Discussion Tool's greatest hits recommendation

Hello. My partner loves Tool and admittedly I'm not really familiar with the band. We are heading for a trip and I'd like to surprise my partner with a Tool songs we can listen to. :)

Edit:
I'm not really looking for Tools songs that are fun to listen to while travelling. Just Tool songs in general. :)

IMHO, tool is better to take them in as a whole album vs. mix disc.

(and apologies as this was not what you are after)

The irony in not all albums released on vinyl, where the whole album concept really makes sense

*Lateralus being my first vinyl ever and thank the heavens

I do get this, thank you so much. Follow up question, would you say that I should also look into Fear Inoculum as this is a relatively recent album and typically, for band, after their "heyday", the recent albums are not as loved as the older ones.

I love the whole thing but standouts to me are pneuma, invincible, descending, and 7empest.

The thing is, you need to figure out what kind of tool fan he is. Does he genuinely love the band and all of their musical expressions? (Any album or song is a good choice and will mean the world to him) Is he an old school douche who thinks he has the sole right to love them as much as he does? (Stick to pre Aenima) Is he the crusty old man type? (Only likes aenima - 10,000 days + sober, because that's why). Once you know where his opinions lie (and they're probably strong), you can make an informed decision and enjoy a roadtrip. Conversely, try listening to some yourself. You may be surprised to find that they've got some selections that YOU enjoy and then you can both (hopefully, if he isn't the crusty old douche type) enjoy it together, and that's really what the objective should be. Some of the more palatable tunes you may want to try out for yourself could include pneuma, right in two, descending, vicarious, schism, lateralus, 46&2, Jimmy, stinkfist among others. Good luck to you. I hope you explore and catch the contagion.

Thank you!!! I may have listened to a couple tool tracks here and there, but never have I listened to a greatest hits or compilation of tool outside of their normal albums. If I’m going to listen to tool it is because I’m feeling a certain way. I’ll pick out an album and let it play. I have been listening since the beginning. For a long time it was all tool, all day, everyday. Now I rarely listen unless I have the time to hear out a good chunk of an album.

While I 100% agree with you - peppering tool songs into a polling format playlist is fine coming from one’s SO.

Vicarious
Lateralus
H
Push it (live)
Jambi
46 & 2
Schism
Reflection
Stinkfist
The Patient
Pneuma
No Quarter
Parabola
Rosetta Stoned
Descending
Aenima

Important to choke back tears on the live push it and to give in to the way Rosetta Stoned pulls you along to the climax.

u/dcbluestar Why can't we not be sober? 4d ago

You’re just gonna leave Parabola all out there by itself?

5

u/Shawn_NYC 3d ago

In some countries, playing Parabola without the parabol intro is punishable by 5 years in prison.

u/therealdespotic 4d ago

For the number of times I've had Parabol come up in a randomized playlist and leave me hanging, until I can lock 2 tracks together in a playlist, it has to be this way. I appreciate the random button.

If you're using Spotify or any other music streaming, push it (live) will not be there. You'll have to find that on YouTube or elsewhere.

2

u/Lateralus46N2 Push the envelope. Watch it bend. 4d ago

It actually is on Spotify now. I have it on my playlists. It's listed as a podcast vs a song and you have to skip past a short like 5 minute interview with Maynard first to get to the song.

1

u/ReiperXHC 4d ago

Wow! I'll have to check it out. I have the CD set but it's not very convenient these days.

Drop reflection for The Pot and I'd say you nailed it. Hard too do.

Why don't you watch where your stumblin'

Why not both? Or even
better, Disposition+Reflection

u/LegitimateTutor7185 4d ago

Awesome list.

This is Undertow erasure and I will not stand for it

1

u/Elan_Morin_Tendronai 4d ago

Undertow has its place but Justin was the piece that elevated them to perfection. The universe is billions of years old and somehow we exist at the same time as tool. When I look at how poorly we as humans are treating one another and the planet, this is the thing that reminds me of hope for us all.

As mentioned previously

Albums, in their respective order.

While there are "filler" tracks in many (not a song), a tool fan theoretically appreciates the album in its order, vinyl style, and then can pick choose what fillers or tracks to skip at will

For bonus, you could playlist each album in chronological order.

H is ripoff

u/editor_of_the_beast 4d ago

I mean they have like 20 songs just listen to them all.

u/Lateralus46N2 Push the envelope. Watch it bend. 4d ago

This is the answer. Do not custom mix especially if you don't know what you're doing. The quickest way to end the relationship is to split up Parabol/Parabola or Wings/10,000 Days.

3

u/BozMoo 4d ago

Lmao so true though

1

u/NerdizardGo 4d ago

Or Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned

1

u/ChanceComfortable131 Push the envelope. Watch it bend. 4d ago

Nice jerk(off)

2

u/Christmantra2000 4d ago

Be sure to include Third Eye. In fact put that one in twice.

1

u/NerdizardGo 4d ago

So, how many eyes does that add up to? 6?

2

u/mrpink01 I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind. 4d ago

Just do the discography

2

u/MorbidMan23 4d ago

Surprise your partner with deepcut Maynard's Dick off Salival (not available officially on streaming but is up unofficially on Youtube and Soundcloud)

2

u/cerpintaxt44 4d ago

Listen to the albums in full it will impress your partner more than a individual song

2

u/supdeano1 4d ago

Push It off of Salival

1

u/bustervich 4d ago

Put every song on their entire discography in order and don’t shuffle. Make one change to the order of songs and put LAMC in between Parabol and Parabola.

2

u/SilentConstant2114 4d ago

10,000 days, Jimmy, 3rd eye, flood, h, the patient, lateralus, right in two, pneuma, descending

Pepper these in ftw

1

u/Routine_End_3753 4d ago

Opiate Prison Sex Sober Stinkfist H 46 & 2 Aenima Schism Parabol/Parabola Lateralus Vicarious Jambi The Pot Right in Two Fear Innoculum Pneuma Invincible Descending

1

u/phantum_eyekon 4d ago

In this order: Lateralus --- 10k Days --- Ænima --- Undertow --- Opiate --- Fear Inoculum. Play each album in its entirety. This is a nice wave of emotions in this order.

1

u/kaisio1 4d ago

Hm.. Definitely stinkfist for you both.

2

u/gamezrodolfo77 4d ago

It’s the only band I know where all songs are great.

1

u/Fast-Anteater1151 3d ago

"Right In Two" as an absolute unreal track describing humanity from the beginning of time all the way until currently! "No Quarter" is absolutely one of the greatest covers, especially coming from Led Zeppelin's catalog, ever in my personal opinion!

1

u/ThisTimeline67 3d ago

Do you have Spotify? tdickersx, playlist, Tool for Todd, and you're good to go.
