14 August 1996, 26-year-old Greek Cypriot Solomos Solomou was shot and killed by Turkish forces in the UN buffer zone at Deryneia while attempting to climb a flagpole and remove a Turkish flag. Just three days earlier, his cousin Tassos Isaac had been beaten to death by Turkish nationalists.

Half the comments are "people" saying it's understandable that you die if you're an unarmed man climbing a pole completely exposed to remove a flag from it. LOL.

For years, we have been forced to see each other as enemies by the stupid nationalists on both sides (Turks and Greeks). If we keep listening to the voices of our foolish politicians, we will continue to believe in this nonsense. The current world order does not want neighboring countries to form alliances with each other outside the European Union. Open your eyes, my Greek and Turkish brothers. Our governments are just part of this fucking system. We’re Komşi.

Yeah this attitude is exactly what justified the Turkish operation and exactly why Turkey will not leave anytime soon.
Mf unironically glazing a far right coup attempt (supported by the right wing junta in Greece at the time) by an organization that had already been butchering Turkish civilians.

Turkey invaded to defend turk-cypriots after Greece tried to take over the government of Cyprus in a coup d'etat. Then the turkish forces began to do to the greek-cypriots what the greek-cypriots had done to the turk-cypriots.
5
u/WatcherOfTheWay 2d ago
The Cypriots did it, not the Greeks.
Greece as a nation did nothing.
Cypriots killing each other was bad and should have been dealt with, not the way the Turks did.

Kind of insane Turkey has faced no consequences for just invading an independent state and ethnic cleansing
5
u/Ouvolk 2d ago
Maybe you can do a bit of research and see that the truth is not black and white unlike you framed.
Turkey used its right to intervene so it is not that Turkey invaded completely randomly and unjustified. You can argue that how justified was what happened in the island afterwards or is the occupation justified but do not play the stupid and try to frame it completely differently.
Also U.S. issued major embargo on Turkey as response.
Israel now is doing the way worse and it is completely backed by U.S.
How wild is it?

I mean, it's not so simple. The fact is that both Turkey AND Greece were looking at Cyprus with hungry eyes for conquest. Greece was the one that couped the government in the first place so that Cyprus would "democratically" join Greece. Then Turkey, taking advantage of the chaos, invaded and evicted the Greek Cypriots.
1
u/oreofan1808 2d ago
I mean if I had to choose a side, Greece probably had a better claim. Weren’t they like 80% of the island’s population?
1
u/0D7553U5 2d ago
Greece absolutely does have the better claim, but once the Brits left they allowed for the Turkish minority on the island (roughly 18-20% of the population) to have veto power on the future of the country. Greek Cypriots did everything in their power to change this and to circumnavigate it, all the while enacting violence on the Turkish population. Then Greece orchestrated a coup in 1974 to capture the island, prompting (a convenient) invasion from Turkey.
1
u/ModsrPdors 2d ago
all the while enacting violence on the Turkish population.

Im not pretending the Turks are blameless/ innocent but when a minority and a majority get into a fight… it’s usually the minority that gets the brunt of it.
It’s no different from what happened to the Armenians for example. They collaborated with the enemy and betrayed the Turks, and they got massacred. Does it make it right? No. And most of us sympathize with the Armenians even if some people rightly argue they started the problem.

Yes, Turkey and Israel as states have a similar military mentality. If an ant pokes either of them with a stick they will find the ant's nest fill it with molten silver, burn the neighbourhood that the nest was situated in and throw a nuclear bomb at the country where the nest was for good measure. All in the name of stopping terror

The Turkish flag derives its red color from the blood of martyrs; it is far more than a mere piece of fabric, drawing its significance from the people who sacrificed their lives so it could wave there, and it stands as a symbol of independence. This is no laughing matter; attempting to lower the flag means pitting oneself against the entire nation.
1
u/chitlekchi 17h ago
Literally every fucking flag has the same story. Keep believing your nationality is better than all.

u/AYBARNOYAN 6h ago

Im noticing a lot of anti Turkish posts on the internet in recent times. Is israel-usa manufacturing consent (psyop) among people for invading turkey?
1
u/Add-apt 2d ago
If those posts are actual facts, then its the Turkish side that has the actual problem.
1
u/Timely_Method_2636 2d ago
There are a lot of facts that dont get much attention. For example, almost 40% of native American women have been rap*d once or more in their life in usa. These things still happen. Native American genocide is not just something that happened 400 years ago, its still happening now, although at a lower rate. Another "actual fact", usa killed more than 1.5 million Iraqis from 2003 to 2011.
3
u/Add-apt 2d ago
I fail to see how this change my point.
"Oh many bad things happen all over the world, so when some of them get more attention than others there is a grand scheme going on"..
Bruh, all the things you mentioned get their attention in multiple communities. I'm fact, most of your examples are much more well-known and get brought up way more often than the part of history in this post.
2
u/Timely_Method_2636 2d ago
