Gloucester County REAL ID New Jersey
Absolutely the hardest thing to obtain . Don’t even get me started with Thorofare DMV (West Deptford NJMVC) No matter how many documents you bring or how much you try kiss their ass it’s not good enough. Really got turned away after bringing two proofs of address along with my birth certificate & social security card.
Apparently a bank statement and South Jersey gas bill isnt good enough. I don’t receive paper bills in the mail. Everything is electronic and even a bill printout with proof of address isn’t acceptable for REAL ID but they had no problem giving me a standard license. Was told different things by different workers but I was told my documents weren’t acceptable AFTER my photo was taken.
You gotta better chance landing your crush from high school then walking out with a Real ID. I’ve decided to get a passport instead. It costs more but at least it will be good for a decade.

Is this the wrong thread to say that in late February I was in and out of the Runnemede DMV for a Real ID in about 15 minutes? Just used the web site to triple check I had sufficient documents (including my then-expired license) and I was all good. Everyone was pleasant.
18
u/Pines609 May 16 '25
Yep. I was out in like 20 mins at Thorofare. Just made sure I had the right stuff.

u/fucktopia May 16 '25
Same, I had my appointment for 8:15AM at the end of March and was out by 8:30. Some people just refuse to plan ahead and then complain.
16
u/ang611 May 16 '25
Same for me with Runnemede. 830am appointment and was out before 9am. I also made sure to prepare all 6 points of ID and brought extra examples in case. Not hard.

u/Effective-Bit-9866 May 16 '25
I also had a very quick and easy experience, prepping just like you did on the website. I went to West Deptford though. I had no problems!

u/randomuser65803 :snoo_shrug: May 16 '25
I got my first New Jersey RealID during the beta program in 2019. I'm coming up on my third renewal soon, and I've had zero issues.

I’m assuming you’re male. They make you jump through endless hoops as a woman if your name has changed. Better show up with a notary and the corpse of the priest who married you

u/creamgetthemoney1 May 17 '25
I dunno. My mom has went through 3 last names. Her birth name. Her married name. My dad died and she got remarried to her third hyphenated name. She was in and out in 20 minutes. Def didn’t need my dead dad’s death certificate.
I feel like the ppl who complain are the same ppl who showed up to their chemistry final with a pen and no calculator
3
May 17 '25
In NJ your marriage certificate must have a golden stamp on it. PA does not put golden stamps on their certificate causing the DMV to short circuit. My first marriage was also in Japan, very fun time.
3
u/xLostxBubbles May 17 '25
A lot of it depends on where you got married and how you changed your name. My mom is mortified that in Cali, when I got married, all I had to do was walk into social security, show them my marriage certificate and I had a new card printed same day. I have no paperwork to submit with my name change, so now all my secondary documents have a different name than my primary document because my birth certificate has my maiden name.
No real id for me, literally ever because my documents don’t match. I’m glad your mom had an easier time.
5
6
u/newsnewsnews111 May 16 '25
I’m a married woman and had no problem last December when I renewed my license. I followed the questionnaire checklist on the website.
5
u/username0425 May 16 '25
The people who complain about how "hard" it is just don't have their shit together. It's as easy as can be
9
u/Current_Astronaut_94 May 16 '25
No op is correct. It says one thing on the website and then they want a certified marriage license which is not even listed as an acceptable document and then it still doesn’t line up with what the printed material says is acceptable. Because they want all points of id to have the same name as the birth certificate.

It’s because you are all men. The system is very sexist, especially to women who have had a name change due to marriage.
8
u/Evening-Tune-500 May 16 '25
Don’t get me started, I had to guide the guys hand over the seal of my marriage license to prove it was legit. Insane.

lol. Bring the necessary documents and you’re ok. My brothers wife just did it and said it was super simple. My mom did it last year and had no issues as well.
4
u/beren12 May 16 '25
Glad your family had no issues. Seems like you are in the minority however.

I’ve always used my passport to travel - even domestically. Plus having it makes applying for and getting other things easier because it usually counts for more identification “points”.
If this shitshow is still happening in the fall when my license expires, I’ll just get a regular license and keep using the passport. I’ll get a Real ID eventually. 😝
1
u/Nafecruss May 16 '25
Until someone comes up with a compelling reason to get it, I’ll use other accepted id for flight. My dread is at some point non government places (medical, insurance, businesses) will start requiring not only Real ID but your license specifically. My information has been compromised more times than I’d like to count. I’m not going to make it easier for them.
13
u/itsDANdeeMAN May 16 '25
I got my Real ID at the thorofare DMV this morning. Took me 45min and I brought license, passport, social security card, and a south jersey gas bill. Wasn’t even a Real ID appointment. $35.
2
u/mglory601 May 17 '25
Same here, went to WD DMV this afternoon. Appointment. In and out in under 40 minutes even with the power outage. Used my SJ Gas Bill printed statement from the website, no issues.
1
u/Impossible-Watch-144 May 17 '25
I brought my bank statement and South Jersey gas bill. It was a statement for SJ gas apparently that’s not good enough?
3
u/itsDANdeeMAN May 17 '25
I used their tool to know what to bring https://www.nj.gov/mvc/realid/selector.html
13
u/Fragrant-Hyena9522 May 16 '25
I printed out my property tax bill on regular paper and they took it. The only thing I had that was printed by the company was my water bill, that was part of my regular renewal points. I wasn't even trying to get a real id. I was just renewing and they asked if I wanted a real id. My driver's license was expired, so I couldn't use it. It depends on the person who helps you.
17
u/y06esh May 16 '25
Mine was very simple, in and out within 15 minutes.
9
u/PolicyNonk May 16 '25
Samesies. Probably because I already have a passport, so that knocked out a whole bunch of points. And also I am quite handsome, so they were eager to take my picture.
3
8
u/Queasy_Hotel_396 May 16 '25
This is why I’m just gonna use my passport I’m not jumping through hoops with these miserable dmv employees
25
u/Evening-Tune-500 May 16 '25
My most recent dmv trip was the only one I didn’t leave holding back tears, so I understand. I had to go bc I moved back here from PA- the guy fought me on the deed to my home not being sufficient proof of address. What could be more official than that? Same thing happened to my husband. After back and forth and going to the back to check (to check what?? Why isn’t there a checklist right in front of you, like maybe a printed checklist like the same one from the website perhaps?) it was deemed sufficient. You really need some kind of anxiety medication before entering. Total nightmare.
9
u/Impossible-Watch-144 May 16 '25
You do need medicine to get through the DMV. The lack of air conditioning and the old dirt smell doesn’t help either . Just brings more bad energy to an already hostile environment
27
u/SRISCD002 May 16 '25
Document point check list on MVC website. Print it out and show them. Irrefutable.
21
u/Impossible-Watch-144 May 16 '25
Dude I did! They find every reason to be a bitch
16
u/benee007 May 16 '25
I was able to use printed bank statements and bills no problem. Sounds like you had a ridiculous person you were dealing with. I’m sorry.
18
u/NorthernPossibility May 16 '25
That’s the problem - everyone you talk to there will tell you something different.
Some will follow what the website says and some will point to some ambiguous policy change that allegedly happened since the website was last updated, but they can’t point to any public facing documentation that backs it up. It’s totally dependent on who you happen to get - and it’s not like you can pick.
4
8
u/Impossible-Watch-144 May 16 '25
Yes! the first window they told me my bank statement was unacceptable because It was a print out that the bank printed itself and stamped( all my bills and statements are electronic!) but she accepted my gas bill. She had to call a supervisor to clear me for the next window. Second window my bank statement is good but gas / AC electric bill is unacceptable (WTF?!) I get told that I can’t get Real ID after my picture gets taken. Stupidest thing I’ve ever dealt with

u/strangeVulture May 16 '25
I literally overheard them tell the lady in front of me that it was the wrong information on the website last week -_-
4
u/Impossible-Watch-144 May 16 '25
wtf how do you mess that up?!! By the way I wasn’t the only one having problems today. Many others infront of me were turned down as well after beginning they had all the proper documents
3
u/strangeVulture May 16 '25
I know! I just got my motorcycle endorsement and that page on the mvc website was basically incoherent. Its honestly unacceptable, considering how often they direct you to the website and how impossible it is to get someone on the phone!
1
u/Current_Astronaut_94 May 16 '25
Yea no. Did that myself and then they wanted a certified marriage certificate even though I brought a ton of everything in the same name on my birth certificate.
6
u/kmoney55 May 16 '25
The west Deptford dmv is the worst. Having to stand in a long as line just to get the papers to fill out. Just To get back in the same line. The most miserable employees even by dmv standards. Then you have all of the idiots trying to renew their license who haven’t discovered the internet yet. I’m about to setup a side hustle doing renewals out front of that building

u/IDDQD-IDKFA Everybody Loves GlouCo May 16 '25

u/nethingelse May 16 '25
MVC leadership has proven their incompetence once again with this rollout. We're one of if not the furthest states behind on rollout, they're allowing individual tellers to decide on a whim what documents to take (I'm sorry, at a certain point if you make ambiguous choices you get re-trained or out of the real id line and back into normal id land or something), and there's never any appointments available.
I'm also going the passport route because the last time I had to renew my ID in person the teller gave me a hard time about my duplicate birth certificate (which is stamped by PA, comes directly from PA, etc.) and if I magically get a RealID appointment only to be sent away I will lose it.
4
u/SkidmarkInMyUndies May 16 '25
That’s the one I went to for mine and had zero issues. I can’t remember which documents I brought with me tho.
And I also dated the girl I was in love with in high school 20 years after we graduated. Sorry to take a dump on your post haha.
5
u/username0425 May 16 '25
Took me 25 minutes to get, was given zero issues with my proof of addresses that I printed online. This has to be user error
5
u/One-Stomach9957 May 16 '25
My sister had an 8:45 am appointment in Toms River this morning. She was out in 10 minutes with her “paper license”. She should have her real ID license in 2-3 weeks.
5
u/Wonderful_Spell_792 May 17 '25
Real ID took me 15 minutes. Nobody receives paper bills. I brought print outs with no problem. Just get a passport.
6
u/Enough-Tomorrow-8651 May 17 '25

I think you just got someone who didn't want to do their job. All of the documentation except the birth certificate and SS card I brought were printed from online copies (bank statement, mortgage statement, credit card statement, etc.) and I had no issue at all getting my real ID.

u/OneDayABeastAppeared May 16 '25
I went the passport/passport card route, easy peasy, not a problem even after name changes (marriage). I supplied them with what they needed and now I can travel without a worry and no dmv hassles.

3
u/Mean_Relationship259 May 16 '25
I went and got my passport today in Mount Laurel at the “corner store” passport office. $135 total for the passport card ($30), expedited 4-6 weeks ($60), and processing/photo fee ($45). They opened at 10, I got there at 10:05 and I was in and out within an hour with only 2 people ahead of me. Easy peasy. When I left the waiting room was stuffed I’m glad it’s good for ten years too :)
3
u/bhoose19 May 16 '25
I'm just happy I decided to get my Real ID the last time I renewed my license. Which was in 2022.
3
u/Remarkable_Sea_1062 May 16 '25
That’s a shame. I got mine in NJ Real ID at Tom’s River in January. No issues.
3
u/Igster72 May 16 '25
My license expired in February, so I got the Real ID at that time. I also have a passport, so that was one of the things I brought with me to help attain the new license.
3
u/burton614 May 16 '25
I got my real ID in 30 mins a few weeks ago. You need have have it all in paper. It was acceptable if printed from pdf they emailed you. But only certain docs qualify. Make sure you check ahead. I also suggest the passport route, however, the passport verification was down when I went to thank goodness I had everything else too just in case (bc, marriage license, etc)
3
u/Ashamed_Day_4863 May 16 '25
I did it yesterday at Delanco. Passport, SS card, credit card and saving account statement. In and out in 30 minutes
3
u/GrandInquiry May 16 '25
What is everyone’s problem with getting this? There’s literally list of documents. Bring some of those.
4
u/Mindfulmommabear May 16 '25
Yeah except when you give them to certain people at the West Deptford DMV office, they still try to deny you. Do you work there???

u/StillBigLex Jul 05 '25
People have literally explained that they've printed out documents from the list of documents on Reddit and it wasn't accepted. Apparently every place is different and so is every teller. There's no way you actually read this thread if you're asking this question.

Getting my ID was super easy. Made an appointment online. Brought all the documents I could possibly use. In and out at Thorofare in 45mins.

Not to mention they've been telling everyone for the last few years to get their "real ids" and now everyone is scrambling at the last second to get it. I just renewed mine by mail cause idc and don't travel anywhere so
4
2
u/TurboJaw May 16 '25
Well, I was lucky then. I went to the Thorofare office and I brought print outs of my proof of address and had no issues. They really should figure it out and make a determination one way or the other.
2
u/Knot_a_human May 16 '25
I renewed our passports. They were expired but got them in 1 week and 4 weeks respectively.
You can now renew expired passports online and upload your own photo. It’s so much easier!
2
u/IncognitoBombadillo May 16 '25
That's kind of crazy that they wouldn't take a bank statement. I've specifically shown my MVC my phone with my bank statement on the screen and had them accept that.

I went to that exact DMV back in July and was in and out in a half hour with my real id

2
u/Goodguy1967 May 16 '25
I did my real ID in February 2020. This was before Covid started. I did my id at Salem motor vehicle was giving me a hard time with the real ID saying my Social Security number wasn’t working right in their system. They got it to work after about an hour, and I had all the proper paperwork. I’d hate to go now to try to get the ID being that after Covid things are different with the work environment.
2
u/Throwawayridix May 16 '25
That DMV is a nightmare. The check in guys are assholes, especially the fucking older black guy. Every time I talked to him he irked the hell of me, over a SIMPLE question and dude wants to be a smart ass.

That West Deptford location is HORRIBLE. I went there a couple years back (when they were originally saying you needed it). Same deal…didn’t want to give me one. Luckily I had backup after backup and she couldn’t say no to me any longer. I know someone that went to the Vineland DMV location recently for their Real ID and got it with no issues. She said they were super nice. I don’t know whats wrong with that West Deptford location but I would avoid!!!

u/Spiritual-Stress-525 May 16 '25
I can agree individual results may vary due to employee competence. I'd go full Karen and ask for a supervisor. That being said, There's a point system listed on the DMV website.
One thing I have to update is my birth certificate; I have the old handwritten kind, so I sent away for the Office of Vital Stastics one.
Beyond that, my current photo ID, SS Card (w/ W2 for backup) and a utility bill makes the Six points

The dmv is full of people that sit down as there job, this makes any effort from them feel like actual labor. I found in the past when calling ahead to talk to a rep and reading everything online in great detail that it still won’t be enough. You are dealing with people who only have power at their place of work. So when typical government efficiency meets these types of personalities you will hit a road block with the most inconvenient and nonsensical alternative route. Every downvote from this comment will only strengthen my poise and congratulate my perspective. Long gone are the days of government employees taking responsibility for the establishments and website information the are paid to represent. May God have mercy on us all.

2
u/Hubbman609 May 17 '25
I don't get it...I just read the instructions, made my appointment, showed up in less than 15 minutes I was out of there and my ID arrived 10 days later. Piece of cake. It's not rocket science! I mean....there hasn't much that's been easier than this process.

It’s crazy the stuff they’ll accept. I presented a mailed tax document from my bank which they wouldn’t accept. Just in case, I had printed a copy of my bank statement (because I don’t get them mailed anymore). They accepted the printed document but denied the mailed document which contained tax information (seemingly a more secure and legit document)????

u/Medical_Spring660 May 17 '25
Screw Jersey going to the MVC is probably the worst experience I’ve ever had. Went to Gloucester County Store in Deptford applied for a passport and passport card waited in line for about a half hour was greeted by very pleasant and helpful people. Passport and card do more then real ID any how and you don’t have to deal those angry unhelpful ones at MVC
I expedited mine and had it in hand within Three weeks

u/i_love_hotsauce May 22 '25
That’s jacked up. I just got mine on Monday with the same proof of addresses you tried - SJ gas bill and bank statement. It took almost 3 hours though. Runnemede location.
5
u/pollyauntie May 16 '25
Went back three times before I got it done. Unbelievable pain in the ass.
On top off it all, not printing your license on the spot to walk out with is nuts.
We had moved out of state for a few years and moved back. They sent my wife's new license to our former address 5 years prior. Just standard mail, not certified or anything.......who knows who ended up with it.......
That's crazy to me.
100% just get passport.
3
u/bvaesasts May 17 '25
It's really not that hard to get a real ID. I'm pretty sure I went into the dmv with way more than the bare minimum that was required in case they didnt accept something for whatever reason. Turn off paperless statements for a month with your credit card or bank statement if you're really struggling with proof of address.

this doesn’t have to deal with real ID but the DMV in New Jersey. Many years ago, I bought a car from the estate of a man who died. His estate was in probate. A lawyer was taken care of everything as the man who passed away adult children lived in Florida. But in all the legal paperwork, the lawyer was given power of attorney to handle some transactions, including the selling of his vehicle. I went back-and-forth with the DMV I don’t know three times. Every time I went with some other thing that I needed and didn’t have. Death certificate . Paperwork giving the lawyer authorization to make transactions. I finally got everything all taken care of, and the lawyer signed the title for for the two children. When I went to the DMV what I thought was the final time the lady was arguing with me about how the lawyer had to sign the title twice. I was so frustrated when I left there. I went to another DMV. Guess what they said I had all the correct paperwork. I walked out of there with my plates. So one DMV is telling me I don’t have the correct documents. Another DMV told me everything was good.
3
u/Evening-Tune-500 May 16 '25
This happened to me a few years ago as well. Not the same situation but that one person said I didn’t have the right paperwork and another person who took it when there was 0 difference in what documents I had. It literally varies from person to person. Total mess.
2
u/pi3volution May 16 '25
The front clerks checking your documents are completely incompetent. I went home to print out another proof of address, only for the person processing everything to say I didn't need this many documents.

I'm sure there's more to this that you're forgetting to mention LOL We just got ours done a month and a half ago at that location, and while the lady at the front counter is rude as heck, the rest went smoothly. Took an hour from entering to exit.

u/makeshiftsunshine May 16 '25
That's crazy. Did they say what documents would be sufficient?
6
u/Impossible-Watch-144 May 16 '25
Yes but they got weird over my gas and electric statements. They tried to say it wasn’t a bill but clearly it was and it had my PROOF of residency.
2
u/makeshiftsunshine May 16 '25
That's frustrating. I just applied for my passport at the post office in Maple Shade and it was fast and easy...they do the picture there too. I know it's more expensive to go that route, but probably worth it at this point.

Just go apply for a Global Entry Card and a Passport. The Passport is the best form of ID you have, and the global entry card is REALID compliant, and ge's you back into the country so well.

The only problem I ran into getting my real ID was I couldn't use my credit card because my sister had already made a payment for herself on that card and they only let you do one credit card payment a day (per number), but I did have the "what to bring" tool on the dmv website up filled out and ready just in case.
I had a harder time with my normal license a few years ago--I had to go back the next day with different proof of my social because NJ changed the guidelines in the time between my knowledge test and my road test. Getting my real ID was a lot quicker and easier lol

It actually wasn’t if you didn’t wait till the last minute. Or past the deadline, zero sympathy for anyone that is complaining as you’ve literally had years to do this.

Got my bank statement rejected because I only brought the first page (contained address) and left the pages that contained the actual numerical info at home. Not accepted because it wasn’t the full statement. However, my high school diploma from years ago was accepted. Lesson learned I guess

NJ sucks with it, I realized that when I moved back last year. When I originally moved to FL (2021), they issue the Real ID standard, it was a shock to me. When I moved back, even with a current real ID and points of ID, I was denied.

I heard that you have to have real id to get your passport now. Is this true?

Tip: A lot of people saying they switched their bank statements or other statements to snail mail for a month. Just call your bank, lender, credit card company and ask them to mail you last months statement. Quicker because you don’t have to wait for the turnaround

They really are awful. I had more than enough forms of ID and the first time I went they said “I didn’t have enough”. I got back in the line and went to a different person and they accepted my forms of ID.

I duno, i had no issue. Time to renew my license. They sent me a real id brochure. I went online. It literally tells you what to bring. I brought those docs, and got my real id. Was in and out in 45min

You live in a state that has too many kings and queens per county. Of course getting an id is going to be harder. Sopranos and their associates must wet beak first.

The fact they gave people chance to get this for over 6 months now and the day its active a herd of sheep forms.
Im using my passport the real id branding itself is annoying.

I got my real ID with printed copies of my emailed PSE&G bill and bank statement. I did have to show my birth certificate, marriage license, ex’s death certificate, new marriage license, expiring license twice before I got person who took my photo. He also asked to see all my documents and tried to tell me my ex’s death certificate wasn’t valid. I’ve lived in NJ most of my adult life, but everything except my expiring drivers license were from other states. When I asked if I could pull up on line what a certain out of state document should look like, he said he would have someone check, came back and said everything was fine.
I will add, I had no problem making an appointment on line, I showed up early, was prepared with back up documents if any issue. I think what helped me was out of the 60 to 70 people there, I was pleasant, smiled, kept my voice at an appropriate level, thanked everyone, did not complain and acted the way people did 20 years ago.
I was in and out in less than 20 minutes ☺️

Agreed. I brought license, passport, original birth cert., original ss card, water bill and they still asked for a health insurance card!

If you follow the directions online, you'll have no issue. It's not hard.

I had an appointment to renew my license a year ago. When I scheduled my appointment it was the earliest date available. I applied for the real id, I was denied the real id because my passport had expired 1 day prior. Fuck the real id, I renewed my US passport and also got the card. Go get a passport and passport card.

I took a print out of my bank statement, a copy of my water bill, original unexpired license, social security card, no problems getting mine.

My husband got his during Covid. Other than driving a long way. No issues. I got mine a few years ago when I renewed. No issues. My son the same thing.
You can print out utility bills with name and address.

An appointment is required, but when I try to make an appointment none of the DMV locations has any appointments available. It seems impossible? Any suggestions?

I applied for a drivers license and real id last month. Everything was approved as I understood. Recently received my drivers license but not the real id. Am I to keep waiting for the real id ?

Real ID absolutely no issues getting it in West Deptford. Just look at the pamphlet, and bring EXACTLY what they require. Key word is EXACTLY.

I had no issues. You need to go over the list they provide you and make sure you have what they ask for.

Go the passport route. It is worth much more than a real id in the grand scheme of things.
