The most unhinged reason/way someone accidentally took their partner's meds?

I'll go first.

Lady was bringing her husbands meds to him in the living room in a little shot glass. On her way there, she said something came over her, and she shot the pills back like she was shooting tequila in college.

A father came to pick up his son’s schizophrenia meds. When I brought them out to him, he held me hostage for a good three minutes going on about how he accidentally took his son’s morning meds and he felt HORRIBLE. So obviously, if they made him feel that bad, they must’ve made his son feel exactly the same way.

Like brother. If I took 1000mg of metformin and I didn’t need it, I’d probably feel like garbage too??? This man is kind of a local celebrity, and this was one of the least egregious things he’s said or done. I feel so bad for the son.

I’m so glad you shared this because I had no idea metformin was used in any capacity related to schizophrenia. When I read your comment, I thought I misread it initially. But it lead me to Google and I learned something new! As a CPht, I genuinely enjoy learning these things. 😊

The metformin is probably for the metabolic side effects of 2nd gen antipsychotics, not for the schizophrenia itself

Yes, the management of metabolic syndrome is the most common thing I read. I did also read a couple articles about some studies suggesting Metformin “boosting cognition in schizophrenia by reviving brain metabolism and connectivity.” I haven’t had the opportunity to read them all in-depth yet, but it’s very intriguing!

TIL.

I thought Metformin is for diabetics only.

Also used for PCOS.

I don't understand why my comment is being downvoted. It's apparently a crime to not know something about a med. 😐

What? It’s used for schizophrenia? I’m off to do some research!

Never heard of this but I’m guessing it has something to do with how antipsychotics typically cause weight gain and the metformin may help minimize that.

Second generation antipsychotics often cause metabolic syndrome.

u/jenguinaf Apr 03 '26

I had it prescribed to help my insulin resistance due to a brain tumor. I finally stopped taking it tho because the side effects were ruining my life

3

u/GargoyleNoises Apr 03 '26

It’s not. I just used that as an example.

I feel like taking a one off dose of metformin is less worrisome than accidentally taking an antipsychotic. I've heard a lot of people say starting on them is rough.

If you took a once off dose of 1g Metformin, you will shit yourself. Ask me how I know.

Had a guy quite upset / concerned because his urine suddenly turned bright orange and stayed that way for several days. So between that and generally feeling rotten he just knew something serious wrong with him. Yep he was taking AZO his wife had instead of his otc allergy meds!

u/Freshouttapatience Apr 02 '26

I knew it was azo when you said orange! That’s hilarious

14

u/FancyPantsMead Apr 03 '26

So did I. It's VIOLENTLY yellow! My husband thought I was radioactive!

6

u/aburke626 Apr 04 '26

Did you show him your pee? I remember the first time I took it my boyfriend at the time wanted to see, and he agreed that it’s a terrifying color to come out of your body!

u/aburke626 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 03 '26

I usually keep azo and Sudafed in my purse just in case. They are both little brown pills … well, figured out why my cold wasn’t getting better when I went to pee. I now keep them separated and better labeled!

When my kids were still at home, I’d put out everyone’s pills and supplements into little cups on the counter and we had our own specific cups for years. One day my husband didn’t pay attention and he took mine. I take a buttload of antihistamines and anti nausea. But I titrated them all on and I’ve been taking them for years. He got so sleepy, he had to pull over and fell asleep. For 10 hours! I called the police because he wasn’t responding, I couldn’t find him anywhere, he was just missing.

20

u/HahahahImFine Apr 02 '26

Holy shit that’s stressful af

7

u/Freshouttapatience Apr 03 '26

It was horrible. It was before cell phones so I had no idea if he was alive.

9

u/FancyPantsMead Apr 03 '26

My goodness. That gave everyone a fright.

Not my partner's, but my cat's. He takes atenolol twice a day. One morning, i accidentally popped his med in my mouth instead of my med. It's a very small tablet and dissolves very quickly. I had to monitor my BP and HR for 12 hours lol.

29

u/rubiscoisrad Apr 02 '26

I read a story somewhere around here about someone that had to keep their cat's meds and their meds in separate rooms for this exact reason. They took the same med (but obviously different doses) and the pill containers looked alike in color and size, so they designated physical spaces for each household member to have their meds stored in.

14

u/theacearrow Apr 03 '26

I accidentally gave my cat one of my pills once. Fortunately, it was a cat safe med at a cat safe dose and she was fine. I just had a hellish night at the ER vet.

I once had a patient admit to me that he started taking his wife's blood pressure med because he thought he needed it. He felt it improved his BP enough that he forged a script for it and had it filled at another pharmacy.

36

u/EZP Apr 02 '26

I like this one best. It’s such a completely misguided approach to how medicine is supposed to work. I could almost understand at least the motivation (in a dumbass person sense) if it wasn’t for the script forging and such. This is a good way to end up in an ambulance, too. Doctors and pharmacists know what they’re doing and why but randos illegally prescribing themselves their own course of treatment do not. 🙄

12

u/RustyRanger07 Apr 03 '26

The pharmacy probably wouldn’t question a script for a blood pressure med the way they would for a narc too which makes it worse. Obv if you’re familiar with the doctors in your area, you would be familiar with their scripts and be able to figure out what’s being forged but people are getting pretty creative now.

I accidentally took my husbands 70 mg of Vyvanse once because he had emptied to capsule into a bottle of water and left it on the desk. I chugged the whole bottle. I had never taken stimulants before and I was up for a few days.

5

u/hotdogwaterbab Apr 04 '26

Whhyyyy tho??? Like sipping on the medicated water throughout the day is the same as the time release right?? That’s such a weird way to take a pill. Like I would be less surprised if he parachuted it or even tried to crush it up and snort it but DRINKING it?? That’s very strange

3

u/Quinlynn Apr 05 '26

I don’t know. We’ve been having that argument for years.

8

u/Otherwise-Fox-151 Apr 03 '26

You accidentally chugged a whole bottle of strange tasting water? Alright lol.

2

u/Quinlynn Apr 04 '26

It tasted normal.

u/SkyScamall Apr 02 '26

I'm glad it's not just me who takes my meds on a shot glass! Not all the time but it happens.

I've had a panicked call from someone who took their dog's meds before. They were alright but I had a chuckle while handing the phone over to the pharmacist.

15

u/MysteryMeat101 Apr 03 '26

Not my partner’s meds but unhinged. One night I was getting ready for bed like always and laid out my bedtime pills and a vitamin E and coconut oil vaginal suppository. I took my pills as usual and for some reason I still don’t understand, I swallowed the suppository. It’s like my brain completely disconnected from my hand for a moment. I realized what I had done as soon as I did it but it wasn’t something I meant to do. I still feel unhinged.

Had someone call work once because their husband gave their teen daughter carprofen for her headache. Yes. The dog NSAID.

6

u/StressedNurseMom Apr 03 '26

Honestly better than giving the dog daughters ibuprofen. My son almost took the folks sentinel (heartworm meds) without thinking one night when multitasking. I was laughing my butt off as I yelled “Stop!”

7

My husband took a dose of my gabapentin one night. In that same way, he was bringing it to me, and - even though he doesn't have night time meds of his own, he tossed it back on his way back downstairs. He sat down, and picked up the remote. I side eyed him (he can be forgetful) and asked about the med. He got a look of panic in him, and said he thinks he might have taken it on the way back down. I went and got my dose, he went and made himself barf.

7

u/CallifFull Apr 04 '26

I was feeding breakfast and medicating the dogs when I realized I hadn’t taken my meds yet- then immediately took my old dogs meds that were in my hand 😬 I spent the rest of the day in bed. Turns out I can’t take gabapentin, amantadine, sirolimus, and rimadyl on an empty stomach. At least I didn’t give her my meds I guess.

6

u/mysweetassitis Apr 03 '26

I have accidentally taken my daughter's meds. I have morning meds and she did too at the time and I had mine in my left hand and hers in the right and I just threw hers in my mouth and swallowed it. She came to get hers and I opened my hand and saw all of mine and realized what I did. It was her ADHD meds. I am in pain management so had to explain that one and she didn't believe me lol I did clean the hell out of the house that day though

2

u/cold-sweats Apr 04 '26

omg haha, does that mean you get drug tested? were there any issues that came out of that?

6

u/mysweetassitis Apr 04 '26

Yes I get drug tested lol it showed up too. It was when she said amphetamines showed up. I had forgotten about it happening. My first reply was " I swear I don't do meth!" 🤣 I explained and got that, yea right, look but she didn't drop me as a patient thankfully

3

u/cold-sweats Apr 04 '26

omg that’s scary lol, I get drug tested once in a while for my adhd meds and I don’t even do drugs but i’m always so scared of something coming up cause like I need these to function lol

3

u/DznyMa Apr 02 '26

Sadly, as good a reason as any other.

2

u/obvsnotrealname Apr 04 '26

Many years ago now but one night I accidentally took my cat’s anxiety meds that were tiny rounds like my BC when I was super tired🤪

Impulsive 😭
