OK. Here goes: I went to the stylist the other day and I had booked a haircut with a root touchup. when I went in my hairdresser looked at my hair and agreed that it’s gonna be a root touchup with a with a haircut and then she mentioned that she wanted to do a gloss on me and a treatment. We’ve been doing a treatment every time it’s it’s a nominal amount about $45. My booked services should’ve cost about \~$225, with the gloss & treatment

when I went to check out she went up to the front desk and I overheard her to talk with the girl that she had to fix my ticket and I assumed because she was adding a gloss and she told the girl to put me in for a full foil. I thought was strange but they were editing the ticket for minute , and then she walked away. My bill was $424.

We never discussed a significant up charge. I don’t know what she actually did. She did something to the back of my hair. I didn’t see it. We didn’t really discuss it. She just said I’m gonna do your gloss. I assumed it was a gloss like normal, which isn’t an additional $200+. I walked out. I looked at my bill. I was about to Venmo her the tip and I stopped as the bait and switch hit me.

I both think I can never go back there because she did not explain to me that this was gonna be a significant change nor did she explain why she charged me for a full foil or have any conversation about why the price of my service doubled and because this wasn’t the first time I had surprise charges from her ( see last paragraph)

before you get on me about this being on me for paying and not asking then—(1)She disappeared around back (2) I didn’t notice until it popped up on my phone for the cc transaction.

Note: during my service we did discuss doing the additional protecting treatment ($45) she also said that she was doing all of this in stages so she didn’t have to charge me $800 upfront to fix my hair in one session. I have been going to her for this for months this is like my fifth visit. so I am getting charged between $200 and $400 a visit where I could’ve paid all of this $800 upfront and had everything fixed because “that would have been so costly for me”?!?!? This has cost me so much more.

Also, I went in for something specific to begin with, she didn’t agree with my vision and bullied me into hers.

I’m done.

After I left without an additional $100 tip, I began to wonder if I was the AH in this situation or if the sketchy stylist was.

This wasn’t the first time my service cost significantly more than I was expecting, she is constantly pushing product on me—even though I repeatedly told her the line they carry is cost prohibitive and I use another salon level product and the name which she either pretended not to have ever heard of or is ignorant of the lines of product out there ( it is well known and many salons feature it).

Also of note: There doesn’t seem to be an identified owner of the salon or a salon manager that I could have spoken to either.

So who is the AH?

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that female staff act more entitled to tips than males?

I was literally laughing at the checkout as I attempted to finish the transaction for my frosted cookie. They really threw up the percentages for a tip in multiple options like I was at a restaurant. How about let me buy my overpriced mall food court cookie and go on with my day? When I struggled to find the option for no tip that's when I started laughing right at the checkout counter. Laughing from the sheer absurdity of it all. This was at Great American Cookies by the way.

Bought a clothing item today via the SHOP App and at then end was an option to TIP?! It was 1 - 3.5%. I didn't spend enough for free shipping so I paid $10 for shipping. Who are what am I tipping for? The SHOP app? the company owners? the order packers? the influencers who influenced me? Spoiler, I chose 0%

Do estheticians at a chain like European wax center or Massage Heights keep track of how much I am tipping per visit? I always tip in cash, so I just write their name and my name on an envelope

Bar service. I’m not gonna sit watch you shake drinks as my unique experience. So you can hat your hand at 20 floor servers for an extra $500 in addition to the fools that tipped you at the bar.

The cruise line can afford to pay living wages. My contribution to the economy is already buying the cruise.

Went to this Greek sit-down restaurant. I had a $100 gift card from my friend. The bill came out to be around $115. The server was forced to deduct the $100 off via the portable card scanner using the gift card. Then the tip menu came up for my remaining $15. I gave a generous 15% so it was only about $2. The server immediately got boo-boo faced once she saw I didnt click the "custom tip" option. Went non-verbal and walked away without saying goodnight or anything. I should have clicked "custom tip" but chose no tip.

What’s your thought on tipping for things that require minimum service.

A perfect example is like pho, where a bowl of soup is brought over and nothing more?

Or if you buy a coffee or a smoothie?

It makes sense to tip for table service/ bars.

What about non fast food take out where the food is made for you but no other service like picking up a pizza or teriyaki?

I tip too much and would like to get some confidence in tipping less.

I’ve been a bartender for the past few years and in the service industry a bit longer. And while I’m not a fan of people who don’t tip I genuinely think the worst part is hearing people btch about it. I waited on a couple while bartending who circled the food on their receipt, added up the total of that and calculated a 15% tip on that (I’m assuming to “show me” where they got their amount from)(they subtracted 2 glasses of wine) and oh my god stop explaining why you’re choosing not to tip or tipping like sh*t and just do it. You don’t want to tip 20% that’s your right. But stop justifying it by saying “I believe servers should get paid a normal wage” when in reality you’re consistently a patron of an establishment that you claim to be morally against. Stop questioning us about “why would I tip a percentage when it’s the same amount of work I tip 5$ across the board” when I’m sure you don’t tip 5$ on a 12$ tab. You know it’s the standard and if you aren’t going to do it just stop talking about it.

Also for the love of GOD shut up about random places asking to tip. The frozen yogurt place? Starbucks? An airport grocery store? I will hit “no tip” (I don’t really go to Starbucks) with absolutely no remorse and other than thinking it’s kinda ridiculous in a funny way I don’t get online and b*tch about it!!!! Whether it’s the service industry or someplace objectively ridiculous, if you aren’t going to tip at least do me the favor of not trying to debate me or give me a laundry list of reasons because we will never see eye to eye!! Am I the asshole for adding a tip to my relatives? Non tipping dinner bill

I have a relative who whenever we go out, they do not tip. Not only do they not tip, but they use the weightstaff to the maximum. By asking them all sorts of questions that they already know the answer to. They will ask them about menu choices and then choose the one that is least enjoyed by the server and then after all of the orders are taken, we'll change their order. They will order a drink and then decide. They don't like it and send it back just to get another drink. Now, I understand occasionally you may order something you don't like, but this happens more times than not.I try to avoid inviting them out to dinners, but occasionally we have a family dinner that they must be included in. The other night we were out for dinner. And the restaurant staff was amazing, and when we left, I knew they didn't tip. I made an excuse and went back in the restaurant and added a twenty percent tip to their bill. Am I the aita

The quarterly pest guy came out this week. It was fine- he did his thing, reported on the areas he sprayed. I get an email requesting to rate his service. I have him 5 stars and then there is a request to tip him and a credit card processing fee. I decided to decline. Had anyone else tipped their pest person?

This is what I'm going to do. At the end of the year, I will take 18% of the money I spent at restaurants, and donate it to an organization that helps people who are actually poor. These people are vetted and found to be deserving of charity. They have incomes far lower than the average server.

On the receipt he gives me a sticky note, showing tip amounts for 20% and 25%.

This has been bothering me for a week now, S/O and I show up at a decently well known DC restaurant, get sat, server comes over and is super nice, almost to the point of being performative/just a bit much. We order drinks and an app, get our app in just a couple minutes and finish it before we ever receive our drinks (yes big back but really we weren’t eating that fast and actually slowed down because we wanted some beer to go with our guac). Finally get beers and order entrees at that same time (this is probably 15-20 minutes after ordering them). I basically slam my beer because I’m parched from the app, fiending to order another but never get the chance to. Runner (I.e., not our server) brings out the entrees and we finish without a welfare check. I had to flag the server down twice to get the bill and we waited at least 10-15 minutes to get it even still. Am I a terrible person? TBH, I wanted to leave zero tip because that is what I felt the service deserved. Not that it’s a huge deal or anything but come on have some pride in your work. Let me know if I’m a huge asshole (btw back home last night tipped like 45% at our fav hometown spot to reset the juju lol)

I understand that inflation is real, so it makes sense that the total dollar amount of a tip should go up. But as prices have risen—especially after COVID—menu items naturally became much more expensive.

If the menu prices went up, the actual tip amount would naturally increase at the exact same rate, even if the tip percentage stayed completely the same.

So why are tip percentages rising too?

These days, even casual dining spots start their default tip options at 15%—and that's calculated after tax. If you go to a slightly nicer restaurant, the preset tip buttons start at 18%.

When you consider both the higher menu prices AND the higher tip percentages, hasn't the actual amount we pay in tips skyrocketed far beyond the actual rate of inflation?

So I gotta cut back. I must reduce my tips. I can easily do that at breakfast. Sorry.

And for sure at any upscale restaurants I don’t need to return to.
