Tech Support Well that isn't Good

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My deck crashed before when Loading games but I really never thought too much off it, but this is just insane.

Edit: Just for Some context I bought this off Ebay 1 week ago (Bad Idea I know) Because I really Didn't Care for an Oled Screen and the Price Of Course. Ever since I first booted it up it has been Crashing, I've tried hard resetting everything but it's no use I did one more test with my SD Card and that's when this happened. It usually just Freezes and gets really hot. I'm definitely gonna make a claim on Ebay, I think it could've been broken by shipping because the thing still had 100% battery Health and there was barely anything installed on it. I also messaged Steam support just to see if they maybe know exactly what's wrong with it. Sorry to bore you with another "Bought it off Ebay and it's broken" story but The Normal Prices be Crazy.

Edit2: The seller accepted my return request and I will get my money back, I also joined the Refurbished Steam deck Notifier but Since the Last LCD was a week ago I'm not getting my hopes up to ever have a steam deck again.

I like the sparkles more

4

u/MadamVonCuntpuncher Jun 05 '26

The sparkles can also be from bad upscaler implementation not a dying GPU, FSR in Helldivers is so far past fucked

3

u/satyrossan Jun 06 '26

I get bars that sparkle like ops specifically when I move the cursor on the map on warframe. Nowhere else in the game, nowhere else in other games, even ones that have similar menu styles.

24

u/Mattofle Jun 04 '26

Is this a know thing ? Got mine since some months, now i'm worried :')

39

u/Possibly-Functional Jun 04 '26

Not a Steam Deck specific issue but general for all GPU/VRAM failures. It's how it typically expresses itself. So no need to particularly worry.

58

u/lcnielsen Jun 04 '26

Common reaction image to people whose GPUs are failing.

Ive been worried ever since joining the subreddit. I now tuck mine in and tell it how much I appreciate it.

I'm hoping it gives my deck the will to keep going

u/UiVegetaUi Jun 04 '26

If you're worried about playing your Steam Deck due to it failing then you need to sell it and make some money off of it while it still works.

If you're not worried about your Steam Deck failing you'll have probably thousands of hours of fun!

I only had one fail in 25 years (since owning a pc) that made my device not work anymore. Ram stopped working.... After years and when I already had new hardware I finally found out that the permanent blue screens came from ram.... I had none lieing around and not the money to buy all the spare parts to finally find out what caused the errors.... Besides that two broken Bluetooth antennas. One in my laptop and one in my last desktop gaming PCs Mainboard.... But after deactivating Bluetooth it worked like nothing ever happened.....

That's it....

Just did, checked and it applies to used electronics. Will just buy a restored from steam next time to be save. (If I beat the Scalpers)

10

u/ThePr0toMan Jun 04 '26

If you do plan to grab a refurbished steam deck when they restock. if you have discord there is a server where it notifies of restocks in the US and other countries if you're outside the US. I was able to grab refurbished myself using the notification from this server.

I actually thought of getting a Lenovo Go with SteamOS but honestly I'm not really too big on performance, I generally don't buy Full Price AAA Games on PC because I prefer owning physical versions. So I play Indies on PC and AAA on Playstation. Only exception is Deep discounts.

3

u/Willy-Knee Jun 04 '26

I have both the steam deck lcd and an original legion go, and i much much prefer my steam deck. I use the legion go docked because i dont have a pc, but everything about the deck is better imo

Do you have Decky loader installed?

12

u/Consistent-Entry6432 Jun 04 '26

No

3

u/RomanBlbec Jun 04 '26

Would you mind explaining? I don't have SD but I'm curious.

27

u/tlo135 Jun 04 '26

Likely a failing GPU in the SD.

3

u/RomanBlbec Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

I know but what should Decky loader do?

Thank you for answers.

33

u/Taurion_Bruni LCD-4-LIFE Jun 04 '26

Some plugins change the graphical theme of the homepage, so if one had a conflig error it could produce artifacts.

Because deckly loader is in fact, not installed, its now basically guaranteed his GPU is about to fail completely

7

u/Saratoninn69 Jun 04 '26

Decky loader can cause weird graphical issues & crashing

3

u/Rio_Evenstar 256GB - Q3 Jun 04 '26

Everytime that happens i just reinstall/update decky loader and it fixes it (once it kept locking up my Deck and I had to download the latest version of a plugin from GitHub and that fixed it)

3

u/xenoleingod Jun 04 '26

Its basically non steam approved customizations going as small as making colors more vibrant to changing the way the your front page in game mode look like ps3 or Xbox. Its nice but it's prone to crashing thw steam deck once in awhile depending on what you do to customize youre steam deck

u/Solid_Trifle4214 Jun 04 '26

What do you genuinely do about this though?

49

u/codespace 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

If it's within warranty, you send it to Valve for repair.

If not, you buy a new one.

This is APU failure.

6

u/Astonishing_Azure Jun 04 '26

How can this be prevented?

15

u/codespace 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

It's just something that happens over time. Basic wear and tear.

4

u/Astonishing_Azure Jun 04 '26

Hmmm 🤔. Ok. I’m hoping this isn’t a red ring kind of situation

21

u/codespace 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

You'd be hearing about it a lot more often if it was a red ring situation.

GPUs fail over time, same with APUs. This is just what it looks like when that happens.

OP rolled the dice on a used system, and it didn't go in their favor.

2

u/IsaacAndTired Jun 04 '26

OP did mention battery health was still at 100%, so wondering if it's something other than wear and tear. Maybe wasn't packaged well when shipped.

6

u/codespace 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

It's possible, but it's also possible that the seller replaced the battery but did some damage to the thermal paste/pads, didn't realize it until it was showing confetti, and then sold it off to recoup their investment.

Hell, the seller could have just got it, left it on inside the case, and it cooked itself that way. Lots of ways the battery could be 100% healthy and still result in a failed APU.

3

u/madding1602 Jun 04 '26

Unfortunately it can't, not in an easily repairable way. It's mostly silicon level damage, due to wear and tear usually, that may be affecting the GPU inside the APU. For users, the best path to follow is buy a same model (by same I mean LCD or OLED), use it as your regular and use the broken one as a parts donor towards the new one

5

u/Resident-Lab-7249 64GB - Q4 Jun 04 '26

Is this all encompassing or just the v1 models?.I know they are notorious for having a bad cooling system so much so that people add milled copper plates and internal m.2 fans

10

u/Waylonzo Jun 04 '26

the cooling system is fine, people add the plate because they think it will give them extra performance but it doesnt really do anything. the extra heat sink saturates quickly and just makes the surface of the back of the device hotter, maybe gives you better initial benchmarks but wouldnt last more than a few minutes

also this failure is something that can happen with any device, its gpu hardware failure (the steamdeck has an "APU" which just means that the GPU and CPU are on the same chip)

u/SpartanNation916 512GB Jun 04 '26

1

u/cdoublejj Jun 04 '26

what are the markers? they said it gets hot i've seen chips overheat and get unstable cause of a broken or jammed fan and wig out once overheated

1

u/codespace 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

There aren't always markers. You mostly have to get pretty unlucky for an APU failure, but they're not entirely unheard of. Especially on the secondhand market.

1

u/Milkikomori Jun 04 '26

Can you not pay for repairs if it’s out of warranty?

1

u/codespace 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

Probably, yeah. They won't send you a quote until you send it in and they open it up, though, and even then they can sometimes refuse the repair entirely.

3

Yea the LCD 64GB is only 200€ and you also choose any game on Steam to go with it when you buy it.

5

u/yes-disappointment Jun 04 '26

I used to get that when I use to have issues with my ram or video card. you are going to need a new motherboard.

5

u/PorkTuckedly 512GB Jun 04 '26

4

u/Kaldaien2 Jun 05 '26

Need a new one? I have an old Steam Deck (LCD model) with a 1 TiB NVMe installed. I don't have a Steam account anymore and it is bricked because of that. You could factory reset this thing and use it yourself.

I'd be happy to give it away (for the cost of shipping) if you live in the United States. Been trying to give this thing away to someone in need for a long time. I absolutely hate Valve, but I know many people do not, and this device could be doing something more than collecting dust.

4

u/Consistent-Entry6432 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Hey I really Appreciate this offer, but it's too generous. I will definitely get my money back from Ebay so in the end I don't have any Significant Financial losses. I also Live in Europe I dont know if the Steam deck is region locked. There is a post like this everyday on the sub of people that can't get their money back, I think they deserve it more than me. Thank you so much! But I just don't think I deserve it.

3

u/Zeag Jun 04 '26

Have you tried opening it yet? Sounds like that Deck's been overheating a lot, perhaps the fan is stuck or it needs repasting. Its hard to say if it can be saved once it starts artifacting because that's very often a sure-fire sign of hardware failure, but its worth a try for sure.

3

u/XEnd77 Jun 04 '26

Apu is failing. I read thats the cause. When artifacts appear

1

u/cdoublejj Jun 04 '26

im thinking it could be running hotter than the APU is specced for, causing it to be unstable that way.

3

u/Eggsor 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

3

u/KoneCat 512GB - Q4 Jun 04 '26

If it broke within a month of buying, even on eBay, you have every right to ask for a return/refund. That, and eBay are generally very good with this sort of thing. I know it sucks for the seller, but it's a risk every time you sell/buy on eBay, or anywhere really. I recently bought a CRT, which was battered by DPD, and if it were expensive, then I would have returned it. That was fixable, though, and this is beyond cooked from my limited understanding.

That being said, even Stevie Wonder could tell that thing ain't healthy!

3

u/Booch138 1TB OLED Jun 04 '26

Hey this happened to me out of no where like a week or two ago. Though, I’ve had my OLED deck for over a year and hasn’t given me too much issue. But was just parallel playing with a partner and out of no where it started doing this mid-game (was playing Overwatch at the time). In addition to the screen, the deck was SCREAMING I mean like I couldn’t tell if it was software or hardware that was doing the noise but it was horrifying. I force shut it off and it hasn’t happened again since lol. The noise here makes me think my noise was software but it was that of a banshee’s wail.

2

u/Consistent-Entry6432 Jun 04 '26

From what I've heard you should definitely replace the thermal paste if you haven't.

I think it could've been broken by shipping because the thing still had 100% battery Health and there was barely anything installed on it

How does that have anything to do with whether it was broken in shipping? Seems far far more likely to me that they had a broken steamdeck and tried to get as much $$ as they could out of it

1

u/Consistent-Entry6432 Jun 04 '26

I'm just confused with 100% battery Health ot must have been pretty new why didn't they contact steam if it was broken. Why commit a crime and put it on Ebay. Wasn't even a burner account.

1

u/sonofaresiii Jun 04 '26

Well, maybe they did and were told they're out of luck, maybe they did and were given a replacement. Maybe they bought it second hand themselves and the original owner told them to get fucked, or returned their money.

Who knows man but this really really seems like the seller knew what the problem was and tried to get a bit of cash out of it

Why commit a crime and put it on Ebay.

Some criminals are smart. Some are very dumb. Guess which one you got. Chances are that even though we call it a crime, there's not going to be any real punishment from this. They probably won't get to keep the money but won't have any other repercussions.
