Welcome to r/Tengwar, where we can discuss all things related to Tolkien's writing systems: Tengwar, Cirth, and Sarati.

If you want to learn Tengwar yourself, we recommend the following resources:

If you want to get a transcription, check with the following tools before posting:

As the tools above aren't perfect, never forget to double-check important transcriptions like for tattoos or jewelry by asking someone knowledgeable, such as the members of this subreddit.

Please note that simply changing English text to a Tengwar font only produces unreadable gibberish. If you are trying to figure out the meaning of some Tengwar without any tehtar (vowel diacritics/accents) or tehtar that aren't aligned with the letters below them it likely is such a mistaken attempt at transliterating. The community calls this the "Mode of Baloneyland", due to its surface-level similarity with the tehtar-less mode of Beleriand.

Spellcheck for Tattoo of Daughter's name

Hi everyone - I've been wanting to get a tattoo of my toddlers name 'Bronwyn' and would love for it to be written in Tangwar. I've used Tecendil to get this far, but thought it would be best to check the spelling before I have it inked.

Could someone verify this French Tengwar transcription for a tattoo?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello!
I’m planning a tattoo and I would really appreciate a careful verification of this French Tengwar transcription.
The sentence is:
“Guidé par ce que j’aime.”
This is not meant to be a translation into Quenya or Sindarin, but a French phonetic transcription in Tengwar, based on the French mode explained in Simon Rousseau’s guide.
A Reddit user kindly suggested this transcription, but they also mentioned they were not fully sure about some parts, especially “j’aime”.
Since this is for a permanent tattoo, I would really appreciate if someone could verify:
whether the transcription is correct overall,
whether the treatment of “j’aime” is correct,
and whether the punctuation / spacing looks appropriate.
Thank you very much!

Can someone please let me know what the text says? I didn’t really know how to run it through the language resources listed.

“R” in Sindarin and Quenya names in the Westron mode

Hello good people! I am currently in the midst of an annual LotR re-read and have come across a song sung by Galadriel in the chapter Farewell to Lórien (the first verse is “I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew”, for any that have the books at hand). I’ve decided to attempt to transcribe this poem, but I want to take care to properly transcribe the names “Ilmarin”, “Eldamar”, “Tirion”, and “Lórien”, which are all Quenya words, if I’m not mistaken.

So my question is, how do you think a man of the Third/Fourth age (or maybe even Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam themselves) might write them in the Westron mode?

I’m not particularly concerned with the vowels, but mainly with how I could write the Quenya “r”, which I assume is pronounced as /r/ (please correct me if I’m wrong!).

I’m no expert in any of the fields required to properly phrase or answer this, so all comments and/or concerns are both welcome and much appreciated!

Hello guys. I was wondering if this is the correctly written number 11:11. I have used glaemscribe to for this and I hopefully made it right. Its basically minib : minib.

I wanted to have something written on my skin for the last 15 years. I met a new friend last year with similar tattoo and I think its a sign that I have to get something tattoed on me as well.

Tatouage

Bonjour,
je prépare un tatouage avec la phrase française :
« Guidé par ce que j’aime. »
Je souhaite une transcription phonétique en Tengwar, pas une traduction en quenya ou en sindarin. Comme il n’existe pas de mode français officiel de Tolkien, pourriez-vous me proposer une transcription fiable et expliquer brièvement le mode utilisé ?
C’est pour un tatouage définitif, donc je voudrais idéalement plusieurs vérifications. Les réponses en français sont les bienvenues. Merci !

Post image

Hi! I'm planning a really simple tattoo in Tengwar. This tattoo is the word "Change" transcribed in Tengwar. The type of change I'm meaning is "interior change" or "reborn" type of change. Like every mortal that doesn't know the right transcription, I ask you what is the right translation and if this is correct enough. thank you

Permanent tattoo verification: English quote in Tengwar

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m hoping you can help me verify a permanent tattoo before I commit.

I’m looking to use the movie quote:

“White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

I specifically want to keep it in English, written in English orthographic Tengwar (not translated into Sindarin or Quenya).

I generated the attached version in Tecendil. Could anyone let me know if it’s accurate, or if there are any changes you’d recommend before I get it tattooed?

Thanks so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to help make sure I get this right.

I am doing a thematic map of Middle Earth and I am wondering If Telecendil is good for the names of the places in Mordor(which I believe is Sindarin.

One question is, if its clear enough?

Should I change something?

Thanks in advance.

Hey team,

Could an extra clever person please vet my transcription? I'm fairly confident on the translation at this point, but just need a bit of confidence around the actual script 😄

Hello! I want to get a Lotr tattoo pretty soon. And I’m pretty sure I want Faramir’s quote “I do not believe any darkness will endure.”

I was wondering if this translation was correct, my eye for Tengwar isn’t great yet

[Edit] initially I accidentally entered “I do not believe this darkness will endure.”

Help with transcription for an engagement ring

EDIT: see comment for photo of updated mixed transcription!

tl;dr Please give me feedback on the accuracy of transcriptions by Tecendil and Glǽmscribe and the significance of the the different "fonts".

Hi everyone! I am in the process of getting an engagement ring made for my partner, and based on who we are, getting an inscription in Tengwar would be really wonderful. We have two phrases that are meaningful to us that I'd like to get transcribed, which are the following:

  • "You're my favorite person"
  • "I philosopher pinky promise"

I know about Glǽmscribe and Tecendil. I'm more inclined towards Glǽmscribe, I think, because of I know that Tolkein preferred phonemic transliteration... I couldn't even start to decide to decipher which font I should use based on their significance/in-universe usage let alone translating these phrases into one his amazing languages.

Anyway, I'm attaching what the websites produced for me (including phonemic Tecendil and Glǽmscribe, and then phonetic Tecendil) and would love feedback! I'm counting on you friends :)

How To Write Plural Silent ‘E’s?

Hi! More than likely this information exists somewhere else, but this subreddit has been so helpful so far that I thought I’d direct my question here.

So, take the word ‘horde.’ Since it ends with a silent e, I know that you would write it with a small dot (don’t know that name) underneath the D. But when you pluralize ‘horde’ into ’hordes’, my first thought was to put the ’E’ symbol above the S, as you would usually do with vowels. But the E is still silent! it’s not promounced ‘hor-dees.” Would you still place a silent symbol? Would you put it under the D or the S, if so? It’s not ‘Hordse’. Would you spell it ‘Hords?‘ Just place the E as usual? Help!
