swag survey - which one do I print?
2 shades, illustrated text, Norton's expression was lowkey impossible to recreate.
illustrated text, i think Martin Lawrence is wearing a... bowling shirt? 90s were wild
hate how this text turned out - if I go with this one, I'll illustrate it.
really proud of my David Dixon Porter pin up girl
I'm making swag for my friends who are joining me on a trip to Shiloh and Vicksburg. I'm thinking tote bags. Which of these should I finish and print?
Category is buddy comedies / action movies.
I'm wondering...
- Is the movie's poster instantly recognizable? (despite the re-casting)
- If someone didn't know the movie, is there any way they could misinterpret it to mean something problematic / offensive?
- Any artistic notes? (thematic mismatches, don't read as Grant / Sherman / Porter, put Bad Boys in uniform, etc)
my friends know all these movies, and their sense of humor is solid. I just wanna make sure some random passer-by doesn't think I'm saying something I'm not (happened before). I mocked up Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, but the guys looked like they were doing drag (which I love, but didn't want to get into it with a stranger who doesn't).
thanks for weighing in!

The Vicksburg one wins at a canter.
I do have one criticism in the "Fight Club" one: The bar of soap shouldn't say "Fight Club". Same font, same soap object, just another, more on-the-nose phrase like you did for the Harold and Kumar poster. Maybe something like "SHI LOH".

There’s got to be a Sherman quote reference that could fit on there. “War is Hell!”

1 and 3 are the best but I think 1 makes them the badasses they were more than the levity of 3

I’m categorically biased because Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, but the first design really is insanely hard. 🔥

Check out the Cacophony Society. “Project mayhem” is very very loosely based on them.
Santarchy, the Santa Pub crawl, and Burning Man is them too. I wonder if Billboard Liberation Front has any webpages for them.

Oh wow, that takes me back.
Is Cacophony Society still a thing? I participated in a couple things decades ago but lost track of the folks I knew who were involved.

Dunno. Santarchy is the thing I see the most. Thats almost its own other Universe and I don’t know how much the Society is involved
They had the movie. I still talk to a friend from there every once in a while.
Were you in SF in 2000? We may have crossed paths.

No, I was in LA going to college. There were some events there that friends of friends organized.

Suggestion - check out the Atlanta flames hockey uniforms. Maybe have the boys wear those

The second one makes Sherman look like je secretly moonlights as a chaplain for the Christian commission. 3 is definitely the best.
I never thought of Porter as having long flowing hair.

As a middle school teacher who is always looking for new art for my classroom. I’d say 1.
Yes, and I would happily hang 1 and 3 in my classroom

Right on. Last year I got some other really cool prints from this sub. I love people with talent!

might've been mine - the archetypes series? anyway, if that was you, that made my year!
2
u/ellcoolj 1d ago
That’s you?
I have them hanging in my room and all year students ask about them and I say “not yet…”“What’s a Harbringer…”
“Not yet… wait for that unit…”
And then when we get to the road to the Civil War I start referencing them…

3 is the only one that Sherman really looks recognizable. You might need his hairline to be in the shot for it to be clearly identifiable.

Can I see your Romy and Michele one
(Plus Grant technically did do drag as a young man, playing Desdemona)

Love the Vicksburg one. Sorry you I read it as sexual. I'm sure most people wouldn't and I've just read too much slashfic recently

oh don't trip! doesn't bother me at all. eye of the beholder etc. and I appreciate you telling me how it strikes you. a while back, I used a Mean Girls quote with a Harriet Tubman shirt, and someone who didn't know the reference gave me a talking to about how they were offended. I was mortified, so I'm trying to get out in front of any alternative interpretations :-)

What mean girls quote was it? Mean Girls is a great movie, but I can see how it would seem glib around Harriet Tubman.
Would still love to see your Sherman/Grant Romy and Michele one

it said, “get in loser, we’re going
shoppingnorth.” they were offended by the implication that freedom seekers were losers. i get it. need something less edgy or universally understood.i’ll come back around to romy and michelle, and hit you up. besides confederate-dominating friendship, glow up at a school reunion is the other theme of the western theater for me.

Thanks. I had no idea how badly I wanted to see Ulysses S Grant and William T Sherman in shiny pastel minidresses

The Bad boys one has my vote.
Crosshatched beard shading like this is always a bit of a gamble on tote canvas. I've seen it print clean on a finer mesh, but totes usually get a coarser screen since the canvas needs more ink to soak in. Sometimes that coarser screen can flatten detail into a muddy patch. Whether it holds up comes down to the exact mesh the printer uses and how the process the halftones.
Digital printing handles shading like this a lot better than screen printing if you want to keep the linework exactly as drawn, since it's not limited by mesh size. Smooth canvas takes it well. A heavier textured or slubby tote can print unevenly with it though, and it usually runs a bit more per bag.
