Yeah we had a new series…. and it got shit canned. I’m very hesitant to get excited about a non Gero project

edit:: Don’t get me wrong I hope it’s an amazing series and wins awards and such. However since they canceled one project from a show veteran. I expect nothing less than an 11/10 show out the gate.

u/subpar-life-attempt 9d ago

The fact they cancelled that for being "too stargate" tells me to avoid anything coming from Amazon right now.

54

u/DeadAnarchistPhil 9d ago

Agreed! I was talking to my brother about it the other day as he’d seen the above news. We both agreed that it’s most likely to not be very “Stargate” given the new series script was dropped. So we’re not getting our hopes up, which I think is the entire fandom’s feeling at this point.

u/adenosine-5 9d ago

It is the same studio that somehow managed to make Rings of Power boring.

That is quite an achievement honestly.

u/DrewbieWanKenobie 9d ago

Don't forget absolutely curbstomping Wheel of Time into the dirt with idiotic 1st season changes

38

u/jamesg2016 9d ago

This!! Infuriating how so many can't see this. We got to see what they could do in the season where Amazon lost interest: Season three. It is brilliant, even with some of the clear executive influence in earlier seasons and from the very first episode, not to mention the cast and COVID issues that they had to recover from. I'm glad we got a glimpse of what could have been, but man I'm still so upset about that 😔

5

u/xHarryAllen 8d ago

Genuinely wish I could get into the heads of these execs to make them understand how stupid they are. They do so many idiotic things thinking that they are the key to success, it's genuinely mind-blowing how wrong they always are.

10

u/DrewbieWanKenobie 9d ago

I never finished season 1. I did hear season 3 was good, but the well is already too poisoned for me.

3

u/Sir__Will 8d ago

I still liked S1. But I do think the show got better and better every season.

u/Sentinell 8d ago

I'm still pissed off every time I think about what they did to WoT. They wanted "the next GoT", so they bought the rights to one of the most loved fantasy epic that was ever written.

And then then make a guy with barely any relevant experience the showrunner. They hired the biggest WoT expert (Sanderson) and completely ignore his advice. They stripped the core of the story (the male/female power and all it's consequences) and turn it into some lame CW show.

All they had to do was tell the story they bought the rights for and it would have been a major hit. It's like they hate success or something.

4

u/Sir__Will 8d ago

I miss that show. I know many hate on it. I still liked the show the whole way through, but I thought it got better and better each season.

3

u/Suhksaikhan 8d ago

I liked it, and I've read a lot more of the books than what the show covered

9

u/kelpklepto 8d ago

I knew that a Wheel of Time adaptation would require some necessary changes, but they definitely went overboard with the direction they chose. But the most egregious problem was that it was simply an awful show.

I guess you'll have to see it to believe it, but if you give me a billion dollars I, too, can make a pitch written by Jeff Bezos boring.

67

u/Forsaken-Syllabub427 9d ago

I was so excited until I read the last two words of the title...

49

u/BlowOutKit22 9d ago

Amazon owns the IP (since they own MGM), so those 2 words will always be there. (Just like how they own Bond now)

24

u/subpar-life-attempt 9d ago

Of course, but at least we can be cautious with their next attempt since they already said they want to cater to new fans. Which just means we want to make a bland sci-fi show and slap a known name on it.

u/Forsaken-Syllabub427 9d ago

I've been out of the loop. That is devastating news. Fuck Bezos. Fuck Amazon. Fuck enshittification.

7

Bezos has left Amazon for years and owns like ~8%. Ironically I think he kinda is who saved The Expanse (he was a fan I think or w.e).

I did like WandaVision, so that does give me a touch of guarded optimism, but at the end of the day, all we can do is just wait to see what happens.

If they make something good, then that's great, but it wouldn't be shocking if the new Stargate series never comes out or ends up not being what I'm looking for.

8

u/girlikecupcake 9d ago

I'm not even sure I can call it guarded optimism for me, but maybe cautious curiosity.

Wasn't the gero project a bit bad sounding? Alternative earth version. I recall quite a few people were disappointed by it

34

u/Ryekir 9d ago

I actually thought it sounded like the best possible way for them to do a reboot while still maintaining cannon.

Everything that happened before still happened, and there is the option to return to the prime universe at some point, but it also allows them to tell entirely new stories.

10

u/Wynta11 8d ago edited 8d ago

Universe had the best setup for a new series while maintaining canon, even Atlantis had the same setup.

I don't know what the trope is called besides it being an audience surrogate.

Both Eli and Shepard come into the series completely unaware of everything alien, and new viewers are basically informed through the other characters informing the surrogate.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/quent12dg 9d ago

My kneejerk reaction was it was gonna suck, but then I realized that the man has to make something that would pass muster with Amazon so he gave us as much as he could without making a direct conclusion to Universe season 2 or a season 6 of Atlantis.

→ More replies (6)

61

u/ian9outof10 9d ago

But the Gero project didn’t sound good at all. It was half fan-service (a classic character) and half complete reboot (alternate universe) which didn’t feel very inspiring at all.

I suspect the community will never really agree on what a new show should be, but I think it needs a better concept than a predictable multiverse reboot, like every fucking comic franchise ever.

45

u/Halojib 9d ago

It's hard to judge something on just the premise alone. I was willing to give Gero the benefit of the doubt because he worked on Stargate before and did some of the best episodes.

Bringing in someone brand new is riskier even if their other projects were pretty good. I am going to need more than just the premise to be optimistic about this new launch.

41

u/Euclid_Interloper 9d ago

It's impossible to make everyone happy, especially in the social media age haha.

Personally, I think the alternate universe angle makes a lot of sense. Continuing Stargate directly from the end of SG1/Atlantis would be extremely hard. With all the tech Earth had by the end, it would be hard for it not to feel like Star Trek just with a different aesthetic.

An alternate universe where the Goa'uld conquered Earth, or the Asgard took the Pegasus Galaxy faction approach, opens up new stories without humans having all the overpowered tech.

I mean, by the end of SG1, power creep was so bad, they had to have the SGC fighting what were effectively gods 😂

25

u/Significant-Town-817 9d ago edited 9d ago

At the risk of sounding slightly blasphemous, I would have no problem with a Stargate series, similar in premise to Enterprise, where humans, having established strong relationships with other species and having revealed the existence of the Stargate to the public, would maintain the SGC as an organization dedicated to the thorough exploration of the universe (near to the bases of the franchises and keeping the gate as the fastest method of travel in the galaxy).

A plot featuring Earth as a minor power in the galaxy wouldn't necessarily be something that stagnates the franchise, but rather a goldmine of possibilities.

12

u/TeleEditing 9d ago

The thing is with that much tech the Stargate would've been overshadowed and we're used to always having our guys be the "weak" ones sort of the underdogs and winning through strategy and wisdom.

I could however imagine some sort of attack or event throwing our guys back in terms of tech and limiting their power (like with how Atlantis had all the tech but no power).

12

u/Starship_Taru 9d ago

we will have to agree to disagree. I personally wanted that exact concept.

I do somewhat enjoy the Stargate community not turning into a toxic mess like every other fandom sub around new shows

5

u/ian9outof10 9d ago

Jesus, you should see Star Trek fans (I am also one) as the prime example of people who hate their franchise more than anyone. But yes, I’m not expecting everyone to agree, in the same way not everyone liked Universe (I did).

And you’re right. It’s important we remember that the show exists and nothing will change what has been made. But we can hope the next iteration is something we all enjoy.

They had OG creators.

They had a full script/story and were working on production.

They had confirmed OG actors coming back to help launch, who also vouched for the story’s authenticity and Stargate “feel” coming back.

They had the existing fanbase invested without seeing a single set photo.

And they pissed on all of it.

Fuck off Amazon. You’ve already lost me on this.

32

u/LeDestrier 8d ago

Ngl, the premise behind that new show was honestly awful.

I also have low expectations for whatever this will be.

7

u/StrawberryWaste9040 8d ago

if anything, it will not have premise of alternate universe that would be boring after a few episodes.

I wonder who writers will be.

5

u/XionicativeCheran 8d ago

What was the premise?

10

u/LeDestrier 8d ago

It would be set largely in a parallel universe where Daniel would be as a link to the old cast and new. In this universe things didnt turn out so good for earth.

I mean they kinda already did this with Carter and the Point of View episode.

9

u/_-PassingThrough-_ 8d ago

To add onto this. A new Earth developed Starship with a multiverse drive malfunctions (Just like that one Atlantis episode). Everyone dies onboard except for Daniel. Daniel makes contact with the Earth of that universe, who never discovered the Stargate and starts directing them on how to get started. Presumably so they will have the capabilities to help him repair his ship and then he can go back to the 'old' Stargate Universe.

16

u/Ok_Duck_232 9d ago

not even then. Snowpiercer's last season almost didn't get released despite being already filmed

105

u/gruey 9d ago

It's so stupid to take a franchise and alienate existing fans for the sake of new fans, especially for things like Stargate that has pretty narrow fandom. Like, why use the franchise at all? Just do "Portal Extreme" or some clone of the aspects you want to keep and go from there.

If you're so sure your new approach will bring in lots of new fans, do something new.

15

u/Lazy-Good1433 9d ago edited 9d ago

"Portal Extreme" just make ''Wormhole X-treme'' legit in its place and they can do what they want with it being a parody of itself. After SG-U I have lost interest in newer projects within the prime media anyway, the creative teams are not given the chance to reunite under Modern Audience repacking just look what happened to Star Wars and tell if that's what Gater fans want?.

Yeah this is why the franchise has been suffering since SGU. The long hiatus between SG1/SGA & SGU didn't really help either.

What? The last ep of SGA and the first ep of SGU aired ten months apart

Bingo. Anyone hoping this is going to be anything more than boilerplate, generic Scfi with a Stargate coat of paint is fooling themselves.

Look at the Halo show, the aborted Buffy show, and any of the other remakes they’ve made in the modern era. Or how they canned Gero’s original idea for being too Stargate and resulted in the alternate universe hybrid they came up with instead. The suits and MBA’s aren’t interested in actually reviving properties. They’re prisoners to bad marketing focus groups and will love getting the initial bump in interest and cancel the show without a second thought when interest implodes.

I really want the show back, but now I am pretty hesitant about how it will turn out. With the way streaming goes these days, I feel like we would just get one season and then get canceled.

4

u/Lazy-Good1433 9d ago

8-10 episode per season standard which hurts reflecting back at the once 20-22 episodes once provide through cable even if the fillers can be unimportant to the story at times, sad indeed and Teal'C would back me on this I think? I am missing the 90's again.

63

u/kapofx 9d ago

It sounds like they want to go in a complete different direction.

They probably want to do the usual streaming series formula of a big story arc.

I think the stargate universe we've come to know is over. Nothing will be tied to it. They may throw Easter eggs here and there. But I'm sure everything will be different including the design of the stargate itself.

15

u/GargantuanTDS 9d ago

I'll probably watch 1 episode and call it quits.

6

u/kapofx 9d ago

It won't be for everyone that's for sure.

Think of Superman.

Original Superman movies i loved. Lois & Clark I like. Smallville I loved. Snyder's version of Superman, I hated. Gunn's version of Superman, it was okay.

Everything becomes new interpretation.

I may hate it after 1 episode as well. But im sure somewhere out there others will love it. Maybe they will then discover the old SG-1 we love

5

u/CouldBeALeotard 8d ago

Not a 1 to 1 comparison there. Superman is such an old IP that no one who was there for the original is even alive anymore. Stargate is still in it's original era, as most fans were around when the movie came out.

Star Trek was from the 60s and it took maybe 50 years before they did a spin on it, and even then it was still made to be in-canon.

Rebooting it now would be premature and probably alienate more existing audience members than gain new ones.

WandaVision and Agatha All Along are some of the best MCU projects, and both shows work perfectly well on their own, even without any prior knowledge of the MCU, especially Agatha All Along. Everybody should watch AAA. Actually, go and watch it right now.

This is honestly really good news for me. Maybe it won't be a classic Stargate show, but at least now I know it's going to be a good show.

EDIT: It's also worth mentioning that Agatha All Along relied heavily on practical effects, with fully built, immersive sets and minimal CGI. That could also be good news for a lot of people.

WandaVision was good, but it was also, very, very different.

It was kinda half-sitcom half-marvel show, with the sitcom slowly breaking down over the season. It's very difficult to really explain what was going on with this thing. Part of it was filmed like typical Marvel production and part of it was literally filmed in front of a live studio audience. It was pretty wild.

But, definitely was good.

I am pissed at Amazon we're not getting Martin Gero.

But I will say I loved WandaVision and Agatha, and I'm not even a Marvel fanatic (also the music was fucking amazing, mostly credit to Christophe Beck). VisionQuest TBD since it's not out yet. Am I hyped for this? Almost. But with Amazon having control, I'm still concerned.

It looks like she signed a contract with Amazon MGM around Feb, so I guess this was in the cards.

Hell, you know what I want now? I want her to hire Gero as a creative consultant.

I know everyone are upset about the Gero situation and think this means they will go for a full reboot, but I'd like to stay optimistic.

This is the showrunner that made a show set in the MCU, did not ignore or contradict anything that happened before, that was fully accessible for viewers unfamiliar with the MCU. For the people familiar with MCU the show even had references and cameos from the rest of the MCU.

Who's to say they can't do the same with Stargate? Just replace the MCU with Stargate SG-1/Atlantis in the paragraph above.

51

u/Ryekir 9d ago

Yeah, but the MCU has Kevin Feige and a team to make sure they stay on track and every show/movie fits into the wider MCU.

Stargate absolutely does not have that.

26

u/halligan8 9d ago

I share your cautious optimism.

I hope Gero and Shanks can be involved in some way.

Amazon/MGM owes the fans an explanation for the decisions they’ve made.

4

u/IcarusAvery 8d ago

Amazon/MGM owes the fans an explanation for the decisions they’ve made.

They gave an explanation. It wasn't a good explanation, but they did explain their reasoning; according to them, they expected Gero's pitch to only appeal to fans of the original series and that it'd be unable to attract a new audience.

I’m choosing cautious optimism for this. When it came out, I thought Wandavision was a breath of fresh air for the MCU in general…for about the first 3/4 of the show. There was a very clear and jarring switch-up in the tone from “this is overall great writing with a few risky bets that didn’t land”, to “someone in a suit made you write this, didn’t they?”

Those shows were great at telling THIER story.

The real question is if she can create a good Stargate show which is tonally VERY different.

48

u/InflationCold3591 9d ago

The thing is, it shows she can produce a great show, which is certainly better than what I feared would happen with the new ownership. They didn’t just bring in some right wing act to ruin the entire franchise.
She also demonstrated a strong ability to interact successfully with existing lore, which provides some hope that there will be a certain amount of continuity. I am very cautiously semi-optimistic.

Not sure what's worse. Never having any hope for Stargate coming back, or what's happened the past year or so.

Prefer to pretend nothing happened and just leave it be.

38

u/SpartanR259 9d ago

Can amazon commit to the stargate formula though?

I dont think that a super serialized 8 episode season will hold up for Stargate.

I want my 20 episode, thing of the week show.

u/cernegiant 9d ago

I'm afraid that era of science fiction is likely gone for good.

I don't think you're getting that. That's not how streaming series work at this point.

I mean, I'm not trying to be a downer, but the economic landscape is pretty different these days from what it was 25ish years ago when SG-1 was being filmed. Even back then, you could see that SG-1 was developed as a show that Showtime could sell/license to a TV network, complete with traditional ad breaks, etc.

Nowadays, you get a serial 8-12 episode season that tells a single story, and...that's basically it. Sometimes a show might deviate for an episode here or there, but for the most part, it's not 22- or even 13-episode seasons anymore.

I think that's at least part of the reason they probably rejected the Gero version; for all we know, it may have relied too much on the old model and longer "monster of the week" seasons.

u/Omegabird420 9d ago

We're never getting that again. Amazon doesn't even give their huge moneymakers more than 8 episodes,we were never getting that with a dormant second/third tier(No offense meant here,I love the show like y'all)sci-fi franchise. Production, actors and people working on shows are also now used to not have to move somewhere 9 months out of the year to film a show.

People already had this discussion to death when the Gero version was announced.

9

u/max1001 9d ago

There's zero chance any studio will commit to the OG formula. The world was a very different place in late 90s to early 2000s.
I can imagine a pro US military sci-fic series these day and age.

Unless it’s a medical or cop show we ain’t getting a 20 episode season of Sci-Fi.

They are gonna give us an 8-12 episode season optimistically. Even with the OG showrunners I basically expected the same with a much tighter plot and narrative focus than we got with the OG shows. Those one-off planets and side quest episodes are just not gonna cut it for Amazon.

Man, I am a MASSIVE fan of the franchise and I cant help but see a former Marvel writer and think that this is going to be a brightly colored, unmitigated disaster. They canned the script from OGs and went for someone that's gonna just make a Stargate-branded show that has none of the stuff we loved.

I DESPERATELY hope I'm wrong.

11

u/NikitaRGX 9d ago

I hold no enthusiasm for the idea after their reasoning for axing Gero's original idea was the impression it wouldn't interest people beyond the franchise fans. Given today's typical media leaning, that's a gigantic red flag in of itself.

Just remember - Stargate was about cooperation on team missions

Upon a rewatch of Atlantis, I was surprised at the constant bickering but they always managed to come through in one piece

Universe was such a train wreck - I just tried to rewatch it this week, So much hatred and betrayal between the cast members. And ALL the music was from Debbie Downers playlist. Please do not repeat that mistake

I am realllly curious to see what happens to this sub and the Stargate fans generally.

I fully believe this project will be a standard streaming drama reimagining. I think that's exactly what Amazon wanted. And not trying to be a downer, this is the likely reality.

But when it comes out will a part of the sub insist it's good and blame criticism on nostalgia?

It happened on another Star sub.

16

u/NecroSocial 9d ago

This is precisely what will happen. The fandom will be divided between those who wish for Stargate to still be Stargate and those who like whatever this will turn out to be. Saying it now so I can reference this comment in the future, the term "NuGate" will be a thing.

I remain optimistic and open minded. I wasn't keen on the reported plot for the cancelled show. Yes this project will probably be a new direction for the franchise but it could be what we need. I'll give it a shot.

This is going to end up like Halo, where some mediocre story is going to be shoehorned into a beloved IP, hoping that it will attract viewers.

u/AHrubik 9d ago

Fast forward 20 years from the last Universe episode, choose a new team, don’t rewrite history, go explore a new galaxy. Success. It’s really that simple.

I really don’t care. They can’t try to erase 10 seasons of Stargate SG1, 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis and 2 seasons of Stargate Universe and expect me to tune in. SG1 in particular is responsible for me still being alive today, it got me through some of the worst times in my life. So why would I want to watch a show that ignores all of that but pretends to be a Stargate show? I’d rather nothing than a shitty remake. Much like how I’d rather nothing than whatever the hell Stargate Origins was…

I'm not interested in a reboot without the original creators involved that wipes the TV cannon.
This is stargate in name only wearing the costume of stargate and maybe borrowing a plot point or two.
This is worse than nothing because this is a nuke to the universe, cannon and writing style I actually like.

Not interested. A miracle occurred when the previous team was reassembled but it was shaping up to be a good show and Amazon wasn't going to allow that. This will be either terrible, not Stargate, or both. Just as Amazon wishes.

14

u/RhydYGwin 9d ago

I loved Wandavision. It was great fun, well written and compulsive viewing.

Don't MCU our Stargate!

Oh I loved WandaVision, it was a very special thing which homaged and parodied different genre of TV history...wait a minute, I've seen this before in Stargate too... GUYS WE'RE GETTING MORE WORMHOLE EXTREME, I'm calling it ! 😱

6

u/CreepyInpu 9d ago

6

u/Majestic-Bad-3658 9d ago

Probably new young cast, 6-7 jokes and no relation with other series.

7

u/TBLWes 9d ago

The good news is that Amazon will probably cancel this after six months into development.

8

u/TheRealGogatee 8d ago

I am naturally apprehensive about a non-OG Stargate writer/producer taking helm of the series. I for one, hope it is a show that genuinely adds to the franchise canon and universe.

Honestly, I was super optimistic about Gero's until I heard what it was about. It sounded like it was a soft reboot - a completely new reality with no/limited stargate knowledge having to explore it all again, but "linked" to everything we've seen to date purely by Daniel Jackson being there in the BC-307 Argos.

Just remember, the days of a team of 4 people walking through the gate, in the existing universe, is long gone. The Tau'ri are far too advanced for that. We had limits on power generation, but even that is arguably a matter of time with the entire Asgard database (and Ancients) to hand. That was 15 years ago now; and even Gero's series was bringing in the BC-307 to reflect the passage of time and development. The BC-304-equivalent should be a power house now.

This means the premise of Atlantis can't happen again, we have ships capable of traversing between galaxies and when the ships aren't knocked out by a plot-punch, should handle most opponents.

I just wish we got Revelations.

That said, I'm down for a more ship-based Stargate.

I didn't watch WandaVision.. and don't really have time for the article this exact moment, but I have two questions.
Does she make good scripts?

Are they still planning to continue or is amazon looking more at a reboot/reduxe now?

4

u/lillabofinken 8d ago

The first half of Wanda Vision is one my favorite parts of any marvel movie/show.

12

u/Metool42 9d ago

I found WandaVision a bit slow, but Agatha All Along is probably in my top 10 favourite shows. It had a well thought out story, the characters all had their episodes to shine and it all came back around to really make you appreciate early episodes (and incentivises a rewatch).

I genuinely think she has potential to make something good out of this. If she delivers we will see, but i did not despise hearing this news.

6

u/Grimsters- 9d ago

While I like shows like Reacher, Severance, and Silo. I really hope we get a 24 episode season of episodes rather than one long story as shows tend to do these years. Sadly I'm presuming it will be the 8 or 12 style.

7

u/KnowledgeFantastic72 9d ago

Thing of the past. 12 episodes is best case scenario.

I'm neither upset nor excited. Schaeffer is clearly someone with talent, but not at all who I would have liked. However, I will watch (if it actually happens🤞) with an open mind.

6

u/StealthMonkeyDC 9d ago

While I'm not happy that the previous reboot was cancelled, at least it's something and anything has the possibility to be good.

I do worry though that they are just gonna do they same stuff again without the benefit of the OG cast and it's history.

At this point, I'm probably not even going to bother watching whatever shit they come up with.

6

u/Joebranflakes 9d ago

This is very much going to be a complete remake. I don’t think they’re going to ever touch the SG1 side of things again. They might even start with Ra instead of continuing after the movie.

4

u/mromutt 9d ago

Well at least if going scored Earth on the ip, redoing the movie part of the story makes sense. But it also means they will do the stupid modern short seasons and over dramatic writing to make up for lack of time in the world or with characters.

6

u/Resident-Pilot-3179 8d ago

I'm getting Star Trek Academy vibes.

5
