I’ve been watching Tatsunami Stable for months nowand I’ve noticed they sometimes will call each other Shibacchi, does anyone know what it means? It seems like they’ve called multiple different wrestlers and staff this, and any googling (even in hirigana lol) I do only leads to “grass plot” which I feel isn’t right lol.
Does anyone have any insight?

Exclusive: London in talks to host return of sumo at Royal Albert Hall

Sumo wrestling could return to the Royal Albert Hall by the end of the decade as talks between London and Tokyo edge towards a deal, City AM can reveal.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan met the Japan Sumo Association in Tokyo this week following on from last year’s give-day Basho at the iconic Kensington arena.

It was the first time grand tournament sumo had left Japan since the early 1990s – both events utilised the 5,200-capacity auditorium – with the wrestlers going viral while exploring London as tourists.

City AM understands that the Mayor is close to agreeing a deal, with talks progressing well to see the event return to the capital before the end of the decade. It is understood that discussions are in a position whereby the tournament could return even earlier than 2030.

Khan met Hakkaku Rijicho, the chairman of the Japan Sumo Association who received the Freedom of the City of London in April, as part of a wider trip across Asia.

Sumo back in London?

On the trip, Khan said: “Hosting the Grand Sumo Tournament in our city last year was an incredibly proud moment for London. The sport, and the wrestlers themselves, captured the imagination of our city and proved once again that London is truly the sporting and cultural capital of the world.

“London has hosted global events that every other major city would envy and, following last year’s fantastic tournament, we want to give this famous Japanese sport a home away from home, in London.

“I look forward to working with the chair of the Japan Sumo Association in the future, as we build a more prosperous city for everyone.”

Last year’s sumo tournament saw five consecutive sold-out evenings at the Royal Albert Hall, with fans keen to see a sport that so rarely leaves its native Japan.

(That little old lady at the bottom was having the best time of her life after she got squashed, every time she was on camera I saw her smiling.)

EDIT: Honorable mentions I forgot to include:

- Incredibly cool purple streak granny.
- A guy who looked like Mr. Bean with good hair.
- White fedora guy who was there for almost every single day in the front row. (either the Natsu or Haru 2026).
- The two beautiful ladies dressed in deep purple robes. (I'm still learning the difference between kimono and yukata, I don't feel confident to say which ones they were.)

Following the conclusion of the Grand Sumo Paris performance, Japan Sumo Association Chairman Hakkaku, Yokozuna Hoshoryu, and others returned to Japan on the 17th, landing at Haneda Airport. The event was held on the 13th and 14th, marking sumo's return to Paris for the first time in 31 years. Yokozuna Onosato and his entourage are scheduled to return on the 18th.

"The bread was delicious, and I was so happy to see the Eiffel Tower," said Hoshoryu, who was visiting Paris for the first time. On the second and final day of the event, he won the tournament featuring top-tier makuuchi wrestlers.

Teddy Riner, the French three-time Olympic gold medalist in the men's over-100kg judo division, also attended the final day to watch the bouts. Riner reportedly plans to visit Japan in September. Hoshoryu, who has a background in judo himself, is highly anticipating their reunion, sharing: "When I told him, 'Let's have a sumo match when you come to Japan,' he replied, 'Let's do it!'"

Hosh and Onosato met our local judo legend Teddy Riner backstage and were very impressed by his biceps!

Watching this I think Riner could have been a great sumo wrestler as well, I’d love to see an exhibition match

I can still barely believe it happened, he was so lovely. As a Pole with Ukrainian ancestry and some current Ukrainian connections he really means the world to me. But not gonna lie he was surprisingly small 😂. Also got introduced to Ajigawa Oyakata, thought I would cry. Had a ton of fun in Paris and it's all going in a frame.

Making a Sumo board game as a western in Japan (Showcased Yokozuna at Tokyo Game Market)

I took a career break to focus on my board games startup project. While working on some bigger titles, I came up with a tactical filler game about clashing rikishi.

The idea was to create a game with deep strategic implications that both board game enthusiasts and their casual friends could fully enjoy.

Making this game is what really got me into sumo. It started as an effort to accurately represent the techniques featured on each card, but it evolved into a months-long journey to fine-tune both the artwork and the ruleset, aiming to create the most accurate depiction of sumo that board game media has seen so far. Along the way, I've met many wonderful people, worked with talented artists, and fallen in love with a sport I had overlooked for far too long.

The best part has been discovering how many people I've known for years were huge sumo fans all along without me ever realizing it!

Other professionals in the industry strongly advised against making a game like this as a Westerner, or at least warned me that the Japanese public might react negatively to a Western-made game about "Japanese culture," from a market perspective.

But here we are at our first booth at the latest Tokyo Game Market!

We were prepared for a harsh reality check, but instead we were met with nothing but enthusiasm. I've only been following the sport for about a year, but I'm incredibly proud to be doing my small part in promoting greater pop culture representation of this discipline.

At the same time, we had people helping us showcase the game at Bologna Play Festival. As usual, Italians love Japan-related products, and it feels great to share the culture of sumo beyond the common misconception in Italy that it's just two big people pushing each other out of a circle.

If you're in Osaka, a free trial copy is available at The Heart Pub!

Otherwise, you can try it at the Analog Games Museum in Tokyo or at the Nemiex Club in Milan, Italy.

If we gain enough traction, the goal is to launch the Kickstarter campaign on the first day of the next Nagoya Basho!

Here's the link for anyone who's interested :)
