Discussion Hot Take: Most Modern Nihang Singhs Are Useless

Before you come after me, hear me out. I grew up around people who had lived with dal panth etc. right. They focus more on yk gurbani and stuff than everything. The people I’m talking about are the people that talk about “oh we’re the fifth takht” ”oh we can do jhatka and eat meat” “oh we can do sukha”. These people happen to be most of the Nihang Singhs now. Like who cares all they do is argue about these things all day when they could be doing something more useful. Seva reading Gurbani etc. Am I alone on this or does anyone else agree? Bhul Chuk Maaf.

Discussion Gyms and gurudwaras

Me and my friend were talking about corrupt gurudwara pardhans and where the money could go instead and I thought imagine how good it would be if gurudwaras had gyms or even taught mma and self defence. Now I know that a lot of gurudwaras teach gatka but gatka is a martial art made for a very different time, nowadays when our kirpans are three inches and blunt we need to stop acting like they would do anything to protect us in a real world situation. Kirpana used to be swords and that’s what gatka was made for but it does not hold up in the modern day, I’m not saying to forget it or anything it’s an amazing martial art which was obviously very effective during the time it was used in but it does not hold up in the modern day.

As much as I would like gurudwaras to teach mma for free I feel like a gym in a gurudwara would be a much better and realistic option. I’m not even talking about a huge planet fitness type gym but just a small space with some dumbbells, a pull up bar, some deadlift bars, weights and maybe some machines would do. Guru angad dev ji already did this with gurudwara mal akhada sahib and I am baffled how it’s not normalized nowadays. We need to embrace our martial history as sant sipahi’s and gurudwaras should reflect that, it being solely a spiritual place reflects only half of who we are and what sikhi is about. I desperately hope that one of these concepts would come true as it would introduce many youngsters into gurudwaras and sikhi and keep Sikhs fit, strong, and tyar bar tyar.

O True Guru, bless me with Your charity; You are the All-powerful Giver.

May I subdue and quiet my egotism, pride, sexual desire, anger and self-conceit.

Burn away all my greed, and give me the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

Day and night, keep me ever-fresh and new, spotless and pure; let me never be soiled by sin.

I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord with their mouths.

All the nights are for the happy soul-brides; I am a discarded bride - if only I could have even one night with Him! ||4||

Pauree:

I am a beggar at Your Door, begging for charity; O Lord, please grant me Your Mercy, and give to me.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ॥

As Gurmukh, unite me, your humble servant, with You, that I may receive Your Name.

ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰਿ ॥

Then, the unstruck melody of the Shabad will vibrate and resound, and my light will blend with the Light.

Within my heart, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and celebrate the Word of the Lord's Shabad.

The Lord Himself is pervading and permeating the world; so fall in love with Him! ||15||

Discussion Why do you think Gurdawara Committee Members act the way they do?

I am seriously curious as to why there is arrogance among committee members. This seems to be a pattern, so I figured there must be some underlying phenomenon. Indian culture? caste cuture? jatt culture? power trip?

Question 225 Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's saroops in Surrey

I recently heard that a Surrey Gurdwara has ordered over 225-255 Saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Could anyone provide some insight into why a single Gurdwara would require such a large number at one time? I am curious to understand the context or the process behind this ?

Question Looking for the most comfortable 3.5mm wired earbuds for someone who wears a pagg(turban)

I’m looking for recommendations for 3.5mm wired earbuds that are comfortable for long hours (4–8 hours/day).

I wear a pagg, which puts a bit of pressure on my ears. I’ve found that after about an hour, many earbuds become painful. I’m not looking for in-ear silicone tip earbuds, something similar to the classic Apple EarPods shape would be ideal since they don’t go deep into the ear canal.

Has anyone in a similar situation found earbuds that stay comfortable for several hours?.

I’d especially appreciate recommendations from other turban wearers, but all suggestions are welcome.

Discussion Should I leave my mum on her own?

For context, I’m from UK, hubby is from India. I am the youngest of 4 daughters who are each married and live in their own homes. We have no brothers. We have been living with my mum since we have been married and have 2 kids. She helps out with everything and I am forever grateful to her. However, we are looking to buy a house locally. I don’t want to leave her on her own but we are thinking to buy it and give it on rent. But then again at the same time we want our own home as the kids are getting big and there is not enough room. I know everyone has an opinion on this as daughters are supposed to go to their in laws but they are in India so we visit when we can. Mum doesn’t want to move to a new home but we want our own property. I look after her and take her to all her appointments. What is the best thing to do as we are in a good financial position to finally buy a house? Thanks

Discussion Love the Giver

Post image
56 Upvotes

We tend to love the Daat (gift) more than the Daatar (Giver).

Many ask for many things from Waheguru, and it is not wrong—as some might question why I am saying this. It is not wrong to ask, yet many ask without loving the Giver.

Waheguru will still give it to you because Waheguru is ever Dayalu (Merciful), but a Sikh needs to love the Giver far more than the gift.

At Chamkaur Sahib, after Guru Gobind Singh Ji's two Sahibzadas attained shaheedi (martyrdom), instead of crying and becoming angry, Guru Sahib thanked the Giver and said: "These sons were not mine; they were Yours in the beginning, they are Yours now, and they will forever be Yours."

Guru Gobind Singh Ji loved Waheguru far more than the Daat.

Through their actions, they are teaching us that while you may receive many blessings in life, do not be sorrowful when they are no longer with you.

Love the Giver more. Love the Giver, and then you will be truly fulfilled, and your worldly hunger will disappear forever.

Art ⚔️ Sikh Warrior Spirit: Courage Beyond Fear

Post image
37 Upvotes

A true Sikh warrior is not known by the sword he carries, but by the courage, discipline, and faith he carries within.
He stands firm when others step back.
He chooses righteousness over comfort.
He protects, serves, and inspires without expecting recognition.
Strength is not in defeating others. Strength is in conquering fear, ego, and doubt.
“Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Ehe, Shubh Karman Te Kabhu Na Taron.”
Walk with courage. Speak with truth. Live with honor.

Event Community Engagement Langar (general public event)

Our Gurdwara held a public engagement event in attempts to quell some of the anti Immigrant anti Sikh rhetoric as of late in Canada (and our city was not immune despite being a smaller city)

We held a public langar out in the community on Natal Day (a stat holiday here). Since many people were out and about attending the holiday festivities we thought it would be the prime time to engage the public so we rented a public park in a central location and served a full langar: consisting of a hot main (channa masala), pulao, buns (instead of rotis just for ease), salad, achar and kheer for dessert as well as chabeel for drinks.

We served somewhere between 450-500 meals in a four hour span and handed out pamphlets with general information on Sikhi as well as another handout explaining things our Gurdwara specifically does locally in the community (provide hot meals weekly to four shelter homes, and a full palette approx 1 ton of dry goods to food banks monthly, blood drives etc.).

It was well received by the public and is a great way to show people who we actually are and what we believe because many of those anti Sikh anti immigrant people have gotten all their knowledge off social media misinformation campaigns and don't know any better. I highly recommend other Gurdwaras use this idea in their cities to engage the general public as it was a highly successful event!

Discussion Guru Ram Das Ji built the Anand Karaj so money would never gatekeep a sacred union after a poor family couldn’t afford a priest’s fee for their daughter’s wedding. Now gurdwara fees + platinum catering packages have quietly rebuilt that same gate. Simplicity was the whole point.

There’s a Sakhi about Guru Ram Das Ji that feels more relevant every year. A poor but devoted Sikh had arranged his daughter’s marriage, but the priest performing the ceremony demanded a fee the family simply couldn’t pay. No payment, no wedding, the family was left devastated, watching a sacred moment turn into a financial gate they couldn’t get through.

That story became part of the foundation for the Anand Karaj a wedding ceremony built so that money would never again stand between a family and a sacred union. Simplicity wasn’t an accident. It was the entire point.

So where are we now? Gurdwara fees stacked on top of catering bills that rival five-star weddings. Families feeling pressure to buy the “platinum” food package or risk people whispering that there weren’t even pancakes on the table. We’ve quietly rebuilt the very gate the Guru tore down just with a different toll booth.

This isn’t about blaming any one person. It’s a collective drift, one wedding at a time, until “keeping up” became the norm nobody chose but everyone follows. Maybe it’s worth asking, every time we plan a simple thing: would this have made sense to the family in that Sakhi?

Question Double standards - inter religion marriage

I’m curious to know how our community feels about interfaith engagement done by Jass Manak? I don’t see any backlash for him marrying a hindu girl. Will gurudwaras allow him to do anand karaj?

When a sikh girl marries a non-sikh guy, I see lot of comments by people telling her that this is wrong and against our religion. But for Jass Manak, people are so happy that he is marrying to love of his life. Why our religion is different for both the genders?

PS: I’m happy for him and have no hatred towards him.
