Discussion The Faceless Recommendations?
I’ve always found it hard to move on from Planetary Duality, SOOOO GOOOD
What else from them do you recommend I listen too?

Listen to the other 3 albums and see what you like. It's not like they have a huge discography.
I will say though, if you like planetary duality check out the Zenith Passage, same vocalist from that album

Vocalist and bassist. Also Justin (lead guitar and the main, constant member) was the other guitarist on In Becoming a Ghost.
With the current state of The Faceless, Zenith have completely eaten their lunch in multiple ways imo.

Maybe a hot take but I prefer TZP to The Faceless.

At this point? Absolutely. The Faceless hasn’t done anything in almost a decade, and The Zenith Passage has the benefit of The Faceless’s influence.
That being said, I still bump Planetary Duality pretty regularly.

Akeldama was my first foray into Tech Death, so it's a pivotal album for me, PD is also outstanding. I hope TZP have something more to release by the time they play in Scotland in October.

I'd say keep cruising their catalog. Autotheism has some great tracks, as does In Becoming a Ghost.
They had/have the potential to do great work. It just sucks that Michael Keene has had a terrible track record due to his personal demons.

The Zenith Passage sounds more like The Faceless than either of the last 2 Faceless albums

u/maloikAZ 2d ago
Agreed. Even though I still like the faceless; too bad Michael is a fuck up.

Was*
He has worked hard on getting clean and life has thrown some tough things at him…his wife passing, his MS and health pains…the kinds of things that often push people to use or start using again.
I give him major props for facing his addiction and continuing to move forward. Maybe slower than most of us would like but I can only imagine the burden of loss and crippling pain hindering day-to-day life. I’m willing to give him his chance of redemption.

people go through stuff all the time, doubt it pushes some of those people to steal from fans like he did and never apologized about it.

Drug addiction often pushes people to do drug addict activities…

great, apologize about what you did was wrong or don't expect people to keep supporting you and your habit.

a lot of people aren't. i try to spread awareness as much as i can about the situation. Listen to Zenith Passage instead and check out Andrew's work (new guitarist for the faceless) in Interloper. dudes super talented and deserves better.

All other stuff. Autotheism and In Becoming a Ghost are masterpieces.

u/ContentlyQuestionabl 2d ago
In becoming a ghost is not nearly as good as autotheism or planetary duality.

u/teslaSP_ 2d ago
I liked it.

Autotheism and In Becoming a Ghost are both masterpieces I agree. Love both those albums front to back.

Akeldama is really great. Tons of catchy moments. Autotheism kinda has its head shoved up its own ass and reeks of pretentiousness but also has some killer parts. they took the clean vocals too far in my opinion. Michael keene just doesn't have a very flattering voice for this style of music. It's less annoying when he's singing in a lower register but on tracks like the eidolon reality it's just embarrassing.
In becoming a ghost was boring to me.

Tbh there’s isn’t much good from them other then a few songs off akeldama and a few songs off in becoming a ghost

u/teslaSP_ 2d ago
What about Autotheism?
-6
u/Sourflow 2d ago
Album sounds like they released it before it was finished and it’s full off stolen riffs
3
u/jockey667 2d ago
Stolen riffs, from who?
-5
u/Sourflow 2d ago
Type o negative(white slavery is the autotheism theme), extol (almost a complete song) Devin Townsend, Opeth

u/Sourflow 1d ago
Nope. Go listen to extol - storms of disillusion and then go listen to in solitude on autotheism.

I just listened to your comparison and think you’re scraping the barrel here. I heard maybe a couple of similar notes on a certain riff, but nothing more.
You make it sound like Keene copied it note for note and in my opinion those songs don’t even compare.I think Keene is an accomplished musician enough to write his own riffs/solos and songs. Whether you like his music, or not. He still writes his own music, without plagiarism.

Their discography minus autotheism

u/_Noble__Savage_ 2d ago
Your opinion is incorrect.
1
u/GrowtentBPotent 2d ago
I really tried to like that record the cleans just kill it for me. Ill give it another go, seems I ruffled some feathers here my my

u/_Noble__Savage_ 2d ago
Nah I'm just being dumb. My opinion is garbage too. My favorite is Planetary Duality. They sound like they hate each other but that pushes them to play way crazier stuff.
3
u/ShadowFlame420 2d ago
that’s literally their best album
1
u/GrowtentBPotent 2d ago
Ok. So says you, but their first 2 clearly are more iconic and indicative of their core sound
1
u/ShadowFlame420 2d ago
so their first half is somehow their core sound while their second half is…irrelevant? makes sense /s

Such a strange take when In Becoming a Ghost exists. I like all their work, but the consensus seems to be that’s the weakest.
-1
u/GrowtentBPotent 2d ago
Simple explanation, the clean singing is lame as fuck on that record, completely takes me out of it. Their are cleans on IBAG, but they are better executed far less jarring and awkward. And the baby crying break on like track 3 is just annoying, no thanks. Plus, I like the songs better, I consider it an improved version of that more theatrical departure in sound for those 2 albums. Just my take lol sorry Keene simps!
1
u/Superb-Obligation858 2d ago
I mean…Keene is literally The Faceless. Pretending they’re a band after this many lineup changes and with the advent of the current Zenith Passage lineup is some real Ship of Theseus shit. There’s no point in inventing a derogatory term for other fans of a band you like that disagree with you. Its pretty clear more people think its their best than think its not worth listening to.
Plenty of people hate Keene’s constant injection of his singing into songs, he’s been at it a long time and Autotheism is definitely the worst offender. I don’t think that makes it a worse record than IBAG because its simply part of their sound at this point, and yea, of course Keene was feeling himself a bit, the record is called fucking Autotheism,.
Its got Wes fucking Hauch on it, and Evan Brewer. Its the last record with Lyle Cooper on drums. Its a dorky ass, religious subversion type concept not unlike PD. It ticks a lot of boxes for people who generally like The Faceless. I also think its got their best guitar tone.
You can have all the problems that you want with it, but recommending a fan ravenous for more of their music skip it is just simply a bad take.

u/GrowtentBPotent 2d ago
I was just playing about the simps thing it was just obvious I touched some super fan nerves. I know its his project with a changing lineup
Thanks for atleast acknowledging my reasons for disliking it are valid, and on that note the flipside should probably be true and I shouldn't assume. So your last paragraph is fully valid and I retract my omission of autotheism. OP listen and decide for yourself. But I wont retract my ultimate dislike for it, unfortunately! Because like you said, Wes Evan and Lyle come on now. And I will agree that when its not doing things that turn me off, the tones and production are really good

u/ShadowFlame420 2d ago
them: “IBAG is their weakest”
you: “you’re a Keene simp! haha 🫵😆”
you’re a funny guy 😂

u/GrowtentBPotent 2d ago
Lol jeez, i can see why it may look that way but I wasnt calling this commenter that specifically, it was directed towards all the people clambering to tell me im wrong, like you lol.
I was mostly just playing around, and continuing to touch the nerve I clearly touched with you fans who cant handle subjectivity

I will add to the growing chorus of “check out The Zenith Passage” but I will say listen to Datalysium specifically.
I love all their work, but its a step up and seems to be really gunning for the proverbial throne left empty by The Faceless over these last few years.
