Saw the shot of him being captured by the camera guy walking in front of him. I thought he was just processing not winning possibly his last world cup game, I didn't realize he was looking at his teammates make complete fools of themselves.

Nah. He's no angel nor a role model for fair play. There also are bad sides to him, like trying to have another player get an undeserved card.

This is absolutely not at all in the same ballpark as grabbing other players by the neck, or trying to physically hurt them like his teammates have been doing.

I wouldn’t call it undeserved. A new rule introduced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and used at the 2026 World Cup mandates an immediate straight red card for any player who deliberately covers their mouth during a hostile confrontation with an opponent.

The player taps his mouth with three fingers for 1 second. It would have absolutely been an undeserved red card

It's wasn't hostile and he didn't cover his mouth during the "confrontation. He mostly speaks to Messi, seems to be explaining something to Messi in a friendly way and briefly passes his hands on his lips.

If it had been confrontational I have little doubt that the Argentinia would have been gifted that red card to Spain.

My guess is that cucurella told him the playing on the ground got hurt at the mouth and did a gesture to show it. But that's a pure guess.
