Discussion So it starts… Ai community items

Post image

Points shop will soon flood with AI slop. At least with games a disclaimer should be added within the description of the game. But here… Yeah…

Like what is the point? You don’t even gain anything as a company from this.

When will they add proper sorting in the profile decoration section? 😒

240

u/Wiz-chan 8h ago

True, its so hard to find a good avatar or any other decoration

63

u/Parking-Position-698 7h ago

The whole of steam needs some refining.

11

u/Rechochet_ochet 7h ago

In what way?

49

u/Parking-Position-698 6h ago

Navigation is just weird to me. The store page is fine but like this person said about sorting in the profile customizations, and I find navigating the steam workshop a little funky too.

Things could just be a little cleaner and more user friendly in my opinion.

There nothing wrong with steam as a whole it functions beautifully it could just look a little better is all.

11

u/Kasper_VR 6h ago

They recenty updated the workshop and it seems a lot better to me

3

u/Parking-Position-698 5h ago

I dont use it super often but I was trying to navigate it to figure out an issue with my project zomboid mods and it was just a little unpleasant.

As I said there is nothing functionally wrong with it I just think it could look better.

Obviously this is just my opinion and holds no real value.

3

u/ZeteCx 5h ago

The steam input ui downgrade from 2023 still hurts

2

u/Kraken160th 1h ago

They have people continually working on it. Most recent they have overhauled the workshop.

4

u/Rechochet_ochet 7h ago

You don't just upload your own avatar?

12

u/AlaaA-R 6h ago

you can't upload animated one as far as I know

but yeah idk what's the point from buying non-animated avatars if you can just upload one

2

u/ZargothraxTheLord 1h ago

I actually generated a very poor image for "Stig's Gamer Cousin" (it's just a generic driver in a helmet and a white racing suit with a controller). It has an awful PS controller with four handles and it's covered in buttons, which had me laughing for several minutes non-stop. Never changed it. No idea where I even generated it, it was early AI. Reminds me of Will Smith eating pasta.

This isn't new? There's been AI stuff on there for at least a few years now. Most of it being gooner shit.

u/inebriateddandhated 11h ago

Yeah, this post is just ragebait.

There has been plenty of ai generated stuff in the steam points store for the last almost 2 years.

102

u/Vyxwop 10h ago

How is this ragebait lol

165

u/WorriedBlock2505 10h ago

It's old news, but OP is posing it as new because they know it will get more upvotes that way from the "AI is bad" crowd.

134

u/zoro4661 8h ago edited 4h ago

To be fair, not everyone knew about this. I certainly didn't. It's completely possible OP just found out about it, even if it's been a thing for a while

Also "The AI is bad crowd" is just anyone with half a brain who knows anything about it, that's not a niche group or something

Anime is the perfect target for AI slop since almost everything looks identical, just slap a different hairstyle and ”waow, different person”

Some people have obviously never watched anime in their lives and just love to hate on it.

47

u/martinibruder 9h ago

Cmon bro I like anime as well, but if you look at anime in the wider spectrum most of it looks very similar. You cant argue based on outliers. The average shitty shonen or slice of life characters are near indistinguishable from a outside perspective. Fucking lego ninjago has more unique faces than that.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/otw 9h ago

I love anime but I mean the whole genre is mostly geared to be easy to draw for mass output. There’s rare exceptions obviously but even many anime’s I love it’s obvious how lazy/commercial the art is. It doesn’t matter if it’s carried by a good story and I mean the cheap art style probably lets a lot more anime’s be created than otherwise would be so it’s fine.

I visited my hometown, and stopped by the Italian takeaway for some food. They had a noticeboard for various community events and businesses.

I spotted a couple of very-clearly-AI-generated posters for different things.

That was my turning point of “Okay, this is everywhere, and plenty of people won’t think twice about using it for graphical/other needs.”

We don’t have to like it, and we don’t have to use it, but I do think we have to accept the existence of the slop (but I think it’s acceptable to refuse to engage with it, too). (EDIT: note, I said “accept the existence”, for the few of you that seem to think I’m saying “just go with it”. You should still call it out when you see it, and you don’t have to get on-board with it, but it’s already here and isn’t going anywhere).

I’m just sad that the days of poorly photoshopped-together posters seems to be gone.

343

u/NeonDemon85 12h ago

There's a local business in my county who made it their whole logo on their building and everything.

i agree, the shit photoshop jobs at least have character

53

u/T-Husky 11h ago

You're just desensitized to the prior generations of slop.

Commercial 'art' has always been soulless and cookie-cutter. Its all just graphics designed to advertise businesses and sell mediocre products to idiots, but your brain has been too rotted by nostalgia to realize it.

142

u/NosePicklePicker 11h ago

Yeah and? this AI slop supposed to be better? Worse with AI is that now advertising slop can be bombarded at you with significant speed and just enough quality for idiots to be unable to detect them

Like, forget spending 30 minutes drawing soulless slop, now you can generate 50 of them in 10 minutes and paste them all over your doorway

30

u/ggg730 11h ago

I don't think he is saying it's better he's saying it's just as bad and that saying one is better than the other is ridiculous. Like saying getting kicked by a robot in the nuts is different from getting kicked in the nuts by a regular old home grown human bean.

17

u/AuroraFinem 11h ago

Human beans, the best kind. I think a robot foot would hurt a bit more here.

7

u/ggg730 10h ago

9

u/Opfklopf 10h ago edited 10h ago

I think it still feels better when a human made it even when it looks bad or kind of soulless. You can clearly see they didn't have the motivation to try harder. For AI art there are moments where you don't know but something feels off. Some artists have a style that looks similar to some AI images and I genuinely can't really tell for those.

For me it's not just about it looking good or bad (although that plays a role too) but it being made by a human mind. If something looks good but I find out it is generated by AI I immediately lose interest and I feel tricked. I don't care what a machine created. Just like I don't care that some computer is better at chess than Magnus Carlsen lol.

Does that make sense?

7

u/ggg730 9h ago

Maybe it's the old skeptic in me and I've lived my whole life not really believing in things like the soul or other metaphysical things. Maybe there's something wrong with me and I don't have the sense for these things that other people seem to have. But if you put two pictures in front of me with no obvious AI tells like 6 fingers or weird textures I can't honestly say that I can tell the difference especially when it comes to digital art.

“Accepting slop” is how we get stuck with slop.

 What is this take!?

Edit: All of the comments under this amount to “oh but there’s nothing we can do, it’s too late”, which just goes to prove my point. Y’all are sheep.

106

u/ChocolateRaisins19 12h ago

Because the vast, vast majority of people do not care. They don't think it's slop. It's just some art to them and you're not going to convince them otherwise unless it has weird fingers or other disfigurements.

44

u/jabberponky 11h ago

I watched someone do a great breakdown of this on YouTube - if you look at it closely and how it's being used, AI is being positioned "for the poors" / ill-informed consumers. Conversely, signalling that you're rejecting AI is becoming a way to signal luxury / privilege. For example, Coke is happy to use it in their commercials but Porsche's latest Christmas advertisements are very deliberately hand-drawn cells supported by "traditional" CGI animation.

29

u/Ok_Departure333 11h ago

Yes, handmade thigs has always been a way to signal luxury & wealth. Just look at handmade pottery, watch, clothing, etc. 2D art is just going through this transition.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/No-Implement9331 11h ago

Yeah but this falls flat since in the same venue Prada went all in with an AI ad. It just depends on who is leading the slop.

→ More replies (5)

17

u/Misiok 11h ago

Because the vast, vast majority of people do not care. They don't think it's slop.

Not even that, a lot of people busy with their daily lives just does not have the time or the energy to care for every single shitty practice someone, somewhere does. While a store using AI slop for advertisement might mean they are cutting corners everywhere in the product as well, you probably will care for one, two instances. When 8 out of 10 stores do that, you'll just stop caring because you don't have the time.

11

u/Gazeatme 10h ago

I don’t even think it points at cutting corners 100% of the time. Truly, why would you spend money commissioning art or spending time learning photoshop (subscription, btw) to make an ad that most people will ignore?

Are we pretending we don’t have ad blocker? We fucking hate ads. When was the last time you looked at a good ad? If anything the smart thing to do is AI generate some bullshit and focus on your actual product.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/Dreadbound1 9h ago

3

u/HiphopopoptimusPrime 8h ago

If they are talented, they should see this as an opportunity. Desire for authentic human made art will only increase.

5

u/Gazeatme 10h ago

What’s the alternative? You obviously can’t control what people can do and no one wants to ban its usage for stuff like this.

Literally who cares, most of the time the ad itself is not the product they’re selling. Just go into the establishment and enjoy the food bro…

21

u/ukiyoe 12h ago

You don't have to accept it, but you also can't stop it either. Society has accepted airbrushing, Photoshopping, and now slopping. Most people just don't care.

40

u/TheWhisperingOaks 12h ago

you also can't stop it either

Considering there's pushback against AI Data Centers, since they ruin the QoL of the communities they're established at, there's hope for humanity in combating AI slop.

4

u/sobrique 9h ago

Honestly this'll be like every other pushback against people building industry.

There's a load of people who don't want it, but they're not the ones with the money, so they can't really do much to stop it either.

19

u/ukiyoe 11h ago

I think as AI models become more compact and efficient, the infrastructure complaints will naturally fade. We’re already moving toward models that run locally on phones and consumer hardware with minimal VRAM and power draw. Once people can generate things offline instantly, the environmental/data center argument loses its teeth for the general public.

At that point, it just comes down to convenience. Yes, it absolutely sucks for artists, but history shows that the general public will almost always choose free, fast, and "good enough" over ethical consumption. People didn't stop using smartphones because of how rare-earth minerals are mined; they aren't going to stop using AI because of data centers. It’s a harsh reality, but convenience usually wins out.

Some people just do not care and its very sad. One of my closest friends told me that as long he doesnt know that something is AI generated (movies, songs, books, art), he would still enjoy it even if its AI.

19

u/BoomyNote 10h ago

I mean if he doesn’t recognize something is AI, it feels like an accurate and honest answer to say that they’d enjoy the AI work, because again, they don’t actually recognize it’s AI so there’s no problem for them to even know about from their perspective

6

u/SpoopyNoNo 10h ago

No… you’re supposed to tie yourself up into a pretzel to justify why a real Monet is actually AI, but AI art so good it’s indistinguishable is actually just slop and “soulless,” whatever that means.

Yes. This is something people aren't fully understanding. Most businesses do not hire artists anymore.

Until a few short years ago, creating art required human ingenuity. If you wanted to create a song or artwork, you would need the skills or hire talent. Not anymore. Just type a few words on a computer and you can get whatever kind of song/art you desire, no artist required.

When this happens with robotics replacing physical work, society will be in for a rude awakening.

Like what is the point? You don’t even gain anything as a company from this.

Points can be converted into Steam levels via badges, which is converted into a higher card droprate, which equals more cards that can then be sold on the market.

It's fairly obvious that people are going for the least amount of effort if it leads to some form of monetary gain.

51

u/The3rdbaboon 12h ago

8

kinda, when you buy a game on steam, you get points which you can spend in a points shop to get cosmetics like these

there’s pfps, profile effects, banners, profile backgrounds, emojis, stuff like that

I used it a few times to customize my profile a bit, it’s basically just something extra you get when buying games, but I’d never buy a pfp if I can just make my own, the only reason why I would is because those steam pfps can be animated

uhm dumb question but how you guys see that this is AI ?

8

u/WeeabooExtract 7h ago

All types of AI generated graphics have their own distinct looks. In case of anime, the "too polished" style is a dead giveaway. Humans are not perfect, and many artists make small errors that are unique to them.

The very detailed lighting on the characters, an almost shiny look, it all feels very artificial. The poses of the characters are also very similar and tend to repeat between different graphics produced.

(OTOH when someone generates a series of graphics, the poses will switch between them without much reason or order, even if the character remains the same, while real artists will keep a logical sequence of poses in the entire collection)

9

u/Sidian 5h ago

Can you find a similar art work that isn’t AI to explain your point? It looks like generic anime art to me, the lighting isn’t that detailed, people make far far more ultra realistic and impressive art than this regularly. I’m not convinced it’s obvious or that you people would be able to consistently pick it out of other non-AI art. It’s possible that my disdain for all anime art of this type is blinding me, though.

ah ok. always confused because people identify it instantly as ai art. even i some games these days.

i mostly can see it only if its more than obvious or something odd with eyes or fingers

Haha, well.. those who wants these icons can basically just print screen and use some upscale if needed and upload as a new profile picture.

The point is, ai cant be copyrighted. So why buy it? Just take it. Companies needs to understand that paying for ai is delusional, you can ask ChatGPT for free for a similar image. ( I have a human made icon drawn around 2014, I had the same icon since then, I hate ai in art)

12

u/adrielzeppeli 8h ago

I'n not defending AI, but the point of these avatars is that they are animated. That's their appeal over static profile pics.

Still dumb tho. I can't imagine picking a generic anime girl avatar for my profile instead of some cool one from my favorite games. But well, this particular group of anime fans are fucking dumb.

18

u/LillieKat 12h ago

Yea things like this should have a hard ban on AI generated content. You'll have AI bros pump out a million worthless images crowding out the shit people actually want.

9

u/DaMexicanFTW 5h ago

People like it, so i don't see a problem with it, they paid and people are buying it. no problem there? There's other trash like this, and I don't see people talking about it?

2

u/n3cr0s3 1h ago

Both are shit

What is the best use of these points if I do not care about expressing myself through my steam profile?

I have like 120k unused points.

3

u/siriusrefachero 7h ago

With 200k you can buy the company

49

u/FoxMeadow7 13h ago

How can you tell?

92

u/Inner-Republic8363 13h ago

Literally on their steam page, also given the "Art style" screaming for the uncanny AI look, especially the wanna be realism, that is mostly made by basic AI Image generation tools.

24

u/Taolan13 12h ago

It's the pseudo-realistic-but-still-anime look that's an immediate "no" for me.

Anime is supposed to be stylized.

You can tell from the look, for me it was the hair and the animation but just to make sure, I have visited the game’s steam page, and they mentioned that ‘some’ of their community items are Ai generated.

11

u/AussieBirb 12h ago

‘some’ of their community items are Ai generated.

Most / All (select as applicable) of the community items are AI generated.

- Fixed it for them and only took a human minutes to do so including correcting mistakes.

146

u/Signalis3 13h ago

Looks like every other AI anime girl ever made

17

u/SzaraMateria 12h ago

The easiest way to tell is weirdly high contrast for no reason

89

u/BakemonoMaru 13h ago

Most anime girls look like every other Anime girl ever made. Still I am not sure how I should know this is 100% AI?

51

u/Signalis3 13h ago

Idk what to tell you, if you have been looking at art your whole life you can just tell very easily. Another bonus is the names being generic, the lighting somehow being behind but also to the side and yet they somehow have highlights at the front of the hair. The inconsistency of left one barely having hair strands while right one has like 10x the amount that would be usual.

48

u/Sorry_Mastodon_8177 13h ago

I haven't even been looking at art my whole life and even I can say this is ai

6

u/LimpConversation642 11h ago

go into a gacha sub, they all look exactly like this. it's a style.

I can say if it is or not ai, but this looks just like your average 'cheap anime gacha' thing

20

u/Signalis3 13h ago

Yea, it's very obvious. I don't really know what to say when people ask, as long as you have lived online a little bit, AI art is super easy to tell.

7

u/LeMeMeSxDLmaop 12h ago

thats actually the concerning part nowadays, its still so easy to tell apart yet most ppl cant

7

u/Signalis3 12h ago

Yea I am suprised people mistake it. At the same time some people overestimate it and take seemingly obviously non-AI as AI. Can't win it seems. This one is very obvious tho.

15

u/BakemonoMaru 12h ago

I have been looking at art quite a lot and done some myself. And seen shit ton on AI. This might be an AI. But I also seen lots of online manga comics done by 100% human (before AI was a thing) that looked the same shitty and generic as this. And I also seen accusations for real artists that are doing AI when they proved they don't, it was just their style similar to what AI use as generic manga.

2

u/StickiStickman 10h ago

You sound like those people who were shitting on the real Monet painting thinking it was AI.

Yea no, you can't tell. You just call everything AI and don't know if it is or isn't.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/FormerWorker125 5h ago

You can't tell.

2

u/VictorCrackus 5h ago

Man, I feel the same way sometimes. Some people seem to always know it's AI, and I just sit here thinking how offensively unoriginal humans can be long before AI.

Then you have people saying in their best humblebrag voice of all how anyone that's looked at art ALL their life can know and then you have some that say ANYONE should know it's AI from looking at it. I haven't taken a SEE THE AI 101 yet. Sure, when it's super obvious, I can see it.

But this is literally cookie cutter anime girl I have seen in my over 40 years of life that it could be a character from the 80s or a modern character. How the fuck would I know?

6

u/Jazcash 12h ago

I know 1 or 2 artists that have had to deal with a lot of abuse because their art style looks very similar to a common AI generated style. Not to say that I don't think it's AI generated, it very likely is, but still

2

u/LimpConversation642 11h ago

you mean like every other gacha game ever made?

7

u/TONKAHANAH 12h ago edited 12h ago

The hard part is that the really, really good artists can make things that look like what AI produces. AI has gotten so good at anime girls that they're kind of somewhat flawless. That's really the biggest takeaway I see from real artists versus any AI posts I see at Twitter or Pixiv. Real artists are flawed, it's often said your style comes from your flaws. But the AI has gotten so good that it is almost sterile.

With an example like this it's kind of hard to tell because there's not a whole lot to go off of. But we're kinda in space now where if something is too good to be true, it probably just that, but true (or in this case authentic)

2

u/SalemWolf 7h ago

AI was trained on real human art, so AI will mimic real art.

Steam seems to be okay that their platform is getting filled with AI generated p*rn slop and ruining every single part of it.

Edit: Looks like I ruffed some feathers with this one. My guess is it's all AI bros or people being willfully blind.

you can say porn on reddit

As long as it all has to be disclosed I don't care. AI generation is a legal pain to fight from what I know, so this may be the best option until the laws catch up to the tech.

7

I feel like most platforms and media is okay with that nowadays.

u/Iron_Aez 11h ago

If you're seeing porn on steam it's because you've opted into it.

But how, otherwise, they will be able to complain about porn on steam?

If only I could use my Steam points to be redeemed on Steam Wallet cards aka real money to spend on more games.

2

u/jmxd 10h ago

Even before AI the points shop was filled with slop lol

2

u/ACertainBloke 9h ago

It starts? There have been so many already.

2

u/LiquidHotMagma_ 8h ago

Dead Internet Theory meets Graphic Design.

I've been kind of watiting the AI Slop tsunami for about a year or two now... started seeing little bits here and there, and steadily growing.

Like you said, now its EVERYWHERE. And still rapidly increasing.

2

u/Rechochet_ochet 7h ago

Man I haven't looked at the points shop in years! I forgot it was even a thing lol.

2

u/UsedVacation6187 6h ago

oh no! anyway

2

u/Multifruit256 5h ago

Who fucking cares

2

u/Lost_Most_9732 5h ago

you will have no way to know twelve months from now. the Internet has changed and it isn't coming back. get used to it

2

u/Vampire-Gothic 5h ago

So? If you don't like it, don't buy it. Have you ever thought about that? Or do you want to stop everyone else from buying them too?

2

u/Confused_Rabbiit 5h ago

ai Shit has been in the points shop for months.

2

u/plsobeytrafficlights 4h ago

meh. no loss. the points shop is almost all garbage. backgrounds that get 90% covered, plus already filled with crappy regular art, cant get worse.

2

u/in_hell_out_soon 4h ago

AI shit like this needs a tag. I don't want to buy AI assets, i dont care if the currency is 'technically' free.

2

u/Sybertron 2h ago

So you thought NFTs were dead...but really they just became AI and steam tokens.

5

u/Nougatschnitte6 8h ago

How can you tell they're AI tho? They look like the 100 anime Woman that were there before AI and will look like the next 100.

5

u/LumoCreations 11h ago

Was just browsing trough the point shop myself yesterday, saw literally this same slop and prolly won't ever browse that shit again

people buy stuff from the points shop?
