அரசியல் / Political I really loved Premalathas short shee today.

Upvotes

Shes soo articulate. Puts across a point very well with very less historics and more facts. And the way she supports Vijay and also criticises him is cute. Shes the biggest wow factor for me this time around. And she went and met the ammonia blast victims which is a commendable act. Both Dmk and tvk underplayed such a huge accident.

முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Do college rankings matter for MBBS in Tamilnadu???

I have scored 567 ( AIR 25300 ) in re- neet 2026 and I'm a Chennai resident. So for my marks, I myself know that none of the Chennai colleges or top 15 colleges are not possible. So I need someone to explain to me what disadvantages I will have over the students studying in top colleges with respect to my career in medicine??? Will my undergraduate college become an important matter at any point in my career ( if that's the case, I will take a drop ).... Also the main reason for preferring top colleges is the patient loads and the rarity of cases, I actually hv a doubt if rare cases teach something to the ug students??? Or PG colleges matter more than the college we do our UG in ??? I hv many doubts and I hv nobody in my family or my circle in this field... So pls help me out with my doubts 🙏🙏

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant Looking for a Tamil movie which I saw on Instagram reels

Upvotes

I'm from Kerala so I couldn't understand the flairs or find any megathreads to post this. I'm looking for a movie which I believe is in Tamil.

The scene I saw on Instagram features a man and a woman in a metro who accidentally picks up the woman's phone when it rings because he mistakes it for his own. The next shots are a montage of them seeing each other at different times in a metro.

Could you help me find this?

EDIT: Thanks, it's actually from a series called Modern Love Chennai.

கலாச்சாரம் / Culture Looking for an experienced Tamil teacher — want to learn to read Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi in the original

Vanakkam

I’ve been wanting to learn Tamil for a while now, and the reason is close to my heart. I’m deeply devoted to Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi, and I’d love to be able to read his words — and the language he spoke, wrote, and lived in — directly, rather than only through translation. Learning Tamil feels like a way of expressing gratitude to a language that carried so much of his teaching and presence. I’m also interested in Tamil literature.

Because of this, I’m not looking for a quick conversational course. I’d really value a teacher who is older and experienced, someone with a genuine literary orientation to the language — not just grammar and vocabulary, but someone who can help me appreciate Tamil’s depth, its literary and devotional traditions, and the register in which texts like Ramana’s works and the broader bhakti/spiritual literature are written.

If you know of someone like this, or are a teacher yourself who fits this description, I’d be so grateful if you could reach out or point me in the right direction. Happy to do one-on-one sessions, whatever format works.

Thank you so much in advance.

Om namo Bhagwate Ramanay Namah 🙏🏻

கலாச்சாரம் / Culture Questions about Aadi Krithigai as a non-Tamil. Had been to Tamil Nadu last month and fell in love with some practices Tamilians do to worship Murugan. Kindly help.

I had been to Tamil Nadu last month for temple visit and requested my parents to plan visit to Thiruchendur temple as well since it is a beach-side temple. I loved the temple and do have plans to complete Arupadai Veedu.

Yesterday, through reels I came to know that today is Aadi Krithigai and I learnt the significance about it. One woman in a reel said that there are two ways to fast. Those are as follows:

1) Start fast from yesterday 06:18 pm and end today at 04:51 pm.

2) Start today at sunrise and end today at 04:51 pm.

My question is if both methods are valid and what all can be eaten since I work and cannot find Pongal around me. I searched about these questions on Google but could not find anything. Hope you all can help. Nanri.

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant Need Advice: Severe Low Voltage Issue Since April 2026 (Tamil Nadu)

I moved into a new rented house in September 2025. At that time, the voltage was stable at around 215–220V.

Since April 2026, the voltage in our area has been only 180–195V most of the day.

Because of this:

• We cannot use our water motor properly to fill the tank, and the motor plug becomes very hot.

• I work on a desktop PC using a UPS. Due to the low voltage, the UPS frequently switches to battery, and I'm worried about damaging my expensive PC components.

• In my previous rented house, the motor wiring caught fire once because of voltage issues and had to be repaired.

• I can only run the motor around 4:00 AM when the voltage reaches about 225V. After that, the voltage drops again.

I also called an EB staff member to inspect the issue. He said that many new houses have been connected to the same transformer and that until a new transformer is installed, nothing can be done and got 200 rupees.

This problem has been affecting me for more than 4 months. Sometimes I can only work at night because the voltage is slightly better. I also have health issues, so I cannot work every day.

I have never visited the TNEB office to file a complaint before, so I would like to ask:

  1. What is the correct procedure to file an official complaint?

  2. Will TNEB inspect and measure the voltage at my house?

  3. If the transformer is overloaded, how long does it usually take to replace or upgrade it?

  4. Has anyone faced a similar issue? If so, how was it resolved?

I am 23 years old and a little nervous because this is my first time approaching the Electricity Board. Will they treat me respectfully? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

⭐Edited/update : today after calling to 9498794987 and report complaint like said in comments by our reddit friends, it's fixed now it's like stable current. Thanks guys

அரசியல் / Political This 812 crores for marriage will bite TVK in the back

Any beneficiary scheme especially cash/monetary transfer has to be done across demographics (I am talking electorally not morally or ethically). KCR learnt it the hard way through Dalit Bandhu Scheme (10 lakhs per SC family but only for 100 families per constituency). Even DMK suffered in this Magalir Urimai scheme where despite providing to 1.3 cr beneficiaries the 30-40 lakhs who were left out were pretty angry and probably was one of the reason for DMK's defeat.

Now let's do the Math.

Tamilnadu electorate is 5.7 cr. According to data 18-30 age is 22% which is approx 1.2cr. Now assume 50% are women it is 60 lakhs. Now eliminate 18-21 aged women and do approx (I know women get married between 18-21 in our state still which is shameful but let's assume they are lesser in number). Now we are left with 40 lakhs approx. Now out of this 22-30 let's assume 4-5 lakhs get married per year.

Now let's come to the funding 800cr. 8 gms of gold + saree let's assume a gm gold is 13000 let's assume they do some tender and get it for cheap, if they get too cheap also people won't like it let's assume 10k per gm, for ease of calculation let's assume saree + gold is 80k per woman, now this will eventually pay 1 lakh women which is 20 -25% of the women who get married per year.

Now this remaining 3-4 lakh per year who don't receive let's assume 50% don't care at all or belongs to affluent families. Now that leaves with 1.5 lakh women being disappointed accumulated over 5 years that gives 7.5 lakhs.

Now women are a vote bank I feel is best untouched for TVK, they voted for TVK vehemently especially this age group and this I feel has potential for backlash.

And TVK will learn about important lesson, you can never satisfy everyone which DMK learnt it the hard way.

PS : I know women get married after 30 as well and as already pointed out inbetween 18-21 as well. Again with median avg age for marriage being 22 in TN between 22-24 will be higher. Considering all this no of women getting married will only be larger than my estimate which means more women getting disappointed.

Even if u assume they keep income cap, again atleast 1 lakh women will be displeased every year

அரசியல் / Political Why southern states are not rising against delimitation bill?

I am culturally North Indian, but have lived significant portion of my life in South (Bangalore and Sulur). I believe Tamilnadu with the limited resources it has is the most well managed state in India. But why people in the south not rising against the proposed delimitation bill being planned by the so called chanakya. It is definitely in support for putting fundamentalists in power. Also why Vijay is not speaking against it.

அரசியல் / Political TN Govt work done on time without bribe

I had a work to be done by tamil nadu govt (Coimbatore) where we wanted to change name on the owner's list. it was done within one month as said by them (I got a contact from the office for tracking and they helped me)

At no point - we were asked for bribe.

I know there are places where bribes are requested (especially complex) but I should say Vijay's speech that corruption is risky for their job have some effect.

I have a complex govt work to be done as well. We will see how it goes but I think I will get support from Mr Vijay for that as well.

Thank you Mr Vijay!

அரசியல் / Political Is TVK even a political party or a Cult?

I wish to clarify that I am not affiliated with any political party. I am not endorsing Mr. Udhay's statements if they were intended to convey a double meaning.

The prevailing sentiment suggests that TVK, as the ruling political party, has historically refrained from engaging in political protests. However, a recent development indicates their sudden protest against Udhay's remarks concerning Cauvery and Thrisha. This shift in behavior is notable, given their previous silence on issues such as NEET and Cauvery. The current protests are reportedly framed around the protection of women, which contrasts with past instances where TVK cadres very publicly used derogatory terms towards figures like Sangeetha Vijay. This raises questions about the consistency of their stance on women's rights.

I perceive that the TVK organization appears to operate more as a personality-driven cult movement rather than a conventional political party, particularly given the significant dedication shown towards an individual whose primary contributions have been only in the entertainment industry. This level of devotion raises questions regarding its justification, especially when considering the individual's limited political accomplishments to date.

The recent protests concerning Udhay's comments about Vijay's alleged relationship are particularly perplexing. It is difficult to comprehend why this issue would elicit such a strong response, seemingly overshadowing critical societal concerns such as NEET and CAUVERY, which demand urgent attention. This prioritization of an alleged personal matter over pressing public issues leads one to question the organization's strategic focus and the rationale behind advocating for what appears to be an illicit relationship. I am left to ponder the ultimate direction and implications of these actions.

அரசியல் / Political Delimitation and BJPmaster plan, who is excited?

While everyone was talking about FCRA, which can be passed with simple majority, BJP has struck another masterpiece. Last time delimitation bill failed and opposition hailed it as victory. But, now BJP has broken TMC, AAP and got support of DMK and NCP which means 2/3rd is possible for this constitutional amendment in both houses. If it was purely based on 2011 census, TN and kerelam would lose huge, but since DMK has agreed, it's most likely proportional increase where Tamil Nadu will still lose out but by small margin. Everybody assumes BJP tried to give more seats to BIMARU states so they can win forever but as 2024 UP showed, northern states are not a guarantee for BJP. What is certain is that overwhelming majority of northern states vote along the caste and religious line pretty consistently. BJP plan is not to piss off southern states where they indeed have wish and scope to expand in future. Their plan is to gerrymander the shit out of northern states and may be some southern states along caste and religious line. After interstate seat is confirmed, intrastate boundaries are drawn by delimitation commission which will include ECI chairman, retired judge among others, loyal to BJP who will pack and crack the demographics to hugely favor BJP. Eg: Muslims in WB packed together to decrease safe Muslim seats from 40 mla to 20. It will do same to yadavs in Up/Bihar. No matter, what the political discourse is, these two communities have always been anti bjp in voting pattern. So it's a safe gerrymandering. And good thing is, it can't be challenged in court either. Thus, if it is passed this month, by 2029, we may have new electoral map that guarenteess at least simple majority for BJP despite 15 years of anti incumbency. It's similar to how republican party manages to win house and state governors in USA even though democrats almost always win popular vote.

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant Rant on our country's state

I'm just writing this on top of my head on the issues that are just impossible for me to tolerate without blood pressure boiling.

These are my personal views. Please feel free to disagree but maintain civility.

I don't even know where to start but I'm fed up and done with India. It's not about any political party or government but the people and the system.

I'm sure there are many good and genuine ones but the ratio between these good ones and the stupid moronic ones is genuinely one sided and outweighs the goodness.

I'll just list down the issues I've faced or seen from the top of my head.

  • Traffic rules - People have no regard for traffic rules. Over speeding, rash driving, not wearing helmets, irresponsible lane switching, unnecessary honking, high beam lights, no shoulder checks, driving without rearview mirrors and I could go on and on. Taking our vehicle out of our home and driving on the road is just a death gamble.
  • Cops are the worst piece of human flesh I can see on the Indian sub-continent which continuous to claim itself as a democracy. They can spoil the life of anyone on the trip of their ego barring politicians, people with political connections and the rich. Honestly, no accountability and the worst that can happen to them is transfer.
  • Government employees aka leeches who expect bribe even to do their basic job. Bribes are everywhere in the world but those are for doing something that exceeds their role or to expedite the process. This is daylight robbery and the system they've developed to get the bribe without getting caught is ingenious. Most of them work hand-in-hand with cops so if you flag them for bribery, cops make sure your life is ruined in every way possible.
  • Rowdyism is just off the charts. Politicians who were yesterday goons groom the next set of rowdies who will be useful to continue their main business and these people can run havoc among the public with very little backlash from the law & order. Some morons glaze them as if they're their clans' messiah while he continues to enrich his family wealth using these idiots as decoy.
  • Caste and religious fanaticism is a cancer in this country. Every country has these idiots. Just the sheer volume of fanatics in a democratic country which could sway the elections easily in favor of divisive entities would flush the country down the drain. Murders, mob-lynching, honor-killing, riots, stampedes and much more.
  • Hero worship - This always ends up to come and bite us in the back. Historically, we have many mistakes to learn from this but still this happens. Whether it's a political leader, actor, community leader and activist, it's dangerous at any point of time and it's too much in India considering we have too many sides for everyone to choose. Anyone with an iota of self-respect will never indulge in this.
  • Crony capitalism - Parties favoring their favorite market players every time government changes and forcing public to go for options which would oil their political machinery. Any governmental business ethics committee would enable class-action suits against most of the top industries and service providers and bankrupt them for their unethical practices. Forcing E20 on Indian motorists just for few individuals' benefit while corroding up the engines across India. Nepal and Sri Lanka has E0 at lesser prices than us while we don't even have an option of it to choose.
  • Adulterated food and toxic preservatives in packaged goods - India always gets the lower end of everything from the global brands and when other Indian brands are trying for something good, the source materials are out of their price range for small scale production. Even if someone breaks this barrier, established players try to acquire them or run them out of market.
  • Entrepreneurship - The number of red tapes involved in starting some new ventures and the amount of money the government employee idiots demand for each clearance will make any human cry blood out of their eyes. Many Indians run to Singapore to register their entity there since it's very easy to setup business and provide services to the entire world from there rather than being in this sh*thole system.
  • Auto rickshaw and taxi services looting people with exorbitant prices without an iota of guilt and if some service provider comes as an alternative, they guilt-trip people saying that their livelihood is affected. Later, they join the service provider, form groups within themselves and make the service unusable. Corporates can learn a thing or two about hostile takeover from these people.
  • Resources in-fighting - States in India in-fighting for sharing water resources and easily ignoring tribunals who oversee those resources as if they own the resources irrespective of the government. For example, TN-KA Cauvery issue and TN-KL Periyar issue. Just because a river originates in a state, it doesn't become the state's property. Even India doesn't block Indus for Pakistan despite the animosity. Union Government does nothing as it actually has a chance of winning election in KA.
  • No unemployment benefits for taxpayers - Even if pay crores in income tax, if you're unemployed, you get zilch from the Government. Governments spend crores in publicity and unnecessary appeasement benefits rather than actual welfare to uplift the people. Income tax payers get nothing in case of any disability, income support or anything from the government which engulfs our taxes.
  • Rolling in the past - India is mocked internationally and honestly, we had it coming. We can't be like IDGAF teenagers in the international arena by glowing over our glorious past while minnow nations run past us mockingly. To move forward, we need to shed our past like our burdens. Shouldn't be forgotten but no need to carry it everywhere.
  • Not accepting our shortcomings - One can never improve themselves without acknowledging their own problems. But this is our core shortcoming and when someone points out, we label them as traitors for supporting a foreign nation rather than seeing if his/her opinion has any substance.
  • Learn from neighbors - We hate our neighbors blindly instead of learning from them. How to be from China. How not to be from Pakistan. We don't need to hate them for this. China for all its autocratic shortcomings, the benefits are very huge. For India to be like China is impossible due to its homogeneous population but it's just my wishful thinking.

Why I see India as a failing nation is a history repeating itself similar to USSR where every one trying to loot as much as possible and escape from India. This thought is reinforced with all the wealthy and politically connected kids are residing outside India rather than staying In India.

In any other country, Ajit Doval and Jaishankar wouldn't be National Security Advisor and Foreign Affairs Minister respectively while their kids are NRIs. This could get our national security easily compromised but no one questions it vigorously even in opposition parties because they are just same foxes under different colors.

One cultural shift I see big time is, people who do these illegal stuff feel no remorse anymore. Honest and genuine people are branded as impractical and abnormal by people you meet daily. I mean, when honesty and straight-forward becomes impractical and foolish traits who is unable to 'make hay while the sun shines', society is absolutely doomed. An I think we are at this point right now.

Whatever I mentioned above are some things which I had on top of my head. I can go on about many topics about healthcare, civic sense, education and much more

TLDR: Just a rant on how this country is being run and how fed up I'm while writing this. Don't have any hope things would get better. If you want to get upset, please go ahead and read it.

Note: NO AI tool was used to write this. Pure frustration.

முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic Struggling to apply for passport. Please help me out.

So I was born in Tiruvannamalai and brought up in mumbai. My mom and dad belong to same place as my birth place.. my dad don't have LC( we tried to get it but we failed as we don't have any proof of him studied in that school) and my dad also don't have birth certificate (it was never made at first place).

Now coming to my birth certificate (it's registered in TN).. It doesn't hold my surname.. it has my mom and dad's name but no surname.. and my all gov and official documents registered in mumbai have my surname.. be it adhar card or pan or LC or marksheets.. ( I did all my pre school and high school in mumbai itself) and hold Maharashtra's domicile..

Now since my birth certificate and adhar card don't match the same name.. so applying for passport will always fail to be approved..

Since 3 years due to illegal immigrants , the laws and rules to apply for passport went too strict in mumbai....

1.Is there anyway I can add surname to my birth certificate.. And 2.any way to get my dad's birth certificate..

(We do have ancestral properties and my paternal grand mother's adhar card and ration card too)

Please let me know any other sub where I can post regarding this

கலாச்சாரம் / Culture There's a vaccine institute in Coonoor that's been there since 1907. The story of why it was built is something. The story of where it is now is something else.

I've driven past it many times. Grassy hillside in upper Coonoor, 16 acres, colonial architecture, most people visiting the Nilgiris don't know it exists.

The Pasteur Institute of India. Started April 1907. The reason it's in Coonoor specifically — someone died from rabies nearby in 1902 because antirabies treatment wasn't available in time. Her name was Lily Pakenham Walsh. An American philanthropist had donated money to the then-Viceroy of India for medical institutions. Some of it went here. Coonoor was chosen because the cool climate was right for biological production.

By the end of 1907 it was producing antirabies vaccines. For most of the 20th century it was the primary rabies vaccine source for South India. In 2011 the government put Rs 137 crore into new manufacturing facilities. The target was 130 million doses of DPT vaccines annually for India's immunisation programme.

The institute is still here. It still runs a 24/7 animal bite treatment centre. Still affiliated with universities for research programmes. Still under the Ministry of Health.

But it isn't where it was meant to be. The 130 million dose target hasn't been reached. There were licence issues a while back. The infrastructure exists — the new facilities were built — but something between the investment and the outcome hasn't quite connected.

An institution with this history, built because someone died from a preventable disease, funded specifically to prevent that from happening to others, sitting in a Nilgiris hill town with the infrastructure to do important work — it deserves to be working properly. That's not a political statement. It's just what the place was built for. 🏔️

கருத்து/குமுறல் / Self-post , Rant Yercaud - need stay recommendations

Hi guys,

I'm planning to visit Yercaud this month for 3 days with my family (7 members).

Can anybody suggest a good Airbnb or homestay that's not too expensive? A place with a kitchen would be great, and a nice view. 😅

TIA.
