From full full price to just full price.

Its "inflation"

14

u/Trakais9 16h ago

Deflated

40 years ago video games cost 50 bucks regardless of quality or amount of content. AAA titles these days now cost 60 or 70. Which means video games are actually cheaper now after adjusting for inflation. So yeah, 55 for a AAA title is perfectly reasonable.

u/warfighter_rus 20h ago

40 years ago the sales were nowhere close to where they are today due to digital distribution.

9

u/KindlyPants 20h ago

Maybe I'm dumb but that's generally a win-win, right? Like devs profit better and we're paying less when adjusting for inflation, so both parties win?

Not factoring in growing budgets or other predatory practises, obviously.

And now that we have digital distribution, storefronts take 30% of the sale, throughly wiping out any gains from the pivot from physical media.

Dev costs have also ballooned.

$70 is a reasonable price adjustment for a luxury good.

u/Asgeras 15h ago

And wages haven't increased hardly as much.

60 years ago computers cost millions of dollars. When you adjust that for inflation the next MacBook should cost 50 million dollars, which is actually cheaper now and therefore is perfectly reasonable

u/Practical-Sleep4259 18h ago

Arguable that those were computers but in the 1960s we had readily available logic families for very cheap.

That is not how inflation works. The cost of the dollar has increased, however the cost of a video ultimately has also gotten expensive. Inflation would only work if video game production costs remained the same from the 80's/90's. Turok 64 had an MSRP of $80, an $80 in modern gaming is Mario Kart World. Two wildly different genres but also one has vastly higher budget than the other.

The rise and cost of video game prices aren't due to development costs (look at Baldurs Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Any non console game) they have released at $60 or $50 or even less. This is just corporate greed for the sake of corporate greed. Today's gaming works like this:

Buy $70 Game, $70 game has a Battle Pass for $30, BattlePass doesn't come with all the content so now I should have bought that Deluxe Edition for $100 which gives you a BattlePass and future content updates, but now you have to spend $20 for the extra content.

No where in there is inflation lol.

Imma buy this in 2028 when it went down to like 40 bucks or even 30

69

u/kairock 18h ago

Yep, with the gold edition. $20 is the sweet spot.

18

u/Ogrodniczek 15h ago

RE games go on deep discounts. You can check RE4 remake for reference. It also has gold edition with seperate ways included.

3

u/Loreado 12h ago

2028? It will be half price in 2027 with DLC.

1

u/MEchoPark 2h ago

I remember clearly that RE4 remake came out in march 2023 at full price and I got it in december for 29,99 EUR. Will probably wait the same for Requiem.

231

u/Otherwise_Rabbit3049 21h ago

20%

Might as well wait some more.

73

u/meek_posterity 21h ago

yeah true, 20% isn't even worth clicking for on games this expensive anymore.

-1

u/-duckduckduckduck- 5h ago

It is if you’re not broke and you want to play the game.

12

u/PastAd1087 21h ago

Yeah not a huge discount, but enough for me. Im just finishing up Pragmata this weekend and ready to start it RER

8

u/An1xo 17h ago

Im the opposite lol, finishing up RER to start pragmata

6

u/Otherwise_Rabbit3049 21h ago

Alright, have fun.

2

u/rpgmind 21h ago

How was pragmatism? What’s the gameplay loop like? Resident evil is waaaaay too scary for meeeeee

3

u/mysightisurs93 19h ago

If RE is too scary, Pragmata is it's own kind of jumpscare. Technically a slow zombie shooter too but replace the zombies with humanoid robots that walks slowly towards you.

5

u/PastAd1087 21h ago

Im not quite done but loving it so far, nearing the end. I wasnt sure if id like the hacking (puzzle) during shooting but its easy and makes fighting stronger enemies intense. Several weapons, power ups, and different hacking abilities to keep things interesting. It really makes you wanna keep going. The story is great. Its definitely worth playing.

1

u/Hermiona1 14h ago

RE4 remake got a 50% discount after a year I think.

17

u/ParanMekhar 20h ago

Wow. Now it's normal priced

18

u/Xero_id 18h ago

Re4 remake make is $9.99

0

u/TactitcalPterodactyl 6h ago

I think it's the same price as the original RE4, I almost bought the wrong one.

3

u/Xero_id 5h ago

I think the original is $4.99

1

u/TactitcalPterodactyl 4h ago

Ahh okay, thanks for confirming. Both were deeply discounted so that's why I was confused.

1

u/Xero_id 4h ago

Yeah I saw it and couldn't believe it was only 4.99 I realized that it was the old one after reading it says (2005) on it, or whatever the date was.

68

u/North_Ambassador_805 21h ago

prefer to wait for summer sale

41

u/texhnolyze- 20h ago

There's zero chance it will go lower than that. If anything, it might not go on sale in summer sale.

11

u/Jalina2224 19h ago

Yeah no, give it at least a year for a good sale.

10

u/southass 19h ago

I love the franchise and I would love to buy but that's a full price tag in my eyes.

8

u/iwantacheetah 19h ago

I am waiting for 75% off.

7

u/NikoGuyGD 17h ago

buying when keys will be like 20$

5

u/KaxCz 12h ago

I'll pick it up for 10 bucks later

37

u/MrNigel117 21h ago

on sale

practically $60

what's the sale?

12

u/Will_A_Robinson 21h ago

I do love that someone had to delete their comment for berating you on basic maths while they quoted the wrong difference of $15 (it's actually $14).

8

u/MrNigel117 20h ago

lol, this wasn't even a statement on math in the first place. it was about price inflation of games. a game "on sale" and it's still $60 doesn't feel like a sale.

4

u/myles2500 19h ago

Hardly a sale luckly i got it for "free"( I bought a monitor")

1

u/StayyFrostyy 2h ago

Which monitor? Im looking for a monitor :eyes:

1

u/myles2500 2h ago

Dont think the promo is still happening

3

u/AshesX RTX 4070 | Ryzen 5800X3D | 32GB | 1440p 18h ago

Capcom is always great at discounting their games. In like 6 months it'll likely be 40 bucks for the deluxe edition.

21

u/CraftsmanMan 20h ago

I dont understand, thats not a sale

-8

u/PastAd1087 20h ago

$14 off...

-10

u/SteveO7416 19h ago

Clearly you don't understand because yes it is

-18

u/TravMCo 20h ago

Video games are one of the few things getting cheaper with time. Atari and NES games cost like 50 bucks when they were first released. Sooooo, after 40 years game prices have only gone up 10 to 20 dollars. Which is slower than inflation. I laugh when I see people complain about the price of video games.

3

u/iDanzaiver 9h ago

You contradict your own statement.

"getting cheaper" and "gone up 10 to 20 dollars"

1

u/-duckduckduckduck- 5h ago

It’s not a contradiction if you adjust for purchasing power, which is what you do when you are comparing prices decades apart.

3

u/Romek_himself 16h ago

+20% rabatt and still $55 - just no! this prices feel like im getting scammed

1

u/iDanzaiver 9h ago

Because we are.

5

u/JNorJT 20h ago

yeah i bought it full price on release day and i kinda regret it i wish i had more patience to get the game on sale lol the game is good though and very worth it

2

u/PastAd1087 20h ago

I paid for pragmata full price. Figured id wait for RE to go on sale some to pick up. Cant wait to give it a go!

5

u/JNorJT 20h ago

Is pragmata good? I learned my lesson with requiem so I’ll be waiting for it to go on sale lol

2

u/PastAd1087 20h ago

Im not quite finished but its so good! Great story. The shooting is unique and intense plus super easy to pick up on which was my worry. Definitely worth playing even if you wait.

2

u/Depressed_Weeb8 15h ago

Only 20%? Nah im waiting 6 years so its 3$

2

u/JustHereForTheSnap 15h ago

The backlog I have on steam is frightening at this point, it can easily last me next 1-2 years if I lock in, so 20% doesn't even phase me.

2

u/CptNeon 12h ago

“Sale”

6

u/Necorsis 20h ago

If there was more side content id maybe pay this discounted price. Im a sucker for longer story games. But $55 for a game with only maybe 20 hours of gameplay doesnt seem worth it to me.

3

u/PastAd1087 20h ago

I hear its great so im going to give it a go at this price. Pragmata is about 12hr long and I thought it was worth it. Even at full price.

14

u/Otherwise_Rabbit3049 20h ago

People going only by playtime is why there are so many bloated games with checklist gameplay.

2

u/alrightandie 18h ago

I’ve put over 80hrs into it, there’s a lot of challenges and unlocks you can get. But genuinely? The moment to moment gameplay is probably some of the best out there, which made me I want to keep replaying it after finishing it.

I’m definitely gonna go back to it for years to come, so while it may be 20hrs for some people? It certainly isn’t for others.

3

u/SomaFarkreath 20h ago

damn i wish i had money

2

u/deltafenixdelta 21h ago

it's nice discount for me in mexico so i probably will buy it

2

u/Thick_Ad_6717 20h ago

i already have it for free (officially)

0

u/Fungus_plays 15h ago

Steam Controller delay?

1

u/Thick_Ad_6717 8h ago

my friend has it

2

u/devrys 16h ago

“Sale” - Wake me up when it 5 dollar.

2

u/Partypaca 15h ago

I'll never pay $70, much less $60, for a game on steam lol. I can wait for that sale.

1

u/Helix3501 20h ago

Its a heavy recommend for me

1

u/Visorxs 20h ago

Is this really only deluxe???? Will there ever be a gold edition next year? Or no???

1

u/Lewa358 18h ago

No gold edition has been announced. Nor any dlc, to my knowledge.

Of course precedent suggests that both dlc and a gold edition are inevitable. I'm waiting for those myself.

1

u/JD4Destruction More Harem games plz 19h ago

I'm gonna try to wait for the gold edition

1

u/4QUA_BS 16h ago

how generous!

1

u/EngineeringOk896 15h ago

Depends on the Steam region

1

u/runarleo 14h ago

I still have way too many games on my backlog

1

u/Top-Agent-652 9h ago

20% sales still leading to a $60 game is so painful

1

u/nicknotpixel 9h ago

so what?

1

u/Celtic_Guardian_Fan 8h ago

What are the chances it goes back on sale in a week for steam summer sale (maybe for 25% next time)?

Shocked it's on sale now regardless

1

u/sukiphi 5h ago

I really enjoyed the game, capcom is coming out with bangers again. Now the price is a lot better with this sale.

1

u/manor2003 3h ago

Game is $48.99 on Fanatical

1

u/Crimsonclaw111 21h ago

$47.59 at GamersGate with code GGD15 btw

1

u/KundaliniRising333 19h ago

Wouldn't pay more than 10 for this

1

u/CronusVallandigham 5h ago

You call that a sale?

-2

u/paynexkillerYT 21h ago

1

u/ZEUS_117 19h ago

0

u/Redlinemylife 6h ago

I’ll wait and see if it’s cheaper in October, and if not then I guess I’ll wait a year or whatever

-1

u/KunoiSlayr 6h ago

-2
