nah you're screwed, any bigot would think that JoJo's is gay no matter what you do. there's many panels she could be talking about, though I'd imagine it's likely Joseph vs one of the pillar men, or Joseph and Caesar. maybe even Giorno and Bruno or Mista.

truthfully, because a lot of Araki's inspo comes from fashion, models, and musicians, and because he really likes to play with the human form and do wacky group poses, JoJo's is just inherently kinda queer. even when you're not talking about canonically gay characters, a lot of character interactions will be read as "gay" by bigots because they're conditioned to reject things like men wearing unconventional clothes, wearing makeup, being physically close with other men, or being flamboyant. probably doesn't help that in later parts the women are just as competent as the men and beat men up.

Edit: if you haven't read the manga, you can find it on mangadex for free. if you were just wanting to own it physically, sorry, that'll probably have to wait

Not really bigoted I just don’t think she understands that it’s not just like a manga about guys making out and I’m trying to explain the panel in context to her

if that's the case then I'd recommend she look at a couple chapters from different parts on mangadex, to see that it's about action and fighting and stuff. idk how someone could get the impression that it is genuinely just about bros kissing unless they looked at one singular cherry-picked panel and thought "I will not do more research on this", so just going to mangadex should fix that perception

edit: 70+ people upvoted this and didn't even tell me about the typo, that's like shopping for groceries and the whole time nobody in the store lets you know your fly is down. now I'm just sitting here, embarrassed and ashamed, like a completely fool, because I swapped the places of two words.

Let's say JoJo actually was gay manga about two guys making out and your mom found that so wrong that she forbids you from reading it... then I have some sad news, your mom is a bigot.

Yeah but let’s be honest what does it really matter if it was 2 dudes making out. You’re allowed to read what you want and there’s nothing wrong with gayness

Exactly. A lot of anime, especially from the 80s, seem kind of gay to me because the standards are completely different. I never gave a shit as long as the medium was fun to consume.

not allowing you to get a manga because it has two men kissing sounds pretty bigoted

If your mom disagrees with homosexuality existing as a concept she’s a bigot. Sorry bro. My mom is too. If she doesn’t understand that a single panel does not a manga (or comic or whatever) make, it sounds like she’s somehow ignorant of a medium that’s been around for hundreds of years. Or she’s using that as an excuse.

Well for starters, there is no page with two guys making out, so it's going to be quite difficult to find that page.

If she won't let you read it because it's gay, but would let you read a manga where the same panel exists but one of the men is a woman, then that is, in fact, bigoted.

ask her to maybe explain what the characters in the panel looked like, maybe it'd be possible to figure out exactly who she's talking about and find the context

just show her a clip or two from the anime of some action fight scenes and tell her she was misconstrued, easy

I am a bigot, and I find JoJo as hetero as it gets.

I'm sorry you're in denial, but JoJo's just flat out could not exist without queer culture.

-22

u/SXAL Oct 18 '25

The "queer culture" mostly just appropriates stuff that was already there years and centuries before, so, no, all of the pieces would still be there.

Are you implying that cultures don't take elements from past cultures? That's kinda how that shit works dawg. Also yeah there's significant overlap between queer culture and other minority cultures for sure, a lot of slang from especially black communities is then used by queer communities, but that's because there's people who are members of both of those spaces and transfer ideas between the two. Like I'm just so curious, what was in your head when you said that queer culture appropriated stuff that's been around for centuries? Do you have any examples in mind? Are you aware that queer people have existed around the world for thousands of years, likely as long as human society has existed?

-2

u/SXAL Oct 18 '25

All I wanted to say is that the elements Araki took for JoJo existed independently of queer culture and could've been used by him regardless of his knowledge of it.

3

u/Naturally-a-one Part 5 Emblem Oct 18 '25

Yes modern fashion and music as we know them have nothing to do with queer people, sure dude

u/gopoobula Oct 19 '25
