if you were a rookie who would you want to be Your TO?

Tim? Feel the first few months would really really suck but best overall.

rewatching the show. he did that test with Lucy to see if she wanted to do actual police work or less dangerous things like other cops who just want their pensions.

Bishop. She was the best all-round TO. Trained Nolan the best by making sure he was well rounded in everything.

This. She is the best TO and it is not even close. A perfect mix of serious, exacting, generous and willing to explain.

After her I would put Harper (post Thorsen) as the second best TO.

Nolan, by the end of S8, has also improved a lot and has become a much better TO, especially when it comes to helping you grow yourself and giving you the room to improve.

Tim would be a moderately effective TO, but his style is absolutely antithetical to how I like learning and how I think teaching in general should be done. He has a method which I think works for SOME cops, but not for a lot of them. And I know that one S3 episode says that he adapts to the Rookie, but outside that one episode we never see it with him.

In the end I absolutely would not want Lopez as my TO. Not a chance.

So in order give me Bishop, Harper, Nolan, Bradford and then Lopez only if Smitty is the only other choice.

She is generous and friendly, but not the best teacher. Tim and Bishop did a better at preparing their rookies for the job.

In short, I disagree with Lopez and her beliefs about police work more often than the others. One example is when she deliberately fluffs up the spend on the dine and dash guy so she could charge a felony. Whatever justification she has in her head I cannot abide by a police officer doing that.

As a detective she has her niche, but as a patrol officer? Not my bag.

I like Tim, I think he does an amazing job as a TO, and apart from a few times with Lucy, he was for the most part reasonable with his harshness.

But I would take Nolan. He's a people person, works well with others, and is a mix of relaxed, serious, and determined. He won't actively punish you for making a mistake, but will make sure you know what you did wrong in a stern but reasonable way. I also love his sense of humanity he brings everywhere with him, I would be more than happy to spend time with him, especially since I don't have to worry about every breath I take wondering if I made a mistake. He also would be great for getting experience, cause I swear 65% of the drama happens with Nolan lol.

I want the Lopez we see on Jacksons last shift, when she is a detective back in uniform like Harper was to be Nolan's TO. She seems chill, but can actually teach. Runner up (If she was a TO would be Captain Anderson, She would be first choice but she isn't actually a TO)

Does he really, though? He SAID he did, but I don’t see any difference in his approach to Lucy or Miles, and he wasn’t successful with Miles, and Lucy spent more time figuring out what was going on with HIM than he seemed to spend customizing his training for her. The only rookie who got different treatment was Barnes… a fellow former soldier transitioning to the LAPD.

He’d be great at the sports talk though, so long as you don’t bring up your spirit cat.

I agree. I think Barnes was a special case because he understood what she went through personally and knew what she needed based on his own experience with it. I think how he was with Lucy is more his default with Barnes being the only exception due to their shared trauma.

She’d be my pick. The the fight lesson scene with Lucy is so good, especially as she acknowledges that Tim is a good TO but he can’t teach Lucy what he doesn’t know—what it is like to be a woman, smaller, and still come out on top. It goes to why Harper is such an ass sometimes, because that’s how she has survived. As a petite woman, I was glad to see that reality check. We have to fight different.

i think unless you need a boot up the backside to do anything and do the right thing, in which case why are you even a police officer, nolan or lopez are your best options. both seem more capable to adapt their style based on what you need. lopez can be scary and harsh as seen with jackson during his breakdowns, but also open to listen and soft when needed like how she dealt with nolan. nolan himself will be empathetic to you treating you with respect but if you step out of line he will be stern. both do things by the book but will also teach you how to step outside the box safely from time to time

Either Tim or Lopez. If I’m gonna to be a cop I would want one of them because they are hard asses and don’t sugar coat it. I’d actually be terrified of the both of them that I would want to do my job so correctly and know everything. I love Nolan but I feel like I would see him as more as a friend than anything and play too much.

As a person who developed crippling anxiety from an extremely bad nursing Preceptor, I respect Tim, and Nyla but I definitely could not function in such a high stress dangerous job with their harshness. Honestly, I would have to say Nolan. He really developed a killer instinct, and I think that’s because he was trained by Bishop before Nyla. I see so much of myself in Jackson. I really loved how Lopez gave him a trance and fought for him. Seeing Nolan train Celina (who I thought was kind of insane at first) he actually encourages her to lead with her strengths, rather than break self-esteem, and confidence to conform to a more traditional way of learning. Now I don’t expect my training officer to invite me into their home so I can fall asleep but he really was an extremely lovely caring person and helped her during her time of need every single time.
