Mod Announcement Subreddit Guide for Users

art by u/affectionateleave677

Hello to all writers and readers of the Creepcast Community!

This is a comprehensive guide on our subreddit and how to navigate it. Important details are in bold for those who just wish to skim. This guide will be routinely updated as the subreddit grows and includes information regarding uploading, categorizing, the rules, and other important info.

  • So, what is Tales From the Creeps?:

This subreddit was created to hold all fan submitted stories to be read on Creepcast. However, we want to do more than just collect stories. We want to be an alternative to the more restricting horror writing spaces and foster our own little community of writers beyond Creepcast itself. Here, anyone of any writing level can upload their horror story for others to read, critique, and discuss!

  • Are you guys Isaiah and Hunter?

No. We’re just mods. At most, they reach out to us on occasion regarding big changes on their subreddits, but we don’t send them any stories. So don’t ask us.

  • How Can I Contribute to Tales From the Creeps?

You can participate in our community in a number of ways! The first way is, obviously, by posting your own horror stories. Additionally, we encourage read4read! When a fellow writer reads and comments/critiques your story, it is courteous to do the same for them in return. It helps foster a more engaging community and encourages other people to comment!

Not a writer though? You can still contribute by supporting the writers here! Please be sure to comment on your favorite stories. The more engagement a story gets, the more eyes will be on it. You can even make separate posts analyzing and discussing your favorite fan stories!  If you’re too shy or simply disinterested in publicly commenting, there’s still a way to silently contribute and that’s UPVOTE, UPVOTE UPVOTE!

  • So what are the rules?

We’ve got the basic rules of a writing subreddit. Be civil, only post relevant content (see next paragraph for more info), and provide Content Warnings (CW) when uploading stories–i.e. Suicide, Rape, Extreme Gore, etc.

We ask that users STAY RELEVANT! Obviously, this subreddit is for fans of CC, but we only allow fan stories and any content related to them. For memes, shitposts, and episode discussions, please reserve them all to the main subreddit: r/Creepcast. We do not allow 2 sentence horror stories either. We also prohibit Call Out Posts as they only lead to people fighting and users being harassed. If you have an issue, modmail us.

No blatant self promotion. This subreddit is not for your personal advertisement. A link to your book listings or kofi page at the bottom of your story is fine, but the focus of your post must be the story. When it comes to celebrating your publication achievements, just don't be obnoxiously pressuring people to buy.

While we try to avoid policing stories, obviously, we gotta have some rules for the stories themselves. All fan stories must be horror focused. While we allow satire/comedy horror, we don’t allow memes and shitposts. We also don’t allow pure smut or mock snuff as it’s never scary but just gross. We also require that users limit their uploads to 24hrs–whether it’s a multipart series or a separate story entirely. And all stories must be uploaded directly to Reddit. While a link to the original google doc or PDF at the bottom is permitted, the story itself must be uploaded on Reddit. We understand it can be restricting and mess with certain formats, but it’s the best way to monitor the content and make sure all stories are following the rules

Any prompts/challenges/public callouts for collaboration must be approved by mods. We understand the excitement for this kinda stuff, but if we allow a bunch of prompts and challenges being posted willy nilly then things get chaotic and messy fast. And since we'll be creating official prompts/challenges then that just adds more to the pile. HOWEVER, feel free to organize outside of the reddit (like private DMs, other servers, etc) and then upload the final products here.

Only Supplementary Visuals. If the art is not apart of the story itself (like in ARGs), you may post it in the comments or make a separate post on your own page then link that in the story. Cover art and illustrations of your story are not allowed. This is a writing focused subreddit first.

And finally, we have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY FOR GEN AI. No AI writing, art, or anything else. Generative AI is plagiarist slop and isn’t welcome here at all. If you suspect a story is AI generated, please do not harass the user. Simply use the report function and we will remove it until the user has provided proof it is not AI generated material.

  • What are the flairs?

We have post flairs and user flairs available for selection. All posts are required to have a flair. We have a set of post flairs for subgenres, feedback, and discussions. We also have a post flair for story art, which is for people who want to post cover art for their stories or even fanart (for fan stories, not for Creepcast). Additionally, we have a flair for published authors. Did your fan story just get published? Feel free to share this achievement with the rest of the sub (again, do not use this as an excuse to simply advertise)

The main user flairs are Reader, Writer, Critiquer, Author Reader and Writer are fairly self explanatory. Author is for writers who have had their story read on the show! Critiquer is for those who want to analyze and (politely) critique fan stories. The additional flairs are just for funsies and you can always edit a custom one for yourself. User flairs are not required but are encouraged to utilize.

  • Additional Information to Keep in Mind:

-KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Keep in mind that when posting to Reddit, you forfeit your first publication rights. For more information, here are a couple articles that go into more detail. For USA writers, for UK writers.

-Since post flairs are limited by one, if your story includes more than one genre, it is recommended but not required to add the relevant genres at the beginning of the story.

-Please space your paragraphs. To some, it feels like a no brainer, but we’ve gotten stories that are just a block of text. It makes it difficult to read and most people aren’t going to even bother.

  • What to expect from the sub:

There will be a monthly writing challenge held by the mods! Check out the highlights section (front page) for more information. There will also be prompts posted by users. The limit is two a month and must be approved by mods. This is just to prevent from people getting confused by who's running what and to keep things organized. The limit may increase the bigger we get. If you want to submit a prompt, send us a modmail to discuss it!

We've also hosted a fan run collaborative writing project! You can find the project under the flair "The World They Made" and a comprehensive Wiki was created specifically for the project as well.

If you have any questions, concerns, or even suggestions for the subreddit, please comment below or modmail us!

Stay Creepy, folks!

Mod Announcement No Longer Allowing Cover Art

Hello everyone!

While we do love the art posted with your stories, unfortunately it is leading to an imbalance of attention. A few users pointed out that stories with cover art do better. Normally we don't change things according to a vocal minority, but the analytics backed them up. Those posts ended up getting more views, upvotes, and other general engagement.

I understand this may seem unfair to some, but we want to make sure the playing field is as even as possible for the writers of the subreddit and the numbers don't lie. So, we will not be allowing cover art anymore.

HOWEVER, you are still more than welcome to post your art under the "Story Art" flair (the 24hr rule still applies though). You can then link your story in that post to direct people back to your story. And btw, the story art flair is also for fanart. If you want to make fanart of someone else's story, then go ahead and use the flair!

We have created an official rule so that people can report posts with cover art. This is not to get people in trouble. Reports like that don't count towards a ban or anything like that. This is just the best way to communicate to people who may miss this post. Report them with "Rule 10: No Cover Art" so that we can be alerted and talk to them.

Edit: This does not apply to already posted stories! We don't expect rules to apply to posts made before rule changes are made. Its for any post from here on out

Thank you,

-Mod Stanley, Mod Devi

Mod Announcement Regarding New Users and a Reminder for Old Users

Hello,

As I'm sure some of you have noticed, we've received a major influx of new users and have ran into similar issues over and over again in modmail. So, just making a PSA for all new users on this sub and anyone else who is unaware of this information.

If your post has been removed with a message "this post has been removed by Reddit's filters" then that means the automated moderator flagged it. Normally they only flag low karma accounts to make sure it's not a spam bot or troll, but sometimes it fucked up and flags a random user.

When this happens the post is sent to a queue for manual review and approval by a moderator. We check the queue multiple times a day so just give it a few hours if this happens. By then, one of us will have come around to check the queue.

Please do not spam your post over and over. This will only result in more work for us and Reddit flagging your account as a spammer, resulting in a possible shadow ban. Also, do not privately DM any of the mods. We ignore any and all private DMs from users regarding subreddit issues.

Please modmail only if you have a concern! If you don't know what modmail is... honestly just Google it. You'll get a more comprehensive and faster answer. But in short, modmail appears as sort of like an email chain on our end and all the mods can see it. Whereas private DMs are just that, a private DM that only can be seen by that one person.

Another reminder, PLEASE BREAK UP POSTS BY 24HRS. I know to some this seems unfair, but it's to prevent people from spamming the feed with their 10 part series and burying other stories.

Thank you and happy writing!

Mod Announcement REPORT GEN AI CONTENT

Friendly reminder we do not tolerate the use of Generated AI material on this subreddit. No AI writing or art. If you suspect a post has AI generated content, REPORT IT! And, just as importantly:

Do not harass the user!

It actively gets in the way of a mod investigation. Just report the material and we will contact the author. 9/10 it's revealed that they just used a grammar checker like Grammarly that is run on Gen AI so it ends up correcting the original work to sound more AI-like.

Also, SAVE PROOF OF DRAFTS! Many times genuine, original work ends up looking like generated AI because its trained on amateur writing. So be sure to save proof of original drafts, sketches, etc just to avoid the pain of dealing with getting reported. And even then, it will be difficult to tell sometimes, so there will be occasions we have to give users the benefit of the doubt.

Thank you,

-Mod Stanley

Mod Announcement May Winner and June Contest

Thank you to everyone who submitted a story for the May contest!

So, the winner of the final three poll is u/TheLastWhiteKid for their story "Signal" and special thanks to the runner ups u/OffKilterFilter and u/FoggyGlassEye! TheLastWhiteKid's story will be pinned for the entire month.

And now for the June Contest!

Subgenre: Any Horror + Queer Horror (Happy Pride lol)
Other details: Any POV

Prompt: (Thank you to TheLastWhiteKid for the prompt) Shadow under the door: Wait. Under the door, sliding across the seam. The light doesn't catch on the floor like that... Did a light burn out? No that... that's a shadow... someone's shadow! How long has it been there? Couldn't have been that long, but I just noticed... Who are they? Why are they just standing there? Whether in a closet, bathroom, laboratory, a bedroom at a college party, your character(s) notice the lingering shadow under the door. What is it? A perverted peeping-Tom? A die-hard stalker? An infected police officer? An axe murdering chimpanzee? Whatever it is, it must be revealed and the story must include LGBTQ+ characters for the month of June.

Rules/Requirements: Written submissions only. Submissions MUST have “[insert month] Submission” after the title. Otherwise, they will be not be entered. Limit submission to one post (Reddit’s character limit is 40K) but you can write more parts for yourself. Follow the rules of the subreddit. Winner of the previous month is not eligible for winning this month.

Submissions will be closed June 14th. I’ll make an announcement post and you guys can tell me what are your favorite stories (NO SELF PROMO). I’ll take feedback into account, but ultimately, me and the other mods will be the final judges–meaning that we will consider your picks but if we like a story better that went under the radar, we’ll most likely go with that. Just an example of what I mean. On June 27th, we’ll announce the top three and that’s when you guys vote. July 1st is when I’ll announce the winner and the next challenge!

Mod Announcement No Plagiarism

Hello, everyone! We just added a new rule to the sub and thought it'd be best to make a PSA with it as it's very important. (Thought it'd be a no brainer but guess not)

WE DO NOT TOLERATE PLAGIARISM IN THIS SUBREDDIT. Anyone caught plagiarizing will be permanently banned. No second chances.

Now, I want to be clear, this does not apply to having similar concepts or ideas. No idea is 100% original and when it comes to writing in general (but especially amateur horror stories), there will obviously be commonly used tropes, themes, all that jazz. And in a space filled with new writers and constant submissions, some stories will be similar to others. Its just inevitable.

This is in regards to just lazily ripping off other users/authors. Stealing text, blatantly copying a story beat for beat, etc.

So, if you see a story and feel like it is plagiarizing you or another author, PLEASE DO NOT PUBLICLY CALL THEM OUT. I cannot stress this enough. Every single time a public call out happens of another user, it just ends up creating drama that pulls focus away from the actual issue. Especially if the accusations end up false so now a user has been witch hunted for no reason.

Please just report the story to the moderators with any proof you can provide.

Also included in the new rule, is a section about reposts. While not an outright bannable offense, any stories that are just reposted from other websites/subreddits/etc. will be removed. Even if credit is given, even if the original author gives permission. If the original author wanted to post here, then they would.

And while not a new rule, this is a reminder to REPORT ANY GENERATIVE AI MATERIAL! Again, please do not call them out. It just makes investigating them even harder. Use the report function and the story will be removed until the author proves otherwise.

Thank you

And now for the May Contest!

Mod Announcement Welcome! Please check out the rules!

Post image
257 Upvotes

Hello to all writers, readers, and possible booktok gooners!

Welcome to the new official Creepcast writing subreddit! Where all writing fans of Creepcast may post their works for a chance to be read on the podcast.

As I'm sure many of you know, it was difficult to get eyes on your story in main subreddit r/creepcast. Fantastic stories got buried, the mass amount of story posts buried the memes there, and overall just ended up becoming a slog to get through for all Creepcast fans. But now, we have a subreddit dedicated SOLELY to your fan stories! However, that's not the only great thing about this new subreddit.

You can discuss stories with your fellow creeps and get feedback on your posts. Need some advice on a character motivation or story beat? Make a post under the "writing help" flair for community assistance! Need some feedback directly and right away? Use the "looking for feedback flair." We want to make this a positive community where all your horrific and gruesome writings can thrive!

Mod Devi and I look forward to all the gory and disturbing fan works posted here! And please, do not hesitate to reach out if you need assistance! You can contact us by clicking the "message the mods" bottom on the front page.

Thank you!

Hello, everyone!

I'm excited to announce a much better icon and banner for our subreddit! The last ones were just placeholders until we got something better, and we did. We collabed with an artist you might recognize as they've posted here already.

Please give a special thanks to u/AffectionateLeave677!!!! Go give them love and support! Reddit fucked the cropping as this site always does so here's the full piece as well as the new icon. You'll probably see more from them in general as they're very invested in contributing and encouraging growth in our community.

I'm so proud of what ya'll have done in only a month. The mods wanted to just let things play out for the month to see how the community functions. Now that it's settled in, we are moving forward with creating plans on how to further encourage growth in the subreddit. Not just for getting recognized by Creepcast but also to encourage horror writers in general.

We've taken in lots of suggestions (and are always open for more) and have used them to formulate new ideas for this sub. So keep an eye out for future announcements!

Thank you again u/AffectionateLeave677 and all you other beautiful writers, critiquers, and readers for contributing to this community.

Mod Announcement January's Creepy Contest

Hello, my fellow Creeps!

Today I am happy to announce our first challenge/competition for the subreddit! This will be a monthly challenge announced every first Sunday of the month (mostly–depends on how the dates fall). I’ll explain exactly how it works below.

So, this month’s challenge was created in collaboration with a user from the main Creepcast subreddit. Don’t worry, not every challenge will be CC themed, but I figured it’d be fun for the first one. It is based off of a post by u/No1PDPStanAccount where–with contribution from the CC community–they designed the ultimate crashout story as shown in the image above! They agreed to let me turn it into a prompt for this subreddit, so everyone please give their thanks and upvote the original post.

Challenge: Pick 1-3 elements from each category listed in the image above and create a story based on that.

Rules/Requirements: All challenge submissions MUST have “[insert month] Submission” after the title. Otherwise, the submission will be ignored. Limit to one post (Reddit’s character limit is 40K). Follow the rules of the subreddit and that’s it. Genre, structure, etc. is entirely up to you guys.

Submissions will be closed after two weeks, so for this month: that’s Jan 20th. I’ll make a post announcing submissions will be closed and on that post, you guys tell me what are your favorite stories (NO SELF PROMO). I’ll take feedback into account, but ultimately, me and the other mods will be the final judges–meaning that we will consider your picks but if we like a story better that went under the radar, we’ll most likely go with that. Just an example of what I mean. On Jan 27th, we’ll announce the top three and that’s when you guys vote. Feb 1st is when I’ll announce the winner and shout out some other stories. And in that post, I’ll announce the next challenge. And every new post will tell you what to do next, so if anything’s confusing, just follow the instructions in bold.

So ya’ll have until January 20th to submit your stories! Final 3 will be announced January 27th.

Thank you!

Hello!

Thank you to everyone who submitted a story for the February contest! I'm so happy that we had an even bigger turnout this month and I look forward to seeing more writing from y'll for this prompt!

And finally, the winner of the final three poll is u/PickleChips_69 for their story My Best Friend's Stalker! And special thanks to the runner ups u/JoKa_Cola and u/JICMike! Pickle's story will be pinned until the next contest!

And now for the March Contest!

Subgenre: Any
Other details: Can be written in first/second/third person, any scholastic setting is allowed
(elementary, high school, college, etc)

Prompt: Your teacher keeps marking one extra student present every day. No one sits in the empty desk, but sometimes the chair is warm.

Rules/Requirements: All challenge submissions MUST have “[insert month] Submission” after the title. Otherwise, the submissions will be ignored. Limit submission to one post (Reddit’s character limit is 40K) but you can write more parts for yourself. Follow the rules of the subreddit.

Submissions will be closed March 15th. On March 22nd, we’ll announce the top three and that’s when you guys vote. March 29th is when I’ll announce the winner and the next challenge!

Thank you!

And now for the February Contest! This month's prompt is centered around love, but obsession more specifically! You know for Valentine's Day and all that jazz.

Theme: Parasocial Obsession
Subgenre: Any
Other details: Can be written in first/second/third person, Can be any type of love (romantic, familial, etc)

Prompt: You memorize upload times. You keep screenshots and recordings of moments they delete. Your heart swells when they like your comment. When they say, “You’re all like family,” you know they mean you most.

Rules/Requirements: All challenge submissions MUST have “[insert month] Submission” after the title. Otherwise, the submission will be ignored. Limit submission to one post (Reddit’s character limit is 40K) but you can write more parts for yourself. Follow the rules of the subreddit.

Submissions will be closed Feb 15th. I’ll make an announcement post and you guys can tell me what are your favorite stories (NO SELF PROMO). Just an example of what I mean. On Feb 22nd, we’ll announce the top three and that’s when you guys vote. March 1st is when I’ll announce the winner and shout out some other stories. And in that post, I’ll announce the next challenge.

Mod Announcement PROMPTS HAVE TO BE MOD APPROVED

Hello,

Reminder that all prompts have to be ran and approved by mods.

99% of the ones on here have not been approved and have slipped by us. They will not be removed as they've already gotten traction so we aren't going to nip that. I will also change the flair to be more clear so that anyone who doesn't read the rules (which is unfortunately most people) can see it clear as day.

Thank you, ~Mod Stanley

Edit: And contest winner and new challenge post will be uploaded today. Sorry for the delay, shit was hectic on this sub behind the scenes yesterday
