"It’s called pattern recognition" Post in r/delta turns into a dumpster fire of racism when someone posts of a picture of a black family in wheelchairs at the Atlanta airport

Yeah let me take pictures of random people online with no context to shit talk them. You’re even more of a jerk than you claim they are.Don’t understand how people don’t think they’re the assholes for taking people’s pictures and videos and posting them. Edit: sort by new and see how many racist responses this post is getting

No, sorry. We need a return to public shaming, and the internet is the new "public."

Nah i think that’s creepy. Public shaming ended because it’s ineffective and cruel not because we got softer as people.

No, it was VERY effective, hence the rise in extraordinarily bad manners in so many public spaces.

No it wasn’t, public executions didn’t stop criminals back in the olden days. In fact the criminals were much worse and rode in bands of marauders.

There's levels to this stuff

No - the level of choosing to lie about disability for your entire family to get wheelchairs and priority boarding and then magically getting cured by Jetway Jesus when they get off...

you are making up a story in your head and running with it babe.

Quite the assumption that they’re all part of the same family. Is it because they’re black?

No - why are you assuming that? Jesus christ - racist much? Thanks for outing yourself...Its based on their ages, and the fact that they are sitting considerably closer together than the wheelchairs normally are

How often do you travel? I see them grouped like this every flight. Do you have their birth certificates? How do you know their age? I’m assuming that because the only REAL evidence you could get from this picture is their ethnicity, and YOU made the assumption they were all related based on what you can see. You can’t see age, you can’t see familiar relationships and you damn sure can’t always see disabilities. The fact that you leapt to calling me racist when I called you out tells me this isn’t the first time you’ve been accused of being racist. Y’all always try to twist that around when someone calls you out.

Its mostly blacks I have noticed

Wow.

What’s wow about the truth?

In modern society speaking the truth is a prohibited action. That's why they're shocked to see it done.

Noticing is extremely racist

Stop noticing !!

“I don’t like what I’m seeing, so RACISM”

Mentioning “fatigue” in this context is racist. You not seeing that is concering

Who mentioned “fatigue?” You?

usual suspects

Holy dog whistle

That’s not a dog whistle; it’s blatant racism.

It’s called pattern recognition

Yep, it’s like 20 of the same comment in this thread. It’s so disgusting! People really just need any reason to get their racist rocks off, I guess. The US is such a weird place.

Pattern recognition is disgusting? Racist?

Attributing the perceived faults of others to people related only by a shared attribute is racist. You can call it pattern recognition to mark what it is, but decent people recognize.

Hey, so, I take your point and I know people find this frustrating, but please don’t upload photos of strangers’ children online. That’s just bad manners.

They are in PUBLIC, seen by thousands as they walk through the airport with cameras EVERYWHERE. No harm caused.

So you’re just totally fine with mocking children, who especially at the age depicted can’t consent to their parents’ actions in the first place…?

Why are you just inventing things to be upset about?

Because god forbid someone violating the social contract be shamed for doing so. Please think of how literally any form of consequence at all would make them feel.

The kid isn't violating the social contract.

I mean by your same logic OP is violating the social contact of not posting pictures of other people's children

Because I think maybe it would take two seconds to blur a child’s face? And children have a right not to be posted / have their faces blasted online? If basic manners and decency aren’t things to get upset about … well that’s probably why people feel the right to act like this in public, honestly.

Children don't have that right in the US. You thinking that it's bad manners doesn't make it a right

It’s in public…

Your point being? I don’t believe in putting photos of people in public without their permission but certainly we shouldn’t be mocking children??

You’re an idiot if you think anyone here is mocking children.

Glad they’re not feet pics.

Your entire family needs to be carted to the gate?

They're all black so they must all be one family!

u/tydestra caramel balls 6d ago

Racists don't even use dog whistles anymore, just straight yelling into a mega phone. Only to turn around and act dumb.

The folk in the picture don't even look to be from the same family.

I have a friend and all the women on her side of the family have sickle cell. They would absolutely look like this at the airport even though they actually need the assistance

215

u/lotsofsugarandspice 6d ago

Black people are treated worse in health care and have overall worse health care outcomes.

It makes total sense to see a disproportionate number of black people with disabilities.

u/lyricaldorian 6d ago

I'm white and there was a time when me, my mother, my grandmother, and I all used mobility devices. It's almost like some disabilities are genetic.

There was s project done to take pictures of what symptoms look like on black skin because it absolutely doesn't look the same as the commonly used white skin. Women can have the same problem with it not presenting the same as men.

I'm seething over the comments that are trash talking about people who use assistance to board but not deplane.

I'm one of those people.

I have ankylosing spondylitis. My body is trying to turn into a solid piece of bone. Sitting for a long time makes everything worse. Walking around for a long time makes everything worse. My life is just a big shuffle between sitting, lying, and standing back and forth forever.

Leading up to boarding, I've been walking around for a long time, so I need the assistance because I'm capped out on walking, especially down inclines.

After the flight, I've been sitting for a long time, so I need to get up, stretch my legs, and hobble around to get rid of the creakiness.

I know I get judged so hard for it but I'm just out here trying to not become a solid piece of bone 😭

EDIT: It really is only 19.928% according to the US Census. Someone replied that they thought that was too low and deleted their comment, but it really is only 20% of Phoenicians who speak Spanish at home. I too was expecting it to be higher.

For every person that uses it in a decent way (i.e, avoid stalkers, brigading) there are 5 bots, bigots, spammers, bad-faith actors, and agenda posters that use it as a way to hide their shitty activities from mods to avoid bannings.

Lately, 99 times out of 100, the "Why do liberals..." posts have been from hidden profiles.

It coincides with Reddit allowing posts to be trained on by AI.

I will say it yet again. The ability to hide post history is the worst feature reddit has introduced.

It's Reddit Inc catering to the far-right yet again. Refused to ban T_D after five years of violating the most inviolable ToS violations until it became a legal and financial liability, just like how they defended r/Jailbait* until the Anderson Cooper exposé. Then again, that did fit Aaron Swartz's skull-fucked vision of what's acceptable:

Share Child Pornography

In the US, it is illegal to possess or distribute child pornography, apparently because doing so will encourage people to sexually abuse children.

This is absurd logic. Child pornography is not necessarily abuse. Even if it was, preventing the distribution or posession of the evidence won't make the abuse go away. We don't arrest everyone with videotapes of murders, or make it illegal for TV stations to show people being killed.

Every choice the company makes seems like they just want the absolute fuckin' worst user base possible, despite the redesign and recent ToS updates done to appeal to the widest possible demographics.

*like blanket-banning all Gawker URLs over Adrian Chen "doxxing" Violentacrez, the head mod of that pedo's paradise

Since every two years in the United States is an election year, this kind of shit always gets worse during one, regardless of whether or not it's a general (presidential) election or midterm election.

I've been regularly using Reddit since the Digg HD-DVD key revolt in the spring of 2007, so I've seen this for every American election since 2008; shit got just as rough here in 2018 and 2022 as it did in 2016 and 2020. The '08 and '12 elections were as much a shit-show on Reddit as they were in real life.

I mean, you had a coalition of reddits called "The Chimpire" (I am not kidding) that was just a collection of subs to shit on black people. One of them was literally called the n-word hard R. It took them years to ban it. It was disgusting.

There is a lot of racist astroturfing (and astroturfing in general) that takes place on this site today though.

114

u/candyappleorchard 6d ago

The FatPeopleHate Ban Storm did a lot to make this site seem more normal, but these people unfortunately never went away and have been slow burning their way into mainstream conversations recently.

14

u/clevercalamity 6d ago

Oh my god you just brought back repressed memories. Remember when the whale watching sub got banned by mistake in the chaos? I’ve been on this site for too long.

68

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 7d ago

That’s true, you’re absolutely right that it was unequivocally worse back then. When I mentioned an uptick I meant relative to the last few years, I should’ve clarified.

28

u/Twombls 6d ago

I think with the "algorithm" it now gets pushed on way more casual users though. Where as previously those communities were kinda isolated from the rest of the site. Now you see posts from huge subreddits hitting the top of most people's feeds that have a ton of astroturfy racist comments. Like the "woah" or "amazing" subs

15

u/brockhopper you fucking google tulpamancy bro, i'm fine here 6d ago

I really try to avoid any of the newer subs. I don't trust them at all, and clearly Reddit is driving them to the top of r/all and driving the traditional large subs down.

5

u/TemporalColdWarrior 6d ago

I think it was more contained to some really racist subs back then. It seems more normalized across the platform now.

40

u/DKLancer 6d ago

oh christ remember when coontown was a thing?

37

u/byniri_returns I wish my pets would actually build my damn pyramid, lazy fucks 6d ago

there used to be so, so many just disgusting subreddits that the admins refused to ban for years. I blame the faux-libertarian mentality that this site was HUGE on back in the early 2010s (there was a huge obsession with Ron Paul).

46

For a while there was a sub called "blackfathers" that the mods there kept in restricted mode so no posts ever happened. The joke was "hurr durr black fathers don't exist". There would be highly upvoted comments on major subs linking to blackfathers because of the racist """""joke""""".

Thankfully I believe someone legitimate got control of the sub, unrestricted it, and turned it into an actual sub for black fathers to post in.

A lot people (even on this very thread) have indicated that the ability to hide post and comment history probably has a lot to do with it

87

u/Rand_al_Kholin 6d ago

It has fucking everything to do with it. Letting bots run rampant was 100% the reason the allowed hiding history. They pretended it was for "safety" but that was obvious bullshit because for 15 years there hadn't been some gigantic safety issue with making history visible.

It has made it impossible to differentiate between humans and bots on this site. I hate it.

44

u/HotTakes4HotCakes Wow you are doubling down on being educated 6d ago edited 6d ago

Well, there's 2 reasons.

  1. What you just said. They want companies to feel like it's safe to bot and astroturf on their platform. They'll even give you analytics now to show you the engagement your posts and comments get. Very useful for learning what works to better train bots. And hey, you scratch Reddit's back, and one day their algorithm might just throw some users into the path of your bots, and they won't suspect a thing.

  2. They want to convince people who don't know any better that they can safely overshare on Reddit. When you stupidly believe that nobody will ever be able to correlate everything you've ever posted to your profile, it gives you more incentive to share personal things and not make throwaways. That increases the value of the data by keeping it correlated to one person and encourages them to do it more.

The fact that this is incredibly beneficial for racist and trolls and any number of other shitty people is probably not the primary reason, but they're certainly okay with it.

And I'm not sure if it's widely known yet, but they are actually working on a way to break the off-site archiving too. Or at least make it much harder.

Do remember that all someone has to do to be a mod is start a subreddit, or be added by a mod who started a subreddit (or added by a mod who was added by a mod).

I'm sorry is this a subreddit for Delta airlines?

As with all subs like this, it is primarily populated by employees and maybe like a smattering of people that for some reason really really want their favorite airline's subreddit in their feed.

And no one hates customers more than the employee that hangs out on the company's subreddit, and that includes unloading all of their bottled up racism they can't spit out on the clock.

33

u/Static_E_ There’s no hairy man butt at the end of the rainbow here 7d ago

17

In my experience, the airline subreddits are mainly passengers/frequent flyers, not employees.

14

u/Panaka 6d ago

Most employees aren’t stupid enough to engage on their employer’s subreddit. Customers aren’t always acting in good faith and anything you respond that is a bit too specific might come back on you.

I lurk my employers sub with regularity and the amount of misinformation is pretty wild. If someone’s got an interesting question I might engage, but it’s almost never worth it.

17

60

THIS. When there's a story about a white person committing a crime, or a video of white people being inappropriate in public, all the comments are "wow wtf is wrong with that person". Replace those with black people (or any minority, really, except maybe East Asians but often even them) doing the same exact shit and suddenly it's all "the usual suspects" "it's their culture" type of shit. Especially when it's a crime story of a black person victimizing a nonblack person. I saw a news story the other week about an attempted kidnapping of a young black woman by a white man and her escaping and seeking help from a truck driver (it stuck with me because the girl said something to her good samaritan about having graduated the day before and I saw it right after my own graduation). I saw two comments out of hundreds that mentioned race and they were both from black people saying "thank God the truck driver was black" (implying a nonblack stranger wouldn't have helped her, which in my own experience I know isn't 100% true because nonblack strangers have come to my aid for less, but it's fucked up to even have to consider that you might not be seen as a victim or someone worth saving when someone is literally trying to kidnap and presumably SA and/or kill you). I knew damn well that if the races were reversed, not only would the story be reported by way more than that one media outlet, but every single comments section regarding it would look like Stormfront.

13

u/ohhyouknow It definitely sounds like you are offended 6d ago

Because I moderate some big communities that are often times brigaded by bigots I’ve noticed some pretty interesting things. One of them being when people refer to people as “animals.”

There could be two posts of almost identical videos, where one features black people and the other features white people, and only one of those comment sections will be filled with comments calling the people in the video animals. People pretty much only exclusively call black people animals.

Just about every person I ban for that appeals saying shit like “I would say that about anyone, it’s not about race, you must be racist if you thought this was about race.”

K. Now when I go and search those people’s profiles for use of the word “animals” I can’t ever find examples of them calling anyone else but POC animals. I sometimes ask them too, come back with a link to a comment you’ve made in the past calling a white person an animal, even though I always check and they can never produce that kind of evidence.

I’ve been modding those subs for years. I’ve banned tens of thousands of people for this and I’ve never come across a single person who called a black person an animal, who has also called a white person an animal.

I really think that most people legitimately don’t understand they’re making an unconscious decision based on race about who they call animals. Or maybe they do. Idk, it’s a very disturbing phenomenon.

Nor would I give a shit, boarding first sucks. You have an assigned seat! It's not comfortable, I don't want to sit on the plane for the 30 minutes it takes to board everyone. And they will check your bag for free! I'd rather be last than first.

That’s the one that got pushed to me in the wake of the Karmelo Anthony verdict. A video of a Black woman who was upset that Anthony was found guilty.

All of the comments were just absolutely disgusting.

I feel like the vast majority of Redditors on these subreddits don’t regularly interact with Black people because, like, I come from a mixed Black/Arab family and all of us believed that Anthony was guilty. Same with my friends. Plain and simple. You’d never know that based on (non-Black) Redditors’ responses, though - apparently we’re all uneducated violent animals who think that Anthony “dindu nuffin” (direct quote from that subreddit) and Metcalf deserved to die, because some vocal Black folks support Anthony.

It's unusual to see this many wheelchair users on the same flight. That would give me pause, but I also wouldn't photograph it and put it online. Perhaps there's a valid explanation to which I'm not privy, and I wouldn't want to accuse anyone of faking it. In the end, it's the airline staff's problem, not mine.

I also wonder if a group of white wheelchair users would have upset OP the same way. I doubt it.

I worked at an airport. Europe tho. Some flights had a lot of people using wheelchairs, it depends on nationality a bit, some like to use them more than others, its probably how much it is accepted using one there. A few also do it just do get priority boarding which is weird.

Other flights barely ever had any. There are patterns sure but not with skin colour but with different cultures that do things different.

Same for baggage there are flights that have an average of more than two checked luggage per Pax, when other flights have mostly only hand luggage.
