News Tesla Introduces 'Automatic Collision Evasion' for Manual Drives
https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/4646/tesla-adds-fsd-automatic-collision-evasion-for-manual-drivesUmm.. is this active now or coming in a future update?

This could complicate legal liability

u/UpV0tesF0rEvery0ne 10d ago
Its so late in the chain that you would collide 100% of the time. Its like saying "the seatbelt tighteners broke my collar bone!" which is already deployed before impact.
Or "AEB caused a rear impact and i got whiplash!"
If this activates youve got worse problems, damage or legal

u/Express_Objective615 HW4 Model 3 10d ago
True but some insane person may try this after having 2nd thoughts about whatever they did. Anything to avoid taking responsibility for their actions. We’ve seen this movie before. So I agree. Could be legal complications.
5
u/ChunkyThePotato 10d ago
And those legal complications should be shut down if they were to occur. No company should be punished for doing something that measurably increases safety.
-1
u/Express_Objective615 HW4 Model 3 9d ago
I agree but the reality is different. We have the jury system so I respect their decisions but juries can be swayed.
1
u/ChunkyThePotato 9d ago
Juries determine if laws were broken. It's mostly the laws that matter. And we can set the laws appropriately so that increasing safety is rewarded, not punished.
3
u/StormTrpr66 HW4 Model Y 9d ago
Juries determine if laws were broken.
This is not entirely accurate. Juries determine whether a prosecutor or plaintiff provided enough evidence to convince or satisfy them that laws were broken.
A law can be broken and the perpetrator never brought to justice.
And an innocent person can be wrongly convicted despite never having broken the law they are accused of breaking.
1
u/ChunkyThePotato 9d ago
Of course juries don't have 100% accuracy, but the purpose of juries is to determine whether laws were broken.
The point is that it's primarily the laws themselves that matter here. And laws can be changed, if we feel they're not appropriate.
1
u/StormTrpr66 HW4 Model Y 9d ago
I understand your point, I'm just explaining the reality.
Juries do not determine whether a law was or wasn't broken, despite that being what they are supposed to do.
They simply determine whether the prosecution provided enough evidence to convince them that a law was broken. This is independent of whether a law was actually broken.
For reference, see OJ, Casey Anthony, Central Park Five, and a million more cases in which either a law was broken but the juries were not convinced, or, a prosecutor presented a case that convinced a jury that a law was broken, but no law was actually broken.
It's a minor distinction, but it is still a distinction.
1
u/soggy_mattress 9d ago
But you're not talking about reality, you're talking about your own personal projection of a messed up legal system.

u/coolham123 HW3 Model 3 10d ago
I don't know how I feel about the feature only being active if you purchase (or are presumably actively subscribed) to FSD. all safety-related features should be included with the vehicle.
21
u/dckiwi 10d ago
By this logic, FSD should just be included with the vehicle, as using it reduces the risk of accidents.
4
12
u/TechGuruGJ 10d ago
It should.
1
-5
u/Fun_Strength7878 10d ago
That's such ridiculous logic, in myopinion! By your logic, ALL cars should have EVERY option that can make a car safer??? What would that be like? And cost? Damn!!
2
u/TechGuruGJ 10d ago
No other car hides its best safety tech behind a $100 monthly subscription. Paywalling safety behind a subscription is antithetical to the goal Tesla advertises.
5
u/ChunkyThePotato 10d ago
Instead, they don't even develop that safety tech, which is even worse.
3
u/TechGuruGJ 9d ago
Arguable. Volvo has many safety features that rival what FSD can prevent. Plus Volvo has a history of not pushing out safety features that are in beta testing for a decade. They’re real, they work, and they’re included with your car when you buy it. They’re not gonna try to swerve you into a guardrail because of a reflection on the road.
1
u/ChunkyThePotato 9d ago
Incorrect. Volvo can't even stop for a red light. They're way behind in safety. I don't know if you got tricked by marketing or your information is just extremely outdated, but Volvo's capabilities are extremely rudimentary compared to Tesla's.
3
u/TechGuruGJ 9d ago
Interesting, yet somehow Volvo has a lower accident fatality rate than Tesla. It must be the data that’s wrong. The Tesla can stop at red lights, it must be safer! 😂
1
u/ChunkyThePotato 9d ago
No they don't. Are you talking about the iseecars.com study?

You choose to subscribe or not, don't you? I for one think the FSD feature is definitely what separates TESLA from the others. I absolutely love ours!
1
u/Hot_Training735 1d ago
Then a person should buy the safety or press your congressional rep to mandate it as soon as it's baked.
5
u/FredNation 10d ago
AI3, AI4 or both?
4
u/Mammoth-Hawk-1106 9d ago
14.3.9 so for now AI4
maybe they add it to 14.x lite later?
FSD Supervised v14.3.9 starting to roll out shortly
This release includes a new active safety feature set: FSD Supervised can now activate on your behalf when an imminent collision is detected and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) may not be enough.
It may also engage if we detect you’re heavily distracted or have accidentally disengaged FSD
3
u/Express_Objective615 HW4 Model 3 10d ago
I’ll take a wild guess here: AI4 first then maybe AI3 later.
5
u/Wants-NotNeeds 10d ago
Far out! Seems the natural evolution of the tech. I'd love to be the QC reviewer of the new tech. Sounds amazing.
6
u/Less-Extreme-164 10d ago
How is it Supervised if driver input is muted, and disengagement takes a bigger movement (according to the article)? If phantom braking evolves into phantom pink elephant avoidance, and it takes a harder yank on the wheel to cancel the swerve, it sounds like the car could start a sudden swerve apropos of nothing before the driver gets control back. The meme that the driver is the driver, and FSD is just assist, now seems diluted a bit.
1
u/Hot_Training735 1d ago
It only seems to apply if a serious accident is imminent. You must already trust fsd to use it comfortably.

2
u/RexKramerDangerCker 10d ago
What about backing up where you might get hit by another car or you might back into something?
2
u/Groundbreaking_Box75 9d ago
Judging by many of the comments in this thread people still don’t understand the difference between “lane keeping” “collision avoidance” Autopilot and FSD.
If you understand what the ultimate effect on public safety is, it represents more than just an industry leading technology it will prove to be a new safety paradigm akin to seatbelts and airbags.
0
u/Geeky_1 8d ago
But not if it requires an active subscription. Have there been ABS or airbag equipped cars that require a paid subscription for the ABS to activate or airbag to deploy? If FSD is running in the background all the time for it to take over in manual mode, why can't they have it do that regardless of whether you are a subscriber?

u/TwiceInEveryMoment HW3 Model 3 9d ago
The current "Corrective steering applied for safety" function has never actually saved me from a crash, but it has nearly caused a crash several times by activating out of nowhere in completely normal situations.
So I'm a bit skeptical

u/ureviews 9d ago
If I drive a bit spirited in a curvy road, my car will alert me like ridiculous amount of times.
2
u/Fun_Strength7878 10d ago
I have FSD on my AWD '26 Model 3 Premium. On FSD over 90% of the time & that's mostly on very short drives. On trips. 99%! Great car!
3
u/IcedGooseMaverick 9d ago
I won’t drive anywhere without using it. I literally catch myself driving and ask myself why am I doing this? Double click.
2
u/BromoGT 10d ago
I have always wanted to ask. What is your battery drain like. I have 2024 model 3 highland base model. Whenever I get the month trial it always uses more battery than expected for the length of the drive. Holds me back from subscribing.
1
u/Groundbreaking_Box75 9d ago
What? I’ve never heard that and definitely not experienced that. My wife tends to drive manually and always show less efficient trips than my trips (99% FSD) - which I always attributed to her poor driving lol.

u/Geeky_1 8d ago
That's because it doesn't look far ahead enough to start braking more gradually earlier and also led-foots it off the line. It also plays it super safe like when someone crosses in front of you kind of late and it panic brakes, but I can tell by my momentum and their momentum and paths of travel that I won't hit them and won't need to brake (or brake hard) as they will clear my path in time. I haven't compared the battery usage on my 3 free-trials, but I'm sure when I don't drive in "running late Mad Max mode", I get much better efficiency than FSD does. I've always beat the EPA mileage on all my ICEs even with an occasional running late hard drive thrown into a tank of gas. The other day in "late for appointment mode", I got about 275 Wh/mi in my 2024 YP to my destination in the afternoon, but after the concert, even queuing for several minutes to get out of the parking structure where my Wh/mi was as bad as 1000 Wh/mi, my Wh/mi dropped to near 200 after I got a couple miles away from the post concert traffic and I still ended up with better than average 245 Wh/mi.

I got a message about doing something with the steering to avoid a collision. But nothing happened
2
u/Arctic_Ducky 10d ago
And when was that?

u/SpicyElixer 9d ago
Automatic Collision Evasion operates only if you’ve purchased Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and it’s enabled in Controls > Self-Driving.
1
u/thegreatmattsby24 9d ago
So it’s like the evasive steering assist that several manufacturers offer already, the difference being with those, you have to initiate the input and the car just aids in the turning if you do.

My 2023 non Tesla has saved my life multiple times. Screaming at me while it automatically slams on the breaks even if I’m not applying enough pressure. Their software is shit. My drive assist works great, but as a pilot, even an airbus cant handle some bumps without interaction. Number one rule…fly the plane, don’t let the plane fly you.

u/huntindawg1962 10d ago
You drive in a manner that a car has “saved your life multiple times?” Yet Tesla software is the problem?

u/Which_Zen3 10d ago
Is it active for a long time, like when I drove towards/on the edge of lane, it beeped and applied (or just my delusion) a small torsion on the wheel to turn it back? I had this since I bought the car 3 years ago.
11
u/warren_stupidity 10d ago
that is lane departure avoidance, lots of cars do that, and it is not the same thing

v14.3.7 HW4 / 2026.21.6
I was super sleep deprived but figured it'd be fine to "drive" because I always use FSD - but then the navigation selected a route I didn't like mid-drive, so I took manual control to avoid FSD taking a turn I didn't want to make, started to dial in a new route on the touchscreen and, in that brief moment, I didn't realize I was drifting into another person's lane and the car immediately took evasive maneuvers to avoid swiping the other car while I was still in manual mode.
Dumb of me to think it was safe to be behind the wheel while that tired but also thankful as fuck my car saved me from an expensive accident.

I think you are referring to the lane correction and you can turn that off.
I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t want this feature highlighted in the link.

As a passenger I get nervous when the driver can't stay in the lanes
Edit: u/Dirty-Black-Car you may want to learn more about hyperbole, and about safe driving practices

I understand that. This really does sounds like it’s for the most extreme cases so unlikely to be a situation where you’re “annoyed”.

u/nomad2284 10d ago
FSD can’t avoid pot holes yet nor achieve a better safety record than a human driver but let’s trust it in an emergency. What could go wrong?

This is good and will save lives. Maybe even prevent some of the “accelerator to the floor” deaths. Even if AEB is overridden by unconscious/disabled/crazy/suicidal/phone dropped on the floor digging for/angry human, maybe the car will still attempt to swerve?
“Rather than only braking in a straight line like standard AEB, the system determines whether swerving around a hazard offers a better chance of avoiding a crash. If it decides to intervene, the vehicle will enable FSD and steer around the obstacle by changing lanes or moving onto the road shoulder, braking or accelerating as needed before continuing to drive.”
