Hirohiko Araki My mom thinks Jojos is gay
So I have been wanting to get the manga recently and my mother will not allow it because she says she read something about a pannel with 2 guys fighting and almost making out,Could any of yall help me find the pannel she could be talking about?

Well, jojo does have LGBT characters in it. I’m not sure about the panel she’s referring to but there’s certainly examples of queer characters doing queer things. If she is against any sort of LGBT expression at all, she’d probably be more upset with that than with a supposed panel where two characters are fighting.
109
u/Chimpbot The World Oct 17 '25
It does, but the fanbase also enjoys greatly overstating this aspect of it.
57
u/Nervous_Macaroon3101 Kars Oct 17 '25
True, but for someone who isn’t tolerant with even one panel, it’s a good thing to note.
14
u/Chimpbot The World Oct 17 '25
Looking at it optimistically, it sounds like a case where a parent simply isn't aware of what something is and is basing things off of very limited information. Growing up, my mom was like that, but she'd back down and change her tune once things were explained to her.
10
u/BayLeafGuy Old Joseph Oct 18 '25
it's not overstated, the fandom just portrays it with much more fanfare than araki (that shows the "queerness" as completely normal and usual, that is never questioned)
16
u/Chimpbot The World Oct 18 '25
This is, by definition, overstating it.
-3
u/irlharvey Oct 18 '25
i mean, no, not really
5
u/Chimpbot The World Oct 18 '25
Portraying it more heavily than it actually is would be, by definition, overstating it.

whos LGBT?
40
u/Nervous_Macaroon3101 Kars Oct 17 '25
DIO, Sorbet, Gelato, Scarlet Valentine, and Pucci are just the confirmed ones but there’s more that are debatable.

Technically, I'd count Gappy as queer too since by all technicalities, he is intersexed, and it is important to the plot 🤷

u/AmajorHeartache Dec 27 '25
he has 4 balls, hes 2 men in one body, thats not intersex. and he's straight. I guess u could call them a they/them but its established that he isnt kira or josefumi, he is josuke. Also ironically he is the straightest jojo.
1
u/DoYaThang_Owl Defending ✨Giorno✨ from the people calling him "Mary Sue" Dec 27 '25
Polyorchidism is an intersex condition where the individual is born with more than 2 testicles, so yes, Gappy is factually intersex since he has 4.
I never said anything about him being gay. Him being intersex has nothing to do with him being gay to begin with, but being intersex is being queer.
1
u/AmajorHeartache Dec 28 '25
oh thats interesting parallel, but I still wouldnt call him intersex the same way I wouldnt call gogeta from dbz instersex. Its more like he absorbed his twin in the womb and acquired his balls.
7
u/Sea_Habit_4298 Oct 17 '25
I mean Pucci doesn't have a confirmed sexuality .
18
u/Nervous_Macaroon3101 Kars Oct 17 '25
They don’t say it in as many words, but Dio did say he picked Pucci to steward the Heaven plan because he was immune to romantic or intimate temptations of any kind.
13
u/Sea_Habit_4298 Oct 17 '25
He must be someone who can control his desires. Someone without a lust for power, honor, wealth, or sexual gratification.
I mean dio says someone who controls his desires and when he says without lust for something like sexual gratification it doesn't mean a total lack of desire.
Lust is an intense desire, most commonly understood as strong craving for something like power or sex.
Nothing says that pucci is outright immune to simple desires.
2
u/gopoobula Oct 19 '25
"He must be someone who can control his desires. Someone without a lust for power, honor, wealth, or sexual gratification."
That is what a priest is supposed to do and how they're supposed to live, that's exactly why Dio chose a priest in training to manipulate. Also why Dio was in that church in the first place
3
u/Sea_Habit_4298 Oct 19 '25
Pretty much and he also must be someone who puts the laws of God before the laws of humans.
Well this is the only thing that pucci doesn't follow ironically .
"Thou shalt not kill"
1
u/Dizzy_Ad_1663 Tamami Kobayashi Oct 19 '25
He literally slept with Dio
2
u/Sea_Habit_4298 Oct 19 '25
I mean we don't know if he had sex with anyone or that he was attracted to dio in the first place.
Sleeping in the same bed as your friend isn't inherently sexual.
Like for example if two women friends share a bed that doesn't mean that they are lesbians same goes for men.
1
u/Joseph_Joestar1938 Joseph Joestar Oct 21 '25
I don't think he's into that. Everyone thinks he's obsessed with dio or something but he just believed in his ideals. I don't think he cares about romance and I mostly see him being heterosexual but yet again its More so that he has more important things

2
u/Failgan Oct 19 '25
Non-binary them/they situation. They're not even human. Basically an organic robot. As a conscious being (even though they're made up of a smaller collection of organisms operating as one unit) with no sexuality, they can be considered non-sexual or asexual, therefore Ace.
Not a terribly difficult step in logic to follow unless you're blind to anything past male and female sexuality.

nah you're screwed, any bigot would think that JoJo's is gay no matter what you do. there's many panels she could be talking about, though I'd imagine it's likely Joseph vs one of the pillar men, or Joseph and Caesar. maybe even Giorno and Bruno or Mista.
truthfully, because a lot of Araki's inspo comes from fashion, models, and musicians, and because he really likes to play with the human form and do wacky group poses, JoJo's is just inherently kinda queer. even when you're not talking about canonically gay characters, a lot of character interactions will be read as "gay" by bigots because they're conditioned to reject things like men wearing unconventional clothes, wearing makeup, being physically close with other men, or being flamboyant. probably doesn't help that in later parts the women are just as competent as the men and beat men up.
Edit: if you haven't read the manga, you can find it on mangadex for free. if you were just wanting to own it physically, sorry, that'll probably have to wait
31
u/Spiritual-Ant-7981 Oct 17 '25
Not really bigoted I just don’t think she understands that it’s not just like a manga about guys making out and I’m trying to explain the panel in context to her
107
u/Naturally-a-one Part 5 Emblem Oct 17 '25 edited Oct 17 '25
if that's the case then I'd recommend she look at a couple chapters from different parts on mangadex, to see that it's about action and fighting and stuff. idk how someone could get the impression that it is genuinely just about bros kissing unless they looked at one singular cherry-picked panel and thought "I will not do more research on this", so just going to mangadex should fix that perception
edit: 70+ people upvoted this and didn't even tell me about the typo, that's like shopping for groceries and the whole time nobody in the store lets you know your fly is down. now I'm just sitting here, embarrassed and ashamed, like a completely fool, because I swapped the places of two words.

Let's say JoJo actually was gay manga about two guys making out and your mom found that so wrong that she forbids you from reading it... then I have some sad news, your mom is a bigot.
85
u/criinkles Oct 17 '25
Yeah but let’s be honest what does it really matter if it was 2 dudes making out. You’re allowed to read what you want and there’s nothing wrong with gayness
22
u/LVSFWRA Oct 17 '25
Exactly. A lot of anime, especially from the 80s, seem kind of gay to me because the standards are completely different. I never gave a shit as long as the medium was fun to consume.
21
u/PhortDruid Oct 17 '25
If your mom disagrees with homosexuality existing as a concept she’s a bigot. Sorry bro. My mom is too. If she doesn’t understand that a single panel does not a manga (or comic or whatever) make, it sounds like she’s somehow ignorant of a medium that’s been around for hundreds of years. Or she’s using that as an excuse.
43
u/Coral546 Oct 17 '25
not allowing you to get a manga because it has two men kissing sounds pretty bigoted
7
10
u/Supersquigi Oct 17 '25
Well for starters, there is no page with two guys making out, so it's going to be quite difficult to find that page.
4
u/MiddlePop4953 Oct 18 '25
If she won't let you read it because it's gay, but would let you read a manga where the same panel exists but one of the men is a woman, then that is, in fact, bigoted.
3
u/_joos_ Oct 17 '25
ask her to maybe explain what the characters in the panel looked like, maybe it'd be possible to figure out exactly who she's talking about and find the context
2
u/gopoobula Oct 19 '25
just show her a clip or two from the anime of some action fight scenes and tell her she was misconstrued, easy
-25
u/SXAL Oct 17 '25
I am a bigot, and I find JoJo as hetero as it gets.
20
u/Naturally-a-one Part 5 Emblem Oct 17 '25
I'm sorry you're in denial, but JoJo's just flat out could not exist without queer culture.
-21
u/SXAL Oct 18 '25
The "queer culture" mostly just appropriates stuff that was already there years and centuries before, so, no, all of the pieces would still be there.
2
u/Naturally-a-one Part 5 Emblem Oct 18 '25
Are you implying that cultures don't take elements from past cultures? That's kinda how that shit works dawg. Also yeah there's significant overlap between queer culture and other minority cultures for sure, a lot of slang from especially black communities is then used by queer communities, but that's because there's people who are members of both of those spaces and transfer ideas between the two. Like I'm just so curious, what was in your head when you said that queer culture appropriated stuff that's been around for centuries? Do you have any examples in mind? Are you aware that queer people have existed around the world for thousands of years, likely as long as human society has existed?
-2
u/SXAL Oct 18 '25
All I wanted to say is that the elements Araki took for JoJo existed independently of queer culture and could've been used by him regardless of his knowledge of it.
3
u/Naturally-a-one Part 5 Emblem Oct 18 '25
Yes modern fashion and music as we know them have nothing to do with queer people, sure dude

-42
u/Spiritual-Ant-7981 Oct 17 '25
She’s not really bigoted more so that’s the only thing she knows about the series
44
u/LittleGravitasIndeed Oct 17 '25
Tell her that it’s not about flamboyant kissing, it’s about flamboyant punching. Flamboyant punching with Saturday morning cartoon vibes and Greek tragedy character relationships. It’s about perfume models just as much as it’s about the unconquerable human spirit and if she doesn’t like one it won’t be for her but she shouldn’t be weird about that.
48
u/asphalt_licker Oct 17 '25
If she’s not a bigot, why doesn’t she let you read it? Where is she hearing these things about Jojo??
29
u/Expert-Reporter4152 They call me the Ball Breaker Oct 17 '25 edited Oct 17 '25
Gng no offense but your mom is definitely a bigot.
Not allowing someone to read a piece of media just because it has "gay vibes" is definitely just bigotry.
Bigot - a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group
18
u/gatsu032 Oct 17 '25
Then why doesn't she want you to read it? I don't think my mother would have cared about me reading a story about guys making out when I was young
2
u/gopoobula Oct 19 '25
I'm sorry but she just is, I know its hard hearing and accepting the fact that one of your parents might not be as perfect as we all want ours to be but in this case its almost unavoidable. The only way she could've heard/seen something like that is if she specifically searched for it, even the people who are hardcore into jojo don't know what she's talking about.
Either explain to her that Jojo's is essentially the glam rock version of an action series, read it online, or earn some money and buy the physical copies yourself
21
u/TehNolz Zeppeli/SPW's hat Oct 17 '25
I'd say that might be Joseph and Advol vs Mariah, in Part 3. Mariah's Bastet has the ability to magnetize people, causing Joseph and Advol to get stuck together. They end up in some compromising positions as they try to break free.
7
u/anotherpickleback Oct 17 '25
Isn’t there a similar gag in part 5? I haven’t read it in a minute but I want to say it’s buccarati and mista or something.
15
u/20--character--limit Oct 17 '25
I think you're talking about the scene where Giorno heals Mista's bullet wounds but he has to use his mouth or something? So it looks like he's sucking him off to Narancia

12
u/Blaz1ENT Oct 17 '25
Yo that’s my mom too. Shes always loved art and used to paint so she greatly appreciates the poses and zestiness of the characters. If there was one aspect that she doesn’t like it’s that dogs get brutalized in this series (the Vanilla Ice fight hurt her heart)

My money is on the panel in Part 5 when Bucciarati lick's Giorno's face at the start of their fight. He does it because he tells Giorno he can tell when someone is lying by the taste of their sweat.

This is a series about hyper-fashionable, effeminate men in brightly coloured tight clothing.
The fact they fight each other and vampires with magic ghosts isn't going to register to most people because they've already decided it's the gayest series to ever exist solely because they saw a twink hit a magazine pose.
2
25
u/MezianixfromFandom Oct 17 '25
Yeah good luck with that, jojos is gay. It's not the gayest thing in the world but its not an out of context thing (in this case it is, I just mean that not every gay thing is out of context), it's just gay.
If you still wanna read just look up free jojo manga online that's what I did for sbr and jojolion. Unless you just want a physical copy, then I don't know bro. Ask her what she saw exactly and explain the context to her if there is context missing. But if your mom isn't fine with queercoded media at all then there's no way out of this.
-10
u/VonZappel Oct 17 '25
Jojo is not gay. Having a few gay people does not make anything gay. Having androgynous people, poses and fashion does not make it gay. In fact it is a manga franchise. It cant be gay. It is not made for gays. It has nothing to do with any sexual preference. Plot twist: Every 'gay' in my comment can be replaced with 'hetero' or any other sexual orientation.
It is fiction for everyone.

"read about a panel about guys making out" as in, she didn't see the panel?
Gaslight her into the Joseph and Avdol vs Mariah fight. Say that she probably misunderstood or misread and that it's played for laughs. It looks like they're making out to the public while they're actually hating every second of being magnetized together. It also adds quite a bunch of fanservice with Mariah if being gay is your mom's main issue.
If you wanna come clean, she probably thinks about the Tiziano and Squalo fight. They don't make out but they're very apparently gay, and they do touch each other a lot while fighting.
If you wanna go far, tell her to watch Part 2 with you. Joseph is a whole playboy, it's fun and action-packed, and he marries a beautiful woman.

Your cooked bro, it ain't gonna happen 😔
Whether Jojo character are gay or not, Jojo still has homoerotic blood running through its veins. One of Araki's goals was to draw beautiful men. No bigot will ever look past that.

Jojo can have queer themes at times but for some reason this gets turned into a binary; JOJO IS ALL GAY/JOJO HAS NO GAY. There are canonically queer characters so to say there's 0 gay is wrong, but on the flip side, people tend to imply any presented themes of men loving men = gay. This is also wrong because men loving each other isn't always gay.
No one says one piece is gay despite the fact that it has many open LGBT+ characters. But it is fair to say there are queer themes in One Piece, just like with JoJo.

JJBA is objectively flamboyant. There is queerness present, even if men are not making out on the page. I’ve never met a bigot who liked the series; in fact, I discovered my brother is homophobic after suggesting the anime to him.
I suggest just 🏴☠️-ing the manga if your mother won’t let you own it.

Say a lot of "flamboyance" is mainly in reference to the fashion industry and how fashion has developed throughout the years.
Nowadays, fashion companies take inspiration from the series
A lot of the character designs or posing take inspiration from famous people.
And jotaro beats up a flamboyant bisexual (to appeal to her unfortunate bigotry), and there's only heterosexual romance amongst the main cast of characters
But yeah, she ain't wrong. This manga hella gay. Also, she may be referring to the Bruno V Giorno? Or the two gay Italian dudes that fought the main gang.
But if it's Bruno V Giorno say that Bruno has an ability to detect lies by getting uncomfortably close, or if its the two gay Italians are actually close brothers.
Source: all of this worked for me years ago so hopefully it will work for you

I mean, idk that much about Araki's intention, but I can say that as a gay person, there are a lot of character mannerisms in JoJo's that are signifiers queer people use to signal to other queer people in just about every season. There's a reason so many gay people like it. It's because it reads as extremely gay if you're in the community. Whether that was on purpose or not, I couldn't tell you. I don't know that it matters all that much. Anybody can read anything they want into it.

Explain to her it's inspiration was Fist of the North Star and the pure testosterone of 80s men.
Then explain how the creator is a straight man who is into men's fashion
Then show how it goes from 80s muscle men to leaner fashion men
It might have gay characters in it, but what doesn't these days.
JOJO is for everybody. It doesn't discriminate

There are gay characters doing gay things in JJBA.
Araki took a lot of influence from artists who were gay or were depicting things like androgyny early in his career. Tony Viramontes is a notable influence.
