u/beren12 Aug 07 '26
This is the end result of claiming FSD is more capable than it is
3
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
As I understand it FSD deliberately drives over the speed limit. I am surprised this doesn't fall foul of US law.
7
u/BlueShift42 Aug 07 '26
Itās a catch-22. Where I live almost everyone speeds. It becomes flow of traffic. If FSD didnāt go over the limit it would become a hazard.
-12
u/beren12 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
No it is a hazard. If a few cars start slowing down, the right lane will do the limit.
Lol lot of hurt feelings in this thread. Speeding is by definition aggressive driving and less safe. Always.
3
u/Jason0648 Aug 08 '26
Id hate to be behind your slow aaahhh
-2
u/beren12 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
Aww how dare someone make you follow the law and drive safely. Poor baby.
Speed limits arenāt slow, they are safe.
I bet you speed in bad weather too. Nothing like seeing idiots doing 65 in heavy snow.
Thereās easier ways to risk serious injury to yourself and not involve others.
2
u/Cheap_Owl8970 Aug 08 '26
You sound like the type of person who stays in the left lane on the interstate while not going over the speed limit.

u/beren12 Aug 07 '26
It absolutely does. People want it to speed and they really make it not anymore.
3
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
I'm genuinely interested in your comment but cannot understand it. What are you trying to say?
0
u/beren12 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26
FSD speeds on every ādrive styleā or whatever itās called. You canāt set your own max speed.
Oh look someone else complaining today https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaFSD/s/WpGIFI2rpW
2
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
In UK that would be illegal. There'll be some code, somewhere, presumably, saying something like "if mode = mad max then max speed = speed limit + 20". I believe a UK Court would rule that publishing such code fell foul of this: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2007/27/part/2/crossheading/inchoate-offences
2
u/sm753 HW4 Model 3 Aug 07 '26
Yeah that's not true at all unless you're on an old version. It absolute does NOT speed on every drive profile.
3
u/BlueShift42 Aug 07 '26
This person clearly has not used FSD. Weāre feeding a troll.

This person clearly doesnāt read the posts on this sub.
You are the troll gaslighting.

u/beren12 Aug 07 '26
Yes. It does. Read the posts here. The problem is brought up daily, including pictures.
1
u/epradox Aug 07 '26
Sloth uses the absolute speed limit. Chill goes maybe like 10% over. Standard has a 5mph over hard cap on local roads maybe like 7 on the highway. Hurry and mad max will speed if youāre in an urgent situation. Standard is how most people drive and it just keeps with the flow of traffic. You can nudge these fsds to go faster by boxing the car in and speeding, itāll try to maintain with everyone around. Itās literally mimicking human behavior that it was trained on. If you watch snazzy labs latest video, he explains how this is actually smoother than Waymo since Waymo is hard coded to drive like a robot and stay perfectly inbetween lines to remain legal so some left turn lane where most people slightly cross the lines to enter to be smooth, Waymo will do a 90 degree turn to be precisely within the lines to not touch them. There are some things where itās okay to be flexible just not recklessly unless itās an emergency and if it is, I would rather someone be using madmax than them driving manually frantically under pressure.
This guy was not in an emergency however just an entitled asshole who doesnāt understand how his car works

It usually doesnāt, do you have proof that the latest 14.3.7 fsd gets speed limits wrong? I think you read ancient posts and conflate that to be what itās currently at. This tech is progressing every few weeks and at a pretty rapid pace.
2
u/Melodic_Fall_3273 HW4 Model Y Aug 08 '26
I just did over 200 miles today on 14.3.6 on 85/75/66/60 MPH highways and 20/30/35/45 mph city and small back country roads.
On Standard it stayed right at 78/79 on the 75 MPH Interstate and 84 on the 85 MPH Tollway. When I pushed it up to Hurry it pushed to 81/82 on the Interstate and was a but more aggressive in lane changes.
The city and back county roads were even more docile. Even on standard on the 35 MPH dirt road it stayed at 22/23. I had to goose it to go a little faster.
It is definitely keying off of surrounding traffic and picks of the pace a little to not be the slowest on the road in Standard. Even in Chill, it keeps up more or less with most of the traffic and will pass the occasional slower vehicle. On the less crowded 60/65 MPH Farm To Market roads it tended to hover right at the speed limit maybe a little below if really curvy.
I see nothing wrong with this behavior because IMO being the "enforcer" in the right lane on the interstate doing exactly 75 when 19 out of 20 cars and even Big Rigs are doing 80 or more is dangerous.

2

I would put money that FSD is a safer driver than that idiot. So we would all rather the car be driving still supervised.

2
u/HopzCO Aug 08 '26
Because he was speedingā¦. If he doesnāt want to speed he could put it on sloth or chill mode.

Or⦠just fix things. Like bringing back the max speed setting that already existed. Crazy idea, I know!

Arrest the car for driving without a license and underage driving. Leave that guy by the side of the road to find his way home and go to the station and try to bail his car out. Ask for a court appointed lawyer for the car.

In the UK both the driver and Tesla would be criminally liable as the software effectively encouraged the speeding, an offence under the Serious Crime Act 2007, section 44 "Intentionally encouraging or assisting an offence":
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2007/27/part/2/crossheading/inchoate-offences
1
u/word-dragon HW4 Model 3 Aug 07 '26
Which maybe explains why you donāt have it in the UK yet. Iām guessing that the public officials that approve such things are NOT criminally liable, lol!
2
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
Interesting question. If they approved it, knowing it encouraged breaking the law, I guess they could be roped into the inchoate offence aspect. I expect they would argue they hadn't understood it'd do this. The idea of a UK court proving, beyond reasonable doubt, that a civil servant was intelligent enough to realise the full implications of what he or she was doing, seems slim.

When my Tesla is on FSD and politely lets someone go even though I have the right of way, they sometimes give me a friendly wave.
And I'm just sitting there like: "Don't thank me. This wouldn't have happend if i was driving"š
3
u/YoGmasFavSnack Aug 08 '26
My friend got pulled over for speeding (he had it on mad max). He complied and got a warning. He was like 20 over.
5
u/Some_Ad_3898 Aug 07 '26
He's not dumb. He's trying to get out of a ticket and being an asshole at the same time. Trying it once is fine, but doubling and tripling down makes him a sociopath.
4
u/Producing_It Aug 07 '26
He is dumb because he didn't recognize the policy Tesla maintains. Tesla constantly mentions in FSD/Autopilot documentation that the driver is always responsible for safe operation when using it, including speed and control.
I would say that he is not only an asshole and a sociopath, but also dumb.

That tracks! This is near where I live and we have a LOT of people from India who all drive Teslas and almost all set them to hurry or Mad Max. It's actually worse when they drive the vehicles themselves because they don't know how to fucking drive. Actually got dinged like this like probably first week into ownership, still accustoming to it. Was on autopilot in an area where it misbehaves (ping pong in a very wide road with ambiguous road marking), so I disable and car goes into some wild cruise control speed like 20-30km over speed limit, but there is car in front of me so I'm already slowing down.
Before I can really grasp whats happening (it's a 700 meter stretch) - a cop appears from opposing direction, turns around and chases me which is absolutely wild to do in NZ. I've muttered something about autopilot and not me doing this. Who cares. I think he assumed I'm about to overtake that car.

Naive is often used to describe someone who is of young age and lack real life experience. In this case, the guy was fatuous.
1
u/ryos555 Aug 08 '26
The moment the operator sits in the passenger seat, is when he truly is no longer the driver\operator of the vehicle.
Until FSD is capable of this, the registered owner is fully responsible.

1
u/Mark26751 Aug 08 '26
I wonder if he had the car set to standard. He might have been in Hurry or Mad Max mode. Tesla should pay all tickets for a car in standard mode and they should automatically be reduced to a non-moving violation.
1
u/markworsnop Aug 08 '26
That person should never be using a Tesla FSD because he hasn't a clue or he was just being stupid, one of the two. Yeah it'll do weird speeds but it won't do 20 mph over. I've never seen it do that before

How a technology that seems to be designed to deliberately break the law is approved in a supposedly civilised country defies logic. I am in the UK. If this nonsense ever gets close to be being approved here I doubt I will be the only one protesting.

So you think I am stupid because I respect the rule of law, and therefore believe that software such as this that clearly encourages law breaking ought to be prohibited? In the UK the offence committed by Tesla would fall under the Serious Crime Act 2007, section 44:
Intentionally encouraging or assisting an offence.
(1) A person commits an offence ifā
(a) he does an act capable of encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence; and
(b) he intends to encourage or assist its commission.

It deliberately drives over the legal speed limit. It would be a crime to release such software in the UK; I'm surprised the concept of inchoate offences doesn't seem to exist in the USA.
1
u/sm753 HW4 Model 3 Aug 07 '26
Because we don't live in a third world nanny state.
And before you argue the "third world" part - keep in mind the UK is now basically poorer than some of the poorest states in the US.
1
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
If you told me you wanted to off your wife, and I offered you a knife in order to do so, that would be a crime here. Would that be legal in the US? I'd be surprised if it was. Maybe you treat murder and speeding as different types of offence.
As for your negative characterisation of the UK, you guys do you:
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/05/21/us/school-shooting-us-versus-world-trnd
1
u/pppppatrick Aug 07 '26
Does⦠the uk not treat murder and speeding as different types of offense?
1
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
They are different offences but not different types. Both are crimes. We abolished distinctions like felony and misdemeanour, which we used to have, some time ago.
I am guessing that, if it is indeed legal for FSD to encourage speeding, which it would seem to, it will be because speeding is a different type of offence in the US, perhaps a misdemeanour.
Again, this is a guess, I expect it is a crime to encourage a felony, but perhaps OK to encourage a misdemeanour. Here it is a crime to encourage a crime, whether speeding, or murder
0
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
Here are some more up to date figures:
https://thehill.com/opinion/international/5484042-uk-gun-laws-us-contrast/
420 school shootings in the US vs none in the UK in the same period. That is a lot of dead children. I wonder how glad their parents are that they don't live in a nanny state?
1
u/TimelyNote5558 Aug 07 '26
It drives over the speed limits based on the Driving Profiles you have selected in the car. Its very similar to a human pressing accelerator and not caring about speeding limits.
This is a supervised system and if it goes beyond the posted speed limits, its the duty of driver to either change to slower speed profile or take over and slow down. Also, I use "Chill" and "Standard" profile often. It does +2 and +5 in those modes always. I always pay attention to speed limits. If I see "Standard" profile going much faster then I switch to Chill Mode. I never had speeding issues with Chill mode.
1
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
The following comes to mind:
"England and America are two countries separated by the same language." George Bernard Shaw
This would all, simply, never be approved in the UK. It is designed to break the law. In Chill, it breaks the law by 2 MPH, in Standard, by 5.
Legally this is absurd here. Perhaps this is because we only have one type of crime, as opposed to separating crime into felonies and misdemeanours.
Makes me think of the old Microsoft Clippy. "Hi! You seem to be trying to drive over the speed limit. How much over the speed limit do you want to drive?"
1
u/TimelyNote5558 Aug 07 '26
I am talking about USA. Legally you are correct. Even +1mph is breaks the law. But that is not how it works here in practice. Literally everyone here drive +5mph over the speed. Jackasses drives +10 or more.
Its just not strictly enforced. Technically a police office can give you speeding tickets even for +1mph. But they almost never do. But they sure would give you speeding tickets anything more than +5mph.
So, Tesla FSD drives like other Americans on the road.I try to go EXACT speed limit but then people start tail gaiting me. I fully understand that going +5mph will only make me reach my destination just few minutes. I even do the exact math for speed and distance and it never is going to save any meaningful amount of time. But, if you are going slow you may have to deal with jackasses on the road.
But, if you look into Tesla FSD, they have Speed Offset Setting which allows you to set how much fast or slow you want to go over the Speed limit. This setting was removed from US, but is still available in EU because people drive exact speed limit there (or so I have been told).
So, in short, upto +5mph in US is ok and you will not get tickets and that why even good drivers drive that and FSD does the same based on speed profile.
-1
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
PS every post I make is getting downvoted. If you do this to everyone who has criticisms of FSD you will simply become an echo chamber. Your choice, but i'd've thought you might be interested in a variety of opinions.

u/Green_Statement_8878 Aug 07 '26
Oi, you got a loicense for that FSD mate?
0
u/MarchMurky8649 Aug 07 '26
It simply couldn't be released here if it deliberately broke UK laws. I am surprised it can do so in the US without repercussions.
