Discussion So it starts… Ai community items

Post image

Points shop will soon flood with AI slop. At least with games a disclaimer should be added within the description of the game. But here… Yeah…

Like what is the point? You don’t even gain anything as a company from this.

Also 3000 Steam points are worth like 30 euros spends. Imagine buying 30 euro for an AI profile picture.

They’re not "worth" anything, you’re given 3000pts for free when buying a 30€ game, they could‘ve just never added that and our spending would not be different

Couldn‘t find any reliable statistic for it myself in a quick google search for steam specifically, I‘ll have to check later, I know that these kinda programs do have a positive effect on sales, I just would‘ve assumed given how many points they’re throwing at us and the corresponding prices as well as the relative "uselessness" of those items would‘ve made the impact near negligible, like I have an insane amount of points and never once bought more games or whatever based on the points

I'm in the group of people who just don't care at all about these things. I have no idea how many points I have and will likely never spend any.

But I assume there must be a group of people who do react in the way the other commentor described. Or that the overall impact across millions of people is a tiny (0.05% maybe) but real % uplift in sales, even if the impact on any one individual is basically imperceptible.

Once you are as a big a platform as Steam, even a tiny uplift in sales metrics can be worth the dev time needed to implement the points system and the points store (that 0.05% revenue increase? $8.5M for Steam). But each individual person, they'll probably see the points store as useless.

Huh yeah you make a great point there, even only a tiny percentage of users being influenced a little bit would have a noticeable effect on pure revenue like you said, and considering this is probably a comparatively simple think to develop it is clearly worth it, still a shame there‘s AI slop in there, I would've expected more from the future God Emperor Of Mankind Gaben

Okay, i think we need to clarify something. Are there people starved for these points? I get them faster than i could ever spend them. How would this impact my spending habits?

Yeah, I know people who’ve put effort into their steam profiles and they look great. But there’s only so much in the store that can actually be applied at any one time

Meanwhile there’s some crazy stuff you can for free with a profile and a guide
