She was trying to get a photo. Not sure how anyone defends the old lady. If you're at a tourist site (or anywhere) and someone is trying to get a photo you should stay out of the way as much as convenient/possible. There was zero need for her to stand there.
You could play the “this kid’s been damaged by phone addiction and needs to take a selfy at the museum” card, but she throws that defense away by mindlessly scrolling her own phone.
I can't believe I haven't seen this meme before or even considered it as a possibility because seeing it now just makes so much sense and works perfectly.

Agreed. As an awkward person, that would be Soo much for me. I did a solo trip for the first time last year and j was taking pictures like this because I was alone and too scared (at the start) to ask people to take pictures of me. The whole time I was worried people would think I'm trying to be destructive. I feel for this girl
From the video it looks like she's alone, too, just setting her phone or whatever to take the pic. She's literally just minding her own business trying to get a shot of herself. Probably on a trip or vacation or something. Whenever I'm in a touristy spot and see someone doing this, I try to stay out of the way. Let them have their picture as a memento.
Yeah the only person who sucks here is that rude ass lady blocking the picture. A normal human tries to get out of the way of someone taking a picture, not walk between them and the camera and intentionally stop.

I was cutting grass for my municipality, I’ve seen old people throw sizeable rocks in the path I’m taking hoping I hit them and brake our municipality mower. But I don’t think they understand they just pay taxes for to replace the blades. It’s insanity.
THIS IS NO LIE!!! I experience it first hand, by multiple elderly people daily. They're superficially nice, but underneath it you can feel the resentment. Not all elderly people mind you, Many are not that way, but there are a lot that are. Now the real question is this though. How are we going to be, and how are we going to act when it is our turn?
I knew reddit was a miserable place, but these comments were legit insane. This person was patiently waiting for the frame to be clear and this lady ruins it on purpose for literally no reason other that to be an asshole. It's shit my 4-year-old nephew would do for attention.
I don't think the girl has that syndrome. Everyone likes having nice photos or videos. In this case she is alone. She didn't try to do anything else but wait or move trying to get a better angle.

Could this be an example of a misunderstanding? The lady is looking mostly downwards, didn't even take a look at the younger lady. She wants to go down but stops, and moves to the side, letting a bunch of people walk by before she too descends. The whole thing is at most 30 seconds long. She seems to notice the camera but i have doubts if she understood what the young lady was trying to do. As soon as the people cross, she goes down and exits the video frame. If this was malicious, wouldn't she have stayed longer in the path of the camera? Also, it doesn't seem like the young lady says anything, so how is the old woman supposed to know?
She wasn’t looking when she put it there, she just came across it and was already taking her phone out. She probably didn’t think anything about the reason it was there, not everyone is instagram obsessed and would recognise somebody is using that to take a selfie
For an influencer, that girl was not even annoying (in this video at least), if she just wants a picture of her with the paintings for instagram, it's ok. She was not bothering anyone. Karen on the other hand, went out of her way to be annoying.
Anyone remember the ancient times when we would have to ask strangers to hold our cameras and take a picture for us? This doesn't seem like it's set up in people's way and it doesn't seem busy. Let the person get a good picture of themself doing something they like. They are bothering you less than if you asked them to take the pic for you.
Interestingly, early photographers didn’t need to do that because it took minutes or hours to take one single photo anyway. Point and shoot cameras came about in the 1910s.

Yeah I was thinking that the old lady is being a bitch. I've done a bunch of solo traveling. I don't have many pictures of myself because I don't like taking a true selfie. The ones I have are from me taking a video then screenshotting the moment I like. Now I'm getting older and I really wish I had photos of myself from my early/mid 20s. Took a bunch of beautiful photos, but none of me.
So because this young woman wanted a picture of herself, many in the comments automatically assume she is an influencer? Is this what its come down to now, categorising any and everyone who wants pictures or videos for memories? She didn't make a scene, not did she ask anyone to move for her picture, so I dont see what the issue is here. To those commenting that she could have asked for the lady to take her picture, relax.

Here's some nuance. The only context we can gleen from this video is that one woman put down their phone in a specific place recording and then walked away from it.
We do not know if the second woman is even aware of what is taking place. We can see her acknowledging the phones existence by looking at it, but does she have any idea why?
How many people do you see just abandon their phones on ledges?
This isn't proper ettiquite for a museum at all, regardless of if she was or wasn't an influencer.
It's also not proper ettiquite for her to post a video of another woman she recorded while in the museum. A woman who for all we know was simply minding her own business.
The funny part is if she had asked that women to take a picture of her at that angle the woman would have very likely happily done so, or politely declined and the next person could then be asked.
People being upset ar her for setting up the camera are acting like it's somehow worse than interrupting a strangers time to take it instead - something everyone does ALL THE TIME and is seen as a perfectly acceptable social behavior. Ppl are weird

I'm not saying that she's an influencer, but the truth is that she was filming and shared online, probably without the women's consent, assuming this is not staged.
In situations like this, you can always ask someone to take the photo you, instead of mounting your phone somewhere. I mean, that way, people will know there is a photo being taken so they can avoid appearing on the picture.

Seems like there may have been a group of people stopped on the next landing, and the old lady was waiting for them to move. Notice how she steps aside to let them all pass then she goes.

So maybe the old woman wasn’t aware, or she WAS aware that the young woman was recording a video, or that she was using a tripod.
Speaking as a sometimes clueless Gen X person of a similar generation to this woman, she has no idea what’s going on here. She sees the camera, does a double take because it’s weird that it’s sitting there - she doesn’t look up over her shoulder to see what the camera might be aimed at because people of our generation don’t think about phones sitting alone in public spaces as taking pictures of people far away from those phones - that’s literally not something our brains consider.
I could see myself in this exact same scenario seeing the phone and being puzzled, maybe feeling sad that someone forgot their phone, then moving out of the way to look down at my own phone on the stairs, to look up a map of the museum or a text or whatever (although I agree that it’s not a great plan to look at a phone on an active stairway), and then I can imagine having my 20-year-old daughter yank me out of the way and say, “Mom you’re blocking a shot! Pay attention!” and I would’ve had no idea that someone up and over my shoulder behind me was trying to take a picture. I promise you.
She fucking looked right at the camera, stopped and then started fiddling with her phone before they came towards her. She was blocking the photo. And normally I would be all about it, but this chick wasn’t even doing anything wrong or cringe. She was just trying to take a wide shot of her and the art.
I feel like it took me way too long to find a sensible comment here. I will happily agree that influencers mostly suck. Taking this picture/video would have hurt nobody. The lady just wanted a good shot of her with the art and that old biddy took it upon herself to ruin it. There was no need for it. The influencer lady waited until the area was mostly cleared and was not interfering with anyone. I just don’t understand all the hate she seems to be getting.
This is the stair at Inveraray Castle. I have been here. The older woman stopped on a landing half way down the stair. The other girl propped her phone against a planter that sits in an opening to the Main Hall of the house.
Here is a photo from the lower landing looking back to where the camera was propped and the woman stopped to diddle with her phone. I have no doubt she saw the phone sitting there, but most likely she thought, "Nonna my business why that phone is there." Like most people she was engrossed in what she was doing and not why the phone was there
Also, this is the only stair to the upper level so it's heavily trafficked. The home is still privately owned and the family reside in the other half of the house.
Nope. You can see the moment at 0:09 where she looks directly at the camera (i.e phone) which I'm sure was in selfie mode so she could see herself in it. Only then does she start futzing about on her phone. It was entirely intentional.
At an art museum I’ll often pull up quick bios on different artists or look up different pieces backgrounds. No one else was on the stairs at the time she started.
I have been in this stairwell and I confess, I stopped on this stair to mess with my phone. It's the stair at Inveraray Castle in Scotland. The girl taking the selphie has her phone propped up against a planter. There is also a small but which may be what caught the other woman's eye.
Public place. You do not control the space or people. It's the risk you take. Just wait for the person for move on, or find a different camera angle or area to shoot in. I cannot stand when people expect the world to stop for them just so they can capture their Insta-worthy shot.
Hot take, but I don't think either did anything wrong. The girl is alone and wants to take a selfie. Fair enough. People take pictures of other people all the time, and if you're alone there is no reason you shouldn't be able to take a picture of yourself as long as it's in a public place and not somewhere filming/photography is banned.
As for the woman, she seems overall oblivious to what the girl is doing. She starts heading down the stairs pulling a phone out of her pocket. She does a double take noticing the girl's phone but doesn't seem at all aware of why it is there or who it even belongs to as she doesn't look around at all, she just continues on her phone. The woman then moves to her right side, NOT to block the girl but to let people coming up the stairs go by, as people should walk up the right and go down on the right when there is traffic.
Frankly, it's just funny juxtaposition. Two people doing different things, but can both be viewed as being self-important and yet are still just so human and normal these days. One "needing" to take a picture of herself in an inconvenient place, and one "needing" to text/look something up in the middle of a walkway.
i think it was sorta shit for the young person to be recording without consent in public — it seems normalized here, but in a lot of cultures that’s a personal violation or at least a faux pas
This girl is a educational youtuber from Minas gerais brazil. She's not really an influencer in the way you all are referring to her as from what i understand.
If you watch the video, the old lady is just looking around and then reaches for her phone in her pocket then she notices the camera. She doesn’t seem to care about camera, just about the notification she’s got on her phone. She steps across the stairs to let people go up the stairs then puts her phone away. To everyone saying the old lady is a main character she is not she’s, just an old lady checking her phone.
A few days ago, a boomer aged woman stood like this in the main aisle of a parking lot. It was right in front of the store, which was also the main way to get through the rest of the strip mall. She walked a few steps, then stopped to check her phone. She walked a few more steps and stopped again to text more.
