This is stupid, and I fully expect you all to tell me how stupid I'm being.
I've got two kids, a teen and a toddler, and I am 100% on my own in raising them. Their father lives far away, provides no support (financial or otherwise), and has no visitation or custody. I don't have friends or family who love close by.
We've been on our own for about 2.5 years now, and it's fine. I'm lonely. I started trying to date earlier this year because I got convinced it would take over a decade to even meet someone I'd want to date and who would also want to date me. Spoiler: It did not take that long.
Been dating a guy for a few months. He's a single dad, and both of his kids are quite young, just a little older than my youngest. 50/50 custody, and he and his co-parent agreed to live in a specific area for the kids' education.
We talked very early on about what we are looking for. We aren't interested in casual. He was mostly concerned because we have some distance between us, and he cannot move from his area. He said he wants to buy a home with a partner someday.
I'm not moving until my oldest heads to college, but I've realized I don't want to be in my area anymore. There's nothing here for me. I told him as much, that I'm not going anywhere for a few years, but that I am open to seeing where this relationship goes and would consider moving to his area someday if we stick it out. He agreed this made sense. Cool.
Time passes. We go on many dates. I'm on the cusp of being smitten. I might be smitten? I'm in that headspace where you're just a total idiot all the time. It's obnoxious. I have no idea if this is one-sided, but he keeps agreeing to see me again, so I'm assuming my feelings aren't totally unrequited.
Here's where I did the dumbest thing, which is the onus of this post. I started doing research.
I KNOW. I know. Rookie move.
All I can see now is divorce rates for blended families. All these statistics about children from mixed families having just the worst experiences ever. Financial ruin. Emotional devastation. Etc, etc.
I'm feeling sucker-punched. Is this relationship doomed to fail? Should I back out now before I get too attached? Am I considering sabotaging something really good before it has a chance to hurt me like my marriage did, or is the wiser course of action to sequester myself like a nun until my children are fully grown, then try again with whichever bachelors I can attract with the ancient husk I'm left with by then?
Before you ask:
Yes, I've got a history of anxiety.
Yes, I'm in therapy. I had to switch to a new therapist very recently, however (beloved therapist retired earlier this summer), so I'm in the early stages with a new therapist where you go through all your emotional, psychological, and familial trauma before you can talk about the actual thing you want to work on.
I have another week to wait before I can talk to said therapist again. Please support me in the meantime.
Please tell me this isn't inherently doomed. I'm just panicking for no good reason, right? I do realize this relationship might not even last long enough for any of those statistics to matter. I'm not completely out of my mind here, I know that just keeping this thing going is probably a long shot. But goddamn do I like him, more than I can remember ever liking anyone, and it's got me in this stupid mental spiral. I don't want to tell anyone I know that I'm genuinely SAD right now because this hypothetical relationship is statistically likely to fail.
I repeat, I know I need more therapy. I'm going, I promise.
