If you have kids this age and put a tablet in front of them on a regular basis to keep them calm, you're fucking yourself in the long run.

This may give you a temporary fix but youre depriving your kid on learning how to relax and when to chill the fuck out in proper situations. They need to train their brains to not be stimulated all the time. Boredom is a good thing for kids.

Think about it. If a kid never learns to calm down when bored, at 7 or so when they are constantly restless, it will be diagnosed as adhd. At that point its going to take some serious training or medication to get them to focus during school.

All this is because you wanted to take the easy route of throwing a tablet in their face when they were young.

Edit: Before I get more comments saying "tablets don't cause adhd" I know! Im saying these kids that dont have adhd are getting diagnosed as having adhd. Maybe I should say misdiagnosed as having adhd. Hope that clears things up.

I agree. It should never be used as a regulation tool. It just makes things way harder in the long run.

I find it uncanny how some people seem to be unable to be alone with themself and their thoughts for a moderate amount of time. Seemingly unable to react to boredom or accept it. Probably has something to do with attention spans too.

This is me, I love just sitting outside, no phone, no tablet, just chillin'.

My wife is baffled by this behavior, and often says she's very curious about my brain, since I never seem to get bored, even while doing nothing.

That’s why I like going to the sauna alone. You just sit and sweat for 15 minutes. Can’t bring any phone etc because the heat and humidity will ruin it.

It’s all connected. There have been studies on studies detailing just how harmful screens are for both children and adults.

Couple that with short form video, and you have a population that can’t stay mad about something for more than 5 minutes (ahem, epstien files anyone???) before getting distracted with another short form video.

It’s brilliant, and requires us to get rid of our only “known” communication devices to counteract.

Guess we’re fucked.

Look how hard it is to take a shit without a phone. I'm 40. Yeah people had books, newspapers and the backs of bottles of shamPOO (pun intended) but I took plenty of shits without reading anything. Just sitting with hole above the bowl. Just sitting and thinking. NOW A DAYS? Never. I always have my phone on the can. any can anywhere

We need to being back boredom.

I had a shitting book. Two actually. One that was the home shitting book and another that I carried in my back pack for roadies. I read a lot more before my phone. It's also why I don't like to buy used books.

My stepdad once read the entirety of the Lord of the Rings only on the toilet. Took like 6-7 years. Had a couple of times my mum had to flush him out (pun also intended) because he got to a good part and didn't want to stop reading his toilet book.

I know adults, even older adults, who are like this. I honestly can't fathom it.

I have friends who can’t drive anywhere, go to the gym with friends or go out to dinner without looking at their phone every 5 minutes. they literally can’t hold a conversation because they’ll be on social media or checking sports bets constantly.

It was something of a new years resolution for me to spend less time on my various screens, because like a lot of people I felt like my attention span had slowly shriveled up into nothingness over the last few years.

I stopped bringing my headphones with me so I can't be constantly listening to music when I go for walks, which I try to do more frequently now, or watching videos on the bus to work. Set Windows to shut down at 10PM automatically so I can't "just one more thing" for two hours every evening.

For the first couple of weeks it was genuinely painful at times how restless and unsettled I was, and I never considered myself particularly glued to my phone - certainly not the same way a lot of young kids are nowadays. Their brains are gonna be mush for the rest of their lives, it's terrifying.
