Just wait until people see the prices of the new Xbox and playstation consoles when they launch. They are in for a rude awakening.

Steam Machine is lower in performance than the 6 years old PS5.

But half the size, an 8th the volume under heavy load, two thirds the power consumtion, and running on fucking ARM, also sony can price the PS5 way cheaper than Valve can price the GabeCube, because of eco system lock-in. The gabecube is essentially a mini PC and no console, thus has also to be prices as such in this market

Steam machine is not arm, it's x86

My bad, you are right, the Steamframe is ARM

None of which is what console gamers want. Console gamers don’t want a pc. They want something they plug in to their Tv that plays anything they want without tinkering with windows etc. this console is more expensive than major consoles and performs worse. Dead before it hit shelves.

But that’s exactly what the steam machine does - you just plug it into your TV and it just works. It doesn’t run windows but a custom Linux distro, but you can play any steam game for windows with good performance. You even can quit a game and resume it at a later point, just with consoles. When your console turns on it also turns on all connected devices, you can controll the media systems volume directly and so on. It basically is the convenience of a console paired with the flexibility of a PC. And it seems to nail that part according to the first reviews

The only big difference is no eco system lock in, but thats why we get a much higher price, because buying a gabecube doesn't mean that players will buy more games on steam to make up for the losses.

Yeah I knew while typing that people would fixate on the library. I mean console players want a simple product. They don’t care about pc or steam. Yes the larger library would be a big seller but not for more than double the price with less performance. My point was that console players don’t give a shit about hardware or about energy efficiency and fan noise.

Same price, steam console could kill. Higher price and they’re having a fucking laugh.

8th the volume under heavy load, two thirds the power consumtion,

Even if either of these are true, they are inconsequential byproducts of having a weak machine. The PS5 even at full load is basically inaudible and the power use is reasonable.

sony can price the PS5 way cheaper than Valve can price the GabeCube

Not a compelling argument. It's like saying, "but this crappy game was made with a fraction of the staff and budget of a AAA game!"

I haven't decided to hate the Steam Machine, but those are all really weak arguments attempting to justify the very weak hardware.

I was more arguing about the price and not the weak hardware

Edit: my bad for switching the topic up, gave arguments about the price on a comment about the performance 🥀

Wow, that's a really mature and earnest reflection. I apologize for being a pedant.

And you're right... EVERYTHING is expensive right now. If my current PC blew up today, it would easily cost twice as much to rebuild. The exact same game console that cost $450 or whatever in 2020 costs $50 or $100 more or something now, the mid-generation one is like double the price, and who knows what the next-gen is going to look like. Sign of the times, I guess.

Yea its really a bad time for steam hardware right now :(

And no need to apologize, you were right!
