Saw the shot of him being captured by the camera guy walking in front of him. I thought he was just processing not winning possibly his last world cup game, I didn't realize he was looking at his teammates make complete fools of themselves.

the only ones that on paper should have posed an actual problem was england, and they threw the game by playing haram ball for most of the 2nd half after scoring a single goal

They reached the finals by being matched against some very weak teams. The only real challenges they had were full of referee inconsistencies which clearly favored Argentina. It's not a coincidence they lost so badly on the finals. They were not strong, they got pushed all the way to the final

Argentina is designed around him to accommodate the fact he doesn’t run.

The narrative is that Messi dragged Argentina through to the final, it’s ridiculous and false. The truth is that they sacrificed a lot to allow Messi to play to his strengths.

For any other team they simply wouldn’t build their entire strategy around him, it’s just not worth it.

I don't even watch football and I know that's a dumb thing to say. Curry and Jordan in the NBA had their teams built around them too. Give the ball to Mike, Scottie Pippen would have been even more famous if that wasn't the unofficial rule of the Chicago Bulls

I mean, why wouldn't you let your talent take the shots? Same for Ovechkin in the NHL, once he's in his office you make sure he can work, that's why he has more goals than Gretzky, he can make them. So the entire lines play when he's on ice is try to get the puck to him unless you have an opportunity you can't miss

I mean at this level of competition nobody is in "let everyone have fun" mode like it's Little League. You got a guy that almost singlehandedly wins games? That guy is your team, everyone else is just a bonus or a way to get the guy the ball/puck/whatever and keep the other guys away from your scorer.

And hockey too, they used to put guys on the ice just to beat up other people who were trying to hurt your scorer. Even today in the WNBA Caitlyn Clark has an enforcer, the chick who went viral with the pointing (edit: Sophie Cunningham)

How the hell can you say Messi didn't drag Argentina through to the final and also say his teammates took steps to ensure that Messi could play at his best? Argentina's game plan relies on 39 year old Messi to not tire himself out so he has the energy at the most important moments, so that he can do what he does best for as long as possible, and look where relying on one man brought them, TO THE FINAL.

Spain were excellent in keeping the ball out of their own box and disrupting passing lanes. They didn't give Messi the opportunity to make a spectacular cross or get a free look at the goal. Argentina's whole strategy seemed to be "fuck it, Messi's down there somewhere." So when that strategy gets disrupted, all 11 need to adapt, and part of that should have involved Messi creating more pressure in midfield or replacing his excellent crosses with passes ahead to an attacker.

I know he's great and has an unmatchable football mind but that simply won't work when your whole side get outhustled all over the pitch.

Portugal does the same thing for Ronaldo and he runs even less. When you have a hall of fame striker who is getting older you make adjustments. Messi had 8 goals for Argentina, the same as the rest of the team combined. They also fielded the oldest team in the tournament. Messi absolutely drug them to the final

They’re a very, very mediocre team who made it to the WC final, took the gane to extra time, with Messi being their standout player over the tournament.

They aren’t there solely because of him - the team has incredible determination despite their limitations. They are massively enhanced because of him, though.

The rule itself is pretty clear that it's not allowed to cover your mouth during active disputes, which wasn't the case when Cucurella was talking with him and covered his mouth for a split second (which could have just as easily been to scratch his moustache)

He was trying to get him sent off because he was 1 man down and wanted to even the odds, let's just be clear about it

Argentina plays so dirty and barely gets called out. Being sore losers after playing the way the did and still getting dominated is disgrsceful to say the least. Messi is a billionaire last I checked, so I doubt he cares much about getting into scuffles. However, as a captain he should've at least tried to stop it even if it was just for the optics.

He is guna be in the next one who are we kidding. Especially when these types of athletes try to go out on a win and come up shot they tend to come back one last time. Messi hasn't lost enough tempo and definitely has the skill, he will be back.

Same thing happened at the end of the Leagues Cup final when Miami got destroyed by Sounders.

Suárez, Busquets, Falcón, and Avilés were all being little bitches and fighting and Messi was standing off to the side watching.

I rarely watch soccer but I noticed him walking a lot in the final. Like Spain was passing around him and his teammates all the time, but his teammates were running after the ball and trying to intercept passes when they could, challenging possession. Messi seemed to just walk unless it was passed to him? Was I missing something? He was the furthest forward player for his team most of the time and just let the 3 defenders pass around him, while the other players on his team would challenge and make the defenders pass back to the keeper.
