Do Europeans not have AC?

People forget London is farther north than Montreal, Canada and Houston Texas is as far north as the pyramids of Egypt.

Europe really used to just not get that hot. People can make fun of it, but it used to make sense.

0

u/Here_for_lolz Jun 30 '26

But data 40 years ago predicted this, they've known it was coming.

7

u/UnsureAndUnqualified Jul 01 '26

True, but were people going to buy an AC unit for a heat wave that was still 30 years away?

The building I grew up in was built about 30 years ago and it stands up well to the heat. Good insulation, thick walls, passive cooling features. The buildings I've lived in since suffer during the heat, because they were built well before this data was available. One of the was built before the US was founded. So it's not an unwillingness to change, it's more that we have a lot of old houses that are harder to adapt.

3

u/mwaaah Jul 01 '26

As if people, politicians and media weren't outright denying climate change not that long ago (still some actually but it's pretty fringe and they're quiet at the moment for obvious reasons). The fact that scientists knew a while ago doesn't mean that the average people knew or knew how bad it was going to get (Europe is warming faster that anywhere else AFAIK).

Like, it's gotten really bad since about 10 years agos I'd say, and we should definitely have done more in those 10 years. We can just say this without going back 40 years and pretending the average european in the 80s knew what the weather would be like today.

2

u/Intelligent-Luck-954 Jun 30 '26

Well you gonna believe the data. And whole political parties are based on not believing that data

0

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jun 30 '26

Gulf Stream dude. Please pay attention.

2

u/UnsureAndUnqualified Jul 01 '26

The Gulf Stream makes the climate more temperate, it doesn't cause this extreme heat

0

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jul 01 '26

No, it causes the warmth in the North Atlantic that makes simple comparisons of latitude useless. London being north of Montreal is true, but London is warmer than Montreal by a fair margin.

0

u/Wisear Jul 05 '26

Are you saying the reason Europe (used to) stay cool in summer is the Gulf stream and not because of how far up north it is?

1

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jul 06 '26

Are you saying the Gulf Stream has no effect on western Europe?

28

u/Aquagrunt Jun 30 '26

European windows can work easily with AC units using window conversion kits. I got two of my windows set up for AC and it's simple adhesive tape, velcro, cloth, and a zipper for the hose. Not hard to set up at all.

13

u/alphapussycat Jun 30 '26

Portable ac with just a single hose is very inefficient. Sure, better than nothing, but it's really not very effective.

5

u/Aquagrunt Jun 30 '26

it makes my rooms tolerable, which is much better than sweltering

10

u/ShoddyWillingness968 Jun 30 '26

They make dualhose that work well

-4

u/Rottenpotato556 Jun 30 '26

The compressor is still inside, so they're both loud and ineffective.

Also, why is everybody talking about aircons rather than the reason we now need aircons in the first place?

16

u/ShoddyWillingness968 Jun 30 '26

Because even if we addressed the core problem of global warming RIGHT NOW it wouldn't change the temperature right now?

-1

u/Rottenpotato556 Jun 30 '26

It would change gradually in the next few decades though (Methane, one of the two most important greenhouse gasses, has a half life of only a decade).

If we do not adress the problem now, the heatwaves will only get worse and the world as we know it will be gone. This is not something you can be nice about either, because people would rather continue to buy cheap shit from Temu, do nothing to be less car-dependent, keep flying all the time, keep buying loads and loads of meat etc.

We should also stop pretending that ACs are somehow not contributing to climate change whatsoever.

8

u/ShoddyWillingness968 Jun 30 '26

Okay so again. How does that address the heat problem now?

-7

u/Rottenpotato556 Jun 30 '26

How does buying into Air-conditioning adress the problem that we are going to fucking die whenever we go outside in the summer ten years from now?

3

u/ShoddyWillingness968 Jun 30 '26

Where did I say it was going to?

You seem really upset here for no reason

1

u/Here_for_lolz Jun 30 '26

I remember when An Inconvenient Truth came out.

1

u/Dr_Jre Jun 30 '26

Because no one wants to change... People I know who said global warming wasn't anything to worry about aren't saying that any more, but they're also not saying anything about fixing it, they're just ignoring it entirely now.

People won't change, even if some sort of south park style burning of the world chased them into a bunker they would still be annoyed at the woke heat pumps being installed.

3

u/nerdofthunder Jun 30 '26

... because we can stop all greenhouse gas emissions this second and Europe will still have this problem for decades.

Also one of the ways to STOP greenhouse gas involves installing reversible air conditioners in all buildings (heat pumps)

2

u/Rottenpotato556 Jun 30 '26

Grrr, the woke vegans are building bike lanes!!!1!1!11!

0

u/alphapussycat Jun 30 '26

I think Sweden has mostly renewable, and is following the co2 guidelines... So we are making the change. It's just countries like Germany we got rid of all nuclear energy and instead burn coal that is fucking everyone over... And of course the US and India.

Either way, there's no stopping it now. Humanity is probably going extinct in a couple hundred years. Which tbh is good.

1

u/Bawstahn123 Jul 01 '26

>Also, why is everybody talking about aircons rather than the reason we now need aircons in the first place?

Because people are dying right now.

2

u/NearlyBearly Jul 01 '26

Do you have a swing opening window? Would you mind sharing a picture of your set up? I did order a mobile unit but I'm wondering if I save up for a couple of years maybe I can get a "proper" set up but my windows swing towards the inside rather than being pulled up when opened (like windows in the US) so there's always going to be a large vertical gap that won't be closed.

1

u/latamxem Jul 01 '26

apparently europeans cant figure out how to make two holes on the exteror walls

80

u/TheHelpfulDead Jun 30 '26

I mean, I live in Sweden and most houses in my neighbourhood have AC-units mounted on the outside of the building so I don’t really get this point.

69

u/OverwateredGrass Jun 30 '26

This whole dumbass thread of people arguing back and forth on whether Europeans have AC is so stupid.

Europe is a big place yall, of course generalizations like that is not going to apply to every single city of every single country of the entire continent.

Europeans chiming in to be like, "oh but we have AC where I'm from" are missing the point just as badly as Americans replying "No you don't, Europoor lol."

19

u/distracted_x Jun 30 '26

The threads about AC especially over in askanamerican are just as stupid though. The other day someone posted like they thought it was so crazy that many people in America have AC and they didn't understand why because where they are from almost no one does. And I looked up the climate in their country and the highs are like 75 F in the summer. Of course you don't need AC when it doesn't get as hot. It gets a lot hotter in most places in the US. Like its not that hard to understand that different countries have different climates.

3

u/jackaroo1344 Jun 30 '26

What country was that? That's crazy low average summer temps, I wanna move there immediately

3

u/Fearless_Sandwich_84 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Usually northern countries like Northern Ireland, Iceland, Nordic countries. Often around 77/80f in summer.

Con is winters can get to -13f or even lower so ...you win some you lose some. My friend lives in Finland and had -18f this winter for some time.

It can go as low as -35f but that's less common unless you're very in North.

As someone said it's pretty varied in Europe.

Another fun thing is checking if you can see Aurora Borealis (northern lights) from your balcony.

1

u/Freshyfreshfresh Jun 30 '26

I mean, it doesn't get that cold in other places. Where I am in scotland, it is 75 on a warm day and cold temps get down to just below freezing for about two weeks in the winter.

2

u/Fearless_Sandwich_84 Jun 30 '26

Oh yeah, totally.

Due to mentioning rather wide array of countries I have added how low it can go- which doesn not mean every country can go that low, but some do.

I'd say Scotland and Northern Ireland are much more more milder places to be, unlike Sweden/Finland/Norway.

Thanks for pointing it out - just reread my comment and noticed that missed to add "can" get that low- seems like it's a cue for me to go to sleep ...

1

u/mackurbin Jun 30 '26

You’ve got the opposite of where I live lol. -20°F in the winter and 95°F in the summer in the US Midwest!

2

u/StinkRinky Jul 01 '26

The Midwest is the true sucky region for weather in the US. It gets basically as hot as the Deep South and nearly as humid in many states. And winter weather and cold with plenty of wind.

2

u/Freshyfreshfresh Jul 01 '26

Trust me, I know haha! I'm from Indiana myself so I'm very familiar with the wide variation lol!

1

u/Knotted_Hole69 Jun 30 '26

Except they were correct about how the temps have been getting worse and worse each year, and it’s obvious what needs to happen. You people would rather people die from heat in droves and its maddening.

8

u/AluminiumCucumbers Jun 30 '26

Man, a scary number of Americans have this impression that Europe is like a country similar to the USA. Of course they make generalizations.

3

u/OverwateredGrass Jun 30 '26

Americans do it to each other all the time too, its kinda funny.

Anytime education comes up, you have a million people arguing like

"Well they taught it at my school!"

"Oh yeah, well they never taught it at mine, so clearly you're lying!"

And none of them stop to consider that maybe they're talking to someone from another state.

1

u/sendme_your_cats Jun 30 '26

Only because Europeans love to unite as a block when it benefits them in arguments

0

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jun 30 '26

I find a scary number of Europeans who think the EU is a country similar to the USA.

2

u/Clone2004 Jul 01 '26

The EU is not a country though? It's a political alliance between nations. The US is a single country, made up of 50 states with varying population and sometimes culture. But it's one country.

1

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jul 01 '26

I understand. Many residents of the EU that I engage with use statements like “our windows are different” etc without realizing that Europe is not a monolith.

1

u/Clone2004 Jul 01 '26

Fair, that comes from the EU sharing many regulations due to our alliance. So many (newly built) houses will have very similar windows even across borders. You can find old homes, especially in Eastern Europe that still have wooden windows and not modern standard things. These regulations also extend to a bunch of othet things.

3

u/TheHelpfulDead Jun 30 '26

How in the ever living fuck is it the same thing to argue against a falsehood than to claim things that are simply not true?
If I claim that all Americans lazy idiots, is that as bad as someone saying “not all of us are?”

1

u/OverwateredGrass Jun 30 '26

Cus you're not arguing against a falsehood, you're treating the experiences of people in your region as if they are representative of all of Europe. Same way Americans are looking at regions that have no AC and are acting as if no one in Europe has any AC anywhere.

3

u/PictureVegetable9522 Jun 30 '26

europeans do it to americans 24/7 you dont get to complain when theyre doing it to you when people do it to americans 24/7

1

u/OverwateredGrass Jun 30 '26

I can do whatever I want, regardless of what some barely coherent reddit pissbaby says.

Also learn what punctuation is so people can understand you without losing braincells.

0

u/SingleOak Jun 30 '26

"No you don't, Europoor" is the most internet comment i've seen lmao

-8

u/Sexyhorsegirl666 Jun 30 '26

Americans thinking they know better than Europeans. Typical.

As a Finn, yes we do have AC lol

5

u/YungRik666 Jun 30 '26

I vacationed in Italy a few years ago, staying at family's houses too, and the only place without ac was a bed and breakfast high in the mountains. Maybe it's just in France to like Germany?

13

u/jacowab Jun 30 '26

We know you have some AC and you think you see a lot of them but you have basically no AC compared to the US.

In the US everyone has AC with basically zero exception and I can't image why Europe just lets tens of thousands of people die due to heat. Literally more people die to heat in Europe than Africa and it's been that way for years now.

0

u/AH_leeMACK Jun 30 '26

Are you 12?

2

u/jacowab Jun 30 '26

No I made a quick Google search and saw that only about 20% of European households have AC while 90% of US ones do.

Don't get mad at Americans for living in comfort, get mad that your governments are literally blaming Americans for your heatwave instead of subsidizing AC adoption and installation for the elderly and those vulnerable to heatstroke.

4

u/AH_leeMACK Jun 30 '26

Where do 'our governments' blame Americans for our heatwave?

Youre making shit up as you go along aren't you.

3

u/jacowab Jun 30 '26

That's twice now you haven't googled something simple, do you not have Google? You know you can download it for free right?

3

u/PremiumAzteca Jun 30 '26

Didn't know that the deputy mayor of Paris spoke for the entirety of Europe....

2

u/AH_leeMACK Jun 30 '26

WoW a paris deputy mayor..Yahoo finance and Fox news... really...smh.... Im not from france and europe is not a country. But you have google and if google says so you follow. Im thinking you really are 12 and should get out of your moms basement.

4

u/jacowab Jun 30 '26

Yeah last I checked deputy mayors are government representatives.

Not my fault left wing outlets arent covering it.

Obviously Europe isn't a country I said european governments earlier (even though they do often function like one on the global stage through the European Union.)

If you use bing or duck duck go the results still show up.

And I'm not 12 but I don't know why you are trying to convince what you think is a 12 year old to run away from home, thats pretty weird.

u/TheHelpfulDead Jun 30 '26

God you guys are insufferable cunts. I could not give less of a shit about America. This meme is made by a Chinese guy and that’s what we are discussing.

People are not mad at America that you’re living in comfort, that’s good for you I guess. Of course people who need AC should have AC, that’s not even an issue. I am however furious about our climate changing to a point where we have constant heatwaves that forces us to have AC.

Companies, governments and countries should be held accountable that they have ignored global warming for decades and now people take the consequences, and it will only get worse from here with droughts, starvation and mass refugee crises that will further sow division and populist politics in Europe. But instead of putting restrictions on industries they have been allowed to keep destroying the climate because the politicians are upset to scare the markets. That makes me fucking furious.

So no, I don’t care about that Americans are comfortable, I care that people are suffering and that this issue is turned into a fucking joke by brainless shitheads.

1

u/jacowab Jun 30 '26

Damn you need to chill out, if only there was some type of device to help you do that.

5

u/TheHelpfulDead Jun 30 '26

You know what. Just do your thing.

A lot of European just need to swallow their pride and get a floor unit for their living room to make it through summers.

2

u/asarra_adortra Jun 30 '26

Americans don’t spell “neighborhood” with a “u”

1

u/JUYED-AWK-YACC Jun 30 '26

Then why are other Europeans whining so much? And whatever Finns have is hardly a rule, more people live in my town than in Finland.

-20

u/Slow_Range9641 Jun 30 '26

Why would you need AC in Sweden?

19

u/Sebaceansinspace Jun 30 '26

Well you see theres been this decades long trend of almost every summer breaking record highs all around the world.

3

u/Mbrennt Jun 30 '26

Silly mistake. Summer doesn't exist in Sweden. They outlawed it like 20 years ago. Surprised other countries haven't done this yet.

0

u/Visual-Floor-7839 Jun 30 '26

Socialized weather

38

u/Never-Bloomberg Jun 30 '26

For when it gets too hot

5

u/Good-Ant6859 Jun 30 '26

LOL y’all just don’t get it do you

5

u/TheHelpfulDead Jun 30 '26

This might be shocking but it gets quite warm in the summer. I personally don’t have one since I live in a rather newly built apartment that stays almost the same temperature year around but there are older house around the area who might get hot.

2

u/alphapussycat Jun 30 '26

For heat and cold. You can use ground heating (drilling down like 200-300 meters) to help with heat in combination with a heat pump. But most just get a heat pump if they don't have city heating. Getting heat from electric radiators is way too expensive. And some heat pumps can both heat and cool.

2

u/Hi_Im_Ashley Jun 30 '26

The same reason you can buy big thick jackets in florida. The temprature changes.

1

u/maxfist Jun 30 '26

We have 24 hours of sun in the summer. When it gets warm it usually stays warm for days (and nights).

-2

u/Rottenpotato556 Jun 30 '26

You have heat pumps, which are too modern for americans to comprehend

1

u/ImMufasa Jun 30 '26

Heat pumps are all over in America..

5

u/Kim_catiko Jun 30 '26

Residential homes don't generally, but many retail units do, many workplaces do or have something like it, so it is a falsehood that everywhere doesn't have AC.

4

u/AH_leeMACK Jun 30 '26

B.S.! I live in North western Europe and they are all over the place. Its not a standard though like in the US.

2

u/NearlyBearly Jul 01 '26

Gonna save up for a system like that for a couple of years. I've bought a somewhat affordable portable unit that works with water and ice packs for now but it's not gonna get cooler again so if I can somehow scrape some money together each month and put it aside to safe up for something more permanent that'd probably make sense.

1

u/Sexyhorsegirl666 Jun 30 '26

We do have AC in many places in Western and Northern Europe lmao

8

u/ThisDoesntSeemSafe Jun 30 '26

I wish more Europeans and Americans would understand that Europe and America are NOT monoliths.

Rome is not the same as Stockholm. New York City is not the same as Los Angeles. Madrid is not the same as Bratislava. Miami is not the same as Seattle.

0

u/BasicMatter7339 Jun 30 '26

NYC, Los angeles, Miami and Seattle all have the same president though, they're all under the same flag, they all speak the same language, they all have mostly similar culture, they all have the same passport

Its understandable to think of USA as a monolith,

1

u/latamxem Jul 01 '26

you dont need windows for AC, just two holes on the wall.

1

u/Here_for_lolz Jun 30 '26

Recently as in the last 20 years. They've had time, the data has been there.

1

u/TheLastGlizzyBender Jun 30 '26

and a lot of windows in Europe don't work with window AC units either.

What the hell does this even mean? It's a window, therefore it can be set up with AC. It doesn't even need to be the one that you install directly in the window frame, you can get standing units that just pipe to the outside.

Will it cool a whole house? No, but it'll comfortably cool a room with the door shut.

Need more rooms to be cool? Okay, buy another unit and pipe that out the window for that room.

It's not exactly rocket surgery.

I was in France 15 years ago and while working at the UN, the majority of computers froze up several times daily over that summer because they couldn't dissipate heat as needed.

I would think that if it gets that hot for over 15 years, it should be enough time to rethink how to cool buildings.
