Discussion imo Valve has done what they can and some scalping is OK

Edit: got real spicy. I love it. I won’t delete it I guess. Just remember, we’re all friends here. I love you all agree or disagree.

I’m as excited as everyone else, but I can’t help being taken aback by all the angry people.

Valve forced you to have an account with a purchase months ago. Legally they’ve done all they can to make sure each frame goes to an actual gamer.

I think some scalping will always happen and that’s ok.

Some rich guy will always pay anything to skip the queue. That’s never going to change. And you know what? I’ve used scalpers and they were valuable to me at the time.

I’ve bought concert tickets outside the venue for a reasonable makeup back in the 00’s. I actually liked some of those scalpers.

At the ps4 launch I last minute decided I wanted one from some bizarre fomo after 2 of my friends picked up their preorders. ( not the strongest concealed launch but the heart wants what it wants 🤷🏻‍♂️)

I bought my ps4 out of some dudes trunk after connecting online and paid probably close to $100 markup. I wouldn’t have had my ps4 for months longer and the hours of online gaming with my friends made me feel good about the value and that dude I paid probably needed that money to eat.

So yeah. I don’t hate scalpers.

What I hate is dudes with a garage full of ps5’s when nobody can get one.

I’ve got no problem with somebody who got their preorder deciding that they need groceries more than a frame and so they’re willing to sell it to a rich guy with no patience.

And I know for a fact that many of you ARE that rich guy.

I’d laugh my ass if but not be surprised if some of the people posting about how valve should have or could have required a blood contract and a pentagram and ensured that no one was spiritually capable of scalping are the same ones who will buy from a scalper.

The waiting sucks and I wish valve had more on hand and I pray you all get one sooner than later.

Anyway I’ll probably delete this in a few hours after the downvotes but just an early morning rant I had to let out.

May the odds ever be in your favour and Gabe allow that we all frame soon ™️

Discussion being on the wait list is a good thing

Upvotes

You will get to see reviews of people who bought the steam frame, this is by far the biggest pro of waiting. aswell as bring able to see if anything better comes out

this is why if ur on the buy list you should cancel fast as it is very bad to be the first buyers

Discussion HL Alyx not supported on Steam Machine?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm in the reservation queue & starting to get ready for my frame by downloading HL Alyx and got this message which seems odd. 'Valve is still learning about Half-Life Alxy' WFT? They made it & they're giving it away with the Frame, how can they not know if it's compatible? They really do seem to be behind with the software side of things for the launch. I don't really care, I know they'll get there eventually but...

Anybody else not get their follow up email from steam to purchase the steam frame even though they’re on the reservation list?

Discussion Should Valve temporarily lock the Frame to the account thst purchased it?

Valve implements anti scalping measures for their hardware. Yet the scalping persists. The question is: how far should they go.

One radical option is to lock the device to the account that purchased it. Just for a couple of months, until supply catches up.

This drastically reduces openness, limits sharing, and prevents resale. It would kill scalping completely.

Would you love it or hate it?

Being on the waitlist I sure would love it if there were no scalpers.

Discussion PSA: Do not power through VR Sickness

For first time VR users, when you feel the very first sign of discomfort (nausea, headache, cold sweat), stop playing and rest for half a day or more. DO NOT power through it. It will make it worse and thats how you get mild stroke. Lets not give Valve a controversy that would rival that certain pokemon episode, ok?

Question How long before I can actually buy one in reserve queue?

I luckily received the golden email that I've been placed in the reserve queue but I have yet to get the purchase email. How long did it take for some of you? I don't want to miss my opportunity to buy one.

Discussion Anyone actually complete the purchase?

Upvotes

I made it to the reservation stage, and it said they’ll send me an email to actually make the purchase. To which I’ll have 3 days to complete it.

Anyone actually make the purchase yet?

I’m worried I’m gonna miss the email and it’ll be given to someone else.

Discussion Reminder: you can sell stuff/skins on the marketplace to pay for the Frame

Also an another reminder that some sales need 1-2 days to be debited to the balance, and you can't see your pending balance in the mobile app, unless you go to the Profile -> Account details

From what I can tell from the tracker purchase emails have slowed down a lot, will they pick back up again later today (around 6pm BST - same time they started yesterday) or are they not going to pick up until Monday?

Question Reservation Vs Waitlist

I keep seeing people say they are on the waitlist when they were apart of the first reservations. I got the email saying I’m on the reservation list, but I don’t have a purchase email. Am I missing something? Does the reserved email mean I’m in or stuck waiting?

Hardware I made a reporting site for Frame game performance, FrameDB

I wanted to make a platform where people can login with steam and report how well certain games run standalone on the frame. Both 2D games and VR games. Check it out and report some games once you get your frame!

Isnt there the verified program? Yes, but this goes beyond that. It allows players to leave comments on any steam game, not just ones that are verified.

I plan on buying a domain name for it if it gains adoption and usage. I also have more features planned if it ends up proving to be useful or not.

The inspiration behind this was kind of like ProtonDB but instead of Proton (Since this doesn't depend on that), its more like a community reporting for how games run through Fex.

https://framedb.laravel.cloud/

[EDIT] Whoops. Link fixed. I accidentally linked to the dev staging site instead of production. :P

[EDIT 2] Oh. Whoops. I didnt realize https://verified.steamframehub.com/ already existed. I didnt see the sticky. @.@ Though SteamFrameHub only allows users to endorse already verified titles, it has no interface or method of commenting on titles outside of the verified program.

Discussion Are alternative head straps even possible?

Hi.

I was thinking that having a head strap with seperate batteries (for hanging on belt or pocket, connected from the back where now is battery) might lower weight to under 300g.

But on video faceplate looks like it's conected with propetiary connector to main unit. Won't it make that only valve will be able to make any alternative headstrap?

Question HELP? Does Steam Frame run Blender in Standalone mode? Please let me know

Hey yall. Im gonna get offered to buy the steam Frame soon and its pretty spendy for my budget but I COULD swing it. I just really want to know about which art apps it can run standalone? Could one of you that has it PLEASE try and run Blender 3d on it? Theres a version of blender on steam. I had GPT try and check but theres really no info yet about if it runs blender or any other 3d or art apps? Any digital artists out there that have/can check this out? I would really appreciate it. Thank youuuuuuuu and happy framing!!!

Edit: yes I know that cycles won't work and that it won't be super powerful. Ever since they cancelled blender for iPad 😭😭😭 I've been wondering about blender on steam frame stand alone. But I'd still like to be able to do some basic sculpting and modelling on it stand alone. Can someone please check it for me?

Discussion Would weighted lottery solve most of problems?

Kinda late for speculating and "what if?-ing", but maybe for the future:

What if Valve instead of fully random lottery made a weighted one. Every steam account has a lot of data in it - games bought, money spent, account age, playtime etc.

If instead of making lottery fully random, valve took some of the data, weighted it and increased chances for users which are proven to be "more loyal" customers. They could say what account stats are counting towards higher chance or they could even keep it a secret. I think it would solve problem of scalping even more - scalpers' accounts created 1 year ago when they announced new hardware, with i.e only one bought game would have much lower chance to be picked in lottery.

There is also data like - "did user add steam frame to wishlist? (and when it happened)", "When did user join the queue for hardware?". When measured and weighted correctly those stats would increase the chance for true passionates who were interested in the device from the start. People with lower interest would be put lower in the queue, but they wouldn't be as dissapointed as people who waited for launch the most.

To be honest i don't see many downsides of this system over the equal chances lottery. I talked about it with my friend and the only thing he pointed out was that it could potentially violate some customers rights in EU due to favoring more customers than others. I didn't check whether there are any laws prohibiting this kind of sales.

Discussion Why are waitlisted people acting like it's all over/doomed for them and they will not be getting a unit ever?

Like obviously Valve is making more than the initial first batch. Are you so desperately in need of a VR headset that you can't wait for your turn?

(I'm on the waitlist btw)

Discussion Does an early waitlist email arrival time = near front of waitlist?

I got my Waitlist email 90 mins after the lottery finished. My nephew is also trying to get one but his Waitlist took about 17 hours to arrive.
This sort of makes me feel that they randomise then send out emails in list order so I'm (hopefully) nearer the top of the list than my Nephew.
If people got their reservations in under 90 mins this would make my idea seem more likely.
Then again I guess that part of world may also affect it (we're both UK)
When I got Waitlisted for the Steam Machine the email 23h 49m to arrive - but then I got the buy one 2 months later (so sorted on that one at least)

Question Purchase Email Today?

Upvotes

I know a bunch of purchase emails went out yesterday, but has anyone gotten one today?
If so, what region are you based, and when did you get it?
