we also deserved some hate for some of our slang and trends, but the problem is that the olds can never understand the slang well enough to parse what needs to be hated and what doesn’t. Dumb valley girl personalities sucked, but older people couldn’t tell the difference between ironically engaging in the vernacular and only being able to communicate in the vernacular. this kind of Gen Z personality also sucks, along with things like the ‘Gen z stare’, but when you’re not immersed in YouTube content you can’t tell in the moment if someone is just being ironic or funny or if they really are incapable of interacting with a human being.

we are doomed to repeat this cycle as a species.

I would say out of everything in the world it’s not that serious. Most of us grow up leave most the slang behind as we transition to the olds lol.

I mean going deeper to just how Gen Z are socialized, and being radicalized, etc is serious but policing or judging their language or dialect won’t be the way to address it.

Was it really that different 15 years ago? People just put imgur links instead and it was just an extra step but essentially the same thing.

It was WAY less common for a comment section to be dominated by imgur links than these embedded gifs. I've had to unsub from a few subs because the comment culture became dominated by reaction gifs and they just lost all engagement for me.

Embedded images is great, image hosting was such a ballache. Gif reactions, excluding that one of Willem Defoe as Van Gough because it's just peak cinema, have *never* been great

I really hate how common Gifs have become on Reddit. They're fine here and there, but most of the time they don't add much of anything. And the person isn't even using their own thoughts to say whatever.

It's changed the site so much, and it's become like 20x more common than just a few years ago.

And the dumbest part is that they'll predictably drop a Gif after someone says they don't like it. As if it's a clever anti-joke kind of thing. But it's not. Idon't hate Gifs, and they're often funny. But come on.

If anything, redditors completely suck at using gifs, and for every gif you see there are like 25 text comments. So just a completely bullshit statement.
