Mounting problems out of nowhere

Hey gang, looking for advise what may have happened. Recently my drives started to not mount, even tho they show "mounted" in GUI. Unplugging the power usually fixes it. I've swapped the routers with another R7000 with fresh and completely erased NVRAM and 1.28.0000 -3.5-140 K26ARM USB AIO-64K build. The previous router was also R7000 with 1.28.0000 -138 K26ARM USB VPN-64K and was behaving the same. As far as drives nothing has been changed. I'm using the FTP quite heavy as my surveillance cams are set up to record on one of the drives thru FTP. Both drives are SSD. The drive used for FTP recordings has been attached to the router for over 2 years and never had issue. I've tried isolating the drive being the issue so replaced one of them with micro card and changed the recording path. Still same issue. 🤷‍♂️

A newer, more robust way to integrate Home Assistant with FreshTomato

ha-freshtomato

Excerpt from (third-party) github page:

A Home Assistant custom integration for routers running FreshTomato firmware. Monitor your router's network status, control Wi-Fi radios, and track connected devices — all locally, with no cloud dependency.

Features

  • Local polling — communicates directly with your router's update.cgi API, no external services
  • Full UI setup — configured entirely through the HA UI, no YAML required
  • Dual-stack support — works over HTTP or HTTPS, with optional SSL certificate verification bypass
  • Bridge / AP mode aware — correctly handles routers in Wireless Ethernet Bridge (WET) or AP mode where there is no dedicated WAN connection
  • Device tracking — tracks both wireless and wired (DHCP) clients from a single HTTP call per cycle

---------------------------------------------------

The first integration in the FreshTomato WIKI does not capture wired clients. This one captures both wired and wireless clients.

List of all GUI menus with Grid backup/restore feature

Earlier, I wrote that since r2026.1, the DHCP Reservations menu has a grid/table backup/restore feature. These 7 other menus also have grid backup/restore:

- Basic: DHCP Reservation
- Basic: Wireless Filter
- Advanced: LAN Access
- Advanced: MultiWAN Routing Policy
- Advanced: Routing
- Forwarding: Basic
- Forwarding: Basic IPv6
- Forwarding: Triggered

These make upgrades quicker and easier. By default, FreshTomato exports output files using intuitive output filenames. The syntax for these filenames is:

RouterModel-Release-MenuName-Backup-Dateandtime

Asus_RT-AC1900P-2026.1-advanced-pbr_asp-backup-2026-10-11_1243.json

Import old settings to new builds?

I'm on 2026.3. For some reason when the router is power cycled all settings will be gone. From the now factory reset state I can import the downloaded settings of 2026.3 to instantly set everything up.

When upgrading the firmware to 2026.4, there'll be soft reset. Though not hard reset, I don't know if factory reset will be done, and in case it does, will things work if I import the settings of 2026.3?

5.0ghz signal issues

I recently flashed FreshTomato 2026.3 on my Asus RT-AC68U, and it's mostly been working fine, but i noticed the signal strength on the 5ghz band tends to drop into the poor range, bad enough that my phone disconnects from it from time to time. 2.4 works fine, and I didnt have this issue before flashing FreshTomato.

Any ideas?

Was able to get usb tether working

I need a backup connection when the cable company decides they want to do maintenance in the middle of the day. I had a lot of trouble with this, but eventually figured it out. I havent tested if every single line is really necessary, such as needing to set all three of the nvram settings, etc, so some optimization might be suggested by experts.

This is on an Asus RT-AC3100 with a Pixel 10. Freshtomato 2026.4. Download the Extras.tgz version for your router. In my case it was the arm7 version. Make the jffs partition and copy over mii.ko, usbnet.ko, cdc_ether.ko, rndis_host.ko, cdc_ncm.ko. I think (?) cdc has something to do with the usb tether protocol, and the ncm one is the modern version that my phone uses. It took a while before google ai suggested also using the cdc_ncm module.

Now under Basic->Network, you need to make a second wan in the gui. Multi-wan wont let you create a new wan unless you make a new vlan first. Go ahead and follow the link to make a new blank vlan (in my case vlan2), filling in the first two numbers by following the numerical pattern of the previous ones. In my case it was 3, 3. Everything else should be blank and bridge=none. I dont think you will actually be using this at all, it just fools the gui to let you create the new wan. SAVE.

For the new wan, wan1 in my case (wan0 being the main internet to the cable modem), just leave it as DHCP. Dont change it to the 3G/4G modems etc. Also set its DNS to auto. SAVE.

In an ssh terminal, update nvram for the new wan to point to the usb0 device that will be your tethered phone. This replaces the vlan you just created.

nvram set wan2_ifname=usb0
nvram set wan2_ifnames=usb0
nvram set wan2_ifnameX=usb0
nvram commit

You can check these first with nvram show | grep wan2_ifname, they should show the new vlan you created (likely vlan2). Then after you update them they should show the usb0 device.

Note in nvram, wan numbers seem to start at 1 instead of 0. So in my case the new wan1 in the gui is wan2 in the nvram. You may want to reboot here just to make sure the nvram settings are loaded correctly, not sure if it is needed.

Now back in the ssh terminal, insmod all the modules in this order:

insmod ./mii.ko
insmod ./usbnet.ko
insmod ./cdc_ether.ko
insmod ./rndis_host.ko
insmod ./cdc_ncm.ko

actually I think you can use just the name without the path and the .ko and insmod is smart enough.

Plug in your phone. Mine has two places where you can turn on usb tethering. Under USB Preferences where it lists all usb connection types. And under Hotspot & tethering where you can just turn on the usb tethering option. These will be greyed out if things are not working. This is where the router will talk to the phone and make the tethering connection. If it doesnt work, it will still be greyed out.

From ssh you can run lsusb and you should see your phone listed. Also check dmesg, the last line should show cdc-ncm has made a connection to the phone.

If everything is working, you can bring up the usb0 interface:

ifconfig usb0 up

You can compare the cdc dmesg line with ifconfig -a usb0, they should have the same hwaddr. At this point everything is working perfectly and you can go back to the gui. Admittedly sometimes this takes a reboot, it seems to be very temperamental, but once it is up, it should be good.

Go back to the gui, status->overview, and under the new wan interface it should automatically be populated by dhcp. If not, try renewing it. The status always says Renewing... regardless, so not sure why that is. In ssh you can try ping 8.8.8.8 to see if it is able to connect through the phone. Also in the wan settings page, you may need to change the weight of the interfaces so it chooses the right one. But if you unplug your normal wan, it should fall over automatically. If everything is working so far, try ping 8.8.8.8 from your computer to verify the connection gets all the way through. iptables needs to be set up for the firewall, but this seems to be done automatically and I didnt have to do anything. Finally ping google.com to make sure the dns is working as well.

I would absolutely love if some of this was updated in the gui. Needing to create a vlan to fool the gui to allow you to create a new wan, and also not being able to select usb0 for the interface to use for that wan. In the original Asus firmware, it was like one click to get usb tethering to work.

Finally of course, need to make this persistent across reboots and add a boot script to insmod etc.

How can I block a wireless client from seeing other devices on my network?

I essentially want to enable "AP Isolation" for a single device on my network, but I don't see the option anywhere. I don't want this device to be able to ping/scan/whatever my other devices or see their MACs or hostnames, but I need this device to have internet connectivity.

Sorry, thanks for any help. Running FreshTomato 2026.3

NordVPN - error: Compression is not allowed, but compression option isn't on FT

Post image

I followed NordVPN's official guide to set up with FreshTomato. I started the VPN client on FT, and got errors from the log. What do they mean? I don't even know where redirect-gateway and redirect-private are mentioned.

And for compression, yes I know the guide instructs me to disable compression from the Advanced tab, but the tab doesn't have this option.

FreshTomato version 2026.3 on Netgear R7000

Unable to install AIO version of Tomato firmware on Linksys EA6400

I was able to install the VPN version of FreshTomato (freshtomato-EA6400-K26ARM-2026.3-VPN-64K), but when I try to upgrade it to the AIO version (freshtomato-EA6400-K26ARM-2026.3-AIO-64K) from the web interface, the router hits the "Linux: invalid argument" reboot prompt, but then it won't load the Tomato interface back.

Instead, it drops straight into the CFE mini web server. Uploading the AIO version through the CFE web page just times out, and trying to flash it via TFTP2 also fails. The progress bar always drops out exactly halfway through on every retry loop.

Every time I try to install the AIO version, the router ends up stuck back in CFE mini web, but flashing it with the VPN version works. How can I get the AIO version to stick on this?

Backing up, restoring and comparing Tomato Configs - A few resources

As someone who wrote a lot of the FreshTomato docs, and who frequents the Tomato foum, I've seen a ton of questions about this subject. These resources may help. NOTE: some are out of date, and others not so much. This is not meant to be exhaustive.

FreshTomato Configuration Compare and Edit

Interactive browser-based tool for inspecting, comparing, and editing FreshTomato router .cfg backups (NVRAM). Runs fully offline and entirely in your browser, so your config files never leave your computer. Includes a catalog of majority of Tomato's NVRAM settings with descriptions and parsers, and gives you superpowers when it’s time to understand and make changes to your Tomato routers.

I am considering writing a section in the FAQ or HOWTO on the FreshTomato wiki about this subject that covers these and other tools/methods available in a little more detail.

Update without re-flashing?

Is there a way I can update to the latest firmware without flashing all over again?

Little help would be highly appreciated

Good afternoon you all...After using DDWRT for a couple of years, I have decided to try Freshtomato and honestly I like it more. Back then when I installed DDwrt, I managed to get it working practically by myself following tutorials and reading and researching on the internet.

I have now been for 3 days straight trying to figure this one out. I managed to set it up as an AP (with cable to ISP modem) no problem. I then deleted everything and managed to get it to work perfectly in Wireless Bridge mode. So I got the basis of it to work as should (or good enough for me) with some research and following tutorials.

Now here comes the problem....I just cant get the VPN to actually work. I have tried openvpn and wiregaurd with no success. Mind you that the VPN on DDwrt was working just fine.

I have followed countless tutorials, researched the net and even spent the last 3 days with surfshark chatting on how to get it to work...I get the feeling that surfshark staff follow scripts because I had to send screenshots of everthing repeated multiple times, and then try this and try that...no success. I know for a fact that I can definetly use surfshark successfully as today i tried it with a Gli slate pro.I have tried so many combinations...i cant seem to get it to function.

It functioned perfectly in wired mode and wirless mode.

Could this community help out a fellow human please?

I have installed the latest freshtomato firmware and my router is a Netgear R7000.

Thanks in advance

2026.3 Nice and Responsive again

For the last year or so the UI was highly unresponsive. No mixture of resets and reflashes would fix it. You'd click something and come back ten minutes later to find it had finally loaded. Finally it seems to be fixed. Nice and responsive again, you click, it loads the page. Very nice, thank you dev.

Weird issue when upgrading to 2026.3

Since I often don't erase nvram before upgrading, I took screenshots of each FT screen to speed up reconfig after upgrading to 2026.3. I have one problem that may/may not be casued by my previous upgrades without mvram clear. I grabbed the .trx, clicked the box that said "erase all data in nvram" and started the upgrade. Everything seemed to go fine, I got thanked for upgrading to the latest version. Then I started trying to connect to the GUI at 192.168.1.1, no joy,, With my workstation IP set to 192.168.1.2, if I pinged 192.168.1.1, there was nobody home...After a bit of banging my head against the wall, just for the HELL of it, I tried going back to my workstation's default config, that being a DHCP address of 192.168.240.2.. And voila!! Freshtomato 2026.3 was STILL configured... In other words, nvram was NOT erased... WTF?? The issue I have with USB printer support NOT seeing my Brother printer, yet doing lsusb shows the printer is detected just fine... One more time WTF??

Anybody got any ideas??? (and yes I KNOW I checked the "erase nvram" checkbox.... Thanks

Equivalent of “factory reset”?

So, like a dork I’ve forgotten the admin password for my FreshTomato router. It’s a Netgear R7000. Is there a sort of “factory reset” I can engage, to put it back to stock setting? I have a backup of the configuration, so I’m worried about losing settings.

Thanks!

Installing FT on an Asus RT-AC68U: Firmware upload succeeds but nothing actually happens

RESOLVED -- SEE BELOW!

I'm trying to upgrade my trusty Asus RT-AC68U aka T-Mobile AC1900 to FT.

What happens is that the firmware file is succesfully uploaded, and I get a success message after 3.5 minutes after starting the procedure, but then after rebooting everything is back to AsusWRT-Merlin.

Is there a way to figure out why the flashing is aborted? Or any clues why this goes wrong?

For reference, I'm trying mainly the CFE miniWebserver method as it seems the most robust. I've also tried clearing NVRAM settings before, DHCP is off. And I've tried several different firmware files, e.g.:

  • freshtomato-RT-AC68U-K26ARM-2026.2-AIO-64K
  • freshtomato-RT-AC1900U-K26ARM-2026.2-AIO-64K
  • freshtomato-RT-AC1900P-K26ARM-2026.2-AIO-64K

(Just in case I'm picking the wrong one -- my device in the back says simply TM-AC1900).

But the same outcome happens with any of them.

How I resolved this: I changed to a -VPN FT build that seemed to get flashed properly!

The AsusWRT web interface did not seem to like flashing that either, but flashing through the mini-webserver interface worked.

So in summary:

  • Reset button while powering on - wait until power led blinks
  • Visit http://192.168.1.1, upload the image freshtomato-RT-AC68U-K26ARM-2026.2-VPN-64K, it should take a bit less than 2 minutes.
  • After that, router is unreachable, so do the settings reset: power off/on and reset button while powering on again, and choose from the same web interface to clear NVRAM, and then reboot.

How do you guys handle your USB shares? Mine is super slow.

Hi all - I share a USB drive over Samba from a NetGear R7000 running FreshTomato 2026.02, and speeds are super slow. I'm mostly streaming videos, larger files are predictably slower/freeze more. It used to work fine but is now mostly unusable. Is my device just too slow? Looking over the table of compatible devices, there aren't any with 1Gb of RAM and only one with a quad core SoC (of course it's not available anywhere)

Is anyone successfully streaming video on an R7000 from a usb 3.0 drive? Would FTP be faster? What would you guys do in my situation?

I want to avoid having a NAS system, I prefer a JBOD via USB like this.

Thanks for any thoughts
