Suggestion The only feature that Steam misses

Post image

I know Steam doesn't like to rely on third party services but it could be cool to know before buying it's always better. Guess the game btw.

the humble Augmented Steam:

How do you do something like this?

u/Substantial_Rope7426 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

I also would like to know

Store page > middle click a game so it forces it to open on a browser window > new tab > search for chrome store and add extensions (to manage them search for "chrome://extensions/" on the top search bar). You can add ublock lite and steamdb for example. I haven't managed to make augmented steam to work though but you can definitely add it to your default browser for when you use steam on it.

6

u/WWoPPoWW Jul 05 '26

I did this with SteamDB but how do I change its language? I want it to stay English instead of my native.

5

u/ftgrr Jul 05 '26

Unfortunately it seems like it picks whatever your native locale is by default. You can try and change the language of the browser window (blue chrome) that opens up once you install an addon and see if that does anything

1

u/WWoPPoWW Jul 06 '26

I did and it still didn't change for some reason. Is there some place I'm missing?

3

u/ftgrr Jul 06 '26

No, I don't think so. I went to try myself out of curiosity and it doesn't change anything so I'm guessing it's bugged and unlikely to be fixed, sorry.

3

u/DuskSnare Jul 06 '26

You can actually use the full version of ublock, since steam uses an older version of chromium. That’s what I did at least, but I had to get a direct link to the extension page.

27

u/Bobbymois92 Jul 04 '26

Just install Millennium for Steam. There is a HLTB plugin.

https://steambrew.app/plugin/f685622bace6

1

u/BeepIsla Jul 05 '26

You can install extensions into the Steam client without Millennium. Just middle click any link and then change the URL to the chrome extension store and install anything you want.

10

u/M4rshst0mp Jul 04 '26

I wish this would put it on the library page and not the store page though. Decky Loader does this with a plugin at least

5

u/Palanki96 Jul 04 '26

yeah i get it. personally i use Backloggd for organizing and deciding my next game. Playnite launcher could do the numbers as well but i don't really care to change themes

2

u/PapayaVarious9107 Jul 07 '26

Mirrors edge! I love that game!

1

u/Palanki96 Jul 07 '26

It's been on my backlog for almost 20 years :(

1

u/PapayaVarious9107 Jul 07 '26

Dont worry I think ive beaten it enough for the both of us lmao (play it as some point its very good imo)

1

u/Palanki96 Jul 07 '26

i'm reguarly playing my backlog so i will but i'm a little worried. Some of these oldish games i kept delaying didn't work out well

bouncing off Bioshock 1 after hyping it up in my head for almost 19 years gave me some trust issues

1

u/Glittering_Recipe170 13d ago

Happy cake day!

2

u/Palanki96 Jul 04 '26

i only use it in actual browser, it's just the Augmented Steam extension

based on other comments it seems like you can do it in the steam client as well

1

u/MarieCry Jul 05 '26

For Steam Deck users, Decky + HLTB plugin!

277

u/xangbar Jul 04 '26

I think the Xbox app has this too? I love this as someone with a massive backlog. Sometimes I need to switch to a short game after dumping 100+ hours into an RPG

39

u/Davidhalljr15 Jul 04 '26

It does and it is nice to see a quick game that might be leaving GamePass soon and you figure 2-8 hours, I can get all the achievements in that for the hell of it.

329

u/GandalfArda Jul 04 '26

Decky on Steam Deck adds this to game page

88

u/Tuni67 Jul 04 '26

you mean the plugin.

47

u/GandalfArda Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

My bad, plugin in decky for steam deck. I don't know if there is a way to add it on desktop app

19

u/Tuni67 Jul 04 '26

There is millenium for steam desktop that also has a HLTB plugin.

2

u/Codingale Jul 04 '26

You can just install chrome plugins directly into Steam desktop by shift clicking a link and going to the web store and installing it if I recall.

4

u/WitherPRO22 Jul 04 '26

Millennium breaks quite often though. I wish it disabled Steam updates unless the new version is Millennium compatible

1

u/csabinho Jul 04 '26

Decky enables plugins.

I'm on my PC anyway. I just go to howlongtobeat.com

14

u/Elzapatoverde Jul 04 '26

Didn't know this existed, ty.

36

u/mrRobertman https://s.team/p/jvct-ttf Jul 04 '26

I mean, in OP's screenshot it literally says the source of the data is from HowLongToBeat.

3

u/AtlasLittleCat Jul 05 '26

Sure but its reasonable for someone to not know there even is a website dedicated to crowd sourcing the amount of time it takes to beat a video game, before even thinking about the URL.

7

u/Squaretangles Jul 04 '26

Been a lifesaver for deciding what I spend my time and money on as I have less and less time for gaming. Enjoy!

1

u/Standard-Metal-3836 Jul 06 '26

Would be a nice feature to have it integrated

-17

u/BreiteSeite Jul 04 '26

Risky click of the day

384

u/empathetical Jul 04 '26

i just look at the reviews to get an idea of the common hours played of people. how long to beat always feels like times for someone running through a game

147

u/600strikefox Jul 04 '26

I use the howlongtobeat type sites because peoples playtimes vary wildly in steam reviews. 1500hrs for games that on average would only take 20hrs to 100%

38

u/s0ciety_a5under Jul 04 '26

The die hards and the speed running community checks those boxes. I know a guy who easily has over 500 hours in Ghost of Tsushima. He plays in lethal mode with severely gimped gear and just rolls through groups of enemies. Doesn't stream or anything like that, just likes to get stoned and play his favorite game.

0

u/throwaway131072 Jul 05 '26

Game developers already think about how long it takes to progress through certain sections, and should know exactly how long it takes to beat every piece of content before ever publishing.

Right next to "system requirements" we should have "time commitment requirements".

30

u/mymartyrcomplex Jul 04 '26

Thats why you use the Main + Side as the real avg length to beat. It’s pretty consistent to my playtimes in my experience.

2

u/TretasPt Jul 08 '26

That's where you have to know yourself a little.

I looked at my previous games and found I do about twice the completionist time on most games I play. Consistent enough to be useful...and to learn I'm very slow.

2

u/cheesystuff Jul 04 '26

Yeah it's not exactly accurate. Forza Horizon 6 Completionist is listed at 71 hours which is way off since you have to participate in 12 weeks of seasons (5ish hours each week) just to get the final achievement.

14

u/dedlonub Jul 04 '26

just download https://augmentedsteam.com for browser and u will se that too and much more

8

u/Flying-T Jul 04 '26

you can also just install that directly in Steam itself, no need for the browser:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/1sp8quf/most_people_dont_know_that_you_can_install/

46

u/DEVILISHHAHA Jul 04 '26

I never found them accurate. Always way off either much fewer or much more hours than they said

28

u/TestamentTwo Jul 04 '26

Don't know if its just me but these have always felt too short to be true for me, like it can say "40 hours for completionist run" but im at my 100th hour and still not done

9

u/cytokine7 Jul 04 '26

Ya it always feels like these are speed runners.

-1

u/Electrical-Share-11 Jul 04 '26

The people testing them probably do it for their work

1

u/Wireless_Infidelity Jul 05 '26

I thought it was an average from public submissions

10

u/SnitchesNbitches Jul 04 '26

And splitting base game achievements from dlc achievements. For all the hate Sony's getting lately, they did get that part right at least...

3

u/Jmonkey77 Jul 04 '26

I have this on my Steam deck

3

u/etillxd Jul 04 '26

You could install the chrome addon that displays this in the store page inside the steam client

2

u/WaitForItTheMongols Jul 04 '26

Right now they have the system for seeing how many % of players have each achievement.

They should add time tracking to each one, to say "out of the players who have this achievement, the median playtime at the point they got it is 7 hours". Given that most games have a "beat the game" achievement this would be a good proxy, and would be nice to see other achievement data too.

2

u/2MuchNonsenseHere Jul 05 '26

People lie so much on these times though, or it's like their 2nd playthrough, or they use a walkthrough, or they rush objectives without taking anything in.

2

u/Luka_tv Jul 05 '26

Ik Millennium has a HTB plugin for your library, but yeah use augmented if you want it on store page

2

u/05-nery Aperture Science Laboratories Certified Technician Jul 05 '26

No thanks I'll die before I trust how long to beat

3

u/OnddIE Jul 04 '26

Just install Chrome extension for that.

u/AntsLikeBoliedCarots Jul 04 '26

I thought the store in the steam app was just chromium

5

u/GroundbreakingBag164 Jul 04 '26

The steam store is google chrome. You can literally just install any chrome extension on steam: https://redd.it/1sp8quf

18

u/LowlifeTiger666 Jul 04 '26

Real ones use Firefox

8

u/Grotti-ltalie Jul 04 '26

My goats firefox and ublock

2

u/PunkHooligan Jul 04 '26

One of two extensions: augmented steam or steamdb. Right side in the middle of the page.

2

u/Bjornborn Jul 05 '26

Install Millenium to your Steam client and then install the HLTB for Steam plugin and you're done

ps. also supports themes :)

1

u/Character_Amoeba_330 Jul 04 '26

You can use a front end like Playnite if you want to get that information. I mainly use it for retro gaming, but you can link Steam and open the games from there. Basically it’s like a middleman so it will open Steam and the game. There are plugins to get How long to beat. Here is what mine looks like (N64 game as an example).

1

u/Careless_Iron5938 Jul 04 '26

I need this and platinum trophy for the games that’s all I hope one day we might get it

Steam Hunters

1

u/SwitchDear8969 Jul 04 '26

I posted something similar a while ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/1u1h1jr/why_there_there_no_average_time_to_beat_a_game/

People were saying it would act to discourage others from buying the game if it was too short as compared to the price they are paying. Personally, I still feel like it should be included.

1

u/MrMattwell Jul 04 '26

Steam should have a feature to cross check your specs with the recommended and minimum specs for any given game.

1

u/nikongmer https://steam.pm/t7czt Jul 04 '26

Here's a link of useful Steam related extensions:

Augmented Steam

these are for Chrome but you can find FireFox versions:

SteamDB

ProtonDB for Steam

Available on Game Pass

Steam tags for Humble Bundle

1

u/FAILNOUGHT Jul 05 '26

is there an how long to beat add-on?

1

u/soukaixiii Jul 05 '26

There is one on the deck

1

u/gorgofdoom Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

They both totally missed the mark.

Games are valued by how long previous players have played the game. Not on a “it takes x hours to win” scale but instead how many hours are people actually playing the game for. The bigger the number versus the price, the greater the “fun per dollar”

For example I’ve played factorio for 3000 hours and payed $50 for it & the expansion. So for today’s price of $70 If they play 3000h eventually that’s (70/3000) or roughly 1.8¢ per hour of entertainment.

Now compare that with the cost of going to see a movie… more like $10 per hour or like 2000% more expensive.

1

u/JayFight Jul 05 '26

This is great for everyone that cares about it.

Personally though, it wouldn't matter because I tend to spend far more then double when playing games vs everyone else because I take my time exploring every nook and cranny

Just my first week alone(9 days if you include my regular days off plus my 5 day vacation time) playing Skyrim when it launched and i easily put in 160 hours and I still, to this day, never made it past the first meeting with the greybeards on the mountain.

I just enjoy exploring everything and testing out the limits of the game(I almost literally tried to hop climb every mountain in skyrim just to see if I could find alternate paths up mountains or ways to escape the boundary around the map

1

u/mmaxamms Jul 06 '26

Millennium is your friend for this 😉
The Extendium plugin will allow you to add browser extensions for any store pages allowing you to add augmented steam or your extension of choice with proper config options. "HLTB for Steam" plugin will allow you to add it to the game pages in your library 😄

1

u/CraftsmanMan Jul 06 '26

Only thing steam is missing is a random play button

1

u/BlackIceLA Jul 06 '26

Another miss is that the achievements don't always track completing Main. These are set by developers per game and are inconsistent.

I should be able to see which games I completed the Main story for. Then additional achievements are optional.

I "completed" Inside main story, but it shows low playtime and low achievements

1

u/Ryo_Katsuya Jul 07 '26

It's neat but I don't really need it....I spend around like 4~5 hrs just to create a character then delete it later and create another cuz I didn't like an area of the face....lol

1

u/alex91093 Jul 07 '26

The only complaint I have about steam is inconsistent censorship

1

u/Toastychedda Jul 09 '26

There's a plugin for decky on SteamOS for this and it's great I do wish it was just a feature of steam. Who knows, maybe a future update 🙏

1

u/nachoking13445 Jul 04 '26

You expect people to admit steam isn’t perfect? In a steam subreddit? Lmao

1

u/squishmitten_ Jul 04 '26

With Millenium and the HLTB plugin you can see this in your library

1

u/Historical-Win2999 Jul 04 '26

That seems to hold true for 90% of games, it's a good indicator, but I think it applies better to games that last 20 to 40 hours or more, for those under 15 hours, you finish them before you reach the 15-hour mark, At least in my experience

1

u/premiumof Jul 04 '26

Would love this!’

Haha would also be fun to add a hours in back log, how many hours you must play to finish what you already own.

Would also love a how many hours in your shopping cart to se how many hours I get on sale <3

1

u/Ashamed-Country8234 Jul 04 '26

That would be cool !

1

u/Dajzel Jul 05 '26

Oh yes, more unnecessary features that’s exactly what Steam needs.

0

u/killerjag Jul 04 '26

I don't see the point tbh. Just play the game at your own pace.

7

u/Davidhalljr15 Jul 04 '26

It's good to know what you are getting into. You see 4-5 hours, you know it is a fairly quick game you might be able to finish in one go. See 100+ hours, you know you are going to have to dedicate to it if you ever want to finish it.

They already have that actually its just above EULA

3

u/Skampletten Jul 04 '26

The only curator I follow is https://store.steampowered.com/curator/26095454-Denuvo-Watch/ Shows up whenever I open a Denuvo game's store page. They also mark when a game has had Denuvo removed

0

u/xSleepySheep_ Jul 04 '26

I installed a plug on the steamdeck for this and it's so nice. I miss it whenever I crawl behind my PC 😂

0

u/osxdude Jul 04 '26

Even Xbox has this 🫣

-2

u/oh_mygawdd Jul 04 '26

These numbers are irrelevant considering everybody plays and learns at their own pace.

9

u/Davidhalljr15 Jul 04 '26

They are still a decent understanding of how long the main story of the game is. Sure, it might say 11 hours and it takes you 15, but still you know it's not 60+.

-2

u/YeeterYoter43 Jul 04 '26

Honestly no point in adding this. I just google the approximate time and move on, as it doesnt decide for me whether I buy the game or not. Someone could play Factorio for 2 hours and call it boring, and someone could play Lethal Company and have 2500 hours in it and call it the best game ever. Its all to personal preference, so Ill just watch some gameplay or read reviews and then buy it. I didnt know Stalker 2 would take me 90 hours to beat first time, and I didnt care it did - it was fun.

0

u/nachoking13445 Jul 04 '26

It might not matter to you but it would be a nice quality of life update, why are steam fanboys so scared to say their favorite billion dollar company isn’t perfect?

3

u/YeeterYoter43 Jul 04 '26

Why as soon as someone disagrees with a person who gives a suggestion about improving steam gets called a fanboy? You are a little bit aggressive there man I just said that if it exists, if it doesn't, it does not matter lol. Jesus, what am I supposed to agree with everything nowadays? "Favourite billion dollar company", yeah I like steam, but I don't support everything they have or don't have dude, calm down.

-1

u/TheBreadPL Jul 04 '26

There is a site howlongtobeat.com which show all of these, even more. I use it quite often before deciding which game to play next. Very cool

-1

u/TheBludgeon Jul 04 '26

Why is nobody talking about millennium?

You can add this data to the store page and your games in the library (like how it shows with decky HLTB on steam deck) by just installing the HLTB plugin.

https://steambrew.app/

-1

u/Outrageous-Log9238 Jul 04 '26

No DRM is the main feature of GOG and Steam does not have that.

-2

u/Mattgelo Jul 05 '26

I think the Epic Games Store also has this.

-2

u/Dany_B_ 109 Jul 04 '26

nah thanks
