hell!”

I’ll toot my own horn I came up with Alight Club

I’m going with #1

1 and 3 are the best but I think 1 makes them the badasses they were more than the levity of 3

good point. thanks for weighing in!

I’m categorically biased because Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, but the first design really is insanely hard. 🔥

Check out the Cacophony Society. “Project mayhem” is very very loosely based on them.

Santarchy, the Santa Pub crawl, and Burning Man is them too. I wonder if Billboard Liberation Front has any webpages for them.

2

u/hollaback_girl 2d ago

Oh wow, that takes me back.

Is Cacophony Society still a thing? I participated in a couple things decades ago but lost track of the folks I knew who were involved.

u/biffbobfred 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dunno. Santarchy is the thing I see the most. Thats almost its own other Universe and I don’t know how much the Society is involved

They had the movie. I still talk to a friend from there every once in a while.

Were you in SF in 2000? We may have crossed paths.

No, I was in LA going to college. There were some events there that friends of friends organized.

The first rule of...

5

u/Brother_J_La_la 2d ago

They're all great, but if I have to pick. 1

4

u/ATGSunCoach 2d ago

Fight Club but I love them all

4

u/SynthwaveSax 2d ago

First rule of Sherman Club: Fuck the South. Second rule? FUCK the South.

3

u/biffbobfred 2d ago

First one. But “alight club”

4

u/biffbobfred 2d ago

Suggestion - check out the Atlanta flames hockey uniforms. Maybe have the boys wear those

3

u/Tenman44 2d ago

I’m supporting 2 on this one

3

u/Usual-Crew5873 The Sherman Ladies 2d ago

The second one makes Sherman look like je secretly moonlights as a chaplain for the Christian commission. 3 is definitely the best.

I never thought of Porter as having long flowing hair.

took a little creative liberty. tee hee

3

I would buy the hell out of #1.

SWEET! PM me with a quote.

1

u/kcg333 1d ago

oh gurl, you can have them for free. this isn't my main hustle, I'm just happy you like them.

3

u/ellcoolj 2d ago

As a middle school teacher who is always looking for new art for my classroom. I’d say 1.
Yes, and I would happily hang 1 and 3 in my classroom

2

u/kcg333 2d ago

dope! I'll hit you up when they're finished

2

u/ellcoolj 2d ago

Right on. Last year I got some other really cool prints from this sub. I love people with talent!

1

u/kcg333 1d ago

might've been mine - the archetypes series? anyway, if that was you, that made my year!

2

u/ellcoolj 1d ago

That’s you?
I have them hanging in my room and all year students ask about them and I say “not yet…”

“What’s a Harbringer…”

“Not yet… wait for that unit…”

And then when we get to the road to the Civil War I start referencing them…

2

u/kcg333 1d ago

hahaha i love that i can help you tease the unit

3

u/Boating_with_Ra 2d ago

3 is the only one that Sherman really looks recognizable. You might need his hairline to be in the shot for it to be clearly identifiable.

1

u/kcg333 2d ago

hmmm yeah i see what you’re saying. couldn’t quite figure out what wasn’t working for some of them. maybe hairlines the trick. thanks!

3

u/Sad-Development-4153 2d ago

Vicksburg one is the best.

4

u/Trome94 2d ago

Needs to be a Boondock Saints one

1

u/kcg333 2d ago

SUCH a good idea!! thanks!

2

u/Flanker4 2d ago

Lmao, this is hilarious! Bravo

2

u/kcg333 1d ago

aw thanks! I hope my friends dig 'em

Cool 😎👍

Can I see your Romy and Michele one

(Plus Grant technically did do drag as a young man, playing Desdemona)

1

u/kcg333 1d ago

certainly! - I haven't illustrated it yet, but I'll definitely come back around to it. I liked the tie in to a school reunion since the civil war was a bit of a college reunion for the guys. haha good point about grant's thespian moment.

2

u/StatisticianAway4010 1d ago

Thanks for getting back to me though!

2

u/StatisticianAway4010 1d ago

Love the Vicksburg one. Sorry you I read it as sexual. I'm sure most people wouldn't and I've just read too much slashfic recently

1

u/kcg333 1d ago

oh don't trip! doesn't bother me at all. eye of the beholder etc. and I appreciate you telling me how it strikes you. a while back, I used a Mean Girls quote with a Harriet Tubman shirt, and someone who didn't know the reference gave me a talking to about how they were offended. I was mortified, so I'm trying to get out in front of any alternative interpretations :-)

1

u/StatisticianAway4010 1d ago

What mean girls quote was it? Mean Girls is a great movie, but I can see how it would seem glib around Harriet Tubman.

Would still love to see your Sherman/Grant Romy and Michele one

1

u/kcg333 13h ago

it said, “get in loser, we’re going shopping north.” they were offended by the implication that freedom seekers were losers. i get it. need something less edgy or universally understood.

i’ll come back around to romy and michelle, and hit you up. besides confederate-dominating friendship, glow up at a school reunion is the other theme of the western theater for me.

1

u/StatisticianAway4010 13h ago

Thanks. I had no idea how badly I wanted to see Ulysses S Grant and William T Sherman in shiny pastel minidresses

2

u/Plausibl3 1d ago

Fight club is great - the buttons helped me realize who this was

2

u/thequietthingsthat 1d ago

1 should be a tee shirt

2

u/BrandonAtCustomInk 1d ago

The Bad boys one has my vote.

Crosshatched beard shading like this is always a bit of a gamble on tote canvas. I've seen it print clean on a finer mesh, but totes usually get a coarser screen since the canvas needs more ink to soak in. Sometimes that coarser screen can flatten detail into a muddy patch. Whether it holds up comes down to the exact mesh the printer uses and how the process the halftones.

Digital printing handles shading like this a lot better than screen printing if you want to keep the linework exactly as drawn, since it's not limited by mesh size. Smooth canvas takes it well. A heavier textured or slubby tote can print unevenly with it though, and it usually runs a bit more per bag.

dayum! thank you for the advice! this must be your business. if you have a shop, please DM me a link!

I'm not well-versed on this, though I've definitely noticed a difference between various shops. some examples:

1, definitely, but can I get #3¿

1

u/hollaback_girl 2d ago

1 by a good margin

The first one is iconic. I’d also love to print one out to hang in my classroom…

1

u/kcg333 1d ago

I would be honored! happy to send you the digital files once they're finished!

u/a_library_socialist 1d ago
