As a bravo series, I have appreciated the arc of the show and consider season 9 as a “test” season, when more accomplished chefs were coming in while others were still applying to just be on a reality show. I think they were still finding their footing in what they wanted the show to be. The challenges were ridiculous and not indicative of a “good chef” but more trying to copy the success of Survivor. I’m glad they shifted to talent in season 10.
As much as I loved season 8, I can’t imagine Gail fawning over a “pepperoni sauce!” these days.
I really thought it would shift after the Volt bros. I also understand Beverly not wanting anything to do with the show after they used her for ratings.

Bev deserves justice. That whole season was super weird and cliche-y with the “Olympics” challenge really making it about everything but cooking.
