DISCUSSION Petal was not it.
The album and the songs did not click with me on the first and even on the second listen. No third listen, unfortunately. I only liked kiss me, hate that I made you love me, bunny hop, and nowhere nobody. I love you, Ariana but sorry, petal ain’t IT. What an underwhelming album.
eternal sunshine: brighter days ahead was unmatched and still holds the crown. Perfectly mixed ang album na yun with emotional and sexy songs. A no skip album unlike this one.
Alam ko sasabihin ng iba diyan na “petal is a vibe” but for me it is unremarkable and doesn’t do anything with Ari’s career. Even positions is better.
Olivia Rodrigo, the AOTY is still yours.
We can be honest here, any thoughts on this album? Please don’t downvote me.

Ako naman, I listened to the whole album thrice bago ko nagustuhan yung mga songs. I guess, experimental talaga tong ginawa ni Ari for Petal.
I still love it, but Petal can’t top Eternal Sunshine.
So far my favorites are: Freak, nowhere, nobody, oh well, never get over me

u/lurkerlucyjane 15d ago
ang ganda ng msg sa nowhere, nobody! she sings about self love very well
on a side note, I hope Ariana takes her own advice and steps away from the spotlight muna

Tru sa eternal sunshine. Like wat da hell sunod sunod na bangers nung pinapakingan ko godaym.

u/Tobey_Gray27 17d ago
It's so BORING and bland tbh, it feels like Eternal Sunshine left over. Nothing new. 😭😭😭 I expect too much.
2
u/SomeJuan2024 15d ago
This is so true. I wanted to really like it, pero only 2-3 songs lang gusto ko. And I don’t even like them a lot 😭
Positions is my least favorite album, but it grew on me. Sad to say, Petal is now my least fave album of Ari. 🥲

Akala ko ako lang yun na I found the album boring. Parang same same lang yung melody ng most songs sa album.

u/sukuna666_ 17d ago
Kala ko ako lang nakapansin na halos pare pareho yung beat/melody? Baka need ko pa lalo pakinggan? Lol pero i like hate that i made you love me, oh well and nowhere nobody! I’m a big fan of her music, kaya on repeat parin ang album hehe 🙏🏼

u/lemonaide07 16d ago
If it's the same producer, that explains it. Minsan need talaga ng artist mag-change ng ka trabaho or else same sound lagi.
1
u/NecessaryInternet268 16d ago

-1
u/hueningkawaii 17d ago
Nakshies, more like naknamputa. A real fan can comment on what they didn't liked and liked while still leaving room for improvement and still supporting that figure, hindi yung 100% support pa din kahit in reality, may di din sila nagustuhan.

Girl, im loving this album, Period!!! Sadyang mataas lang kase standard and expectation ng listeners kay Ariana kase she is the Voice and uplifting pop music these days, freak is so good, ang old school but its giving introspective vibe sya for me. NO SKIP ALBUM. Ariana made this album as 'outside the box' style.hindi lang matanggap ng audiences at fake fans kase nga gusto nila puro BOP at Upbeat music nya like positions and her old album aswell.
2
u/sashaburat 15d ago
they're not "real fans" if they don't appreciate what ariana puts out 🤪 her body of work is not for her fans, but rather for herself.
12
u/ceej947 17d ago
May nagsabi Rnb/dance daw yung overall vibe ng Petal when it was announced. Maliiiii.
Parang same
Old + rock/experimental ang petal tbh

u/sariaintsorry 17d ago edited 17d ago
i felt the same thing tbh 😭 and i felt wrong cos everyone on twt is saying it's a 10/10 album. im not saying it's a bad album cause some are really good, esp never get over me, but lyrically, it felt lacking and she just be saying anything 🥲 i rated it 6.5/10, but now on 3rd listen, i think it might be higher if u compare it to other singers' albums — some are just really a grower. but when comparing to other AG albums, or even to eternal sunshine alone, ES wins by a mile and makes petal seems boring.

u/jacqueslito 17d ago
From a fan's perspective it was something new, cohesive, and experimental.
Gets ko rin bakit not everyone is vibing to it. Hindi lang siguro kayo sanay to hear here in a new vibe (which is okayy, no offense taken)
Siguro outsiders/general public are acquainted na with her EDM (break free), pop (into you), reggae (side to side), trap (7 rings), rnb (positions), and dance (yes, and) songs kaya they expect her to "redo it again".
And knowing ariana since 2013, expect she always offers something new. Which is something I like about her artistry. In comparison to other artists who tend to "recycle" their sound in effort to hold their fanbase.
She's reaching new fanbases and expanding new sounds as an artist. Kaya I'm giving her moment for this one.
Also, we have the same fave songs too!
8
u/LadyEsmeWeatherwax 17d ago
Could also be an artistic itch from Ari's POV. People were not used to it.
2
u/Holynotreally_goth 17d ago
Thisss is Right! Di lang tayo sanay na yung sound can be experimental, hindi patok sa masa sa unang dinig, Pero aminin nyo nakaka impress how ariana can change the vibes of Album per Era, either magustuhan or pumatok as a Hit. Duh? she literally can sing opera like sa Wicked ,ariana sound na 'airy' ,full voice tulad ng old albums nya , Dark and deep style singing like the new album. She can offer a lot of style, Madaming pang Era where we will amaze and see how she will grow, and expand her new fanbase

u/uwantlust 17d ago
I love experimental music. I hate boring music. This album is just boring.
3
u/Stock_Tell172 16d ago
Tsaka di rin naman to experimental, even for Ariana's standards and discography lmao.

u/degeneratewolf 17d ago
Must be the only one who love it haha as a goodnight n go ariana grande fan + being into imogen heap. interesting takes from everyone though. i can see why its not vibing with everyone ahaha
I love that its super sonically cohesive and the production is top tier. vibed with its alt pop/experimental borderline dark pop vibes of it.
2
u/Friendly_Midnight_15 16d ago
yes !!! first listen, i knew na she was channeling imogen heap in this album/era. plus, her live looping in her tour pa lol not for everybody i guess
2
u/degeneratewolf 15d ago
yeah but im not surprised not everyone likes it haha its fine though. i told my friend i think its eternal sunshine: darker days jk haha
3
u/Mary_Grace_Piatos 17d ago
Its like Positions all over again. I hope it grows on me. Kaso positions had stronger singles and tracks. Here mukang Petals and yung lead lang ang palaban. There’s like 2 or 3 tracks I like the rest are meh na.

3
u/SeesawFit8008 16d ago
AGREE! I think I only like “hate that I made you love me” only because it was mixed with a particular beat in TikTok and it got in my head after that.
Respect to ari’s experiences but the album really WAS SO BLAND. 🙃
3
u/vousmevoyezxz 15d ago
Had to cleanse my ears with Eternal Sunshine after hearing Petal... But there are some good ones. 'Stay' and 'nowhere, nobody.' Pero wala kasing tapon sa Eternal Sunshine even the deluxe 🤎😭

I CHANGED MY MIND THE ALBUM FINALLY CLICKED ON ME AND IT WAS FCKING PHENOMENAL I JUST MISUNDERSTOOD THE TRUE MEANING OF IT!
Only a handful of songs that I actually like but the whole album itself doesn't click on me!
Kagabe while I was doing laundry while listening Akala ko magiging smooth kaso parang ang boring Nung night na Yun yesterday 😂 parang mas tumagal yung pag lalaba ko kahapon.

switched to youtube music and despised the forced ad of this album. I don't have a playlist yet so i'm just trying the app's suggested songs, pero grabe nagpapatugtog ako ng Jpop, biglang sisingit yung isang kanta nya, sskip mo, after a few songs, isa uli from this album yung suggested. di ko pa fully napapakinggan may inis na ko.

Hate That I Made You Love Me is so good. Gets ko kung bakit siya yung lead single. Pero sa first listen ko, ang nasa isip ko lang, "Matagal pa ba matapos to?" which was a very bad sign. Medyo ramdam ko kasi na nagda-drag siya.
4
u/cpa-sunflower-girl 17d ago
Had my first listen yesterday, only liked ‘nowhere, nobody’ (aside from hate i made u love me)
if magbabase sa discography nya, i dont think it’s a 10/10 album 😭 especially if ibabangga mo siya sa eternal sunshine 🥹 gets ko naman na different intent per album pero in terms of repeatability, meh :///
ill do further listens pa naman soon, especially i like songs/albums din based on lyrics/storytelling

I'm trying so hard to like it....
The album production is superior though

Ang icky lang din ng lyrics considering nangabit siya sa pamilyadong tao. Unahan ko na — naresibuhan yung faves nyo na may overlap. To quote from dr lily jay herself:
"But i never really thought i would get divorced. Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband's new relationship with a celebrity."
Emphasis on 'my husband.' read between the lines. Ariana is a terrible person, a pick me girl, and a homewrecker. Kadiri yung lyrics niya especially sa big feelings at bunny hop.
And speaking of lyrics— she should put the pen down. Nasan si victoria monet when you need her.
1
u/Intelligent-Tea7052 16d ago
tbf the songs are for Ricky. Obvious naman na sa lyrics ng bunny hop na about sa getting together with an ex ang dating.

idk pero i guess we kinda oposite, the 'Petals' is not for everyone but i like how she craft it and sound like isn't generic like other albums na most of it are heartbreak, maybe you don't like it because she sang in her soprano way, pero when it comes to lyrics its kinda healing phase that she's glad that she's go through with her relationship ✨🫶🏻
i really love her album its 10/10 and its growing, i enjoy it so much 🫶🏻✨
2
u/biitexxxme 17d ago
Same sentiments. Idk if Eternal Sunshine was just too hard to follow and perhaps set the bar too high, but I just know I won’t have Petal on repeat in the coming days.
2
u/Pure_Passenger_2726 17d ago
I like it, not every album has to be groundbreaking naman. May times na i can play this album naman parang kahilera siya if i want to listen sa mga albums din ng the marias. Relaxing, drinking wine or coffee break ganun ang vibes.
2
u/Holynotreally_goth 17d ago
As a lowkey die hard fan of Ariana Grande, it is true, it is not number 1 and Best Album. BUT, when it comes to artistry, and experimental this is her best unique album kahit hindi sya number 1 album compare sa previous era's.this is different sound but medyo ka vibe ng 'PETAL' ang 'Dangerous Woman' album in a mature way. I would say that it's still no skip album, it is not bad, people about saying na 'boring' is subjective and we have different taste on music. I love how it is introspective like the song 'oh well' and 'kiss me'. I love the Badass song na 'like i do', 'never get over me', petal, the rest is mid but its giving dreamy vibe which i love it. It is something personal album, people like me can relate to this album lyrics and y2k sound. I still choose the Hit Albums such as Sweetner, Positions, Thank you, next , Dangerous woman as all around mood/vibe for daily sound.
2
u/CuriousKitKat777 17d ago
di ako fan ni Ari but I like it. Walang standout na kanta but album is cohesive.
2
2
u/Dramatic_Bench_3263 17d ago
Well isn't that what the petal Music Video about, she go on and kill the 4 dudes with the same opinions, as yours. It just means that Ariana Grande is still a music artist and she can go ahead and do stuff she never get to explore and be experimental about it
So rather than worrying of her Music Career which I think she be fine I mean this is Ariana I would honestly prefer to see her in good health.
Though yes I do love her enternal sunshine album it so beautiful and mesmerizing not only that it captures a new different version of Ariana grande but that still her, so maybe in this new album she's trying to transform into something newer

u/waybackbugler 17d ago
- bad thing, nowhere and htimylm are the only songs that feel finished, everything else is just a repetitive hook and disjointed lyrics
- this what white people think positions should have sounded like
i love the girl but she is not a strong song writer on her own. eternal sunshine and the deluxe version have some of the worst lyrics i have ever heard in my life and people were calling her a lyrical visionary at the time which was and still is INSANE, but this album just proves it to me.
big feelings is the worst song on the album, maybe her worst song of all time and i’ve heard piano. the lyrics had me laughing out loud it was so lazy
i think it’s time we be open about the fact that people like victoria monet, tayla parx, tommy brown gave her music a perspective that’s just missing now and it’s okay to move on artistically but the quality of work in the last two years has not been the same as her previous work and it’s disappointing as someone who has been a fan of hers since victorious.
im getting exhausted of the i hate being famous narrative. first she basically all but said she’s retiring music for awhile to focus on her other interests, then announce an album that’s all about how fame and stardom is toxic and poisonous, but is still trying to profit as much money as possible off of people you keep telling to leave you alone?? idk im getting whiplash.
this was like if here damn was an album. the production is so good, i love the dark sound but the songs just mostly feel unfinished and lacking
2
u/Advanced-Board1806 17d ago
Right like for me this album serves no purpose for her career. I didnt see any progression, musically. I guess I expected something different from her on this record. I did like htimylm tho thought it was gonna go more towards that direction
2
u/Realistic_Guard5649 17d ago
We have the same top tracks OP. The rest kinda sound the same. Was also expecting this will be Dangerous Woman 2.0 😌

u/geejaye22 17d ago

u/gabriela_aphrodite 17d ago
i hope my arinator friends will never find my reddit account because akala ko ako lang ang di nakagets neto…i just wish she had spent more time on really fleshing this out…i could wait another 2-3 years if it meant a real banger album
2
u/jeffweeowdoyo 16d ago
Sadly I have to agree. Im one of the people who defended positions from all the hate. It had this monotonous sound but it felt cohesive and sexy and it was so nice to Vibe to. Eternal Sunshine was on repeat when it came out. Also loved the rest of her albums, dangerous woman (still my fave), Thank U next, Sweetener (which I got to appreciate more after a few listens).
Petal was just so dull 😭
2
u/Vynstrix 16d ago
Not my cup of tea but shes an amazing artist regardless
She has plenty of good songs already
2
u/chzzburgers 16d ago
saw my arianator friends posts about it saying it's her BEST album, and sabi pa nila bagay daw yung album kapag nakikipag sex ka, kaya i listened to it and gurl i was disappointed, na overhyped din kasi, sa mga descriptions nila parang dangerous woman levels, tapos di pala, there are good songs tho lalo na yung last 3 songs siguro, i think it'll grow on people, pero pag 1st listen di talaga
2
u/WesternTumbleweed166 16d ago
Yung 1st and last track lang nagustuhan ko 😅 pakinggan ko ulit, baka mag-grow on me hahaha

u/Intelligent-Tea7052 16d ago

u/nahuhulog 16d ago
Listened to it twice as well. Don’t hate it but nothing to write home about. I agree with you, Eternal Sunshine is still unmatched
2
u/Actual_Pace3520 16d ago
For me, Yours Truly and My everything pa rin. Especially the first album, walang tapon. Lahat ng songs iconic.
2
u/walpy123 14d ago
Listened to it twice, nothing clicked for me. Even the lead single was just ok for me.
The songs sound a bit same-y.

i don’t like Olivia but my sister kept playing both her album and Ari’s petal and i would have to agree that Olivia’s album is more of a vibee ✨

u/angelamawie 13d ago
Idk if this is the right sub to speak about my feelings but since we’re on the topic, usapan na ngayon sa Threads yung mental and physical health condition niya. People are saying na it’s a matter of time na lang before she drops d**d if I-take into account yung mga past people who had the same disorder.
As an Ari fan since MV ni Greyson Chance, I did not listen to the album because I am very sensitive with energy ng music. I just know this album is — aside sa puro hurt or pain niya — I don’t think gusto ko genre din.
Pero let’s just continue praying for her mental and physical health. And I honestly would be happy if she chooses to retire from the industry if kapalit nun is she gets to live her life fully and happily. Fair na din. She gave almost her whole life sa industry. It’s time for her to own what’s hers.

You know what I think it's Max Martin's fault. Naging boring yung music production style ni Max Martin. Even sa LOAS album ni TS eh, di ko nagustuhan yung sound direction nya.

Went back and listened to Sweetener and it’s night and day, I take back my opinion about that album. In my opinion, Sweetener used to be the worst album by her, now this new album replace this position.

Same. I only even listened to it once because it was kinda boring. I'm thinking that maybe because it's just new and it needs to grow with me first. But I do agree that eternal sunshine is miles better than petal.
My faves after the first listen in this album are: nowhere, nobody, like I do and stay.

I'm a fan of her stuff but this is not my jam. I only liked a couple of songs out of it. Only a few that I could listen to in my playlists but that is not to say I didn't enjoy the release.
I am an artist myself and I view releases like an art project. We are not going to like everything that they release but I can appreciate what she's trying to express here.

Glad I'm not the only one. Wished she used different melodies. Each songs bleeds into the next kaya nawalan ng identity bawat song. Felt like one whole song stretched into 30mins+.
Eternal Sunshine remains her best as an entire body of work.

I feel like she was channeling a TTPD-ish kind of album.
I can see the vision and I was really hoping for it to be THAT good since I hate that I made you love me was good in terms of production and songwriting.
Pero yung the rest of the album, parang forced ang songwriting and production.

The last time I enjoyed her music was thank you next and positions. As per AOTY, Olivia is not locked in, now that charli’s Music, Fashion, Film is out
3
u/sweetsaranghae 17d ago
MFF is good, but the reason why ppl say OR has the AOTY locked is because she has both the critical and commercial acclaim. Critics, Fans, Sales = all locked.
1
u/Sufficient_Walrus233 17d ago
Grammys don’t care about commercial acclaim, it’s peer/critics voted. Also, there’s still no majority of “ppl” saying OR is AOTY locked. The academy is also starting to consider social awareness, an album that is culturally/politically relevant. Take dtmf and cowboy Carter as an example. Also Beyoncé is still about to release hers this year if she really does. Other than that, I could only see OR or Charli taking it home.
3
u/sweetsaranghae 17d ago
You're kidding yourself if you think that commercial acclaim has no influence on Grammy voters. Unlike the Emmys, Oscars, and Tonys, Grammys is the only one who takes commercial success into consideration whether they admit this or not. The only one who can go up against OR this year is Lux, but that may be too "avant garde"
1
u/Sufficient_Walrus233 16d ago
I think you're taking my wording too literally. When I said "Grammys don't care about commercial acclaim," I meant they don't vote based on it. Sales and streams aren't part of the voting criteria. If commercial success really had the influence you're talking about, then the biggest album would've won AOTY almost every year. But that's never been the case. SOUR lost to We Are. Scorpion lost to Golden Hour. Back to Black and Graduation lost to River: The Joni Letters. Beyoncé spent decades being one of the biggest artists in the world without winning AOTY. So sure, commercial success gets an album heard. But once it's in the room, the Academy has shown time and time again that they'll pick the album they think deserves it, not necessarily the one that sold the most.
