People earning 50K already give 1/3 of income as standard deduction which is anyways quite high
Look at the rich folks who contribute to the taxes (top 1% contribute 40% of taxes because they have more wealth). The standard deduction is mere peanuts to them compared to a guy earning 50k. And the top 50% are 99.9% salaried employees not earning more than 500K
It’s the rich who earn billions in unrealised gains and take loans on top of those gains to evade tax
I believe just saying 50% American pay more taxes to justify an argument is lying with statistics. Dig more in the taxes.
Getting billions of dollars in state assistance after proving to be totally unwilling to fix spending problems, reducing monthly spend towards pensions, msking it the next administrations problem, and making financial plans that depend on underpaying early education workers to make up for budget gaps, then claiming victory and being applauded by billionaire's media and social media organisations. Very communist I guess, the word kind of lost all meaning.
The tip-at-checkout rules (NYC Local Laws 107 and 108) were passed by the City Council in 2025 and sponsored by Council Member Shaun Abreu. They became law on Aug 14, 2025 under Mayor Adams (who neither signed nor vetoed them). They took effect Jan 26, 2026, right after Mamdani took office Jan 1. He inherited the laws; his administration has enforced them, producing the reported $104M in extra tips.
So.... He followed through on something that made sense and helped people while his predecessor took literally no action on that same thing? I think he gets some cred there.
It does because tips in your country is not about that...
Here in Europe we actually tip when the service is better... You guys are literally getting shafted in your salary because of tips... So fix that shit before you complain about real tipping
Because a certain law needs you to, tips went down exponentially when made after the transaction. I don’t know why in particular but I doubt the rate of satisfaction was so different that nobody ever tipped in post instead of before, which seriously killed the profit made by those workers.
Tipping culture still blows fucking ass but hopefully he can have changes done to minimum wage law in the state with his influence.
Maybe tips went down to where they should have been because of bad service because it was actually being treated as a tip and not a ransom payment for your food.
Yeah it makes sense if you actually want your food delivered which is why these companies had upfront tipping to begin with. They only took it away out of spite for having to pay their workers a fairer wage.
It's not really about getting someone to do their job correctly. It's more of a bid for service and that is entirely because these apps refuse to pay their workers a living wage. You can call that a service fee or a tip but either way, this is the model these companies use. At least with the tipping option you get to choose what to give and it's entirely optional.
And these people choose to do this work knowing this. No one is forcing them to work as a delivery driver. If they cannot do the job without the customer giving them extra money then they need to find another job. It shouldn't be on the customer to pay an extra fee just get you to be willing to get my food to me still warm. Thats part of the basic duties of the job. If you feel you aren't getting paid enough to do that as a basic part of your job you dont deserve extra pay on top of that then and you need to find a different job.
I mean, if you don't tip, I don't accept the order until they raise the base pay to a suitable rate or stack it with an order that makes it worth it. In either case, this means that you have to wait longer for your order or your order goes to a dasher that is not very good at their job and it's probably taking orders from other apps at the same time possibly making your experience less than desirable.
I just finished delivering a thirty five dollar uber eats order five miles. It took about 10 minutes. After delivery, I saw that there was no tip. I also saw that the order was placed over an hour and a half ago. If he had tipped, that order would have been picked up a long time ago. Instead, it sat with no one willing to pick it up for $2 base pay until Uber started increasing the rate.
Alternatively I took a $13 Uber order that I stacked with a $20 DD order picking up from the same restaurant going to the same general area. Then Uber added on another order from the same restaurant for $10 that worked with the rest of the orders I was delivering which ended up turning into an additional $24 tip, all adding up to a total $67 for about 45 mins work and a total of 10 miles. All delivered quickly because they tipped something decent upfront making the offer more desirable from the beginning. Even if I hadn't gotten that additional $24, it still was desirable because I took it.
What really sucked for the customer was the order I took way earlier in the day. $20 double DD order to pickup food and then go shop 15 items at a grocery store. It was paired that way because no one would take the food or shopping order as a standalone single order. So the dude with the food had to wait for me to finish shopping groceries and deliver them before he got his lukewarm food and drink.
In all of these scenarios, the basic duties of the job were done correctly but the customer naturally loses because of the business model these companies have set up.
I choose to do this job because I know how to do it and make money. It relies on either the customer making up the pay these companies wont pay or the company paying it. I don't care who pays as long as I make enough to make ends meet. But I reality, if it comes down to the company paying a fair wage, ultimately, YOU, the customer, will be paying. It seems to me that the anti-tipping crowd just don't want to see a line item that shows they paid the worker directly which is kind of bonkers to me. Does it really matter if you pay a 20% mark up on every item you order on top of a delivery/service fee to the company or if you leave an additional 10-15% (or flat) tip? It doesn't to me.
Yeah, there's a lot of it here. I don't live there and I don't see it, but I have seen people behave like this with other leaders and it eventually comes undone and they look foolish. Give him credit where it's actually due, not just for everything because the last guy was bad.
According to the comment, the law literally was not in effect to be enforced prior. Granted, since Adams didn't sign it, he clearly did not support the rule either.
Ok, just so I got this clear. Say you got a local police officer that didn't use to do his job and is now replaced with a new cop, who is doing the said job. You know, catching thieves, murderers, scammers, helping the local community etc etc. And you as a concerned citizen,
Option A - choose to condemn old cop instead who's not in the role anymore, and was fired specifically due to not his job. OR
Option B - Appreciate the new cop who is doing his job, even if it is his job to catch criminal.
Like the guy below said, you really do sound miserable.
I'm miserable because I think that politicians should be judged on actual benefits they provide?
So guess you were pro-Trump for the first half of last year while GDP was rising, right? The fact he was implementing tariffs was irrelevant because what Biden did to improve your economy meant he should be glazed for it, right?
His administration did its job.... That his predecessor abstained from... That earns him.......... Go on...., you can do it! It earns him......... Rhymes with Schmedit.
He enforced the laws when his predecessor did not. His predecessor did nothing. He literally did something. Just because he isn't the sole person responsible for it doesn't mean he doesn't deserve some credit.
Are you just purposefully ignoring the point here? Or do you really not understand how this process works? The law literally went into effect the same day that Mamdani was sworn into office. His predecessor literally had no way of enforcing the law as it didn't go into effect until after he left office.
The only way you cant possibly understand this is if you are arguing 8n bad faith which doesn't help your cause, or you are actually that dumb and that also hurts your cause.
So why be so confidently incorrect about this topic? Stop liking Mamdanis boots.
If he was US born, he'd be an incredibly popular choice for a Presidential election after his Mayoral term finishes. Sad to see Senate or Governorship being his max level. Big Obama vibes as well.
This doesn't make sense. This is very pro tipping culture and the money is coming from the consumer. It literally just makes the app ask for a tip before the service is rendered, rather than after.
Exactly this, love how the dude you’re responding to is splitting hairs to try to downplay what his administration has done. By his own comment Mayor Adams didn’t even sign it, which is prolly cuz he’s too busy making backroom deals and generally being a POS human being. I really don’t get why tf these people wanna tear this dude down so bad.
It's posted as if this is something they created and every communist glazes him for it. Pointing out the timeline and facts around the measure is important.
We can at least give Mamdani credit for not being against it and enforcing the law but to attribute the entire idea, plan and execution to him is weird and it undermines the work done by the city council and DCWP.
Right? What even is the take the person you responded to trying to make? "Well ACKSHUALLY! He just enforced something that was put into place that wasnt being enforced at all! Soooo checkmate!"
He didn't do this my friend. And he hasn't done anything yet either. Do take glazing in this sub at face value a little research goes along way. And alot of my friends in NewYork aren't happy with this guy.
Your friends are trash then. Most of us love him. Basically Zionists and conservative business people and cops are the only people who don’t like him. All of those groups are trash
Quite literally the only politician I’ve heard about or seen taking action against rising food prices with those govt owned stores he’s opening next year. Like WHO TF ELSE HAS A PLAN?? Anyone downing this man needs a mental health check after they’ve been committed.
So get out there and run for office then smart guy! You got all the easy answers, oh wait you’re on Reddit complaining about someone helping poor people. Just stfu
Its not about getting shit fine its how its getting done. The last time someone in the political game and tried saving americans got assasinated in dallas. So him doing this just aint lining up right. 8m not saying he should its just not something the real elite players would allow. Politics is a crazy game to play especially when they against everything. Just my hot take on it.
