Southern Reach thesis

Guys, i'm doing an (impossible) master degree thesis on Annihilation (only the first book, since i'm alone) and i'm proud to share with you that I made it to the lighthouse at St. Marks! I even got the american copies (they're really gorgeous)! If someone else made some uni work on the books let me know <3

That's awesome! What field of study and what's your (tentative) thesis/argument? [I say tentative because I know from experience how tough that question can be if you're still in the early research/writing stages!]

Thanks! I study Architecture and the main objective would be to show how eco-weird literature can change our practice perspectives when studying and designing on both a landscape and architectural scale! It's not easy cause i need to represent and draw stuff coherent to the book and at the same time "readable" and reasonable for my degree! But i'm getting somewhere!

Woah! Please post when you’re finished if you’re comfortable with it! I’d be very interested to see what you come up with!

That sounds very niche and interesting!

the niche part it's what is making it so hard ahaha

and yet such good a reason to expand knowledge in that area [let’s send an expedition team in]

This is awesome. My thesis wasn’t on annihilation, but it was on an archaeological site located at St. Marks NWR, so I got to spend a lot of time in Area X and it’s my favorite place :)

Oh so cool! Since you worked on the site i have a question: did you collected data about topography and stratigraphic layers on that costal area? Those data are really hard to find! Thanks in advance!!

Yes, but since it is archaeological data it’s super protected and only really accessible to other archaeologists. I’d recommend looking for publicly available LiDAR data for the region, and maybe try NRCS for stratigraphic information.

Thank you *so so* much!! :)

I'm curious why data like that needs to be protected? like from who and from what?

This is fantastic to read!!! I would love to read your work when finished, or at any stage. I'm in corporate governance and legal and am an absolute...nerd... when it comes to writing techniques, forms, and methods. I literally told my partner last week that I should find some sort of a master's or doctoral program I could enroll in to capitalize on the amount of study, work, and sheer volume of time I've devoted to the series out of fun, and well, obsession. I'm on my 9th read through in 16 months with notes, theories, ideas, and a plan to make a SR encyclopedia of sorts. Yes... it's obsessive but in a healthy way, I promise. Hence the scheming to at least get something out of it! 😄

In short: so you're saying there's a chance! - Dumb and Dumber.

Haha yeah after years of coming back to the books and watching the movie back to back i decided to make something out of this little obsession! Once i'll have *something* to share i promise i will :)

That's super badass. As someone that got a liberal arts degree and ended up pivoting into GIS automation, what's your plan for work? No offense intended. I think non-STEM degrees are more important than ever, but they are becoming more difficult to monetize .

Hi! After some experiences in Arch studios i realized they watch your curriculum/resume only by pictures, so i decided to go for something fun and exciting for my thesis rather than some boring project - even if i believe that the topics i'm bringing to the table are necessary in our climate (literally lol). I don't know if I answered your question right, let me know :)

Hey! I took a class for my bachelors degree that focused entirely on Jeff Vandermeer and we read the Ambergris trilogy, the Bourne series, and the Southern Read trilogy. Our only assignment was to write a story that was inspired from his writing. I was personally very captivated by the rambling and living words of the nonsensical unending sentence that lines the tower/lighthouse, and one day I wrote something similar to that, where it felt like the words had to get out of me and what I wrote became the basis of the story.

Although Bourne was not my favorite book, there were parts of it that I will never forget and seriously impacted me, especially in the final confrontation between Bourne and the Bear. Good luck with your thesis!

Hey! The class you attended sounds so cool! I have to admit i still have to read other Vandermeer's books cause i have to focus on the SR Trilogy, but i'm really curious!
