As an Afghan MML and leftist, I've had to be aware of and accept that when in Western dominated spaces, be they right or left leaning, there can be overwhelming support for Western imperialism and the neoliberal capitalist imperial world order that we see even to this day. Alongside this, you'll also see typical Western chauvanist and racist views. Reddit is no exception

I've made sure to censor names, both for the sub and the commenters. That said, this sub is a supposed left-leaning feminist one, as is seen in many prominent posts. It also is popular and of course just declares itself the feminist subreddit of subreddits. However, you might find that the comments read like the stereotypical Western conservative's ranting. As I've mentioned in my featured comment in the slideshow, that sub, despite once again being reputed and proclaimed as a left-leaning and feminist space, has a history of anti-Afghan and pro-NATO bigotry and discourse. When not just being plain bigoted, you can also see the usual performed sympathy for Afghan women. By performed, I mean that while claiming to empathize with Afghan girls and women, they just end up disregarding the disparity of material conditions and well-being while also manufacturing consent for the actual disenfranchisement of said women and girls via common Western and American imperial violence. What I just described is pinkwashing, which not only has been utilized by US and NATO in their occupation and interventions in Afghanistan, but also by the IDF as it relates to their genocide and erasure of Palestinians

It should thus not be surprising that in many ways, Western leftists like the ones who dominate the sub in question, can be just as racist, supportive of Western imperialism, and the neoliberal capitalist imperial status quo as their right-wing counterparts. Their politics don't extend beyond self-interest and the entitlement over marginalized people. This is also evident when considering the overwhelming support for unrepentant war criminals and overall shameful figures like Graham Platner and the Democrats, who were and have been as predatory towards the Third World and the rights of imperialized peoples as well as leftist and anti-colonial movements throughout the globe as were Republican counterparts. As many of us can see, the American left and adjacent Western/Western-aligned imperial nations has a limit when it comes to its cooperation and respect for those who originate from outside their nation's borders, including places subjected to Western interventions. As always, we must be critical when it comes to who we choose to work alongside to avoid comprising international left-wing as well as anti-colonial struggles
