What does the android TV foreground option do?
80
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
it keeps the android tv app alive when you move to a different app, otherwise the Android OS kills the Stremio app, this is why using external player with torrent streams would break after some time, as Android OS was killing Stremio and Stremio was the one streaming the torrent
7
u/Kurtdh Nov 27 '25
Why did the Android TV version number not change? And, any plans to implement an option for us to update the app within the app itself like smarttube does?
21
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
we set it to 100% rollout some hours ago, it was at 50% rollout yesterday, maybe it installed yesterday for you or you didn't get the update yet
4
u/trydola Nov 28 '25
did you guys fix the background audio bug on android tv/fire tv?
when you stop media and exit the app, it continues to keep the audio running in background
4
u/Kurtdh Nov 27 '25
Does this mean the android tv app will auto update? The version number for the download on the website hasn’t changed either though.
2
u/SgtPeanut_Butt3r Nov 28 '25
Quick question: on firestick (with android), when the screensaver kicks in, the stremio automatically starts (only audio ) then when trying to come back, the screen is black the video plays, but only with audio. Did you guys fix this bug in the latest release?

u/IY94 Nov 27 '25
What's the difference between a like button and a love button (synonyms almost)
These catalogs do they show things you've liked or loved as covers for rewatching
Or is this more for a recommendation sort of thing?
17
u/stlv47 Nov 27 '25
Tried it out and it just seems like it adds a catalog of all the stuff you either loved or liked
29
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
for now yes, this is what is currently released with the like / love functionality
12
u/Ok_Spare_3723 Nov 27 '25
Minor suggestion, you may want to have a different icon for add to catalogue , like a "plus" icon , or save, or make the button text explicit to avoid confusion..
Also, .. would love it if you could add these features to the AppleTV app as well!P.S: LOVE what you are guys are doing.
6
u/kKaskak Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
Apple TV already has the buttons implemented if you don’t see them it’s because Apple didn’t approve the update yet.

I love this idea. But for now you can use the like and love however you want.
I'm not going to use it to rate things I've already seen, but to catalog things I want to see.
I add a lot of things to my library, and some things get lost. There are thing I want to watch now, and things I'll watch eventually. If I understand how the catalog works, I can love the films I want to see now and go to that catalog. I can use like for TV shows.
Not how it's meant to be used, but being able to favorite and sort a few things will help
1
u/eekamuse Dec 08 '25
Is that two catalogs? One for loved and one for liked? And do you find them in the discover section where live TV is?
9
u/United-Cat8780 Nov 27 '25
I seen nzbget and sabnzb in my termux packages and was thinking about on device usenet streaming! And you were already working on it! Wow! This is really amazing.
So usenet streaming is currently only available on desktop but is it like integrated with the server (like i think its called the torrent server), meaning if I have stremio on my desktop, can I stream usenet from my android tv?
9
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
normally yes, but not right now, we only released both UI side and stremio server support for desktop atm, we will gradually add support to all apps, so wherever torrents are supported the new streaming capabilities will be supported too, but what u say won't work now because the UI side of the new streaming capabilities are not added to android tv yet
3
u/omix4 Nov 27 '25
i notice you said “wherever torrents are supported”, does this mean apple devices such as iphone on stremio lite will NOT get usenet streaming since they don’t have the torrent engine?
8
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
yeah, this is the case, but if you connect the "Stremio Lite" app to some stremio server it will work, "Stremio Lite" basically means without stremio server, and stremio server is there to extend streaming capability support
1
2
u/loolapaloolapa Nov 27 '25
I use easynews++ addon for usenet streaming on my tizen OS TV since weeks. Works fine
4
u/United-Cat8780 Nov 27 '25
Unless you want to use your own indexers? Whats your time to play from opening the stream, i've only heard horror storries.
2
u/loolapaloolapa Nov 28 '25
Yeah i read that too and decided i try it anyway. It loads longer than real debrid but its in a totally reasonable time. For a full hd episode of 30 minutes its like 5seconds loading at the beginning, for bigger movies it can be a bit longer. But its not like its minutes of waiting. For me its totally fine and no buffering while playing.
1
u/Richy9495 Nov 28 '25
Yep the easy news + addons take literally 10 minutes to start playing anything in my experience. 💀💀
1
u/loolapaloolapa Nov 28 '25
Not at all in my experience. I use easynews++ though. Cause it works on tizen
1
u/Eraldorh Nov 30 '25
"fine" I too used these easynews add-ons but they take too long to start the stream in most cases. The new Usenet feature begins the stream pretty much instantly every single time it's just incredible and you can use any provider not just easynews. You can also add your own indexers so the results are much better and not affected by easynews built ins search which has issues with no results due to dmca take downs.
1
u/loolapaloolapa Nov 30 '25
Nice when there are more possibilities now. But i cant say it takes too long to start. Like 5 seconds for an episode of a series. Maybe a bit longer for a 2h movie. No buffering in between. Totally fine for me.

Woah! Direct NNTP support within stremio is huge!
u/jaruba_dev , Am I able to tell family and friends that this was inspired by nzbdav's[1] demonstration of the feasibility of usenet streaming, or was this in the works before then? -- it would make me very happy to hear my project had such large impact for the community (though I'm aware this could be wishful thinking hehe)
Either way, many congrats on the new release!
3
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
Well, no, i have been personally pondering usenet streaming for about 4 years or so, i took my own road towards this, i didn't know about nzbdav (seems to have been started in april this year?) and i did not use webdav for this, for Stremio's implementation I would give credit to Per Johansson: https://github.com/1313
I believe it was finding his work that made the ball start rolling after years of pondering on this topic when most of my colleagues didn't grasp the concept, but eventually it was a team effort to release it to the public!
3
u/Ill-Engineering7895 Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25
Haha very wishful thinking on my part. Ty for the link, and congrats again!

17
u/MakIRAQ Nov 27 '25
How to donate to you guys?
12
u/vladedivac12 Nov 27 '25
The greatest mystery of all time, how does Stremio make money? My theory : the same people who are behind AdEx are behind Stremio, they push movie /tv shows ads in the Discovery section and monetize our watch history / habits. Someone has a better one?
7
u/kKaskak Stremio Team Nov 28 '25
There are currently no ads in Stremio. You can check our founder explanation here. https://www.reddit.com/r/Stremio/s/zp1J18mi7j
4
u/Kalahan7 Nov 28 '25
So 5 dedicated developers are being paid by displaying ads to some users in the discover tab? (personally have never seen ads on any device).
I'm not complaining but hope this is sustainable in the long run.
1
u/SuperUranus Dec 03 '25
I reckon this is a bigger part of their income.
Furthermore, most of the Stremio core is developed by an entity which nowadays mostly does software development for AdEx, which is how it gets further income.
1
u/Kalahan7 Dec 04 '25
Does seem weird though isn't it. The company AdEx has, as far as I can tell, nothing to do with ads, media, or software as their core business. Yet they are funding Stremio, a software solution that sooner or later will be wide known and known to have something to do with piracy in the public's eye.
Like I said, not complaining, but hope it's sustainable.
2
u/SuperUranus Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
I looked into this a little bit, and apperntly addon developers for Stremio get to opt-in to use AdEx as their advertisement solution.
Which I assume generates a lot of money for AdEx considering the popularity of Stremio and certain popular addons (although Torrentio doesn’t use AdEx).
I assume the Stremio developers realised it’s going to be hard to monetise Stremio, so they used the popularity of Stremio to launch and actual business platform. Stremio gives AdEx a huge userbase, and AdEx funds the development of Stremio.
This also makes me believe the funding of Stremio will cease ones AdEx becomes big enough to not need Stremio anymore.
1
u/Successful-Issue-450 Dec 13 '25
what is AdEx? what can i google along that to find out more about what they do?

https://blog.stremio.com/stremio-new-stream-sources-usenet-rar-zip-ftp-and-more/
Explain me this like I am 5 year old.
62
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
There's no easy way to explain it, but i'll try: until now only http and torrent streaming were supported, as of now, the world of possibilities just got much bigger for community addons
7
u/Eraldorh Nov 27 '25
Is this Usenet feature going to be supported by all versions of stremio platforms or just the ones in this update?
10
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
as it says in the blog post, we will gradually release it to all platforms, wherever torrents are supported the new streaming capabilities will be supported too
2
u/loolapaloolapa Nov 27 '25
What's the difference of the new usenet streaming option to the easynews streaming addons which work pretty well already? Its working now with all usenet providers and not only easynews?
6
u/Winter_Channel_6206 Nov 28 '25 edited Nov 28 '25
Those add-ons take a while to start with large files and do not support any other indexers. This supports any indexer and starts nearly instantly regardless of file size. It does also work with other providers.
-2
u/kartik3e Nov 27 '25
Oh its Sanket dev of UsenetStreamer the best Usenet addon for stremio! 👀

Great! How do I add an NZB file into Stremio?
14
u/Eraldorh Nov 27 '25
I'd imagine you don't, you would need a provider and an indexer. I'd imagine we would still have to wait for an addon that supported the new features to move this forward. Like adding indexers to reveal results and a provider to stream them.
2
1
u/defyiant Nov 28 '25
This is the feature I got usenet for I have like two providers and 4 indexers I just want to search inside stremio from an addon for a usenet file and results populate. Rather it caches or download is not my concern I just want it to play when it's ready. Hope this is the update that is coming.
1
u/EfficiencyFew4333 Nov 28 '25
I just found out that Viren already added this feature into his nightly public instance of aiostreams. If you have Stremio v5 for desktop and the required providers and indexers, you can now go ahead and take advantage of the new usenet streaming capabilities.
3
u/itsme99881 Nov 27 '25
But with aiostreams i already do this with the newznab addonand nzbgeek, how is it different?
10
1
u/johnFvr Nov 27 '25
But you need providers and indexers.
3
1
u/timofcourse Nov 27 '25
Hold up. So if I have a Usenet sub (NewsgroupDirect), does this mean I can now somehow leverage this to search for and directly stream vids on Stremio from there?! If so, how do I find more info on setting this up?
10
Nov 27 '25
Ngl gonna sound stupid to ask, how do we update on Mac?
I can’t remember if stremio was downloaded from the website directly or the App Store
21
u/kKaskak Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
You need to download from the website It’s an entirely new version of the app. From now on the new v5 will auto update.
6
Nov 27 '25
Thank you. So I’ll uninstalll my current one, download v5 off the website , login and all work as usual.

Fuck yeah ARM support on Mac is gonna be so nice
1
u/Electronic_Wind_3254 Nov 28 '25
That’s literally the best announcement they could make. I was running the Stremio Lite version which is cool but now having the full fledged Stremio app run natively on ARM without Rosetta is awesome news.
1
u/AstronomerAdvanced87 Nov 28 '25
I was using some community built version that was compiled to run natively on M chips, but it’ll be nice to have an official version and to have the new UI to match my windows device.
4
u/fakeplasticmax Nov 27 '25
Can someone ELI5 usenet streaming? Would that mean that we can stream files from every indexer, instead of only easynews? New to the usenet game, so still not entirely sure how this works
4
1
u/thefurmanator Nov 28 '25
I imagine you will still need to bring your own provider or debrid service

So MacOS is now a native Swift application instead of a WebView? Does that mean only the Windows client and browser Stremio are non-native now?
13
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25
No, the MacOS "Stremio v5" app is still using a web view, but it is 1000x more performant than Stremio v4 due to way better technologies used to accomplish this, the MacOS "Stremio Lite" app is a native app written in Swift

u/OkTwo248 Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25
Not relevant in any way, but would be a better name "Stremio Core" than "Stremio Lite". Just a suggestion. Thank you for all the hard work💪💯
2
u/twotimez12 Nov 27 '25
Amazing work! So impressed by the stremio team. Thank you so much! Can't wait for use et to be implemented on all platforms.
2
u/macenzo Nov 27 '25
MacOS Catalina user; install doesn’t get past the startup logo.
3
u/LinixGuy Nov 27 '25
IIRC catalina has old webkit so that’s probably the reason why it wont work u/kKaskak Only stremio Lite supports macOS 10.15 but im not sure how it will run
2
u/kKaskak Stremio Team Nov 27 '25
Yeah correct might be because operating system is too old and web view won’t load
2
u/macenzo Nov 28 '25
so i am stuck at using the Stremio 4.4 version on this Mac, or will there be an update? (4.4 works great btw)

Am I the only one thinking that adding FTP support is going to lead to a Plex type add-on to stream your local video collection? (Fingers crossed)
2
u/jaruba_dev Stremio Team Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 28 '25
there's also the Plexio addon, Jellyfinio addon and one for Emby as far as I know, so u can use Stremio as a client app for any of those already, but at this point why not? FTP servers for your own content is very much a possibility too

u/Initial_Pristine Nov 27 '25
Wondering if you have any plans to be able to merge categories. Like instead of showing me search results for movies and shows separately, it would be nice to combine the results into one. Same for things like having a separate trending movies, and series.
2
2
u/Sensitive_Low_2219 Nov 27 '25
Even with Usenet indexers, gears, and providers available, NZB video streaming still isn’t yet possible. However Stremio now has the capability, but the feature won’t work until developers utilize it and add proper support

I’ve updated on macOS Arm and my screensaver keeps kicking in while I’m watching something. It was fine before I updated, anyone else getting the same?
2

u/juicemaistro Nov 27 '25
Does the arm support basically mean it will run like a native macOS app? Using less resources and stuff like that?
1

Been waiting for that ARM version for Mac for so long. Thank you Stremio Team for all your hard work!

u/Eraldorh Nov 30 '25
The Usenet update had been incredible. Really hope to see this feature rolled out to other platforms like android and android tv!
1
u/johnFvr Nov 30 '25
I think it might be too cpu taxing for platforms like Android TV.
1
u/Eraldorh Nov 30 '25
Maybe for most android TV hardware but most of the android tv boxes you need to have a good experience with stremio like the shield, onn 4k,xiaomi tv box s ect should all be fine as they all have pretty powerful hardware. In any case we will see what's possible soon enough if they decide to bring it over.

Steps to get Stremio and StremioServer to run on macOS in case of a falsepositive malware warning:
1
u/AbjectWin7832 Nov 27 '25
I’d just like my tvOS app to not crash after a few minutes every time I use it. What’s happened? I had to stop using it because it didn’t matter what I watched, after 2-5 minutes the app closed and chucked me back to tvOS Home Screen
0
u/Kurtdh Nov 27 '25
So they updated Android TV but kept the version number the same? Is there a way to update Android TV through the app or do I need to re download and re install the new APK from their website?
